Fwd: [bgcon] Tacit Futures: Re-Imagination | May 3 in Berlin
by Michel Bauwens 26 Apr '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Tue, Apr 26, 2016 at 4:05 PM Subject: [bgcon] Tacit Futures: Re-Imagination | May 3 in Berlin To: digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de Hi, all crisis phenomena have a common denominator: they reveal a general deficit of imagination. The present is being endured to the same degree as the future seems inconceivable. What will happen tomorrow with social security, education, affluence or culture? Some people bury their head in the sand of the present moment, others compensate for the missing vision with fear and aggression. Angela Merkel's “we'll make it” doesn't help much. It mostly means: if you can't prevent something from happening, then just pretend you're steering it. There are good reasons to be wary of big plans. In the past, the ones which didn't fail made things even worse. On the other hand uncontrolled developments usually strengthen the rule of the stronger. So how can we re-imagine the future? The Canadian thinker and activist Max Haiven has written several books on this question, among others Crises of Imagination, Crises of Power: Capitalism, Creativity and the Commons (Zed books, 2014). Now, he opens his rich tool box to focus on the movement of people, data and goods – a traffic that will not continue without control. Borders and infrastructure are the central sites for this control of movement, and therefore also crucial sites for the production of futures. How is it possible to achieve democratic oversight of borders and infrastructure? Which imperatives are required to reimagine and rebuild these sites accordingly? He explores this in cooperation with TACIT FUTURES, the 2016 programme of the Berliner Gazette. Fwd: Cooperative Economics Alliance of New York (CEANYC): We're Launched
by Michel Bauwens 26 Apr '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Clifford Rosenthal <cliffcdcu1(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Apr 26, 2016 at 5:07 AM Subject: Cooperative Economics Alliance of New York (CEANYC): We're Launched Several of you, especially John and Pat, have expressed interested in the progress of our effort to develop and expand a multi-sectoral cooperative initiative in New York City. I'm happy to report that we had a very successful annual meeting and launch on April 18 at the Community Resource Exchange in Manhattan. Some 40 people attended, representing food, housing, credit, worker, and other cooperatives and community-based social justice organizations. Especially exciting was the diversity -- ethnically, racially, generationally. We elected a five-person board of directors -- labor and community organizers, African American women's collective, food co-op member, worker co-op representative, folks who have jointly worked to get us to this point. Cheyenna Weber who has been the driving force in getting us to this point deserves mountains of credit for her years of devoted, largely unpaid labor in bringing the vision of CEANYC to this reality. We are encouraged by the possibilities before us, and the energy we see and feel. As someone who has spent more than forty years in the cooperative movement, I cannot begin to tell you how gratifying it is to see the torch being passed. Fwd: Dear Future US President,
by Michel Bauwens 25 Apr '16

25 Apr '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bob Reuschlein <bobreuschlein(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, Apr 24, 2016 at 2:34 AM Subject: Dear Future US President, To: Link to send or tweet to others: *https://bobreuschlein.wordpress.com/2016/04/23/dear-future-us-president/ <https://bobreuschlein.wordpress.com/2016/04/23/dear-future-us-president/>* Dear Future US President, by Professor Robert Reuschlein America has signed and ratified the law against war and even the threat of war, the Kellogg-Briand Treaty of 1928. To bring America into compliance with the treaty would have significant economic benefits to the nation as well as extremely positive worldwide implications. The Treaty is the supreme law of the land, according to the US Constitution. You may not have been asked about the Treaty as part of the process that has gotten you the Presidency. However, this should not dull the importance of the Treaty for you and the nation as a whole. The lack of attention to the Treaty reflects a kind of historical amnesia, one which this letter and many other efforts, we hope, will end. Perhaps you are unaware of the op-ed of Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz in the British paper *The Guardian* on January 22, 2003. He was, of course, President Bill Clinton’s chief economic advisor in the nineties. In this op-ed titled “The Myth of the War Economy,” Stiglitz says “War is widely thought to be linked to economic good times… Today, we know that this is nonsense. The 1990s boom showed that peace is economically far better than war. The Gulf war of 1991 demonstrated that wars can actually be bad for an economy. That conflict contributed mightily to the onset of the recession of 1991 (which was probably the key factor in denying the first President Bush re-election in 1992).” In fact, redirecting the capital rich military economy between 1985 and 1999 and allowing those potent economic resources to be applied to the manufacturing economy instead lead to unprecedented prosperity in the post Cold War 1990s. Further proof of this critical choice between the manufacturing sector and the military sector is the fact that manufacturing increased in the late nineties despite various trade deals that are sometimes presented as putting the US at a disadvantage. Manufacturing will indeed boom if given the resources normally devoted to a nonproductive military economy, and the US can compete with other nations if it refrains from military buildups and active conflicts. Evidence for the proposition that military spending hurts the economy has only mounted since 2003, as the 2.8 million manufacturing jobs lost in the twenty-four months after 9-11 are coupled with the military buildup and jobs lost through shifts in trade. 1.7 million jobs were lost to the military buildup and one million jobs to trade (as was often discussed in the 2004 US election). A steady rise in unemployment leading up to the Great Recession began after the Iraq “surge” troops began to be deployed in July 2007. The unequal real estate boom from the military buildup fooled many parts of the nation into expecting the economy to continue upward. When it did not, the drain from the $70 billion “surge” apparently pushed the fragile mortgage economy into a severe decline. This pattern is similar to the 1980s with the military buildup transferring moneys from the productive economy to the unproductive economy, distorting the local real estate market until the Savings & Loan (S&L) bailout was the result. The murder rate is also linked with military spending. Although no criminologists can explain the drop in crime in the nineties, military spending and murder rates strongly correlate among the youngest five members of the G7, America, Japan, Germany, Canada, and Italy. The Cold War peace dividend benefited the nineties economy and crime. It is becoming more evident through the decades that the economic stagnation caused by high levels of military spending leads to the collapse of empires and the related social decay. Another benefit is that lower military spending improves the national strength over time, as military spending can actually increase faster as a small percentage of a fast growing economy. Tailoring the military can make it more nimble than ever and less encumbered with obsolete heavy forces; it can also improve America’s image in the world. Let more regional forces deal with the world’s ground military problems and primarily provide technical backup. With decreases in military spending, America will become more closely compliant with the lofty goals of the Kellogg Briand Pact of 1928. The Pact may have been wrought in a previous century, but it provides guidance that reaches far into the future. As you face the future as the President of the United States (from whatever party or background you hail), considering the Pact as a guiding principle alerts the world that the US is deeply committed to its own economic wellbeing along with larger global peace and justice issues. It may seem that following the Treaty is an act of altruism. However, the Treaty’s direction would lead the US into a more prosperous and productive-- as well as peaceful-- future. Dear Peter, I have not read this text. Only the title and your comment. But we can see, that you're not rooted in reality. The base for our existence is the nature. And with our work we transform some materials, that we can use it. A life without work is only possible for rubbers. The elits, the rulers, the parasits. This are the dominant ruling forces in our history and today. But we can go another way: 1) we dissolve all parasitic structures and infrastructures. With that we can reduce the quantity for working time to nearly 10 %. 2) All people, based on her health condition, are part in this working area. Parallel to the other things. With that we can reduce the individual necessary working time. 3) we use the time for our exchange equivalent. We can take, what we give or we have to give, what we take. This is easy, because only our time is that, what we bring in the economy (i don´t speak about the distribution system). 4) "global thinking, local doing" and "knowledge is always world heritage". This two principle, the base for our global cooperation, help us to extend our understanding of the law of the nature and her materialisation, the technology. If we follow this, we have a stable life environment and many time for all. many greetings, willi St. Elena de Uairen, Venezuela Am 24.04.2016 um 02:52 schrieb Peter Waterman: > Maybe I posted this already but Sunday April 24, 2016, I heard co-author Nick Srnicek discussing it with a couple of BBC guest commentators on BBC World Service. > > Is this wauw or what? (P2P) When did the internet-based 3rd industrial revolution really start ?
by willi uebelherr 23 Apr '16

23 Apr '16

Dear friends, in this text from Michel Bauwens we can see, that he don´t understand, what is the Internet. And the question to "3rd industrial revolution"? It is a big and cheap propaganda. Internet The INTER-connection of local NET-works. Or "Net of NETS". The problem is, that today in the telecommunication exist no net. We find only bus and star topologies. The net is a well defined geometrical structure. We know it from woven fabrics, from the spider nets, from hammocks, from fisher nets. A recursive geometrical structure, where every node is connected to his neighbors. But this structure you will never find in the telecommunication. And also not in the many "community networks". Therefore a "internet-based 3rd industrial revolution" don´t exist because no Internet exist. Industrial revolution What should be this? The dissolve of any form of blocking for centralized fabrication and his necessary infrastructure. This means, the actors need his open space for acting in this direction. And this was firstly focused to the feudalistic structure. But today we have the same. And 1rd, 2rd, 3rd ...? It is nonsense. Our perspective "Global thinking, local doing" and "knowledge is always world heritage". For this we need our telecommunication for our communication over geographical and time distances. We give our telecommunication the form of Internet, the inter-connection of local net-works. A transportsystem for digital data in packet form. It is simple to realize in an open space of free cooperation worldwide. The most important step, and the first, is to break our dogmatic. Application layer like Browser In principle, first we act for our telecommunication on the physical layer, the connection layer, the transport layer for digital data in packet form. Over this layer we have the application layer, the interpretation layer. You can use any name. You act on this layer on the data, the second part in the IP packets. In the transport layer, we act only on the header in the IP packets. The information for transport. The data is a closed box. On the application layer, you can do, what you want. You can use standardized protocols (languages) or not. You are free to design your communication with your partners on the other side. many greetings, willi St. Elena de Uairen, Venezuela -------- Weitergeleitete Nachricht -------- Betreff: [New post] When did the internet-based 3rd industrial revolution really start ? I believe it makes sense to divide the network era into an era in which computers were either unconnected, or only connected by the elite, which used it to create the basis of the neoliberal re-organization of our global economic system. However, if we take a non-technocratic view, we could argue that the capabilities of universal interconnectedness and global cooperation had their cultural roots in the great cultural revolution that took place in 1968, and the birth of post-capitalist values in the cultural sphere. Why does this matter? Because some historians, like Elisabeth Eisenstein in her history of the effects of the printing press on European society, argue that it takes four generations for such a full societal change to play out. So it matters when we begin counting! Kevin Kelly's hypothesis however, which is focused on the full technical capability to interconnect all things, starts his calculation more or less in 1996, the date of birth of the commercial internet, while I would place it at the birth of the civic internet. Here ( http://kk.org/thetechnium/the-post-produc/ ) is what he writes: "If digital innovations, millions of apps, the vast social networks that are being woven are increasing our living standards where is the evidence in the GDP? I think the key sentence in (Robert) Gordon’s paper is this: “Both the first two revolutions required about 100 years for their full effects to percolate through the economy.” Repeat: it took a century for the full benefits of the innovations to show up. By my calculation we are into year 20 of this 3rd upheaval. Gordon wants to start the clock on the 3rd Industrial Revolution in 1960 at the start of commercial computers. That’s an arbitrary starting point; I would arbitrarily start it at the dawn of the commercial internet because I don’t think unconnected computers by themselves are revolutionary. Unconnected computers did not change much. Standalone personal computers hardly changed our lives at all. They sped up typing, altered publishing, and changed spreadsheet modeling forever, but these were minor blips in the economy and well-being of most people. Big mainframe computers helped the largest corporations manage financial assets or logistics, but a number of studies have shown that they did not elevate much growth. Everything changed, however, when computers married the telephone. This is when ordinary people noticed computers. They could get online. Everything went online. Retail changed, production changed, occupations changed. This communication revolution accelerated change elsewhere. Processes and gizmos got smarter because they were connected. Now the advantages of personal computers made sense because in fact they were just local terminals in something bigger: the network. As the Sun Computer company famously put it: the network is the computer. So the 3rd Industrial Revolution is not really computers and the internet, it is the networking of everything. And in that regime we are just at the beginning of the beginning. We have only begun to connect everything to everything and to make little network minds everywhere. It may take another 80 years for the full affect of this revolution to be revealed. In the year 2095 when economic grad students are asked to review this paper of Robert Gordon and write about why he was wrong back in 2012, they will say things like “Gordon missed the impact from the real inventions of this revolution: big data, ubiquitous mobile, quantified self, cheap AI, and personal work robots. All of these were far more consequential than stand alone computation, and yet all of them were embryonic and visible when he wrote his paper. He was looking backwards instead of forward.” Photo ( http://wpinject.com/ ) by http://www.flickr.com/photos/58748148@N08/6911032554 Add a comment to this post: https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/internet-based-3rd-industrial-revolution-rea… -- Manage Subscriptions https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?key=a5cfae032cc8ec91c4f0b9e91fb0f489&email… Unsubscribe: https://subscribe.wordpress.com/?key=a5cfae032cc8ec91c4f0b9e91fb0f489&email…
