dear friends, May I ask your support in diffusing this important new publication to a wider audience, by diffusing it into your own networks ? Many many thanks! Michel Bauwens ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Stacco Troncoso <staccotroncoso(a)p2pfoundation.net> Date: Tue, May 9, 2017 at 9:23 PM Subject: Commons Transition and P2P: a Primer To: commonswatch(a)lists.p2pfoundation.net Hello commoners! We're very happy to share the P2P Foundation's latest publication, co-edited with the Transnational Institute. It’s called "Commons Transition and P2P: a primer" and was a collaboration of work involving Michel, Bauwens Vasilis Kostakis, Ann Marie Utratel, and me. We believe that a Commons Transition implies developing tools and policies that facilitate open, participatory input across society. This type of transition is meant to prioritize the needs of the people most affected by changing political, cultural and environmental circumstances — but what if those people aren’t getting the message? The Commons Transition Primer project addresses that concern, and this magazine-style publication is just the start. We hope it’s a good step forward in how we communicate and advocate for P2P and commons-based practices. This isn’t a basic “Commons for dummies” effort, though. We’ve worked hard to retain the complexity of the movement, but with inviting language and images to draw people in. In fact, the ECA is one of the featured case studies to show that the Commons is thriving and coalescing into new configurations at all levels. Please read it; according to online tools we’ve consulted, it only takes 35 minutes! Fwd: [commoning] DIGITAL CAPITALISM AND UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME
by Michel Bauwens 08 May '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Fri, May 5, 2017 at 3:55 PM Subject: [commoning] DIGITAL CAPITALISM AND UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org Hi, in May the Berliner Gazette will spread some friendly fire in Berlin and Brasov (Romania). In both cases our interventions will take place at the intersection of the digital revolution and socio-political struggles. In this posting allow me to draw your attention to the Berlin gig, which will take place in the context of the re:publica, which is "one of the largest and most exciting conferences about digital culture in the world". If you happen to be in Berlin on May 9, 2017, please visit our panel DIGITAL CAPITALISM AND UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME at the re:publica. It will take place at 6:45 p.m. DIGITAL CAPITALISM AND UNIVERSAL BASIC INCOME Short thesis: The idea of a universal basic income (UBI) is moving beyond its "leftist utopia" status: According to Deutsche Telekom CEO Florian Höttges, digitalization will make the middle class of knowledge workers unemployed and UBI seems to be the only 'show in town' capable to save us. In his international bestseller "Post-Capitalism" Paul Mason even suggests that basic income will be the social welfare system of the 21st century. But there is also reason for doubt: Isn't the UBI a neoliberal strategy to make us all poorer in the end? Description: This panel discussion will trace the development of the concept of the UBI from "a liberal idea of emancipation from the necessity to work" to "the conservative dream of an ultimate deregulation tool". To discuss why the UBI is being today propagated as a lifesaver for the middle class of knowledge workers whose jobs are under threat from algorithms, the panel will bring together three contrasting positions: Dmytri Kleiner (Telekommunisten.net) will talk about the idea of the UBI as a neoliberal plot; Meera Zaremba (MeinGrundeinkommen.de) will introduce a hands-on approach; and Timo Daum (DasFilter.com) will problematize the role of UBI in digital capitalism. The panel will be moderated by Magdalena Taube (BerlinerGazette.de). The panel discussion is a collaboration with Berliner Gazette (http://berlinergazette.de) The independent online newspaper has published a series of controversial articles on the idea of the UBI (in German) including statements by the three panelists: Dmytri Kleiner (read here <http://berlinergazette.de/bedingungsloses-grundeinkommen-als- neoliberale-idee>), Timo Daum (read here <http://berlinergazette.de/bedingungsloses-grundeinkommen-und-digitaler- kapitalismus>) and Meera Zaremba (read here <http://berlinergazette.de/update-sozialstaat-grundeinkommen>). Fwd: [ess-communs] TR: survey on independant workers/Enquête sur les travailleurs autonomes en cours: we need you
by Michel Bauwens 07 May '17

07 May '17

Sarah de Heusch ………………………. Goodmorning, SMart is a partner in the European I-WIRE project, which aims to better understand the phenomenon of "new independant workers" and to identify their forms of representativeness. By "new independant workers" we mean a variety of occupational situations, all characterized by broad autonomy at work. In most cases, these will be self-employed workers, but we are also interested in "freelancers" who use various intermediary companies in order to obtain salaried status and thus secure their activity through: a cooperative (Dies, SMart… ), an umbrella company, a body-shopping company, etc. More information: www.i-wire.eu . Among the various stages of the project, a survey is ongoing to collect the opinion of these workers. This is why we need you! Given your activities and interest in the issue, we would be very grateful if you could disseminate this survey to your contacts / targeted members. Could we ask you to help us outreach this survey to independant workers by undertaking one or more of the following actions: - mentioning it on your website - integrating it into your eventual newsletter - forwarding this mail to your contacts - printing this mail and posting it at the place you deem most appropriate - Etc. The survey can be found at: http://www.i-wire.eu/survey/ . We thank you in advance for your support. Of course, if you wish we can meet with you to present the results of the survey once they are ready. Would you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me. The subtitle of the meeting was: "Designing and building the Dutch platform for commoners". As a representative of the P2P Foundation I also participated to see what energy is surrounding this important initiative. I did not know what to expect from this gathering and made my way to the Pakhuis defying some fighting football supporters. In this blog I mainly want to point out how I think this initiative could develop, because during the meeting we were clearly still searching for the exact purpose of “De Meent”. Perhaps my insights can help to further develop the process of shaping De Meent. What is a commoner? Before we can think about a commoners platform, it's important to determine what we mean by commoners and commons. During the meeting, I felt some reluctance to define some sort of definition because people tend to let every participant define for himself or herself what they mean by commons and commoners. That is an admirable effort, but if we are working on a platform for commoners, it is important to define the subject. I would like to refer to a description based on the thoughts of Michel Bauwens as described by Rogier de Langhe: "... commons are not goods, it's a form of management. It is not about common goods but about their common management. More commons doesn’t mean, therefore, more state intervention by replacing the market, but something else, between market and state; A "third way" between privatization and nationalization. The specific thing about a commons is that it is not managed from the outside, but by its users themselves. Thus, a commons is not just a common encyclopedia, a windmill or a farm, but one of which the users together determine how it comes about, how it looks and what it serves. A commons is created as soon as you define a piece of the world in collaboration with some others and define new rules for them. That piece can be a farm, for example, a nature reserve or a fish pond. But also a digital encyclopedia such as Wikipedia. The rules of game lay down the rights and duties of the users of the commons. Rights such as who gets access, who, when and how much can be harvested, and who can take up what roles, and duties such as repairing and sanctioning when someone breaches the rules of the game. A commons is, as it were, a kind of island of agreements that you make together and maintain together. " Commonify instead of commodify In this line of reasoning, a commoner would be somebody who retrieves goods from the public or private management sphere to manage it by the users themselves. Commonify as a counterpart of commodify. An example of commonification is a pilot in The Hague where the choices of the design and management of streets is the responsibility of the residents. People who renounce their parking license to use shared cars will commonify a parking space that can be redesigned by the residents of the street. Of course, this can not be done by the residents alone, the city council plays an important role as well. The partner state "The government must make it possible for citizens to work together and create value. I call this the partner state. "(Michel Bauwens) In order to make commonification possible, citizens and government must work together. This is why the role of the state should be reinvented. Michel Bauwens calls a state that facilitates commoning a "partner state". This new role calls on the government to recognize the value that commoners can create and to trust in these commoners that they will perform the tasks involved with the maintenance of these commons. As we look back, we see that what is often referred to as "bottom up" in politics has a lot of common ground with commoning. An essential difference with the role of a true partner state is that there is indeed an active role of government. When facilitating bottom-up initiatives, the state often withdraws too much. A platform So what should a commoners platform do to enable commonification? - The main role of De Meent could be to facilitate the connection between commoners and the partner states. Collaboration is essential for building a new kind of society where the citizens and the partner state collaborate to work on the quality of life for the inhabitants of this earth, instead of the endlessly searching for profits, rents and economic growth. - In addition, governments and potential commoners need suggestions to shape this cooperation. Successful projects can be instructive for both parties. Think of LabGov in Bologna. The platform could thus provide examples of successful regulation and successful collaborations between commoners and partner states. - Facilitating the dialogue between the various commoners and representatives of the partner state could be a third pillar of the platform. In this way, members can develop and bring forward ideas on an online forum for instance. Meetings The community that will be created on the platform can also feel the need to connect offline. This community is already in the making judging from the participation at Pakhuis de Zwijger. Conclusion It is great that this process has been deployed. All people present were packed with energy to work on new forms of living in a commons-based society. This energy can be combined with a platform to make beautiful initiatives come to life. My feeling is that a good definition of commoners and commons and a defined mission statement can help keep everyone together and indicate a common purpose. *Walter Dresscher <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?author=1609>* | May 4, 2017 at 3:00 pm | Tags: linguistics <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=linguistics>, unions <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=unions> | URL: http://wp.me/p4csWb-gWd Comment <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/de-meent-dutch-commons-assembly/2017/05/04#r…> See all comments <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/de-meent-dutch-commons-assembly/2017/05/04#c…> Unsubscribe <https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?key=ab2c8c6893b88cd11b9f8cf1240fa0ec&email…> to no longer receive posts from P2P Foundation.
