Re: [P2P-F] [NetworkedLabour] Workerism Beyond Fordism: On the Lineage of Italian Workerism
by Orsan 19 Jul '16

Thanks Peter it is very good article. "On the other hand the unionization of freelance workers in the United State has assumed a much greater amplitude, thanks to a woman named Sara Horowitz, who in the last years of the ’90s created the Freelancers Union (FU) which today counts almost 250,000 members. Thanks to the financial support of many private foundations, the FU has constituted an Insurance Company which offers to its members financial coverage and assistance in case of illness.21" In the Netherlands there is a free lancers Union that provide consultation too, also unions also offer private insurance to workers -sometimes less advantageous ten competitor companies- as fu does. Sergio Bologna, somewhere at the beginning, says 'workerists admire the enemy'. So that enemy funds foundation of free lancers union, similar to the auto workers' union story as I quoted some time ago from Dyer Witheford, there is no word of unions and them becoming part of the body of the enemy. Sounds like from Bologna's writing and style the line between workerism and capitalism is less thin then one would expect from a workerist. Fwd: NEW book from The Corner House

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: The Corner House - new postings <notification-l(a)thecornerhouse.org.uk> Date: Tue, Jul 19, 2016 at 12:17 AM Subject: NEW book from The Corner House To: notification-l(a)thecornerhouse.org.uk --APOLOGIES for cross-postings-- --Please circulate to your networks, thank you-- July 2016 NEW book Licensed Larceny: Infrastructure, Financial Extraction and the global South by Nicholas Hildyard http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/licensed-larceny This new 144-page book, just published by Manchester University Press, argues that the current push worldwide for Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs) is not about building infrastructure -- roads, bridges, hospitals, ports and railways -- for the benefit of society but about constructing new subsidies to benefit the already wealthy. It is less about financing development than developing finance. Understanding and exposing these processes is essential to challenge growing inequality. But equally important is critical reflection on how the wealthy are getting away with it. What does the wealth gap suggest about the need for new forms of organizing by those who would resist elite power? What oppositional strategies unsettle elite power instead of making it stronger? Chapter 1 summarises 'the injustices of wealth', inequality and wealth extraction. The case study in Chapter 2 traces the flows of money into and out of a PPP project in one of the world's poorest countries, Lesotho's national referral hospital, highlighting who benefits from them in an entirely lawful process. Chapter 3 describes the ways in which 'finance' views infrastructure: a road, hospital or oil pipeline is not 'infrastructure' unless it provides a stable, contracted cash flow for the long-term. For investors, 'infrastructure' has become an 'asset class', as Chapter 4 explores further. What started off with investments in economic infrastructure (utilities, roads, ports, airports) now include investments in resource/commodity infrastructure (oil and gas facilities, mining, forests), social infrastructure (hospitals, public housing, schools, prisons, law courts, military bases), information infrastructure (big data harvesting) and, still in its infancy, natural infrastructure (payments for so-called environmental services). The trajectory is profoundly undemocratic, elitist and unstable -- infrastructure-as-asset class is a bubble set to burst. Chapter 5 takes a global tour of massive infrastructure corridors planned to enable further economies of scale in the extraction, transportation and production of resources and consumer goods by compressing space by time. Chapter 6 raises questions about how resistance might more effectively challenge the trajectory of contemporary infrastructure finance – and the inequalities and injustices to which it gives rise. It is likely to be more fruitful when part of wider efforts to foster and support commons-focused resistance to accumulation. Copies of 'Licensed Larceny' can be ordered from Manchester University Press: http://www.manchesteruniversitypress.co.uk/9781784994273/ ------ Other recent posts on The Corner House website 1) 'Nigger' and 'Nature': Expanding the Concept of Environmental Racism by Larry Lohmann, 6 May 2016 http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/nigger-and-nature Environmental racism is usually defined in terms of the racialised distribution of pollution. But it's also about the ways people, ethnic groups, nature and pollution are co-defined in the first place. This aspect of environmental racism is perhaps even more visible in forests than elsewhere. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/nigger-and-nature 2) What is the 'Green' in 'Green Growth'? by Larry Lohmann, April 2016 http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/what-green-green-growth 'Green growth' promises to: --respond to economic crisis by developing new environmental assets that can become profitable investments; --address ecological crises – climate change, water shortages, biodiversity depletion, deforestation – without imposing constraints; and --relieve the state of the increasing expense of environmental protection. Can this implausible triple promise ever be fulfilled? There are reasons for scepticism. This book chapter asserts that green growth is not about solving ecological crises but reinterpreting them, creating new opportunities that business can take advantage of while diffusing responsibility for them. It is full of contradictions and resistances to it are inevitable. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/what-green-green-growth 3) 'Energy and Climate as Labour Issues' by Nicholas Hildyard, April 2016 http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/energy-and-climate-labour-issues Recognising that energy is a labour issue is critical if the shift away from fossil fuels is to do more than just help elites find new, greener tools for exploiting the majority world. This presentation at a seminar held at the Austrian Federal Chamber of Labour asserted that coping with and resisting capitalist exploitation of labour means questioning just what ‘energy’ is: energy as the abstract 'stuff' that keeps factories working, consumers consuming, trains and cars running, the economy rolling and capital accumulating is very different from the actual energies that are part of living well. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/energy-and-climate-labour-issues 4) 'Energy Transitions: Some Questions from the Netherworld' by Nicholas Hildyard, April 2016 http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/energy-transitions The term 'energy transition' usually signifies a shift away from fossil fuels and the technologies that require them. The question that then follows is: how is this shift to be paid for? But there are pitfalls in looking at climate and energy like this. This public lecture raises questions about the direction of mainstream discussions on energy, technology, finance, accumulation, and organising. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/energy-transitions 5) Mausam 6 by India Climate Justice Collective http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/mausam-6 The sixth issue of the new Mausam, a magazine connecting climate debates to local struggles over land, livelihood and food rights, highlights the acidification of the oceans caused by high emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases; analyses the December 2015 Paris climate agreement; and reports on a WTO judgment against India’s solar power plans. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/mausam-6 We hope you find these posts interesting and useful, and welcome any comments you may have. best wishes from all at The Corner House. _______________________________________________ The Corner House notification mailing list http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk To edit subscription details or unsubscribe, visit http://mailman-new.greennet.org.uk/mailman/listinfo/notification-l To unsubscribe from this list via email, send a blank email to: notification-l-request(a)thecornerhouse.org.uk with the word unsubscribe in the message subject line. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] La Quadrature du Net answers to BEREC EU consulation on Net Neutrality

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Tue, Jul 19, 2016 at 12:37 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] La Quadrature du Net answers to BEREC EU consulation on Net Neutrality To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Press Release *Tags :* NET NEUTRALITY, BEREC, ZERO RATING, SAVE THE INTERNET La Quadrature du Net — For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/answer-berec-net-neutrality-consultation La Quadrature du Net answers to BEREC EU consulation on Net Neutrality Paris, 18 July 2016 — *Today ends the BEREC consultation on Net Neutrality. This consultation aimed at consulting the people on the guidelines clarifying the implementation of the telecom regulation1 <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/answer-berec-net-neutrality-consultation#fo…>. The version sent by La Quadrature du Net is the one written by the FDN Federation <https://www.ffdn.org/en/etude/2016-07-18/fdn-federation-contributes-berec-c…>, we believe this answer is appropriate and we support its provisions.* La Quadrature du Net would like to stress the following issues raised by the FFDN answer: - in section 5, on zero-rating, the approach proposed, based on a clear reading of the Regulation and Directives, is the one which should prevail to protect the end-used free-speech and open society on an open network. - in section 7, the questions about how end-users or civil society organisations can protect their rights, about the procedures leading to litigation, are important; LQDN is a civil society organisation which aims to protect citizens rights and liberties in the digital environment, and the absence of those subjects in the present guidelines is worrying. - in section 8, the provisions proposed by BEREC to get end-user empowerment are too weak, and we do support the remarks from FFDN requiring stronger tools on this point. Also, La Quadrature du Net would like to stress its dissatisfaction on the fact that the consultation was only available for English-speaking citizens which severely shrunk the pool of possible participants and hindering the democratic nature of the consultation. Only very few European citizens could participate to this consultation although all of them will be affected by its results. This lead to the creation of a multilingual citizen-lead consultation <https://savetheinternet.eu/> with the Save The Internet coalition. This consultation gathered nearly half a million comments that will be sent to the BEREC expressing the important interest of EU citizens for this subject. As stated in one of our press release <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/NetNeutrality-BEREC>, the wording of the guidelines and the very obscure procedure sum to the global lack of transparency of this consultation. As La Quadrature du Net was present from the very beginning of the legislative procedure, we regret the lack of transparency of this stage of the procedure. - 1. <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/answer-berec-net-neutrality-consultation#fo…> The regulation was adopted on 25 November 2015 and entered into force in April 2016 About La Quadrature du Net La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. >In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. Fwd: Love-Driven Politics Pop-Up Conventions
by Michel Bauwens 19 Jul '16

19 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: David Kyuman Kim <dkkim(a)conncoll.edu> Date: Tue, Jul 19, 2016 at 3:48 AM Subject: Love-Driven Politics Pop-Up Conventions Hello everyone. Hope all’s well! I’m writing to update you on the activities that the Love-Driven Politics Collective will be undertaking during the DNC next week in Philadelphia. As a reminder, some background on the Collective. The election season has heightened feelings of bitterness, anger, resentment, and cynicism about the role of politics in American common life. A prevalent sense that everyday citizens are unable to participate in the political process––the elections and otherwise––in any meaningful way has become a pathology of our American moment. Regretfully, we have been witnessing a widespread sense that politics is a wholly separate realm from the values and sources of meaning in people’s lives. These conditions need to change, and we believe a profound source for that change is love. The Love-Driven Politics Collective (LDPC) is a shared project dedicated to exploring the possibilities of love-driven politics as a response to political evil, acrimony, anger, and cynicism. We are promoting conversations that draw on diverse political, intellectual and ethical traditions. We anticipate that these conversations will emerge as we stage intellectual, artistic, and spiritual exchanges that will enable us to accompany one another as we fight for social justice in the difficult days that clearly lie ahead, and really are already with us. As such, our aim is to devise and divine strategies to respond to the callous, cruel, and cynical contempt that dominate much of our contemporary political discourse and political practices. How do we rediscover underused archives, traditions, and imaginaries from the past? How do we create new practices, polities and politics? In an age of cynicism, defeatism, and resignation, how do we assess efficacy and relevance of what Dr. King called “the strength to love”? The members of the Collective are scholars, activists, teachers, students, visual and performing artists, curators, social innovators, and religious leaders. By design and intent, the Collective is working with and across generations and traditions. The Collective is dedicated to an educational mission, one that flows in and out of conventional classrooms and coordinates with a wide-variety of public teaching spaces, partners, and opportunities. The Collective dispatches its work through meaningful invitations to partner and to be in solidarity in cultivating a political culture animated by love and marked by compassion, forgiveness, mercy, generosity, grace, and empathy. The ends and aims of the Collective are non-partisan and, at this early stage, largely interrogatory. We are seeking to assess and determine what role, if any, love plays in people’s political lives. Which is to say, the Collective is inviting everyday people and institutions to talk about love and politics. Through scholarship, teaching, the generation of forms of public engagement (public dialogues, new media), and the construction of curricula, the Collective seeks to productively disrupt the cynicism and incivility that have been hallmarks of American political life for the last half-century. We aim to do this by catalyzing the constituents of our civil society––ordinary citizens, civic and religious organizations, institutions of higher education and K-12 schools, arts organizations––to join in the regeneration of the love-driven common good. This is the work of love-driven politics. At the DNC, the Collective is partnering with arts, civic, and religious organizations from different regions of Philadelphia to host what we are calling “pop-up conventions”. The idea is to gather a relatively intimate group of everyday people in a common space in your institution for a dialogue about love and politics. The prompting questions will be “Why Love? Why Now? Why Us?” Our hope is that these pop-up conventions will serve as catalysts for further dialogues and work in your community in the coming months and years. There will be one pop-up taking place for each day of the DNC. The schedule and sites are as follows: Monday July 25, 6:30-8:00 pm Colored Girls Museum (Germantown) http://www.thecoloredgirlsmuseum.com/ Tuesday July 26 1:30 - 3:00 pm Fleisher Art Memorial http://fleisher.org/ Wednesday July 27 6:30-8:00 pm Church of the Advocate http://www.churchoftheadvocate.org/ Thursday July 28 1:30-3:00 pm Eastern State Penitentiary http://www.easternstate.org/ The sites are distributed in different regions of Philadelphia. Our hope is that the dialogues at the pop-ups about love-driven politics will engage everyday folks from the respective regions. Note: Derrick Harkins mentioned that Union Theological Seminary might be willing to reach out to the its alumni base about the pop-ups. (We recognize that the final pop-up overlaps with the Union-sponsored panel. We can look into moving up the time of the pop-up to avoid scheduling conflicts.) We hope that each of you will be willing to reach out to your respective networks and let them know about the pop-ups. The other major activity that the Collective is organizing are an array of impromptu interviews in and around the DNC site as well as around the city. We plan to record and archive these interviews. In addition to the “person on the street” interviews, we also will be conducting a smaller number of Facebook Live interviews with folks at the DNC site. We are partnering with Columbia University’s Digital Storytelling Lab, the blog *Refinery29.com <http://refinery29.com>,* and the love-based consortium *WeStandwithLove.org* <http://westandwithlove.org> to distribute curated versions of the interviews and other findings from Philadelphia. The organizing questions for the interviews are as follows: ** How might we transform an American political climate and culture that is increasingly marked by anger, self-interest, cynicism, and the pursuit of power? * ** And what does love have to do with it? * ** Why Love? Why Now? Why Us?* We are very excited to announce that we are partnering with Hosan Lee and the empathy-based start-up social media app *TableTribes* for the interviews. TableTribes is designed to bring people into face-to-face, empathy-based dialogues about pressing issues of the day such as racism and sexuality rights. Please let us know if you have any questions. We deeply appreciate your partnership and solidarity. Fwd: Monetary Plan Overview - Monetary Trust Initiative
by Michel Bauwens 14 Jul '16

14 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Monetary Trust Initiative <uli(a)global-partners.com> Date: Fri, Jul 15, 2016 at 12:05 AM Subject: Monetary Plan Overview - Monetary Trust Initiative To: Michel <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Monetary Plan Overview View this email in your browser <http://us10.campaign-archive1.com/?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40e42c&id=79cb1cdcf…> Monetary Plan Overview There is an increasing but vaguely defined malaise in the general public that all is not as it should be with our banking and monetary system. First we had the Great Recession of 2007/2008, then followed by various attempts at stabilization and stimulation, including bouts of Quantitative Easing, Zero Interest Rate Policies, and now, in what can be perceived as almost panic, many countries experimenting with Negative Interest Rate Policies. Experts around the world are starting to look at structural alternatives, as it seems that the “silver bullet” no longer exists – if it ever did. The shortcomings of the fractional reserve banking system have been known for a long time, and various implementations of reforms continue to be proposed. Among others, former Governor of the Bank of England [Lord Mervyn King, 2010] has called it the worst of all possible monetary systems and has called for urgent reforms. Lord Adair Turner, the former chairman of the UK’s Financial Services Authority, agrees, although he has not stated it as strongly. For the generally accepted properties of money (medium of exchange, unit of account, store of value, and standard of deferred payments to function properly, the monetary system in which money is issued and circulates through the economy must adhere to the fundamental principles of honesty, integrity, and justice. Such a system creates trust between the people using the system and those administering it. It provides a foundation upon which prosperity is available to all and inter-generational savings can be built and sustained. The problem is that we have a money system that is debt-based instead of value-based. When a private bank makes a loan to an individual or company, the money constituting that loan does not come from previous savers but instead is created ex nihilo by the bank for that particular loan. This process is called “deposit creation”. Conversely, when a loan is repaid, money does not remain on the bank’s balance sheet, it disappears. As counterintuitive as it seems, loan repayments (as also defaults) are the antithesis of money creation. Just as banks punch numbers into computers to create money, they do the same to destroy it when loans are repaid. As Robert Hemphill of the Atlanta Federal Reserve observed in the 1930s: *“We are completely dependent on the commercial banks. Someone has to borrow every dollar we have in circulation, cash or credit. If the banks create ample synthetic money, we are prosperous; if not, we starve.” *The fact that the general population does not understand this, but instead thinks that banks simply intermediate funds from savers to borrowers, creates deception among the general populace and routine misdiagnoses among legislators. Because in our present system debt creates money, the increase in the money supply needed for price stability (or to generate the mild inflation the Fed claims to want) always demands an increase in debt. This means therefore that a country that has a larger money supply must also have more total debt (i.e., governmental and private combined). Excess debt has been, and always will be, a drain on the productive capacity of individuals as well as nations, as it has to be serviced out of funds that otherwise would be available for purchases of real goods and services. Our present system thus requires the perpetuation of debt on such a scale that it threatens the very fabric of society. It therefore stands in direct opposition to the principles that should be inherent in any monetary system. To have continuing price stability the amount of new money creation needs to be in a rough equilibrium with the increase or decrease in our total production of goods and services. This is currently controlled through a number of factors, the largest of which during normal times is the management of interest rates by the national central bank, in the US case the Federal Reserve Bank. A decrease in interest rates tends to stimulate the economy by encouraging the issuing of more loans, because the price of the lent money (in terms of interest payments) decreases. This increase in loan volume increases our money supply. As the economy comes close to overheating, the opposite is achieved through an increase in interest rates, slowing the economy down. We routinely find ourselves in unsustainable situations, as the fractional reserve banking system inherent in its functioning triggers and/or amplifies business cycles both in the expansionary and contractionary phases. For instance, in order to create banking stability and forestall runs on banks, collateral is demanded for loans, some of which is rated better than others from a regulatory perspective. One of the more highly rated types of collateral is real estate, and therefore banks lend extensively by way of mortgages. The difficulty is that in the business cycle upswing house values increase, leading to higher levels of mortgage borrowing against the same properties, which in turn implies additional money creation and higher prices, leading to yet higher mortgage debt, leading to yet higher prices and so on in a continuous spiral until the debt payments become unsustainable. As banks sense this, they pull back on the mortgage levels they are willing to fund, tighten the credit criteria, and thereby cause a decrease in mortgage funding liquidity. Although this process is completely rational from an individual bank’s perspective, in the aggregate the resultant shock tends to become systemic leading to sharp drops in house prices, foreclosures, bankruptcies, and general economic mayhem. Our goal is to see the monetary and banking system changed so that the system of money creation harnesses the value of a nation’s production and minimizes human manipulation of our money supply. This methodology was first proposed by Frank Knight, Henry Simons, Irving Fisher and others during the Great Depression, and supported by almost 100% of all American economists. Recent academic literature exists to mold this into our modern framework. It can be shown to result in lower taxes, higher productivity, lower aggregate debt, shallower business cycles, and greater wealth equality. How would this work and has it ever been done before? In short, money creation would become value-based instead of debt-based. Value-based money is also often called “sovereign money” in the literature. Based broadly on an objective of price stability (and as explained further below, controlled by a Monetary Commission), Treasury would issue money for deposit into its account at the Fed, which would be used for part or all of the following: payment toward the federal budget, payment for per-capita-based transfers to states, and payments directly to citizens (e.g., a negative income tax could be used). As Thomas Edison famously observed in an interview reported in The New York Times in 1921: *“If the Nation can issue a dollar bond it can issue a dollar bill. The element that makes the bond good makes the bill good also. The difference between the bond and the bill is that the bond lets the money broker collect twice the amount of the bond and an additional 20%. Whereas the currency, the honest sort provided by the Constitution pays nobody but those who contribute in some useful way. It is absurd to say our Country can issue bonds and cannot issue currency. Both are promises to pay, but one fattens the usurer and the other helps the People.”* Our proposed solution is a Trust Banking System, under which the creation of money would be safeguarded by a transparent entity, the Monetary Commission. Although independent, it would be operated by the Federal Reserve Bank but owned by Treasury (which is equal to being owned by the citizens). In essence, the creation of money would be democratized. The money created by it would be injected into the economy as broadly as possible. This means that rather than pull the public and country further into debt, that money would work in the public interest to create jobs and fuel the “real economy,” which is the part of the economy that is concerned with producing goods and services, as opposed to the part of the economy that is concerned with buying and selling on the financial markets. In a Trust Banking System, when a deposit is made at a deposit bank into the depositor's account, through the Depository Window, the funds continue to belong to the depositor (rather than becoming an IOU of the bank as under the current system). This would all be covered under the standard depository agreement between the bank and the customer. 100% of the depository base will at all times be covered by cash in the vault or deposits at the Fed. The only source of income for a bank from the Depository Window would be for payment services. No deposit creation would exist in this system and thus no new money could be created by private banks. Further, because all deposits would at all times be fully covered, the needed oversight would be minimized as the system is autonomously stable and ruinous bank runs would be impossible, as cash would always be available for withdrawal. Additionally, under the Trust Banking System, lending banks would be separate institutions from deposit banks. They would be true intermediaries (as most think that banks are today) that offer investment products to those with cash wishing to have it invested, and then invest this cash, by lending it out or purchasing securities. This would be done through the Credit Window of banks but none of the funds under the Depository Window would be available for this purpose. Instead, savers and investors would subscribe to a series of offered mutual funds in say, car loans, or mortgages, or commercial loans of various kinds, and so on. These could be open or close-ended funds as desired with maturities, risk levels, and expected return levels published by the bank in advance. Thus credit would now be driven by savings rather than by deposit creation. Savers would again be rewarded for savings and interest rates would be controlled by the market rather than largely by Fed edict and actions as they are now. Has this been done before? Early into the American Civil War President Lincoln realized that the costs associated with that war would be unsustainable if funds were to be borrowed through the issuance of federal government bonds. In looking for alternatives legal under the Constitution, the government enacted the Legal Tender Act of 1862 <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40e…>. This created $150 million of non-redeemable and non-interest bearing notes. There were a number of additional acts increasing the issuance to about $450 million and several to withdraw them as private banks increased money in circulation. It is interesting to note that this represented about 40% of the monetary aggregates at the time, which would make it equivalent to the Treasury creating about $5 trillion today. According to the Federal Reserve Bank, there are still about $240 million in circulation today as worn notes were replaced by the Fed until 1971. They were identical in purchasing power once in circulation and were distinguishable only in that the serial numbers were in red. This type of currency called US Notes (USN) came to be colloquially known as “Greenbacks”. As debt represents the acquisition of current purchasing power in exchange for future liabilities, USNs are seen as “notes of credit” as they do not create any future liability. They are quite distinct from Federal Reserve Notes (FRN) in that FRNs are created through the issuance of debt (personal, corporate, or governmental), and create more of the same as the underlying debt demands interest payments. USNs on the other hand are issued directly by the Treasury (through the Federal Reserve) and although they are legally listed as debt (there is no formal equity accounting with the government) they are not redeemable by anything other than themselves and accrue no interest payments. They are in a category one could call "no-debt debt" as they create no future obligation. This is acknowledged by today's federal debt legislation which explicitly exempts them. USNs were tested in a Supreme Court decision, Knox v. Lee, May 1, 1871, which established that the federal government through the Department of the Treasury had the right to issue money as legal tender for the payment of all debts and that this did not conflict with the Constitution. This has never been overturned. See 79 US 457 <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40e…>. Some have argued that the Constitution's Coinage clause (Article 1, Section 8, Clause 5) only applies to physical coins in spite of this Supreme Court decision. A lengthy historical review of that debate was published in the Harvard Business Review, volume 31 called “Understanding the Coinage Clause <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40…>” by Robert G. Natelson which comes to the conclusion that Treasury was meant to have the right to create (paper) money. The history of US Note emissions is well documented in* A Monetary History of the United States, 1867-1960* by Milton Friedman and Anna Schwarz, considered to be the definitive book on the era. How to do this? Once all factors are planned in advance, the transition from our current system would occur over a weekend. The value of the bank top-up needed to convert from a 10% reserve system to a full trust system could cover much of the federal and state debt without creating any inflation. Without today’s interest payment on federal debt, plus the increase in government income through the Monetary Commission, about $850 billion per annum would be available, reducing or eliminating deficits. Although this would significantly ease our country’s debt, it is by no means a panacea. This transition would bring us to a state of financial stability, but measures would have to be taken to maintain that state. It would mean that as a country we would have to accept and live in financial responsibility. The flexibility granted by the Fractional Reserve Banking System would no longer exist under a Trust Banking System, but it is this flexibility and untenable system that has led us to this state of crisis, time and time again. The result would be a banking system that functions as a structure sustaining the whole of society. In conjunction with the mores of a democratic society, the power previously held by the banks would belong to the people and would be held within a far more accountable and transparent framework with full disclosure. In contrast to the Fractional Reserve Banking System, a Trust Banking System would be innately stable because all deposits would be covered by *real money* within a *real economy*. Money creation through new monetary policy would become steady, predictable, accountable, and effective; investments would be driven by savings and not by money creation, and it would result in an overall enhancement of economic performance. 1 Bank of England: Money Creation in the Modern Economy <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40…> 2 We are well aware that the velocity of money is an integral part of this equilibrium, but because velocity is mean reverting, we are leaving it out of this discussion for sake of simplicity. 3 Among others, see Kumhof, Michael and Benes, Jaromir https://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/wp/2012/wp12202.pdf <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40e…> 4 As per Limited Purpose Banking, Dr. Laurence Kotlikoff, see https://www.aeaweb.org/aea/2012conference/program/retrieve.php?pdfid=568 <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40e…> 5 See the FRED information from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis Economic Research here: https://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/series/M2/ <http://ulikortsch.us10.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ea8be5c5a50154f78cb40…> 6 The Congressional Research Service states that US Notes are not part of current debt limitation legislation. We struggle with moving from familiar surroundings to new, unknown territories. Yet, when it comes to the greatest single challenge we face today, our resistance to change will surely cause massive and unforeseeable changes. Climate change is upon us. We know with certainty that our behavior is impacting the planet we inhabit. The last time atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide were this high was millions of years ago, long before *Homo sapiens* appeared. This places us in an entirely new era of risk, for which we have no precedent or reliable benchmark. The increasing reality of climate change attributable to the burning of fossil fuels and the speed of changes to our planet has been well documented. What will we do with this vital information – change or be changed? In the immediate term, new drilling techniques and the lifting of the Iran economic embargo have opened up new supplies of oil and gas, and subsequently there has been a downward trend in the price of oil over the last several years. We believe that fossil fuels are in the early stages (perhaps not so early in the case of coal) of a structural decline in demand that will ultimately result in coal, oil and gas no longer representing a meaningful percentage of the global economy’s energy mix by 2050, with investment and growth in the sector reversing long before that. With utilities, transportation and the corporate world making the transition to renewable energy, I don’t see an increase in the demand for fossil fuels. This should be good news, for, as access to reliable, affordable energy increases, so does the quality of life for hundreds of millions of people. Energy keeps schools and businesses running, computers working, cities shining, and cars moving. Without the availability of energy, the global poverty rate could not have dropped by more than half since 1990, allowing the opportunity to improve lives across a wide sphere. And yet, in a skewed parallel, 1.3 billion people lack access to the most basic energy services and the economic, environmental and health benefits they provide. So how can we ensure that the most threatening climate change consequences are avoided, but also ensure equitable access to energy? The answer is renewable energy. Both at home and around the world, the ways that we produce and consume electricity is evolving. The many drivers of this transformation include public policy, consumer trends and demands, business models, and technological innovation. The ultimate outcome of the changes remains to be seen, but a clear direction is apparent. A clean energy future is here and poised for rapid growth. Clean energy attracted a record $329 billion in global investment in 2015 despite low oil and gas prices. That record was due to investment all over the world – the US, China, Africa, Latin America, India, and elsewhere. Renewable energy technologies are the major growth story coming out of Paris, making prudent investments in the clean energy space a seemingly smart bet.
