Fwd: "Post Democracy"

It designates states that are conducted by fully operating democratic systems (elections are being held, governments fall and there is freedom of speech), but whose application is progressively limited. A small elite is taking the tough decisions and co-opts the democratic institutions. Crouch further developed the idea in an article called Is there a liberalism beyond social democracy?[1] for the think tank Policy Network and in his subsequent book The Strange Non-Death of Neo-Liberalism. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [P2P-URBANISM] Open Architecture license
by Michel Bauwens 25 Jul '16

25 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jonathan Dortheimer <jonathan(a)dortheimer.com> Date: Sun, Jul 24, 2016 at 11:15 PM Subject: [P2P-URBANISM] Open Architecture license To: P2P-Urbanism <p2p-urbanism-world-atlas(a)googlegroups.com> Hi, I would like to introduce this group to the first Open-Source Architecture (OSL) license to exist. Open Architecture is important to allow a free and evolving creative environment by making architectural intellectual property free and open. Here's the license template: https://github.com/dortheimer/open-architecture What does the license do: - It allows architects to share designs with their peers, limiting liability. - It allow architects to use other's design with permission and no limitations - facilitating a sharing-economy between professionals - it provides credits to the creators. - It allows to change the designs. - It doesn't limit the use or application. - It allows free redistribution. - It applies on the blueprints only in a way that allows commercial use like the permissive open source licenses (MIT, Apache, BSD etc...) - It doesn't limit the building owner. Why do architects need a special license? Architecture is made from blueprints and structures, genotype and phenotype, source code and binary code. But's it differentiates from software in the way it is build, while the reproduction cost of software is almost nothing, a structure building cost is the main expense. Who is the licensee? Is the building owner? Maybe the renter? Or maybe any one who uses it? The answer is simple, the building isn't digital, isn't portable and isn't licensed under the terms of the license. That's why open-source and creative-commons licenses are not usable with architecture, because the license is passed to the building and then things get messed up legally. What about DIY architecture and the social ideas of Open-source architecture? A lot was written about open-source architecture by Kaspori (2003), Fuller & Haque (2008), Sallingaros (2011), Ratti (2011) and Ratti and Claudel (2015), but very was actually done, because the framework doesn't exists and the open-source architecture ideas have been related to "Architecture without architects", DIY architecture and Alexander's (1977) ideas. But open source isn't about the amateurs - it's about the professionals, delivering faster, inexpensive and better products. I would love to hear what you think, Any suggestions are welcome! from extraction to (re)generation, the core shift today
by Michel Bauwens 25 Jul '16

25 Jul '16

it's about this core shift fro extractive to generative, very much worth reading see http://regenerationinternational.org/2016/03/07/meet-john as suggested by Kevin Barron in fb: Stop what you are doing and read this now. "You can get higher yields of monocultures for a short time but you ultimately destroy the basic fundamental viability of the entire system. So you are creating deserts. This is what happened in the Loess Plateau and this is what happened in every cradle of civilization." Michel Bauwens <https://www.facebook.com/mbauwens> you will be interested in what he has to say about economy, and specifically money. <https://www.facebook.com/wesley.roe.56?fref=nf> Wesley Roe <https://www.facebook.com/wesley.roe.56?fref=nf> <https://www.facebook.com/wesley.roe.56?fref=nf> 11 hrs <https://www.facebook.com/wesley.roe.56/posts/10154309456679593> · Meet John Dennis Liu <https://www.facebook.com/john.d.liu>, the Indiana Jones of Landscape Restoration He’s known to some as the “Indiana Jones” of landscape degradation and restoration. John D. Liu, ecosystem restoration researcher, educator and filmmaker, has dedicated his life to sharing real-world examples of once-degraded landscapes newly restored to their original fertile and biodiverse beauty. Liu is director of the Environmental Education Media Project (EEMP), ecosystem ambassador for the Commonland Foundation and a visiting research fellow at the Netherlands Institute of Ecology of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. We recently sat down with Liu, the newest member of the Regeneration International (RI) Steering Committee. In this interview, Liu walks us through large-scale ecosystem restoration projects in China and Rwanda. We learn that when humans work with nature, degraded landscapes can be restored in a matter of years, and economies can be regenerated, putting food security and climate change mitigation within our reach. In order to survive as a species, Liu explains, humanity must shift from commodifying nature to ‘naturalizing’ our economy. Interview with John D. Liu, February 4, 2016 RI: What is the significance of the Paris Agreement, reached at the COP21 Climate Summit in December (2015), for the pioneers, such as yourself, of the landscape restoration movement? Liu: There is now recognition of soil carbon, which was not the case in the past. The best and perhaps only way for humanity to massively affect carbon disequilibrium in the atmosphere is to restore natural ecological function of soils through the restoration of biomass, biodiversity and accumulated organic matter. One of the things that I have been learning about, and that has most impressed me, is the difference between natural systems, which have huge organic layers, and human systems, which are massively degraded and actually have lost their organic material. In Paris, we’ve started to turn the corner. Instead of just talking about greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, we’re now seeing [climate change] spoken about as a holistic problem. When you see it holistically, you find out that CO2 and GHG emissions are a symptom of systematic dysfunction on a planetary scale… Human impact on the climate is not simply emissions; it is degradation. There is a way forward. That is why I am so excited about the early work I did in the Loess Plateau and in Ethiopia, Rwanda and other countries. When you increase organic matter, you increase biomass and you protect biodiversity. You get a completely different result than if you just totally destroy those systems. So I don’t think that the political agreements go far enough, but they are starting to reflect reality, which is better than before. RI: In Paris, RI encountered skepticism about the potential power of regenerative agriculture and landscape restoration to restore climate stability and feed the world. Can you tell us about your experience with the Loess Plateau restoration project in China and how it impacted your perspective on the potential of restoration? Liu: There was a moment in the mid-1800s when Thomas Malthus reported that the rate of agricultural increase was happening arithmetically while human population growth was logarithmic. He posited huge famine and this pushed the development of industrial agriculture. But what I’ve seen is that this is based on huge assumptions and those assumptions are basically false. If you think that you can get higher productivity by reducing hydrological function, or the natural fertility in the land or the biodiversity of a biome then you are just sadly mistaken. You can get higher yields of monocultures for a short time but you ultimately destroy the basic fundamental viability of the entire system. So you are creating deserts. This is what happened in the Loess Plateau and this is what happened in every cradle of civilization. Landscape restoration does not only change ecological function, it changes the socio-economic function and when you get down to it, it changes the intention of human society. So if the intention of human society is to extract, to manufacture, to buy and sell things, then we are still going to have a lot of problems. But when we generate an understanding that the natural ecological functions that create air, water, food and energy are vastly more valuable than anything that has ever been produced or bought and sold, or anything that ever will be produced and bought and sold – this is the point where we turn the corner to a consciousness which is much more sustainable. RI: It’s almost as if a global paradigm shift is needed to start accounting for nature in the economy. ‘Naturalizing’ the economy as you would say. Liu: We have to be very careful not to commoditize nature. We need to naturalize the economy. What this means to me is that natural ecological functions are more valuable than ‘stuff.’ When we understand that, then the economy is based on ecological function. And that is exactly what we need in order to mitigate and adapt to climate change, to ensure food security, and to give every individual on the planet equal human rights. Suddenly we are in another paradigm. It’s similar to the shift from flat earth to round earth paradigm. We need to realize that there is no ‘us and them.’ There is just us. There is one earth and one humanity. We have to act as a species on a planetary scale because we will all be affected by climate change. We have to come together to decide: What do we know? What do we understand? What do we believe as a species? RI: Apart from the ecosystem benefits, the Loess Plateau project also helped lift 2.5 million people in four of the poorest provinces in China out of poverty. Is that correct? Liu: Well, there are different ways to look at it because the Loess Plateau project influenced more than just the project areas. It changed national policy. Some of the negative behaviors, such as slope farming, tree cutting or free ranging of goats and sheep—behaviors that were devastating to biodiversity, biomass and organic material—were banned nationwide because of the work done on the Loess Plateau. Landscape restoration does not only change ecological function, it changes the socio-economic function and when you get down to it, it changes the intention of human society. So if the intention of human society is to extract, to manufacture, to buy and sell things, then we are still going to have a lot of problems. But when we generate an understanding that the natural ecological functions that create air, water, food and energy are vastly more valuable than anything that has ev RI: Tell us about your work in Rwanda. Liu: Rwanda is an interesting case study because of the 1994 genocide. This sort of a situation is ground zero. It is a reset. Every family, every person was affected. In 2006, I was invited to Rwanda by the British government and the Global Environment Facility (GEF). What I saw in my travels were bare hillsides, erosion and sediment loads in river systems. I presented my findings to the president, prime minister, parliament, cabinet, ministries of environment and agriculture, universities and press. We put films on TV. I explained each of these natural systems and what you have to do to correct it. And at the same moment in time, everyone in Rwanda was talking about ecological function. Several weeks later, the government wrote me a letter saying thank you for coming to Rwanda to share your experiences. Then they wrote me a second letter, in which they said we believe you and we’re rewriting our land use policy laws to reflect that economic development in Rwanda must be based on ecological function. The measures Rwanda has taken have led to regeneration. They had food security when there was famine in East Africa. They have had increasing use of renewable energies and lessening of dependence on fossil fuels. If human beings can go to hell yet they can somehow come back and work to build a fair, equitable and sustainable society, that is a good thing. We need to watch carefully how Rwanda develops, as a lesson for the world. RI: Can you tell us about the widespread detrimental impacts that industrial agriculture is having, particularly with regards to loss of biodiversity? Why is biodiversity essential to sustain life as we know it? Liu: Evolutionary trends favor more biodiversity, more organic matter. The industrial or degenerative agriculture model favors less biodiversity, less biomass, less organic matter. This disrupts photosynthesis, hydrological regulation and moisture, temperature and it artificially elevates evaporation rates. Industrial agriculture sterilizes soil with UV radiation. It is just wrongheaded. Humans went down the wrong path. But once we begin to understand these evolutionary trends, we understand that we have to get back in alignment with them. That is where regenerative agriculture and landscape restoration come in. We’ve seen the results at large scale and we’ve seen them on a smaller scale. This is the way forward for sequestration of carbon, this is the way forward for fertile healthy soils, this is the way forward for food security this is the way forward for meaningful work for everyone. We understand this. This is the basis of wealth and sustainability for humanity. RI: If there were one behavior or habit of humans that you could magically change, what would it be? Liu: It is clear right now that economics is driving today’s problems. There are a lot of assumptions in economics that are simply false. Economics now says that extraction, manufacturing, buying and selling can create wealth. This is bullshit. We are creating poverty by doing this. We are creating degradation of the landscapes. So few people in a tiny minority are accumulating vast material possessions in this system, while billions of people are living in abject poverty at the edges of large degraded ecosystems. Others can no longer even stay in their homes, and millions of people are migrating to escape from the horrible conditions. Well this cannot work. This must change. What I have noticed is that ecological function is vastly more valuable that extraction, production, consumption, and buying and selling things. What we really need to understand is: “What is money?” If I were going to leave one thing for the people to think about it is this: What is money? What is it? It is basically a storehouse of value, a means of exchange, and a trust mechanism. That means it is an abstract concept; it can be anything that we want it to be. If we say that money comes from ecological function instead from extraction, manufacturing buying and selling, then we have a system in which all human efforts go toward restoring, protecting and preserving ecological function. That is what we need to mitigate and adapt to climate change, to ensure food security, to ensure that human civilizations survive. Our monetary system must reflect reality. We could have growth, not from stuff, but growth from more functionality. If we do that and we value that higher than things, we will survive. *** Alexandra Groome is Campaign & Events Coordinator for Regeneration International, a project of the Organic Consumers Association. MY RESPONSE: wonderful indeed kevin, and I would say that this shift from extraction to re-generation is exactly what the p2p foundation, like many other forces in this transition, stand for; the only difference is , that our strength and focus is less on nature and the environment, than on human communities, i.e. how to generate social and economic models that are generative towards communities and their commons, and that includes nature. It's just that it is not our core skillset. This being said, one of our 3 strategic priorities is sustainable manufacturing and we have a research project, led by Xavier BlaqSwans <https://www.facebook.com/xavier.blaqswans?hc_location=ufi> andCeline Trefle <https://www.facebook.com/celine.trefle?hc_location=ufi>, on the 'thermodynamics of peer production', to show how crucial p2p/commons is for the ecological transition as well. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Against Ecocide (GTN Discussion)
by Michel Bauwens 22 Jul '16

22 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Thu, Jul 21, 2016 at 8:45 PM Subject: Against Ecocide (GTN Discussion) To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com >From J Kim Wright <jkimwright(a)gmail.com> ------------------------------------------------------- For many years, I've been following the efforts to make ecocide a crime against peace. On the one hand, I am encouraged that so many people are beginning to feel a connection to the Earth and wanting to take action. I celebrate their passion and commitment. I am elated that conversations are exploring the best way to approach the subject. On the other hand, I am distressed about using an old paradigm approach, an adversarial court system, as the means for addressing the harm being done. My work is in the new paradigm of law that is grounded in an awareness of our interconnectedness, where lawyers see themselves as peacemakers, problem-solvers, and healers of conflicts. In this new paradigm, lawyers around the world are inventing and reinventing models of engaging conflict in productive and conscious ways. The old adversarial system is based upon separation. It focuses on differences and steers away from common ground. I believe that separation from the Earth, and from each other, is the root of much that is not working in the world. Earth is seen as a resource to claim, to tame, and to exploit. Frankly, the same attitude is not uncommon when applied to human beings. Cogs in a machine, we are the means to an end: the accumulation of property. The adversarial court system fortifies and exacerbates the separation. Of the many non-adversarial models that have been emerging over the last two or three decades, I find that restorative justice offers the most possibility for healing in environmental crisis. Restorative Justice has its origins in the circle practices and tribal lodges of indigenous peoples. Restorative justice focuses on healing the harm to everyone, including the sense of shame and separation that is characteristic of the so-called perpetrator. As Martin Luther King Jr. described: Justice is Love correcting that which revolts against Love. RJ has been used in small circles in elementary schools, in families, in neighborhoods, and in addressing large-scale harms such as the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. RJ allows all the stakeholders to come together, recognizing that we're all intertwined in the problem, that it is our problem to solve together. There is truth-telling without finger-pointing. In a restorative justice circle, each person must share from his or her own experiences. Every voice is equal. Power comes within, not from a role. If I were sitting in a circle with an oil company executive, I might be talking about how I drive a car and I use gasoline, I would admit that I run the air conditioning in the summer. I would talk about how being a consumer, I realize that I am complicit in oil spills in the Gulf of Mexico and fracking in Colorado. The oil company executive would hear my pain and the circle would hold space for her to share her perspective. Human to Human, rather than Enemy to Enemy, we would invite the perspectives of everyone who is touched by the harm. Connecting in this way, compassion and empathy are likely to emerge. Thinking together becomes possible. It is much easier to point the finger at an Other and blame, than it is to engage in the hard questions of how we are going to live together on the planet. Restorative Justice recognizes that we are all in this together, that we must find solutions that honor all the stakeholders (including Nature). J. Kim Wright **************************** Friday, July 1, 2016 >From Paul Raskin Dear GTN: Our JULY discussion will approach GTI’s overarching theme – shaping a civilized planetary future – from a fresh angle: the legal effort now gaining traction to criminalize the wanton destruction of nature. Femke Wijdekop takes this on in a new Viewpoint, “Against Ecocide: Legal Protection for Earth.” Femke introduces the idea of the “rights of nature” and the history of the concept of “ecocide.” However, her primary focus is on action, specifically, the movement to add ecocide as a crime against peace under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. Expanding the juridical architecture for protecting rights will surely be a vital prong in the systemic movement we so urgently need. But to what degree can it succeed in isolation? And what is the larger role of law and legal activism in a Great Transition? Please read Femke’s short piece at www.greattransition.org/publication/against-ecocide and weigh in with your thoughts. It will be published in August, along with selected comments drawn from the forthcoming discussion Comments are welcome through JULY 31. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: andrew gryf paterson <agryfp(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Jul 21, 2016 at 9:21 PM Subject: [commoning] Bringing CopyLove’s Audiovisual Source Code to Helsinki and Beyond To: commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org Greetings Commoners and friends! Hopefully you find inspiration in our efforts in Helsinki to spread CopyLove across from one side of Europe to another for this year's Pixelache festival (http://festival.pixelache.ac) which takes the general theme of 'Interfaces for Empathy'.. Bringing key persons from ZEMOS98.org Sevilla, Andalusian Spain, to Helsinki, Finland. I share below via P2P Foundation's blog (sorry for cross-posting) the campaign effort with my Helsinki-based friends and colleagues Andrea Botero and Mariana Salgado.. & in dialogue with Felipe Gonzalez Gil from ZEMOS98.. With the #CopyLove #Helsinki campaign we hope to learn from the experience: How to make multi-stakeholder crowdfunding campaigns promoting the commons, feminist care-economics; Mix together both migrant and native concerns and interests; Promote commons-orientated crowdfunding platforms such as Goteo in new locations; And also imagine crowdfunding as a means to support cultural mobility and exchange. We will make available the outgoing presentations and documentations, as well as our learnings after a hopefully successful campaign. If you feel something for our ambitions, welcome to help support our cause also by spreading the word, or give something into the pot. #CopyLove #Helsinki http://goteo.cc/pixelachen Best wishes, andrew -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: [New post] Bringing CopyLove’s Audiovisual Source Code to Helsinki and Beyond Date: Thu, 21 Jul 2016 08:00:26 +0000 From: P2P Foundation <donotreply(a)wordpress.com> <donotreply(a)wordpress.com> To: agryfp(a)gmail.com Goteo posted: "Pixelache Helsinki wants to bring key members of ZEMOS98 collective from Sevilla, Spain, to the 2016 edition of their festival, under the campaign title 'CopyLove Helsinki' #CopyLove #Helsinki ZEMOS98 will bring feminist-orientated care and warmth, Remix" New post on *P2P Foundation* <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?author=1585> Bringing CopyLove’s Audiovisual Source Code to Helsinki and Beyond <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/bringing-copyloves-audiovisual-source-code-h…> by Goteo <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?author=1585> Pixelache Helsinki wants to bring key members of ZEMOS98 collective from Sevilla, Spain, to the 2016 edition of their festival, under the campaign title 'CopyLove Helsinki' #CopyLove #Helsinki ZEMOS98 will bring feminist-orientated care and warmth, Remix for Bien común (Remix for the Commons), Commons spirit and Love to the North. In particular they will share their Audiovisual Source Code (Código Fuente Audiovisual) format and approach. We are hopeful we can all benefit from a 'Finnish Summer of CopyLove' gathering peer-support and attention to contribute to their and our dreams come true. During Zemos98's visit to Helsinki we will organize several events in the framework of the Pixelache Festival. We will be disseminating open practices and open formats for audiovisual creation that we firmly believe contribute to co-create ways of performing multi-cultural understanding, increase the connections between South-North, and allow us all to contribute to much needed empathy and care in the world. Main features During Zemos98 visit to Pixalache festival in Helsinki we will organize: - 2-3 public presentation events in Helsinki on the topic of CopyLove and Interfaces for Empathy. The events will take place during the Pixelache festival days 22-25.9.2016. They will be live-streamed, and the documentation archived online with commons-orientated licenses. One of the events will be in Spanish, and the other one or two in English. All the events will be simultaneously translated to another language (either English or Finnish). - 1 CopyLove workshop (registration-based) on the topic of Caring for Each Other and Interdependence. In the workshop we will crowdsource ideas and approaches towards promoting care-economics and caring commons and we will co-design and co-produce an open manual. This manual will be shared post-event with text content variably in English, Spanish and Finnish. Related events according to reward scheme to peer-supporters (See rewards). Why this is important CopyLove and Empathy are themes that speak to the current environment of tension, division and isolation that communities feel are encroaching their everyday lives. Instead, Pixelache festival creates a different narrative of collaboration and empathy that we think will greatly benefit from the input of our colleagues from Zemos98. To bring Zemos98 to Pixelache we want to reach out to: 1. Citizens worried about increasing intolerance in Finnish society and want to support concrete actions that create new narratives. 2: Alternative Economy Cultures -oriented initiatives, including crowdfunding & feminist/care economics that want to cross-pollinate their thinking across Europe. 3. To the Spanish-speaking community in the Finnish metropolitan (Helsinki)-region. 4. The Open/AvoinGLAM and AV practitioners, activists and researchers who want to learn more about the Audiovisual Source-code method and event-format, and Remix for the Commons approach. Goals of the crowdfunding campaign - Develop, disseminate and encourage the Audiovisual Source-code format as a way to talk and generate empathy and CopyLove. - Make migrant and local connections between North-South. - Promote Goteo and commons-orientated crowd-funding in Northern Europe. Team and experience We are sister festivals that only recently met after all our time apart. We care. Pixelache people have been making their festival since 2002 in Helsinki, Finland. Zemos98 people have been making their festival since 1998 in Sevilla, Finland. Both have grown up to absorb trans-disciplinary subjects and to promote Caring for the Commons around the same time (2014-2015). ZEMOS98 took the theme CopyLove as it’s festival theme in years 2012-2013 and made a successful related Goteo campaign. ZEMOS98 no longer produces a festival but focuses on other projects and has consolidated a good network around these topics in the South of Europe. Pixelache Festival in Helsinki is partly supported by the Finnish Ministry of Culture and Education and City of Helsinki, this year the full-time and part-time staff employed by the association are also co-directors of the festival (Petri Ruikka and Mari Keski-Korsu respectively). Pixelache has strong presence in the Northern European cultural scene, and benefits from a broad international network. We Care.. We are not only colleagues, but best of friends, and we want to bridge across South-North. The people specifically, focusing on the Finland-based branch of the CopyLove Helsinki campaign will be: Andrew Gryf Paterson from Pixelache has been an artist-organiser for over 12 years in Helsinki and internationally with a strong profile, focused on open-source culture and Commons-oriented strategies. In 2009 he organised the Alternative Economy Cultures symposium in that year’s festival, whereby the 2 keynote speaker’s (Michel Bauwens and Michael Albert)’s travel costs from Madrid and Massachusetts USA were fully crowdfunded. Previously part-time staff role for 4 years, he is again on the association’s board with responsibility for International Networks and Archival-tendencies. Andrea Botero is a Colombian designer and researcher based in Helsinki for over 10 years, with a keen interest in caring for the commons and participatory methods. She is co-editor of the Peer-Production in Public Services: Cases from Finland ebook (together with Paterson and Joanna Suud-Salonen), and has been lead-researcher on co-p2p.mlog.taik.fi platform at Aalto University. Mariana Salgado is an Argentinean design researcher that has worked 10 years in the cultural sector in Finland, and has actively contributed to the Finnish chapter of OpenGLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives and Museums). She was invited last year to the Hackathon Caring for the Commons at 17th ZEMOS98 Festival, and got inspired by the CopyLove sessions and Zemos98 activities. She published in Spanish the book: Diseñando un Museo Abierto (Designing an Open Museum, 2010). Mariana is an activist in her neighbourhood, and within the Spanish speaking community in Finland. *Goteo <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?author=1585>* | July 21, 2016 at 10:00 am | Tags: Audiovisual Source Code <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=audiovisual-source-c…>, Copylove <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=copylove>, Goteo <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=goteo>, Helsinki <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=helsinki>, Pixelache Festival <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=pixelache-festival>, Remix the commons <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=remix-the-commons>, Zemos98 <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=post_tag&term=zemos98> | Categories: Commons <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=commons>, Conferences <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=conferences>, Crowdfunding <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=crowdfunding>, Culture & Ideas <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=culture-ideas>, Featured Video <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=featured-video>, Open Content <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=open-content>, P2P Collaboration <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=p2p-collaboration>, P2P Society and Politics <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/?taxonomy=category&term=p2p-society-and-poli…> | URL: <http://wp.me/p4csWb-f7w>http://wp.me/p4csWb-f7w Comment <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/bringing-copyloves-audiovisual-source-code-h…> See all comments <https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/bringing-copyloves-audiovisual-source-code-h…> Unsubscribe <https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?key=d3700400c5746f7ac0de57dd2feaad78&email…> to no longer receive posts from P2P Foundation. The email below is from one of them. As per her request, I have eliminated anything that would identify her. The situation is dire. She sent this email a couple of days ago, so some of this is old news. As you know, the State of Emergency has been declared. She also sent links to some important articles. Here they are: Ayse Kadioglu: https://www.opendemocracy.net/ay-e-kad-o-lu/coup-d-tat-attempt-turkey-s-rei… Zeynep Gambetti: https://www.opendemocracy.net/zeynep-gambetti/failed-coup-attempt-in-turkey… Cihan Tugal: https://www.opendemocracy.net/cihan-tugal/turkey-coup-aftermath-between-neo… Umut Ozkirimli: https://www.opendemocracy.net/umut-ozkirimli/very-turkish-abduction-from-se… Dear friends, Thank you all for your messages of solidarity and support! I am writing this joint email to give you a brief update on the situation in Turkey. * More than 50 thousand people from different state agencies (including police, military and the judiciary) and institutions of secondary and higher education have been suspended from their positions (3000 prosecutors and judges, more than 8000 police, more than 35000 teachers and other staff from the Ministry of Education...) * ALL deans across Turkey (more than 1500) have been asked to resign (including ours), after an emergency meeting with all university presidents at the Higher Education Council. http://bianet.org/english/politics/176916-council-of-higher-education-deman… * Yesterday, no university professor (nor any other state employee) was allowed to leave the country, without authorization from Ankara. We have friends who were at the airport all day, ultimately having to return home. Today, the Higher Education Council (HEC) issued a declaration cancelling all academic & personal leaves and appointments (including sabbatical leaves). It seems that none of us can leave Turkey until further notice - including for conferences and sabbaticals. Those who are on vacation - inside or outside Turkey - are also being asked to return (has not happened at Sabanci yet, but colleagues from other state and private universities have been recalled from their vacations and leaves hours after the official letter from the HEC arrived at the universities). Tomorrow, we will have a better sense of how this will unfold. * Will they expand the purge to not only suspend academics but to more aggressively pursue the case against the academics for peace? who knows... * Licenses for 25 TV and radio stations (alleged to be affiliated with the Gulen community) have been revoked http://bianet.org/english/media/176914-rtuk-revokes-licenses-of-25-tv-radio… * You may have been reading the US (and other states') warnings regarding more ISIS attacks being expected in different parts of Turkey. From all we can gather, the security forces, the government and Erdogan are channeling all state resources towards silencing all possible opposition and controlling all institutions, at the same time as they go after the religious Gulen community that is believed to have been behind the coup attempt - instead of going after ISIS cells located across Turkey. * You may also know that since the night of the coup attempt, people have been called to gather in public squares to continue the "democracy watch" (including in Taksim, which is finally open to protests - but of course only to pro-government protests). Most of these "people" are men, almost all are government supporters, frequently chanting Islamic verses and prayers, and asking for revenge and the reinstitution of the death penalty - rather than a move towards a more democratic Turkey. * Several Alevi (heterodox, non-Sunni) neighborhoods and two churches across Turkey have been attacked by some of these "pro-democracy / anti-coup" groups... * The PM, Erdogan and other officials have announced that they will "issue arms" to civilians so that they can "protect themselves" (and read this in line of the previous bullet) * Erdogan, the PM, and the ultranationalist MHP party leader have declared that they would support the reconstitution of the death penalty... * Erdogan has also announced that "whether they like it or not, we will go ahead with the construction of the historic military barracks and a mosque in Taksim" (i.e. Gezi Park being turned into a "guarded" shopping center and who knows what else, and a big mosque being built at the entrance of Istiklal street) http://bianet.org/english/politics/176887-erdogan-we-will-build-military-ba… * Today, the PM opened the parliamentary meeting with verses from the Quran "in the name of Allah" (first time in Turkish history) - and since the night of the coup attempt, special prayers have been recited in mosques on a daily basis (in addition to the regular prayers), in addition to calls by imams to oppose the coup in the name of Allah and Islam. (the mosques have been the main means of organizing anti-coup / "pro-democracy" gatherings since Friday. * on the other hand, it has been announced that no religious services will be given for the "coup plotters" - and mind you, all Muslim funerals in Turkey are religious ceremonies by default. http://bianet.org/english/human-rights/176910-religious-affairs-no-religiou… * On the night of the coup attempt, in his speech at the Ataturk Airport, Erdogan called this failed attempt "a gift/blessing from God" - indeed, he and the government are using it to suspend even the pretense of any democratic, legal procedure... (I should of course add that, along with many others, I am relieved that the coup attempt failed rather promptly - many more lives could have been lost if it had been longer or more widespread). * Erdogan and the government have announced that they will be making a "very important" statement tomorrow - the rumor is that it will be a form of emergency rule. * No doubt, this will be followed by a move to change the constitution towards a presidential regime. This is basically where we stand as of tonight... I wanted to send a brief update for you all before things get even worse - as they might. -- *Click here for Peter's recent writings* <https://www.dropbox.com/s/o8s52g2y905rq6w/WatermanGmailSignaturePanel%20%20…> _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] French State of Emergency: Overbidding Mass Surveillance
by Michel Bauwens 21 Jul '16

21 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Thu, Jul 21, 2016 at 7:48 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] French State of Emergency: Overbidding Mass Surveillance To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Press Release *Tags :* FRENCH STATE OF EMERGENCY, SURVEILLANCE, PRIVACY, FRANÇOIS HOLLANDE, MANUEL VALLS La Quadrature du Net — For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/french-state-of-emergency-overbidding-mass-… French State of Emergency: Overbidding Mass Surveillance Paris, 21 July 2016 — *Once again <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/again-op-ed-philippe-aigrain>. The French State of Emergency has been extended until January. In reaction to violence shaking the country and with the presidential election of 2017 only a few months away, political leaders are indulging an ignominious orgy of security-driven policy. Not content with prolonging the state of emergency, they have also modified the Surveillance Law passed last year to extend, once again, mass surveillance.* It is hard to believe that only 48 hours have passed since the bill <http://www.assemblee-nationale.fr/14/projets/pl3968.asp> was sent to the French National Assembly. With incredible speed, in the middle of summer, the Law Committee of the Senate has given carte blanche to rapporteur Michel Mercier (UDI - centre-right wing and former Minister of Justice) to erase so-called "rigidities" in the Surveillance Law, last year <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/shame-on-france-french-constitutional-counc…> . The provision <https://www.legifrance.gouv.fr/affichCodeArticle.do?cidTexte=LEGITEXT000025…>, much criticised during the parliamentary debates at that time, provides for real-time scanning the connection data of individuals suspected of terrorist activities. As soon as of the November attacks, with ink on the Surveillance Law not yet dry, an official for the Ministry of Interior was explaining that with lightened control procedures, "by cross-referencing data with an already-known very powerful algorithm, we could be able to monitor those 11 700 persons in real time"1 <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/french-state-of-emergency-overbidding-mass-…> . Then, again according to *Le Monde*, during the previous National Council of Intelligence last January, the decision <http://www.lemonde.fr/police-justice/article/2016/02/04/les-11-700-fiches-s…> was taken to "put under surveillance all the communication data of the 11 700 persons with a *S-File* linked with radical islamism". Until now, this form of surveillance targeted only individuals who had been "identified as a [terrorist] threat". But now, in accordance with this amendment <http://www.senat.fr/amendements/commissions/2015-2016/803/Amdt_COM-15.html>, the code of national security stipulates that an individual has to merely be identified as "potentially related to a threat" or to belong to "the entourage" of individuals "potentially...", to have his or her traffic data analysed in real time, for four months, by intelligence services. Despite the vagueness of the terms, it is fairly clear that several dozens, hundreds or even thousands of persons are directly concerned here -- not only the 11 700 individuals who are already identified as "S". This severe extension of the field covered by this disposition is all the more shocking that in late May, testifying before the parliamentary investigation committee on 2015 terrorist attacks <https://wiki.laquadrature.net/Auditions_rapport_13_novembre#Acc.C3.A8s_en_t…>, François Delon, president of the CNCTR, said that this technique [of surveillance in real time] " was beginning to be applied, but only on a small group of people." He also repeated <https://wiki.laquadrature.net/Auditions_rapport_13_novembre#Quotas_suffisan…> that the number of interceptions of communications (real time surveillance of both metadata and content of communications) was much lower than the authorised quota, 2700 individual and simultaneous individual surveillances - quota he judged "sufficient". And yet there we are. Two months later, in less than 48 hours and without any real debate, the disposition that was supposed to be a relatively targeted measure becomes mass surveillance. In the short run, it feeds the political strategies of a few irresponsible people seeking exposure. But in the long run, it could come to epitomise the mismanagement of security and methodical destruction of the rule of law, that almost all parliamentarians have been voting for the past 2 years. Besides prolonging the state of emergency, the law as adopted also changes the regulations on house searches for digital data. Censured after a decision <https://www.laquadrature.net/fr/conseil-constitutionnel-censure-perquisitio…> of the French Constitutional Council last February, those searches can now resume (without anyone knowing what will happen to the enormous data collected during the first three months of the state of emergency). Tuesday evening, as an anchor on a news channel was asking a Far Right-Wing personality (not short on crazy proposals) if carrying fire guns should be legalised "for all citizens" <https://youtu.be/Fe7MX3hJz0M?t=11m30s>, MP Isabelle Attard was saying those words at the National Assembly: We have witnessed, since the night of Thursday to Friday, a security-driven overbid as we have never seen before. It has been a race to the more months of state of emergency prolongation, all the way up to making it permanent. More weapons, more war, more mass surveillance, more prison, more preventive confinement, more internment camps. The full report shows that to this sentence, "several MPs from Les Républicains" answered: "So what?". *So? So we repeat what Philippe Aigrain wrote here <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/again-op-ed-philippe-aigrain> on Tuesday: that "those who want to resist the mechanics of violence will have to plough the soil of the possible, when it is the very idea of politics that some are burying."* - 1. <https://www.laquadrature.net/en/french-state-of-emergency-overbidding-mass-…> See the anonymous official source quoted in the article of the French newspaper, Le Monde <http://www.lemonde.fr/attaques-a-paris/article/2015/11/19/les-failles-de-la…> on the 19 November. About La Quadrature du Net La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. Fwd: [commoning] CfP: Workshop "The Law of the Commons" with Ugo Mattei
by Michel Bauwens 21 Jul '16

21 Jul '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <lukas.peter(a)uzh.ch> Date: Thu, Jul 21, 2016 at 4:21 PM Subject: [commoning] CfP: Workshop "The Law of the Commons" with Ugo Mattei To: kommening(a)lists.commons-institut.org, commoning(a)lists.commons-institut.org, commons-theorie(a)commons-institut.org Dear members of the Commons-Institut mailing lists (sorry for x-posting) I would like to inform you about an *academic workshop* that I am organizing at the University of Zürich in November 2016 on *“The Law of the Commons” with Prof. Ugo Mattei*. You can find more information on the workshop below, in the attachment or on this website <http://www.philosophie.uzh.ch/de/doktorat/zdw/lawcommons.html>. Because I am new to the Commons-Institut group, I was asked to shortly introduce myself. So here I go: I am momentarily writing a dissertation in political philosophy on the topic “Markets, Democracy and the Commons” at the University of Zurich. One central aim of the thesis is to analyze whether the concept of the commons actually fulfills the postulate that they can overcome or countervail the inequalities and ecological destruction brought about by capitalist economies. Besides analyzing the concept of the commons, I argue, on the one hand, that in order to deal with (and transform) these problematic and complex market mechanisms, one must further the commons approach with concepts of economic democracy, social and solidarity economy and alternative modes of finance, possibly understanding the market also as a commons. On the other hand, I argue that the state is required to support and ensure (commons) property rights, yet must be democratized through diverse forms of participation and co-production on diverse scales, also possibly conceptualizing the state as a commons. Besides working on my dissertation, I am active in a few “prosumer” cooperatives mostly revolving around food and farming, including comedor <http://foodcoop-comedor.ch>, ortoloco <http://www.ortoloco.ch> and especially the dairy co-op basimilch <http://basimil.ch>. Finally, I have two children who are 3,5 and 1 year(s) old. Well I think that’s enough about me. Please feel free to forward the call for papers to everyone you know, who might be interested in the workshop (maybe without my personal, biographical note, however). It would be great to meet some of you at the workshop! All the best, Lukas ******************************************************************** Call for Papers: *Workshop “The Law of the Commons”* *With Prof. Ugo Mattei *(University of California, Hastings College of the Law) Where: University of Zurich, Switzerland When: 24th November 2016 In the workshop we will discuss the work of Ugo Mattei, with a focus on his newest book *The Ecology of Law: Towards a Legal System in Tune with Nature and Community*(2015). The workshop will also provide doctoral students with the opportunity to present and discuss their work on the commons from diverse perspectives, yet with a focus on political and legal philosophy. A more detailed description of the workshop can be found here: http://www.philosophie.uzh.ch/de/doktorat/zdw/lawcommons.html Abstracts of 300 to 500 words should be submitted to lukas.peter(a)uzh.ch by the 15th of September 2016. Accepted participants will be notified by the 30 th of September 2016. There is no participation fee. A few travel bursaries for Swiss graduate students are available. If you wish to be considered please submit a travel budget in addition to your abstract. The workshop is sponsored by the Swiss National Science Foundation and supported by DemocracyNet.eu and NCCR Democracy.
