Mark: You and your compatriots on P2P view the world from revisionism. Go ahead and keep looking through your microscope-provided by your "teachers." Or take the time and read some very old documented evidence available at a library near you= but you may need to stay there awhile on microfiche. -----Original Message----- From: Mark Janssen Sent: Sunday, October 23, 2011 4:39 PM To: P2P Foundation mailing list Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Fw: Info On Sun, Oct 23, 2011 at 10:32 AM, Natalie Golovin <10natalie(a)cox.net> wrote: > The European Tribes treated the Natives no worse than they treated each > other. Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. Fwd: "The Platform Press" - Essay On How Silicon Valley Reengineered Journalism

The essay "Post-Industrial Journalism" <http://towcenter.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/TOWCenter-Post_Industrial_J…>, which she co-authored in 2012, already is a modern classic and anticipated in detail the depressing situation most publishers find themselves in today. The main reason for their misery is the rise of the new platform giants, mainly Facebook. Her latest essay describes in detail how the publishers ended up in the headlock of companies, often founded not even ten years ago, and how this is not only radically transforming journalism but also our public sphere, politics and society. Bell interviewed dozens of newsroom executives and gathered data on their use of third-party platforms. Even though there are some publishers, who profit from the unforeseen reach of the platforms, her conclusion leaves little room for optimism. The dynamics propelled by Silicon Valley undermine the watchdog role of journalism. Using either the carrot or the stick or outright ignorance, platforms force publishers to obey to the laws of the new ecosystems. "Journalism with high civic value (...) is discriminated against by a system that favors scale and shareability." I personally see little alternatives to a stronger involvement of the state or philanthropists. Being dependent from public funds and foundations is fundamentally corroding the independence of journalism, but let's be honest: This independence seized to exist a long time ago. To varying degrees publishers handed over their journalism to the (benevolent) despotism of platforms (who are themselves profoundly surveilled and will be increasingly regulated by the state). Independence isn't an option any more. As a publisher, it appears, the only freedom is to choose your master. <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Ft…> <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=%22The%20Platform%20Press%22%20-%20Es…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/the-platform-press-essay-…> [image: "The Platform Press" - Essay On How Silicon Valley Reengineered Journalism] <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/the-platform-press-essay-…> Source: Emily Bell and Taylor Owen cjr.org <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/the-platform-press-essay-…> The Platform Press: How Silicon Valley reengineered journalism <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/the-platform-press-essay-…> Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/the-platform-press-essay-…> [image: Piqd email border 85e01894c7d51551c169e0286d31b6d1f51f3a1667cae0eab3a54c596edcd2f3] Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? Fwd: [commoning] Politics of Movement > book out now

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki via Commoning <commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org> Date: Thu, Mar 30, 2017 at 4:48 PM Subject: [commoning] Politics of Movement > book out now To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org Hi, the BG has just published a book as a one of the results from last year's annual project TACIT FUTURES. It is called "After the Planes" ( http://diamondpaper.de/title_25 ) – a title borrowed from Don DeLillo’s 9/11 novel "Falling Man". It is an English language book and features texts by Brian Massumi and Krystian Woznicki, as well as a foreword by the social thinker and activist Max Haiven. Moreover, it contains 100 photographs on the complex issue of movement control. As the forces that set the world in motion seem to operate invisibly, this book asks seminal questions: How do automated forms of power condition the movements of humans, data, goods, money? How do movement-based counter powers emerge? Here some selected quotes from the book: "This is a book that, like an x-ray, makes visible today’s hidden infrastructure of movement. The images and the writing presented here have been calibrated to capture, to freeze in the frame, the light emitted by power in motion that usually exists outside the spectrum of our perception." Max Haiven "The human has always been on the move throughout its history. Or is it more accurate to say that a movement of relational transformation has moved through the human?" Brian Massumi "Seeing with the omnipresent eyes of the observation society also enables seeing through the eyes of another subject. Here, in these openings, is where one's movements become political." Krystian Woznicki If you want to buy the book, which costs 20 Euro, you can send us an email (info(at)berlinergazette.de), you can also get it online at the Diamondpaper online store ( http://diamondpaper.de/store ) or, if you are in Berlin, visit some of the great book shops in town, such as pro qm, b-books, Walter Koenig, St. Georges or Motto Books and buy it there. For now, please save the date: June 30, 2017. On that Friday evening "After the Planes" we will launch the book at the Berlin book store pro qm ( http://pro-qm.de) , together with Brian Massumi and Max Haiven. Now, according to Vocativ, we're faced with a "*computer-aided rehash of phrenology, with computer vision and learning algorithms standing in for cranial measurement tools.*" Existing face recognition programs and their algorithms can predict whether someone is a “pedophile”, a “terrorist”, or how likely they are to commit a crime. All this based merely on their facial features. As a result, as Vocativ points out, "*those who are already disproportionately targeted by the criminal justice system (...) are again disproportionately branded by the algorithm*". In other words, "*rather than removing human biases, the algorithm creates a feedback loop that reflects and amplifies them*." Authorities see machine learning systems as useful tools for maintaining homeland security, steadily increasing <https://www.biometricupdate.com/201611/dhs-seeking-to-install-more-facial-r…> the use of the facial recognition systems. But the algorithms can also be dangerous. It particular they can be "*the perfect weapon for authoritarian leaders because it lets them efficiently and opaquely enforce systems that are already biased against oppositional and marginalized groups*". Comprehensive, yet easy-to-read article investigates human impacts of big data and seeks ways to make the algorithms more ethical. It's not just my recommendation - Vocative journalists use data-mining technology to find story leads and angles, so let's assume they know what they're doing. <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Ft…> <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Why%20so-called%20objective%20and%20u…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/why-so-called-objective-a…> [image: Why so-called objective and unbiased algorithms might be actually racist] <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/why-so-called-objective-a…> Source: Joshua Kopstein vocativ.com <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/why-so-called-objective-a…> Image: R. Fwd: UPDATE: Complexity, Emergence and Systemic Change
by Michel Bauwens 22 Mar '17

22 Mar '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kenneth McLeod <kenneth.mcleod(a)uts.edu.au> Date: Wed, Mar 22, 2017 at 7:43 AM Subject: UPDATE: Complexity, Emergence and Systemic Change To: kenneth.mcleod(a)uts.edu.au Anthropocene Transition Project Complexity, Emergence and Systemic Change ------------------------------ It seems we have several people interested in doing the Santa Fe Institute's *Introduction to Complexity* free online course and participating in our own *face-to-face seminars* to explore the content in the context of social and cultural change in the Anthropocene Transition. Here is the link for the course: https://www.complexityexplorer.org/ courses/74-introduction-to-complexity-spring-2017 The course starts on 10th April and runs for 11 weeks, though you can extend it over a longer period if you wish (the course materials remain on line for some time to allow participants to proceed at their own pace). You can, of course, cherry-pick the course by doing just the units that interest you and skimming over the others. Suggested dates for our own seminars are: - *Monday 8th May* - *Monday 5th June* - *Monday 3rd July* All at 6pm at the Business School. At this stage these dates are provisional. If you want to participate but one or more of these dates are impossible for you, please let me know right away. At our third seminar we'll decide on the next step. *ACTION REQUIRED:* - *If you have already enrolled for the Santa Fe course or plan to do so, please let me know now.* - *Check the proposed dates for our seminars and confirm that you are available. If some dates don't suit some I'll run an online poll to find the best fit.* *Advance notice:* Next year the Macquarie University Big History Institute is planning a major conference on Complexity. Watch for further updates. Below is the first email about this proposal for your reference. Also attached is Thomas Homer Dixon's paper in case you missed it the first time and sociologist Brian Castellani's excellent overview. Here's Castellani's complexity map to induce you to read the article! Cheers, Ken ------------------------------ Dear ATP participants, At one of our ATP forums last year *Annie Kia* from the Lock the Gate Alliance explained how LTG's brilliantly successful community engagement strategy was informed by complexity theory. Following the forum a number of participants raised the idea of an on-going inquiry into complexity and social/cultural change. This idea has been raised with me on several occasions since. It seems to me that for an inquiry of this kind to be useful the participants would need at least a basic shared understanding of some of the key concepts in complexity science. Some ATP participants are very familiar with this field of scholarship. Others have only the most general understanding. *So here's an idea on which I'd like your feedback...* The Santa Fe Institute in the USA is a world leader in complexity science research and education. The institute runs an extensive education program from undergraduate to professional development levels. One of its most popular online courses (MOOCs) is *Introduction to Complexity*. *In this popular introductory course, you'll learn about the tools used by scientists to understand complex systems. The topics you'll learn about include dynamics, chaos, fractals, information theory, self-organization, agent-based modeling, and networks. You’ll also get a sense of how these topics fit together to help explain how complexity arises and evolves in nature, society, and technology. There are no prerequisites. You don't need a science or maths background to take this introductory course; it simply requires an interest in the field and the willingness to participate in a hands-on approach to the subject.* (From the SFI website) The next offering of this free course is from *10th April to 30 June* and is run by *Professor Melanie Mitchell*, author of *Complexity: A Guided Tour* (2009). You can see Professor Mitchell's introduction to the course here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKzXvxZN-OE&feature=youtu.be *Do we have any ATP participants interested in enrolling in this course and meeting a few times while it is running to review the content and discuss its relevance within the context of the Anthropocene Transition?* After the completion of the course these participants might form the core of an inquiry group to further explore the implications of complexity theory for approaches to social/cultural transformation. If you're interested in this subject I'm sure you'll find much of value in the attached talk by Canadian political scientist *Thomas Homer Dixon*. I'll look forward to receiving your thoughts on this or any similar suggestions. Network < cjn(a)lists.riseup.net>, "water-warriors(a)groups.fwwatch.org" < water-warriors(a)groups.fwwatch.org> Dear friends: I share the essay I wrote last December for the TNI State of Power Report 2017. It is a kind of balance from the experience in Bolivia with personal learnings on social transformation. I only mention some of the key aspects I was very critical with, but of course there are much more to analyse and talk about. Power and Patriachy: reflections on social change from Bolivia http://longreads.tni.org/state-of-power/power-and-patriarchy/ Hope you will be interested in reading and spread it out. Fwd: The Meaning of Life (Part I)
by Michel Bauwens 21 Mar '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jonathan Latham <jrlatham(a)bioscienceresource.org> Date: Tue, Mar 21, 2017 at 8:07 AM Subject: The Meaning of Life (Part I) To: bsr-PROJECT-ELIST1(a)gn.apc.org Dear Friends and Colleagues Published today (Tuesday 21st March, 2017) by *Independent Science News* *The Meaning of Life (Part I)* by Jonathan Latham, PhD https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/the-meaning-of-life-part-i/ *Synopsis:* In a previous article I showed that DNA does not deserve its reputation as a biological "master molecule" and that it has no special powers of organismal control. To prove it, in diverse disciplines of biology, compelling alternative explanations of biological phenomena—as properties of systems and not genes—are emerging that refute traditional thinking. This paradigm-shifting conclusion, outlined in Genetics Is Giving Way to a New Science of Life <https://www.independentsciencenews.org/health/genetics-is-giving-way-to-a-n…>, nevertheless begs an obvious question. If the role of a master molecule was truly scientifically undeserved, how could DNA ever be considered to occupy it? The answer, it turns out, is that DNA has a fascinating but little-known scientific history. It was consciously fashioned into its role by wealthy institutions who were helped by influential scientists. This remarkable historical manipulation of the science of genetics is solidly documented and it explains how DNA emerged as a master molecule even in the absence of the necessary scientific evidence. This aspect of DNA has been largely ignored by historians of science who have assumed that this manipulation was tangential to the history of biology and merely sped up the inevitable discovery and understanding of DNA. The new developments in systems biology show, instead, that this manipulation subverted the whole course of scientific history and turned biology, in effect, on its head. Please share this article if you like it.
