Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Adoption of three texts on personal data: teach yourself how to be safe!

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Fri, Apr 15, 2016 at 12:56 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Adoption of three texts on personal data: teach yourself how to be safe! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Press Release *Tags : *DATAPROTECTION - PNR - EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT - BERNARD CAZENEUVE - DATA REGULATION La Quadrature du Net — For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/data-protection-three-texts-adopted Adoption of three texts on personal data: teach yourself how to be safe! Paris, 14 April 2016 — *Today, the European Parliament adopted three texts on personal data: the regulation framework for personal data processing by private companies, the Directive on judicial and police processing of personal data, and the PNR (Passenger Name Record) that aims at the creation of national records gathering large amounts of data of persons travelling from or to the European Union, including internal flights. These texts feature numerous loopholes that threaten the right to privacy. Given the inability of the institutions to come up with regulations that actually protect Internet users, it is up to each and every one of us to learn how to protect themselves, their personal data and their privacy on the Internet.* The first of the three texts in the General Data Protection Regulation <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=582&…> (analysis in French), a regulation on personal data protection. This regulation will provide a framework for the usage of personal data by private companies. Even though it does feature a number of improvements upon the present situation, this regulation will not provide full protection of individuals against abuses of access to this data by companies or Member States, as we have been warning <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=583&…> about for numerous months. The second is the Directive <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=584&…> that comes with the Regulation. It determines usage of personal data by police services and judicial services in the Member States. The Directive has comparably not been given lots of attention, given how important the negotiation of the Regulation was. Nevertheless, its reach is extremely vast 1 <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=585&…>, which begs the question of institutional surveillance by the States. We worry about the checks and balances of the various national transpositions of this Directive, which will be difficult at the European scale, and virtually impossible worldwide2 <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=586&…> ). The third text adopted is the Directive <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=587&…> on the usage of data from passenger records for the prevention and detection of terrorist infractions and serious crime, as well as for investigations and lawsuits on these matters, also known as PNR. Each Member State will have to establish a record of all passenger data for flights to or from the European Union, as well as within the EU. However, the Directive does not sufficiently specify the rules for access to these records, as well as modalities for exchange of information between EU States. Mere statements of attachment to fundamental rights might thus prove insufficient. France pressuring for the text to be voted as an instrument for the fight against terrorism is a distraction from the severe imperfections it carries, not only with respect to citizens' protections but also, ironically, in terms of effectiveness of surveillance of suspected individuals. *"These three texts voted today by the European Parliament after long and sometimes rough negotiations do not sufficiently protect personal data and fundamental rights. It is of the utmost urgency to learn and regain control of one's own data. Publicity blockers, cookie erasers, encryption and Tor usage are the instruments to regain some degree of privacy on the Internet. There are tools to help each and every one protect their private life, such as the website Contrôle tes données <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=588&…>. La Quadrature du Net urges all of us to start securing and appropriating themselves their personal data as a fundamental step to protect our right to privacy, to free expression and to information.* - 1. <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=589&…> Notably covering demonstrations, sport events and riots, considering 11 (bis). - 2. <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=590&…> Analysis <http://www.laquadrature.net/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=591&…> soon to be published About La Quadrature du Net La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. Re: [P2P-F] Subject:, Fwd: [commoning] Open Call for Pixelache Helsinki 2016 Festival – Interfaces for Empathy – 22-25.9.2016

Looking this over, it occurred to me that this might be a suitable venue for a project I've been wanting to do for a while but which life has been getting in the way of lately; the demonstration of 'compound living' with the use of CNC based microyurts. Compound living is where a home is based on a cluster of small shelters in the open. Instead of creating a large building divided into many rooms, you use closely spaced small buildings, each independently heated and powered, designed to host the functions of one or two rooms, and optionally linked by decking and outdoor lounge areas. In this way one facilitates the use of much smaller structures with much lower impact on the land and which are easier for the individual owner-builder to construct and deploy. It's a concept I once briefly discussed with Pierre Koenig shortly before his death; he working on a very high-end Modernist expression of the concept at the time and I exploring the possibility of repurposing prefab structures like small car shelters as a low-cost owner-built solution for the low-toxic housing crisis. (I got his attention because, apparently, I was among the first and last people to ever contact him by email) Currently, I feature a compound home concept as one of the possible housing designs for the Open House documentary project--a project to showcase Post-Industrial culture through the demonstration of the owner-built construction of a home and lifestyle based entirely on Open Source designs and personal digital fabrication. What is interesting with compound living in this festival's context is the way it merges the home with the immediate natural surroundings. Little to no landscape modification would be used, the microshelters set in the found space nature provides using small pier foundations. The open natural environment--let's say, a forest--becomes one's home and the small structures rooms within that home with the flora and fauna of the local environment free to intersperse the living environment. And so this presents a very different relationship between nature and the built habitat with unique lifestyle aspects. (for better and worse in some aspects--you might have a bit of a problem in locations with rougher climate or a lot of dangerous fauna...) There is a potential here for the cultivation of a greater empathy for the natural habitat and more direct awareness of human impact on it. You are making a home in nature the way a family of racoons might inhabit a hollow tree, yet it's not 'camping' or 'roughing it' in any way as one is employing the best technology has to offer for a safe and comfortable living within, rather than apart from, nature. This notion might suit this festival theme well. But building a permanent compound home would be beyond the scope of a festival exhibition and so I consider a more nomadic approach based on the use of several 'microyurts' that is still clearly above the level of camping. A microyurt is a simple shelter that employs the structural concept of the traditional yurt--the rigidized insulated tent--but at smaller size with more contemporary materials, assembly, and design, such as the use of a CNC cut skeleton frame made of EcoBoard with puzzle-fit assembly. I've been planning to develop a set of these based on the calabash gourd shape which has been featured in a lot of furniture design lately. Simply imagine this at a human scale; http://kitticraft.com/shop/cat-beds-and-swings/calabash/#product_images[gro… This shape is interesting for its organic character, it's relation to native pottery shapes which could inspire its surface decoration, the way that it provides a fully contained form supporting a sheltered raised floor, and the fact that it would perfectly accommodate the mounting of a small vertical axis wind turbine or radial solar panel array on its top to power LED lighting, small electric heating, mobile device charging, and cluster WiFi. And with a gridded structure as demonstrated by the above cat bed, there is much potential for integral appliances and shelving. Depending mostly on the difficulty in crafting the exterior fabric shell, developing a set of these with specialized interior design variations for a portable compound could be possible within the time before the festival date. Is it possible that support for such a project could be found? Fwd: A report from the DC Cemocracy Spring Demonstrations That the Media Is Ignoring

If we could get 1000 people willing to risk arrest for a protest of this sad state of affairs, then let's do it! We got well over 1000 within 2 weeks, and 3000, ultimately. I arrived at the required preparatory meeting (for people intending to risk arrest) a few minutes early, and there was a group of about 30 people on the street waiting for the doors to open. Many had participated in the march from Philadelphia with a crowd that, reportedly, started at about 150. The crowd had grown and shrunk along the way, swelling to about 250 on the last day. There was great praise for the logistics: sometimes there was enough money to put everyone up at a motel, other times on church floors. The food was far better than expected - at least as good as at home. Marchers were joined by hundreds of others who arrived to participate in the protests at the Capitol this week, and the time of action at the Capitol would start the next day. Chatting with people waiting to enter the preparatory meeting, I met some from Washington (state), North Carolina, Michigan, New York, California, and Florida, converging here to be arrested for the sake of promoting a change from the existing plutocracy to the representative democracy that our constitution defines. I'd be surprised if any state was not represented. The attendance at this meeting was over capacity, so after about the first ~200, people had to be turned away for another meeting that was hastily set up. Other meetings would run twice daily for those who arrived later in the week. Presentations, discussions, and activities covered the history and effectiveness of civil disobedience, body language and tactics for dealing with the police, the legal implications and consequences of the coming action, and connection with each other, sharing why we had (individually) come. I was choking back tears a lot of the time, just over the inspiration of seeing so many who care about the miserable state of affairs in which we find ourselves - that big money donors have continued to increase their power in government at the expense of the vast majority of citizens. Bribery of our representatives has been legalized and given pretty names. Lobbyist. Contribution. And individual, caring citizens had come together to do something, when doing nothing about it has become personally intolerable. That night, I prepared my sign, "DISGUSTED INTO ACTION", got a little sleep, and, at11AM, joined hundreds of other protestors getting ready to march to the Capitol building. We heard from several inspiring speakers who stoked our hope, pride, and sense of purpose, as the crowd swelled to about a thousand. And then we took over the street, marching toward the Capitol steps. I was asked, by an observer on the sidewalk, whom we were supporting, so I stopped to explain what we were about. The idea - that money has undue influence in legislation - is nearly always met with understanding and agreement. (I think I recruited my waitress at breakfast that morning to join the protest.) We arrived, sat down, continued our chants and songs, and were advised that we had received our final warning from the police. Those not wishing to "risk arrest" backed off toward the sidewalk, as over 400 of us remained. We continued our chants and positive demeanor as busload after busload of us were taken away. The police had started out individually escorting protestors to be cuffed, frisked, and taken to a bus, but after awhile, as they saw how peaceful and cooperative we were, they would just approach the crowd and say, "OK, we need ten more," and people would stand up and present their wrists. It was announced that we were the largest mass arrest ever at the US Capitol. Yet, where were the corporate media? This action was not in their interest. But I just saw Jim Hightower's email about it. His organization, along with 120 others (including Network of Spiritual Progressives) are endorsers. Democracy Now covered the story on Tuesday. This went on from about 1 to 3PM, until Lieutenant Leonard advised us that we could sit there awhile longer since there was no more room for us at the two precincts where we were being taken. Arrests resumed after about 45 minutes. We were taken by a bus that would have seemed extremely comfortable if not for the fact that our hands were bound behind our backs. After a 10 minute drive, we were let off into an improvised corral outside a police station. As space became available, we were led in and processed. They just took some information and IDs - no fingerprinting, no jail cells. I told the officer, "this is my first time; be gentle with me" and he laughed. Then, after about 5 hours of processing time, they let people go with a citation to appear at the central station and pay $50. During this wait, it was pretty uncomfortable wearing the zip ties around my wrists. The police accommodated requests to have them replaced with looser ones if tightness was a complaint, and to put them on with hands in front if shoulders were hurting, which I finally asked for. All those hours of waiting - I got out at 9:30PM - became trying for many, according to the remarks going around the room (I counted 200 people seated and about another 20 standing). In spite of my hunger, I felt a lot of patience, having become a soldier in a great, peaceful army fighting on behalf of the 99.9%. When I finally stepped out onto the street, I was greeted by about 15 supporters, high-fiving me and thanking me for taking this stand. They had food and drink, and led us to bathrooms nearby. What a bunch of mensches - all of us there. Reflections on Yanis Varoufakis' New Book. tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique 14 (1): 243-247. http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/758/816 This article reviews Yanis Varoufakis’ (2016) new book “And the Weak Suffer what They Must? Europe, Austerity and the Threat to Global Stability”? It argues that the question “When will the creditors get ‘their money’ back from Greece?” must be dialectically reversed: When will Greece get its money back from Germany? When will Germany pay its Nazi debts to Greece? _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Fed on too-big-to-fail

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Shann Turnbull <sturnbull(a)mba1963.hbs.edu> Date: Tue, Apr 5, 2016 at 6:52 PM Subject: Re: Fed on too-big-to-fail To: M Mellor <m.mellor(a)northumbria.ac.uk> Dear All Monetary reformers may be interested in my proposal for member States of the EU to issue digital negative interest rate Terminating Euros to regain their monetary sovereignty as set out in my paper presented in Athens on June 15 last year. It would be “debt free positive helicopter money” redeemed by the negative interest rate in say one year as occurred with Stamp Scrip during the Great Depression. I suggest that the EU, ECB and IMF, who make up the “Troika”, should encourage member States to undertake trials issuing debit cards that can be topped up weekly through the internet that could also receive the negative interest payments for redeeming the money. The Athens Institute for Education and Research has published myJune 15 paper on “Terminating Currency Options for Distressed Economies” at: http://www.atiner.gr/papers/POL2015-1818.pdf Because terminating money would circulate much faster I described it a “Speed” Euros. Speed Euros could contribute to creating a universal basic income. It would remove the need for QE. It would represent QE for voters instead of QE for bankers or for the institutions that Corbyn describes as “Citizens”. I will be raising the above ideas in a panel discussion I have organised at a European Finance Management Association conference at Basle University on June 30 and at the Heterodox Economic conference in Glasgow July 7-9. Dr. Philip Moutot, a senior advisor of the ECB has agreed to chair our Basle discussion on the future of digital money. The other speakers are Chris Giles, the Economics Editor of the FT, Dr David Kumhof from the Bank of England and Dr Paola Tasca from University College London. I have posted more details at: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BDbyId-Pnlw1D-RMeG6VENCEJ-ymunm4xGr2I09… The other paper I presented in Greece last year in Thessaloniki on June 2 is forthcoming as a book chapter: ‘Stimulating business and economies with negative interest rate money: Enabling Euro Zone Nations like Greece to regain monetary sovereignty’, in Beate Sjåfjell, Georgina Tsagas and Charlotte Villiers (eds), *Sustainable Value Creation under EU Law:* *Transdisciplinary perspectives on the EU social market economy, *Chapter 9, Cambridge University Press: UK.
