---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tikkun Magazine <magazine(a)tikkun.org> Date: Wed, Dec 14, 2016 at 8:17 AM Subject: Michel, I noticed you didn't open my last note to you--please open this one with our strategy for the Trump years ahead. To: Michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [image: Tikkun Banner] Dear Michel, I promise if you read this letter through to the end you'll hear the outlines of an analysis that you'll never get in the mainstream media--and a strategy you won't hear from most people in the liberal or progressive world whose focus on resisting Trump is valuable, but not deep enough to keep the society from moving further to the right in the Trump years. But first let me share with you some more personal feelings. Watching the appointments being made by Trump to lead his administration, I'm in double mourning. First for the earth and all the human beings who are going to be deeply hurt by the policies these people and Trump himself pursue, probably the most right wing extremist-filled government we've had in the past hundred years, determined to dismantle programs for those most in need, bring back a vicious form of "law and order," weaken efforts to protect women's rights and efforts to undue racism, demonize Muslims, and destroy programs that seek to slow down the environmental crisis. Second I'm mourning for the failure of supposedly liberal Democrats when they get into office to actually fight for what they say they believe in, typically appointing to their administration's highest positions people who are centrist and some who are holdovers from Republican administration, presumably to show how "fair" they are trying to be to the people who didn't vote for them, but actually being unfair to thsoe who did vote for them. I can understand this about the appeal of people on the Right--they stand up for what they believe in and fight for it, not pretending that they are going to use their time in power to mollify those who don't agree with them. The bad news, of course, is that in so doing they have placed into power people with racist, homophobic and/or "serve the 1% and screw all the rest" proclivities that we have to resist. It’s important to celebrate each victory, so please remember that over two million more Americans voted for Hillary Clinton than voted for Donald Trump, and that had Democrats (after a similar popular vote victory for Vice President Al Gore in the 2000 election was similarly cancelled by the undemocratic mechanism of the Electoral College) begun the process of amending the Constitution to create direct democratic election of the President when they held the presidency and both houses of Congress in 2009, Hillary would have been President and her victory might have been described as “a landslide.” Even now, President Obama could be saying that Hillary won the popular vote, is actually real President of the U.S. that the majority chose, and should appoint a Shadow Cabinet so that they could from time to time present the policies that the majority would have gotten had this been a true democracy (thereby pushing the media to not allow only the voices of Trump's forces to dominate public discourse because they supposedly "won" the right to do so). But don't hold your breath, because the liberals are too often liberal about their liberalism, and that is one of the many reasons that people don't feel they can really trust them. *Tikkun magazine is needed now, and in the coming Trump years, more than ever*. And while our readers of our magazine and website share with millions of other Americans upset and fear about a presidential administration which already seems to be top-heavy with racists, sexists, anti-Semites and true reactionaries, and while we will fully support demonstrations like the Women’s March on Washington, D.C. scheduled for January 21st, the day after the Trump Inauguration, *Tikkun brings something that the Democrats and most of the liberal and progressive organizations don’t have: an actual strategy to make sure that these four years are not the prelude to a more general slide of the whole society in reactary directions. * But we can only be doing this work if YOU, Michel, can help us by making a tax-deductible contribution now. We really need your help. *Any donation would be deeply appreciated--$5 a month, $10 a month, whatever it is, it will help us greatly*. Go to www.tikkun.org/donate to see how easy it is to donate. For those who can afford more, we’ve received *a challenge grant* from a generous donor who will match any $1,000 donation (yes, all tax-deductible) with an equal amount if that happens before January 5, 2017. You don’t have to have that amount yourself—you can ask friends to donate and “bundle” their donation till you reach $1,000 or more, and then send that to us in checks or in a donation online at www.tikkun.org/donate <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Xc2XoUZsD3ebq8Xgrcr0ZqZ%2BxoLV…>. (If you sent this letter to your friends and put it on your Facebook or other social media, you might find that 20 of them are excited enough by our strategy below to give $50 each to Tikkun, and then you'd have the $1,000 to get matched--and if you only got 5 or 10 of them do send you their checks for Tikkun, you'd still have done a wonderful deed--we call it a 'mitzvah' in Hebrew). But whether or not you help us with that matching grant, please donate as much as you possibly can—and then maybe just stretch a little beyond that. More info at the end of this letter. *Now, lets talk strategy!!!* The strategy for the Trump years ahead is multi-dimensional and is presented in the Winter 2017 issue of Tikkun magazine (which you get by donating $50 or more to Tikkun, or by joining the Network of Spiritual Progressives <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=%2FoH78sGnCEt%2BuxNfV9HeWaZ%2B…> at the $50 level, or by subscribing directly to the magazine at www.tikkun.org/subscribe <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=waPY5goCmwP%2BbSspQLkD76Z%2Bxo…> ). What I can present in this letter is only one part of it. One dimension of that strategy is this: *the progressive forces need to split the Right, challenging the racists, sexists, homphobes, Islamophobes, antiSemites, and bullies on the one hand, while empathizing and speaking to the pain of the other section of the Trump constituency that was responding to real pain in their lives and who do not necessarily agree with the bullies, racists, sexists, etc. *These may only represent 30% of the Right, but they are enough to make a huge difference in national and state politics. As Tikkun has been saying since we started thirty years ago, based on the lessons I learned as principal investigator of an NIMH-sponsored research project in which my team uncovered central aspects of the psychodynamics of the lives of many Americans, the pain that makes them susceptible to Right-wing demagoguery has multiple sources: 1. The corrosive and destructive ethos of materialism and selfishness and "looking out for number one" fostered by the competitve marketplace and reinforced by the mainstream media, its sitcoms, its “reality t.v.” shows that made Trump famous, and the ongoing message that force, violence, and bullying is ok if you are doing for "the right cause" (hence all the shows about police triumphing over bad guys (often represented as people of color). This valuing of "looking out for number one" is a central factor in the breakdown of families, friendships and a sense of loneliness and alienation that is part of the daily experience of many Americans. 2, The major self-justification of massive inequality produced by the competitivet marketplace: the claim that we live in a meritocracy which rewards merit—internalized by many as self-blame if they haven’t made it economically or in their personal relationships, and uinintentionally reinforced by a pop-psychology and pop-spirituality which preaches "you make your own reality" as though there was no class structure, no wildly unequal distribution of wealth and power in this society 3. The demeaning way the Left deals with people who are not yet with us, assuming them to be stupid or evil--just read the way that message has pervaded Facebook and Twitter and the internet since Trump was elected, but it has been heard over and over again by many people who are not yet with us, and they feel shamed, humiliated, and then, angry at that message 4. The demenaing on the Left of religious or spiritual people which makes many Americans feel that the Left has contempt for them. And these points are just headlines—I could easily understand if you don’t agree with all this until you read the more nuanced presentation of these ideas in the 2017 issue of Tikkun. So here is another element Tikkun brings that the Left needs so badly: *a positive vision of the world we are for, not just what we are against!! You can read it at www.tikkun.org/covenant <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=gGT%2FPfZpBxggFM8xVLBdgqZ%2Bxo…>. * The important point is, Tikkun has a strategy that goes beyond the “resist” the Trump Administration’s worst acts, affirming a resistance strategy but going beyond to open the conversation about how to* build a broader liberal and progressive constituency which begins with how we change ourselves so that people feel us affirming rather than shaming and blaming them*! And doing that *without for a moment relaxing our struggle against racism, sexism, etc. * This is one of many reasons why it is so important to keep Tikkun going—and that, sadly enough, depends on your willingness to help us out with a tax-deductible donation. You can send a check to Tikkun, 2342 Shattuck Ave, #1200 , Berkeley, Ca. 94704. Your can pay by credit card either by going to www.tikkun.org/donate <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=Z8qrFaIOR0JePYPwqYVFVKZ%2BxoLV…> or by giivng your credit card info by calling our office between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Pacific Standard Time, Monday to Friday 510-644 1200. You can arrange a monthly donation plan at whatever level feels comfortable to you by speaking to Staci at that number!! You might also consider giving a subscription to Tikkun magazine as a holiday gift ($29 for the first gift and $18 for each subsequent gift). Send us your list of people and their home address where they would receive the print magazine and email address where they would receive an email from us notifying them of your generous and sophisticated gift—and tell us whether you prefer referencing this as a gift for Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, or simply “because they care about you.” Or simply buy subscriptions on line at www.tikkun.org/subscribe <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=udBvTa6SiKYXTtrtsbwqYaZ%2BxoLV…> (but then *you *have to tell them personally that the reason they are getting this gift is because you bought it for them). Meanwhile, many blessings to you for a wonderful holiday season ahead, and for a year in which social and economic justice, environmental sanity, kindness, generosity of spirit, an end to violence, racism, sexism, homophobia, Islasmophobia, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, and a triump of caring for each other and for everyone on the planet make a powerful comeback despite everything that works in the opposite direction!! And much love to you!! Michael Rabbi Michael Lerner Editor, Tikkun RabbiLerner.Tikkun(a)gmail.com P.S. *Please act now to give us the support Tikkun so badly needs!!!* And don’t forget the matching grant—if you can give or raise $1,000 by Jan. 5 it will be matched by our donor. But whatever you give will be deeply appreciated. Fwd: Civicist's First Post: The New Deal

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Civic Hall <info(a)civichall.org> Date: Tue, Dec 13, 2016 at 10:22 PM Subject: Civicist's First Post: The New Deal To: Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> December 13, 2016 <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> [image: First Post] <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> Micah L. Sifry *The New Deal* - "We need to see this for what it is. It is an attack on our very democracy. It’s an attack on who we are as a people. A foreign government messing around in our elections is, I think, an existential threat to our way of life. To me, and this is to me not an overstatement, this is the political equivalent of 9/11. It is huge and the fact that it hasn’t gotten more attention from the Obama Administration, Congress, and the mainstream media, is just shocking to me." Former acting CIA director *Michael Morrell*, who briefed President *George W. Bush* on 9/11, speaking <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> to the Cipher Brief about Russia's interference in the 2016 election. - "People of tech, now is the time to choose. The sidelines have vanished. Neutrality is not an option. You face a question not that different from the one *Steve Jobs* posed to a CEO long ago, when he asked, 'Do you want to sell sugar water for the rest of your life, or do you want to change the world?' Today the question is: Do you want to sell racism, sexism, oil, climate disaster, surveillance, fear, and hate? Or do you want to help save an endangered world? This is for real. This is now. There are no pivots or reboots. Which side are you on?" *Scott Rosenberg,* "When Tech Has to Choose Between Its President and Its Customers — Who Wins? <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> - Yesterday, Senator Majority Leader *Mitch McConnell* expressed support <http://civichall.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> for a bipartisan investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election, offering vocal support for the work of people in the Central Intelligence Agency: “I have the highest confidence in the intelligence community and especially the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA is filled with selfless patriots, many of whom anonymously risk their lives for the American people.” - One might think that McConnell had decided to side with saner heads in the CIA vs Trump, who trashed the agency this weekend. But one should never take McConnell's words at face value. When he says that the Senate Intelligence Committee "is more than capable of conducting a complete review of this matter,” that should be understood as forestalling any more far-ranging investigative effort, as *Austin Wright* explains <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> in Politico. - A group of ten presidential electors, mostly Democrats led by *Christine Pelosi* of California (daughter of House minority leader Rep. *Nancy Pelosi*), have written <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> to the director of national intelligence *James Clapper* asking for a briefing into "whether there are ongoing investigations into ties between *Donald Trump*, his campaign or associates, and Russian government interference in the election, the scope of those investigations, how far those investigations may have reached, and who was involved in those investigations." - Trump's decision to postpone <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> a planned December 15 press conference on how he was supposedly divesting himself of his businesses means that the Electoral College will vote December 19th without knowing all the ways that he will likely be in violation of the Constitution's Emoluments Clause when he takes office, as *Norman Eisen and Richard Painter,* respectively the ethics counsels for Presidents Obama and Bush, explain <http://civichall.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> in The Atlantic. - Notably, Trump's view of the Constitutional prohibition on receiving foreign gifts or payments while in office is this <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…>: "Even though I am not mandated by law to do so, I will be leaving my businesses before January 20th so that I can focus on my presidency. Two of my children, Don and Eric, plus executives, will manage them. No new deals will be done during my term(s) in office." - Channeling her inner Donald voice, Recode's *Kara Swisher* writes <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> that "the leaders of tech should be ashamed of themselves for lining up like sheeple after all the numskull attacks Trump has made on what is pretty much the United States’ most important, innovative and future-forward business sector." She shares a bit of her background conversations with a tech leader about tomorrow's "summit": Like one tech leader who suddenly stopped mid-sentence about how to really make deals, Kara, because the truth just had to be out. “Trump is just awful, isn’t he? It makes me sick to my stomach,” the leader agonized, as a real thinking person would. “What are we going to do?” Well, to start, realize again that you have the smarts and invention and the innovative spirit to do whatever you like. Realize you have untold money and power and influence and massive platforms to do what you think is right. Realize that you are inventing the frigging future. Instead, you’re opting to sit in that gilded room at Trump Tower to be told fake news is a matter of opinion and that smart people aren’t so smart and that you need to sit still and do what they say and take that giant pile of repatriated income with a smile. Or you can say no — loudly and in public. - Tech investor *Chris Sacca*, who wasn't invited and isn't attending, didn't mince words to Swisher: "It's funny, in every tech deal I've ever done, the photo op comes after you've signed the papers,” he said. “If Trump publicly commits to embrace science, stops threatening censorship of the internet, rejects fake news and denounces hate against our diverse employees, only then it would make sense for tech leaders to visit Trump Tower.” He added: “Short of that, they are being used to legitimize a fascist." - *Dave Pell *of NextDraft (an excellent newsletter) offers a word of sympathy <http://civichall.us9.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> for the tech execs meeting with Trump: "they feel they have a responsibility to maintain shareholder value," and the president-elect has shown that he will punish companies that don't heed his wishes. - Related: Net neutrality will soon be on the chopping block, as *April Glaser *explains <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> in Recode. - And Wharton professor and longtime FCC hand *Kevin Werbach* explains <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> exactly how Congress will wield the axe. - Civil rights groups led by Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM) and MoveOn are delivered <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> 200,000 petition signatures to the Justice Department yesterday asking President Obama to cancel the National Security Entry-Exit Registration System (NSEERS), which was created after 9/11 to register foreigners from mostly Muslim countries. The program has been shelved since 2011, but the groups want it ended before Trump takes office to make it harder for him to re-activate it. - Author *Amy Webb* writes <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> in Politico that the government needs a "Department of the Future." She wants it to "be charged not only with futures research and advising, but also with educating our newly elected leaders, the vast majority of whom do not have any background in science or technology. More than almost any president before him, Trump is in need of such an education." File this under Nice Idea In Some Other Universe. - *This is civic tech*: Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and a longtime friend (and benefactor) of Civic Hall, has donated <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> $1 million to Poynter to fund a five-year chair in journalism ethics focused on verification, fact-checking and accountability in journalism. Kudos Craig! - Twitter CEO *Jack Dorsey* (who isn't attending the Trump tech summit) will be streaming live <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> with *Edward Snowden* at 12:05pm ET tomorrow. - 1776 NYC is still accepting applications <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> for its first cohort of startup fellows, through December 16. - *What sharing economy? *Uber is indeed a sharing company—five former Uber security professionals tell *Will Evans* of the Center for Investigative Reporting <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> that even after it supposedly instituted strict policies preventing employees from accessing users' trip information "the company continues to allow broad access….Thousands of employees throughout the company, they said, could get details of where and when each customer travels. Those revelations could be especially relevant now that Uber has begun collecting location information even after a trip ends." Evans also reports that "internal Uber employees helped ex-boyfriends stalk their ex-girlfriends and searched for the trip information of celebrities such as Beyoncé, according to the company’s former forensic investigator." - Your moment of zen: Radio.garden <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…>, an interactive map of the Earth showing all the live radio streams available. <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> [image: Forward to a Friend] <http://us9.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d4&id=c8a…> ------------------------------ [image: Civic Hall] <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d…> *Copyright © 2016 Civic Hall, All rights reserved.* 156 Fifth Avenue, Second Floor, New York, NY 10010 unsubscribe <http://civichall.us9.list-manage1.com/unsubscribe?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> update subscription <http://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/profile?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d4&id…> You are receiving this email because you've subscribed to First Post -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Open Government in France: an Empty Promise?
by Michel Bauwens 09 Dec '16

dear stacco, perhaps worth republishing on the p2p blog ? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Sat, Dec 10, 2016 at 12:15 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Open Government in France: an Empty Promise? To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Press Release *Tags : OGP16, AXELLE LEMAIRE, BERNARD CAZENEUVE, OPENWASHING, FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION, OPEN DATA, FREE SOFTWARE, SURVEILLANCE* La Quadrature du Net — For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/Open-Government-France-an- Empty-Promise Open Government in France: an Empty Promise? Paris, 9 December 2016 — *As France is hosting the Open Government Partnership Global Summit, a number of Civil Society Organizations point out the inconsistencies of the French government. Some have decided not to attend.* The report on "open government" in France is co-signed by the following Civil Society Organizations (CSO): ANTICOR, April, BLOOM, DemocracyOS France, Fais ta loi, Framasoft, La Quadrature du Net, Ligue des Droits de l’Homme, Regards Citoyens, République citoyenne, SavoirsCom1. While showcasing a "dialogue with civil society", France is far from being an exemplary democracy Open government is a new way to collaborate between public actors and civil society, to find mutual answers to the important challenges democracies are facing: human rights, preservation of the environment, fighting corruption, universal access to knowledge, etc. To this end, seventy countries joined the Open Government Partnership (OGP). Each state is required to co-create and implement a "National Action Plan" together with civil society. France joined the Open Government Partnership in April 2014, and published its first National Action Plan in July 2015.Since October 2016 the French government co-chairs the OGP with WRI (World Resource Institute), a US-based civil society organization. As such, France will host the OGP Global Summit, in Paris, from December 7th to December 9th, 2016, announced as the "COP 21 for democracy". As the "Country of Human Rights", co-chair and host of the OGP Global Summit, France should be exemplary regarding open government. Unfortunately, actions do not match the promises, including in the three areas identified as "core priorities" by the French government itself (1. climate change and sustainable development ; 2. transparency, integrity and anti-corruption ; 3. building digital commons), despite the Government's self-satisfaction.Worse, some decisions, incompatible with democratic progress as promoted by the Open Government Partnership, are leading France on a dangerous path. The Civil Society Organizations who co-sign this statement, publish their critical analysis of Open Government in France and ask the French Government and Representatives to reevaluate some choices that are widely inconsistent with general interest and OGP's principles, and to finally bring coherence between speeches and actions. *Read the entire document <https://www.laquadrature.net/files/open%20government%20partnership%20empty%…>* *Signatories* - ANTICOR <http://www.anticor.org> is a non-profit organisation founded in 2002 by Eric Halpen and Severine Tessier to fight corruption and bring ethics back into politics. - April <http://www.april.org/> is the main French advocacy association devoted to promoting and protecting Free/Libre Software. very strongly recommend this essay summarizing where the world system is coming from , and where it is at now how would you place p2p/commons developments in the context of the failing world system and the 'world revolution of 1968', in the words of author immanuel wallerstein: http://www.eurozine.com/articles/2011-04-29-wallerstein-en.html -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
