Fwd: If Silicon Valley Was In Europe, It Would Probably Vote Liberals And Democrats
by Michel Bauwens 21 Sep '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: piqd - your piqs of the day <dailydigest(a)piqd.com> Date: Thu, Sep 21, 2017 at 7:00 AM Subject: If Silicon Valley Was In Europe, It Would Probably Vote Liberals And Democrats To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> <https://www.piqd.com/> News from your channels Technology and society <https://www.piqd.com/technology-politics> <https://www.piqd.com/users/magda.skrzypek> piqer: Magda Skrzypek 5 <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/if-silicon-valley-was-in-…> If Silicon Valley Was In Europe, It Would Probably Vote Liberals And Democrats <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/if-silicon-valley-was-in-…> Silicon Valley is getting increasingly more mixed up in politics. On one hand, some of the tech giants have become increasingly vocal about their anti-Trump views, for example, taking a stance <https://news.vice.com/story/silicon-valley-is-going-to-war-with-trump-over-…> against his rollback of DACA and condemning <http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/silicon-valley-tech-industry-hits-b…> his order on Muslim immigration. On the other hand, we have other members of the U.S. tech industry, including a PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, planting themselves in Trump’s corner <https://www.piqd.com/technology-politics/right-wing-forces-of-the-silicon-v…> . This political awakening, topped up with the industry’s growing economic power, positions Silicon Valley as a significant player on the political scene. But if technologists’ become a political force, what sort of policies will they push? As The New York Times points out, a new study by political scientists at Stanford University might offer some indication. “Technologists could help push lawmakers, especially Democrats, further to the left on many social and economic issues. But they may also undermine the influence of some of the Democrats’ most stalwart supporters, including labor unions. And they may strive to push Democrats away from regulation on business,” writes The New York Times. A detailed survey of more than 600 respondents showed that tech entrepreneurs favour greater wealth redistribution, universal health care, open immigration, free trade, gay rights and gun control. However, there is something that puts them at odds with Democrats and edges them closer to most Republicans, mainly their support for less government regulation, especially of the labour. “The tech elite’s mix of views is unique (..). It is genuinely difficult to think of any politician who aligns with that mix,” writes the New York Times. What seems so groundbreaking in the U.S. two-party system, is rather unremarkable in Europe, where centrist parties espouse both neoliberal economics and progressive stances on socio-political issues. Given their new electorate in San Francisco Bay Area, maybe European Liberals and Democrats should consider possible expansion overseas. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=If%20Silicon%20Valley%20Was%20In%20Eu…> <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Ft…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/if-silicon-valley-was-in-…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/if-silicon-valley-was-in-…> Source: Farhad Manjoo | nytimes.com on 09/07/2017 | Image: Doug Chayka | Language: EN Silicon Valley's Politics: Liberal, With One Big Exception Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/if-silicon-valley-was-in-…> Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? IsoGrid Foundation open sources the CrowdSwitch
by travis.martin＠isogrid.org 21 Sep '17

21 Sep '17

CrowdSwitch is a future hardware product built using the IsoGrid protocol. When wired together they form a streaming, scalable, mesh network. Our initial plan is to give low cost (or free) CrowdSwitches to low income residents of extremely high-density urban communities. The best funding model still isn't clear, but we intend to build it within a 501(c)(3) organization to make our altruistic motives super clear. Read more about the protocol at: http://IsoGrid.org Read more about the CrowdSwitch and find the code at: https://github.com/IsoGrid/IsoSwitch -=Travis Martin Systems Engineer IsoGrid Foundation

Fwd: [commoning] Commoning Citizenship? Join workshops! > corrected version
by Michel Bauwens 19 Sep '17

19 Sep '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Mon, Sep 18, 2017 at 5:41 PM Subject: [commoning] Commoning Citizenship? Join workshops! > corrected version To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org > corrected version *CALL FOR PARTICIPATION* Explore citizenship! Join workshops at the FRIENDLY FIRE conference! Register until October 15! Who Needs Biometric Passports? Are Asylum Seekers Political Actors? Who Risks Mutant Citizenships? Who Benefits From Statelessness? What Does It Mean To Be A Digital Non-/Citizen? Conflicts have been flaring up with exceptional heat recently. Exploiting this trend, right-wing populisms are promoting escapism and warmongering – thereby priming failed citizens and failed states. In contrast, the FRIENDLY FIRE conference wishes to explore how we could embrace conflicts in order to make societies more democratic. To begin with, the project asks: What is it for any person to become a citizen, today? What is it for citizens and non-citizens alike to become political actors in fields of dissent? The Berliner Gazette (BG) wishes to invite researchers, activists, coders and journalists to its seventeenth annual conference with the aim of initiating debates and collaborative processes. For the first time the event will be held in collaboration with the ZK/U – Center for Art and Urbanistics, taking place November 2-4, 2017. *Register* + *join workshops* The conference workshops will bring together over 100 activists from all over the world. The BG will invite key actors from the international scene to form the core of the five workshop tracks, and will issue an open call for the general public to register. The open call targets (upcoming) hackers, journalists, activists and researchers. A limited number of participants was is able to register by contacting the following E-mail: info(a)berlinergazette.de. Deadline is October 15. Registration fee: 50 Euro, incl. catering. Please note: The five workshops will be running in parallel fashion, hence everybody is invited to commit to one single track. On November 2-4, the workshops will take place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The conference hosts will provide catering throughout the entire conference, including warm lunch. A series of guided city walks is planned for lunch breaks! To tackle the key issues of the conference, five parallel workshop tracks will offer five different approaches for a pragmatic critique of citizenship as a framework for political participation, asking the following questions: "Who Needs Biometric Passports?", "Are Asylum Seekers Political Actors?", "Who Risks Mutant Citizenships?", "Who Benefits From Statelessness?" and "What Does It Mean To Be A Digital Non-/Citizen?". The workshop groups will communicate before the conference in order to flesh out the workshop design collaboratively. Led by experienced group leaders, participants will be invited to come up with possible answers to the questions outlined in this project paper. The results will be made available as online resources by Berliner Gazette, and may include position papers, multimedia storytelling projects and collections of ideas. *Register by contacting the following E-mail* info(a)berlinergazette.de *Spread the word by sharing the link to this posting* http://www.zku-berlin.org/event/open-call-for-workshop-participation-1/ *Share this posting on twitter* https://twitter.com/berlinergazette/status/909725620053135360 *More info* https://www.berlinergazette.de/friendly-fire FRIENDLY FIRE is the 17th annual conference of the Berliner Gazette. Since yesterday, water level is continuously rising and now reached to 128.50 meters drowning Rajghat, Nisarpur and other villages. Water level is continuously rising after release of large amount of water from unfilled dams just to celebrate the Narmada Mahotsav on Modi's birthday. This is nothing but a shameless show of personal obsession by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and disastrous submission by Shivraj Singh Chouhan to the dirty politics supported by Gujarat and Maharashtra Government. Water being released from other dams to fill the Sardar Sarovar, resulting drowning of thousands of families, Houses, bridges, Cattles, trees and large tracts of forest and prime agricultural land. A large number of affected families haven’t received the house plots and compensation entitled to them, thousands of applications remain unheard before the Grievance Redressal Authority (GRA), leaving no options to the families but to protest on streets. In Gujarat, the Narmada Canals is also not complete and only able to construct nearly 30% of the total length of Canal network, which exposes the claims of Government to bring water to Kutch and other districts of Gujarat. This is nothing but a politics of giving false hope to people of Gujarat to win elections at the cost of life of lakhs of people of Narmada Valley. This cannot be more shameless act by the elected Government of any democratic country. *WE APPEAL TO THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY TO STAND WITH PEOPLE OF NARMADA VALLEY AND CALL OUR ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES* and ask them to immediately stop filling Sardar Sarovar dam till the rehabilitation is complete as per the Narmada Water Disputes Tribunal Award (NWDTA), state policy and many court judgments. netCommons is an interdisciplinary Horizon2020 EU project studying the social, legal and technological reality and future of the Internet - https://netcommons.eu/ The University of Westminster’s project team conducts a survey among experienced Internet users that asks: What Internet do we want? What are the Internet’s main problems? How can alternatives look like? https://d52netcommons.limequery.com/357528?lang=en We appreciate if you could take approx. 20 minutes to participate in the survey, which helps us to better understand the Internet’s problems and possible solutions. Many thanks! Kind regards, Dimitris Boucas, Maria Michalis, Christian Fuchs (Univ of Westminster netCommons research team)

They call it ‘flash organisations’, which they define as ‘ephemeral setups to execute a single, complex project in ways traditionally associated with corporations, nonprofit groups or governments’. What’s interesting about the projects they analysed is that the concept seems to bring back middle management: where traditional freelancers typically perform worker-bee tasks, ‘pop-up’ companies tend to combine both workers and managers. The piece highlights interesting findings on the social behaviour side too: “One thing that was really surprising and exciting about what we saw was how quickly flash organisations developed solidarity and collective behaviour.” The article also pays attention to the downsides: while fostering flexibility, the model could easily compound insecurity as temporary firms are not likely to provide things like health or retirement benefits. It will be interesting to see how and in what areas ‘flash organisations' might grow next. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Could%20%E2%80%98Pop%20Up%20Employers…> <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Fb…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/could-pop-up-employers-replace-cont…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/could-pop-up-employers-replace-cont…> Source: Noam Scheiber | nytimes.com on 07/20/2017 | Image: Minh Uong | Language: EN The Pop-Up Employer: Build a Team, Do the Job, Say Goodbye Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/boom-bust/could-pop-up-employers-replace-cont…> Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter?
