Leader of this initiative is COCETA, we are involved in the organisation. Kind regards, Erdmuthe *Conference “Transfer of enterprises to worker cooperatives and the role of public authorities - an under-estimated alternative to prevent closing-down of enterprises?”* *26 September 2017* *Committee of the Regions, Brussels* In the upcoming years, a high number of small and medium enterprises all over Europe risk to cease activities if owners do not find any successor. At the same time, a number of enterprises close down due to economic difficulties or simply a change of strategy (e.g. delocalization). Countries such as France, Spain or Italy, however, have shown that even in such cases a take-over of the enterprise by employees might be possible. Even though workers’ buy-out (the transfer of enterprises to worker cooperatives) cannot be considered as a panacea, it has been up to now much ignored and/or under-estimated as an option by policy-makers, enterprise owners and employees in many EU Member States. This conference, held in the framework of the Saving Jobs! Initiative - a pilot project on workers’ buy-out supported by the European Commission - aims to shed light at the context in which worker buy-outs may or may not happen. Social economy players, public authorities, trade unions and civil society representatives will discuss key elements of successful transfers, the situation in different EU member states, as well as the role local and regional authorities can play in creating a conducive environment. How to move on at European level, in the context of discussions around an action plan for the social economy, the future of EU cohesion policy, the new Skills Agenda…, … ? Fwd: Christopher - Excellent Concise Article -

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Christopher M. Quigley <cmqesquire(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Sep 1, 2017 at 4:26 PM Subject: Fwd: Christopher - Excellent Concise Article - To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Michel, For your review. Christopher ------------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------------------- charles hugh smith "Of Two Minds". Thursday, August 31, 2017 Why We're Doomed: Stagnant Wages <http://charleshughsmith.blogspot.ie/2017/08/why-were-doomed-stagnant-wages.…> *The point is the present system cannot endure.* *Despite all the happy talk about "recovery" and higher growth, wages have gone nowhere since 2000*--and for the bottom 20% of workers, they've gone nowhere since the 1970s. *Gross domestic product (GDP) has risen smartly since 2000, but the share of GDP going to wages and salaries has plummeted:* this is simply an extension of a 47-year downtrend. *Last month I posted one reason Why We're Doomed: Our Economy's Toxic Inequality <http://www.oftwominds.com/blogaug17/doomed-inequality8-17.html> (August 16, 2017). The second half of why we're doomed is stagnant wages*. Why do stagnating wages for the bottom 95% doom our status quo? As I noted yesterday in Why Wages Have Lost Ground in the 21st Century <http://www.oftwominds.com/blogaug17/wages-flat8-17.html>, *our system requires ever-higher household incomes to function*--not just in the top 5%, but in the top 80%. *Our federal social programs--Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid--are pay-as-you-go:* all the expenditures this year are paid by taxes collected this year. As I have detailed many times, the so-called "Trust Funds" are fictions; when Social Security runs a deficit, the difference between receipts and expenses are filled by selling Treasury bonds in the open market--the exact same mechanism ther government uses to fund any other deficit. The demographics of the nation have changed in the past two generations. The Baby Boom is retiring en masse, expanding the number of beneficiaries of these programs, while the number of full-time workers to retirees is down from 10-to-1 in the good old days to 2-to-1: there are 60 million beneficiaries of Social Security and Medicare and about 120 million full-time workers in the U.S. *Meanwhile, medical expenses per person are soaring.* Profiteering by healthcare cartels, new and ever-more costly treatments, the rise of chronic lifestyle illnesses--there are many drivers of this trend. There is absolutely no evidence to support the fantasy that this trend will magically reverse. *Costs are skyrocketing and the number of retirees is ballooning, but wages are going nowhere. Do you see the problem?* All pay-as-you-go programs are based on the assumption that the number of workers and the wages they earn will both rise at a rate that is above the underlying rate of inflation and equal to the rate of increase in pay-as-you-go programs. If 95% of the households are earning less money when adjusted for inflation, and their wealth has also declined or stagnated, then how can we pay for programs which expand by 6% or more every year? *The short answer is you can't.* The budgets of state and local governments also expand every year as citizens demand more services, infrastructure requires costly maintenance and upgrades, and the overall costs of providing government services rises (soaring healthcare premiums are a major driver of higher government expenses). How can households pay higher property and sales taxes if their incomes are going nowhere? *Stagnant wages = stagnant income tax revenues.* *Then there's the consumer economy that depends on ever-higher consumer spending.* If wages are stagnant, how can households spend more money? The conventional answer is: we'll blow asset bubbles in stocks, bonds and housing, and households can spend this newfound wealth. *Nice theory, but only the top slice of American households own enough of these assets to matter.* Feast your eyes on these two charts of skyrocketing income and wealth inequality. This chart shows that the majority of income growth is now concentrated in the top 1/0th of 1%, and most of what's left has gone to the top 5%. This is the only possible outcome of financialization and central-bank inflated asset bubbles. *Here's another look at the same dynamic, but excluding capital gains, which flow to those who own most of the assets, i.e. the top 1%*: the bottom 90% lost 10% in the decade 2002-2012, the top 5% gained 6% and the very top of the wealth-power pyramid, the top 1/100th of the 1%, gained 76%. *The conclusion is sobering: wages/salaries are no longer an adequate means to distribute income or paid work.* Our system is broken at the deepest levels--not just economically broken, but socially broken as well. Clinging to this broken model and filling the widening gap between the super-wealthy and everyone else with more debt will doom the system. This is why I've proposed a new way to organize production, consumption, work and income in my book A Radically Beneficial World: Automation, Technology & Creating Jobs for All <http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0178MQI1M/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&…> . *The point is the present system cannot endure.* Borrowing trillions of dollars to paper over this failure won't work for much longer. We need a new system, or we're well and truly doomed. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

It represents the shared perspective of two of the most important leaders in the Christian Church who have worked together for many years on care for our common home. Dr. John Chryssavgis Crux, September 1, 2017 The world that we share - the ground we tread, the air we breathe, the water we savor - unites us in a very tangible and profound way. Despite our diverse religious or racial differences, the earth provides a basis of solidarity and the ground of harmony for all people, all creatures, and all things. It comes, then, as no surprise that the spiritual heads of the Roman Catholic and Orthodox Churches are able to profess with one mind and one voice the sacredness of God’s creation and to proclaim the need to respect and protect its resources for the benefit of all people, especially the vulnerable among us. This is the first time that the pope and the Ecumenical Patriarch have co-signed and jointly issued such a statement. The Orthodox Church has long advocated for preserving the natural environment, including the Ecumenical Patriarchate’s advancement of creation prayers and programs since the late 1980s. No other worldwide religious leader has placed the ecological crisis at the forefront of his service and sermons as Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew. However, the late Patriarch Ignatius of Antioch and the current Patriarch Kirill of Moscow have also published major statements on the sacredness of God’s creation. Indeed, after the Ecumenical Patriarchate established September 1 as the day of prayer for the environment in 1989, the worldwide Orthodox Church adopted the same day in the early 1990s, while other religious organizations (the World Council of Churches and the Conference of European Churches several years ago) and Christian Churches (the Roman Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion more recently) followed suit. At a time of global crisis and international instability - when so many people throughout the world have become the subject of displacement and deprivation resulting from the violence of political leaders and the greed of corporate heads - it is a source of consolation and inspiration that Pope Francis and Patriarch Bartholomew take time out to focus on the heart of what matters in the world in their “Joint Message on the World Day of Prayer for Creation.” While neither explicitly nor specifically referring to the responsibility weighing heavily on nations that chose either not to endorse or else to withdraw from the Paris Agreement of December 12, 2015, the two Christian leaders “urgently appeal to those in positions of social and economic, as well as political and cultural responsibility to hear the cry of the earth and to attend to the needs of the marginalized, but above all to respond to the plea of millions and to support the consensus of the world for the healing of our wounded creation.” The very first Patriarchal Encyclical issued in 1989 asserted that the church could not remain idle before the ecological crisis; however, it also urged “all those entrusted with the responsibility of governing the nations to act without delay taking all necessary measures for the protection and preservation of the natural creation.” And Francis closes *Laudato si’*, his encyclical letter “on care for our common home,” with a prayer for God to “enlighten those who possess power and money that they avoid the sin of indifference.” I have to wonder whether the pope and the patriarch have in mind the short-sightedness and narrow-mindedness of the Trump administration - that ill-advisedly withdrew from the Paris Agreement and irresponsibly disbanded a federal advisory committee on climate change - when they recognize the precarious consequences of “no longer respecting nature as a shared gift, but instead regarding it as a private possession.” Their words seem to echo the more considered sentiments of former President Barack Obama, who declared that the Paris Agreement paved the way to “a world that is worthy of our children. A world that is marked not by conflict, but by cooperation; and not by human suffering, but by human progress. A world that is safer, and more prosperous, and more secure, and more free than the one that we inherited.” There is an ecumenism of dialogue among various confessions, which many fundamentalist Christians consider a threat to their faith’s integrity. There is an ecumenism of martyrdom shared by victims of Muslim violence, which fundamentalist Christians consider a threat to their racial supremacy. And there is an ecumenism of ecology in the face of global climate change, which many fundamentalist Christians consider a threat to their entitled appetites. Nevertheless, Francis and Bartholomew are unwavering in their commitment to ecumenism. The truth is larger than any particular confession. The world is larger than any single nation. And the planet is larger than any individual ambition. Whenever we reduce life - whether politics or economy, even religion and spirituality - to ourselves and our own narrow interests, we neglect our role and responsibility to transform creation. This is the heart of the joint message published by Pope Francis and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew: That our relationship with this world determines our relationship with heaven. The way we treat the earth is reflected in the way that we pray to God. Walking on this planet and kneeling in church are tantamount to the same thing. *Rev. Sifry* *Think Tanks* - *Schmidt Hits the Fan: Ken Vogel*'s story <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> in The New York Times (which broke yesterday but is on today's print front page) about the New America Foundation's decision to push out scholar *Barry Lynn* and his Open Markets initiative, allegedly due to pressure from major New America donor Google and its chairman *Eric Schmidt*, who chairs the think tank's board, has generated a lot of coverage. - Here is New America CEO *Anne-Marie Slaughter*'s statement <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> on the controversy. She insists that the parting was not due to pressure from Google, but rather "[Lynn's] repeated refusal to adhere to New America's standards of openness and institutional collegiality," and that until recently they were working together to try to reach an amicable separation. - In addition, New America has released the full text <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> of three emails from Slaughter to Lynn that were quoted only in part in Vogel's story. The emails make clear that their relationship was complicated. They also make clear that Open Markets, which in recent years has developed a very strong critique of platform monopolies like Google, had become a troublesome component of New America, and that given New America's strong relationship with Google sooner or later something was going to give. - Keep in mind that the flashpoint for the controversy was a congratulatory note <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> that Lynn posted on New America's website this past June, congratulating European Commission regulators for imposing a $2.7 billion fine on Google. That's billion. - *Matt Stoller*, one of the fellows at Lynn's Open Markets program, flatly states <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> in the Huffington Post that "Google had our group kicked out of our parent think tank." - An unnamed Google spokesperson told <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> *Sam Biddle and David Dayen* of The Intercept that “Eric [Schmidt] never threatened to cut off funding to New America and that we had no role in eliminating the Open Markets Initiative.” The spokesperson added that she would not deny Schmidt’s “displeasure” with the Open Markets team, “but displeasure and pressure are two totally different things — he did not imply pressure on NAF re: Open Markets. To characterize it that way would be totally inaccurate.” - In the Atlantic, *Alexis Madrigal* says <http://civichall.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> Slaughter's statement about Lynn's repeated refusal to adhere to New America's standards "is how educated people say 'He was an asshole.'" He also notes, cogently, "The scale of Silicon Valley money and Washington money are so different that the introduction of the former into the latter is almost comical. You’ve got companies amassing tens of billions of dollars in cash with mechanics that are linked to particular regulatory and tax regimes. And those regimes are held up by people who measure donations in the tens or hundreds of thousands." - Writing for the Monkey Cage in the Washington Post, *Henry Farrell* puts the controversy <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> in the context of "The Ideas Industry <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…>," Daniel Drezner's new book, which argues that "the key sources of policy ideas are increasingly beholden to big funders, who very often have their own financial interests." Separating the controversy from the particular individuals involved, he notes, "Participating in the production of ideas requires resources, which may shape or even compromise the ideas that one wants to spread. Getting the resources while retaining the necessary independence to keep the ideas credible is hard." (I'd add—if you do have to dance with big donors, try to not be overly dependent on any single giver.) - As Farrell notes, "A recent paper by *Lina Khan*, who works with Open Markets, has electrified discussions over U.S. anti-trust policy and whether it is capable of restraining actors such as online retail giant Amazon." On Twitter, Khan says <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> she is "sad for what New America's decision to expel Open Markets means for New America [and that] New America's decision is proof of concept of our work." - The Khan paper, "Amazon's Antitrust Paradox <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…>", is really good, by the way. - Here is the new Citizens Against Monopoly <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> website, the temporary new home of the Open Markets program. Joining Lynn, Kahn and Stoller is *Zephyr Teachout*. Impressive how quickly they got that site up. Methinks that far from being suppressed, the crew at Citizens Against Monopoly has used their fight with New America and Google like a perfect ju-jitsu artist. - *Jonathan Taplin*, the author of the book “*Move Fast and Break Things: How Facebook, Google and Amazon Cornered Culture and Undermined Democracy*," points out <http://civichall.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> in The New York Times that Congress will soon be taking up privacy legislation and possible modifications to the "safe harbor" provision of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, both topics that Google and other tech platforms have intense interests in. - *Trump watch*: A new Fox News polls finds <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> that 56% of Americans believe the president is "tearing the country apart." Just 33% say he is "drawing the country together." - Back in 1984, President *Ronald Reagan* told <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> Israeli Prime Minister *Yitzhak Shamir *that he had shot footage of Nazi concentration camps as they were liberated when in fact he spent World War II working in Culver City making movies for the armed forces and had processed some footage of camps being liberated. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Fri, Sep 1, 2017 at 1:43 AM Subject: Global Government Revisited (GTN Discussion) To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com >From Paul Raskin <praskin(a)tellus.org> ------------------------------------------------------- Dear GTN, The world confronts grievous global-scale risks with feeble global-scale institutions, or, as I’m fond of putting it, Earthland resembles a failed state (www.greattransition.org/publication/journey-to-earthland) This dangerous incongruity demands reconsideration of the fraught project of global government, a task Luis Cabrera takes on in his new GTI essay, “Global Government Revisited: From Utopian Vision to Political Imperative.” Surely any rigorous Great Transition vision must address the need for supranational decision-making, but what are the contours of new institutions appropriate for the task? What intermediate steps can move us down that road? Read Luis’s answers at www.greattransition.org/ publication/global-government-revisited. Please share your reactions and comments by SEPTEMBER 30. Looking forward, Paul Raskin GTI Director HOW WE WORK GT Network discussions of new essays occur in odd-numbered months. You receive comments via email, and can review all postings at www.greattransition.org/forum/gti-forum. Then, in the following even-numbered month, we publish the essay along with a “Roundtable” (edited commentary drawn from the discussion and the author’s response). ------------------------------------------------------- Hit reply to post a message Or see thread and reply online at http://www.greattransition.org/forum/gti-discussions/192- global-government-revisited/2428 Need help?
