The theme of the event was "The Future of Careers in Scholarship". The day kicked off with short talks by three invited speakers, but the bulk of the meeting followed an "unconference" format, where small-group discussions were organized around topics proposed by the attendees. Sonia Hall <https://twitter.com/SoniaHall> spoke about some of the current patterns in academic job opportunities, including statistics collected by the folks at the Future of Research <http://futureofresearch.org/>. Jessica Ehinger <http://www.realworldphds.com/> described patterns and lessons she has learned from her work with recent PhDs who are looking to pursue alternative career paths. Raquell Holmes <http://improvscience.org/Raquell> drew on her experience using improv to work with scientific groups to talk about how we can build the types of communities we want to be a part of. In the first round of group discussions, participants were encouraged to think about the challenges of pursuing scholarly careers in today's environment. Most of the discussions focused specifically on the challenges facing people working outside of the traditional academic system. While the various discussion groups were organized around different specific questions, the conversations converged, with each group identifying the same core set of needs. First, and most obviously, scholars need a degree of financial support to allow them the time to pursue their work. Second, scholars need access to intellectual resources: this includes things like access to library resources, but equally important is participation in an intellectual community, something that is easy to take for granted in a traditional academic career. In the second round of discussions, participants focused on brainstorming solutions, or at least strategies, to address some of the challenges identified in the first session. These discussions led to a number of different interesting suggestions of ways to enhance the connections among our community. We are already looking at how we can implement some of those ideas. The discussions were enthusiastic and vigorous, and we were thrilled with how the entire event played out. In fact, many of the participants were not ready to go home at the end of the day, and many of them were able to stick around afterwards for dinner and then drinks. We are assembling a more detailed report from the unconference, and that will be posted to the website, so keep an eye out for that. We were thrilled to have support from a number of generous sponsors, allowing us to keep the event affordable for participants. We wanted, once again, to thank them for helping us to make this event a reality. It is an attempt to reiterate the values upon which the Institute was founded and the expectations we should have for ourselves and each other. Greetings Ronin! On Tuesday, Donald Trump became the president-elect of the United States. We won’t understand all of the consequences of that for some time. However, it seems unlikely to mean anything good for scholarship. There is good reason to worry that there will be negative impacts on funding, and it is possible that certain types of research could come under more directed attack. For some of you, there may be more personal and immediate dangers – things lower down on the Maslow hierarchy than publication expenses. The Ronin Institute is a 501(c)3, meaning that we are specifically prohibited from lobbying for or against any candidate or piece of legislation, so we can’t, *as an institution*, take explicitly political positions. At the same time, we do have a certain set of values, values that are clearly at odds with much of the rhetoric and actions of the Trump campaign and its supporters. Given the way in which the violation of those values – and of many, many societal norms – has been mainstreamed and normalized in the media over the past several months, I think it is worth reiterating our commitment to our two cardinal values here. The first value is truth. This is the core value of all scholarship. It means being careful and thorough in your research, and it means being clear and honest in your communication. It also means being open to the possibility of being wrong, and it means working every day to be less wrong. As we move further into what seems to be a post-truth period in politics, it is more important than ever for us to commit ourselves to uncovering truths and sharing them with the world. The second value is empathy. That means treating each other with kindness and generosity, recognizing that other people may have goals and face challenges that are different from your own. And that entails a genuine commitment to diversity. No matter how much bigotry and harassment may become (further) normalized and (further) institutionalized in the coming months and years, they remain unacceptable here. And no, before you ask, valuing tolerance does not mean that we have to be tolerant of intolerance. If you think this sounds excessively naive or soft-headed or stereotypically liberal, this may not be the right community for you. I’m not saying you have to be perfect in execution every time with these things. But you do have to be striving towards them in good faith. Finally, I want to remind everyone that the Ronin Institute is a community, created specifically so that we can help each other to pursue our individual and collective goals. Normally, we think of this in the scholarly domain – exchanging intellectual ideas, or brainstorming solutions to problems like library access – but I want to encourage everyone to think also in the human domain. This election has brought an ugly part of our society out into the open, and for a lot of people, the country feels less safe than it did a few days ago. Unfortunately, given the incidents that have already occurred around the country, that feeling is probably accurate. The fact is that many people, particularly minority groups – both visible and invisible – are in a much more precarious position now. I know that many of you don’t know each other, but here’s the thing: I have had at least some interaction with each of you, and we have a fantastic group of folks here. I don’t know what kinds of support people are going to need in the coming weeks, months, and years, but I do know that we have a lot of people who will do what they can to provide that support. So, if there is something that you or others in your community need, please ask. If there is something you can provide, please offer. This, by the way, would be a great use of that Slack account you’ve been ignoring! We spoke at length about citizen participation, transparency, the Commons, a 60 million-euro participatory budget, the persistent misunderstanding that Podemos equals Ahora Madrid or Barcelona en Comú, how to bring “open source logics” to city governance, and the difficulties of institutional encroachment for those used to consensus-oriented assembly spaces. I think that this is very relevant material for the ECA, and an valuable resource for any commons-based electoral strategy that goes beyond pandering to existing party structures. Fwd: Here we are with Grassroots Economics - Kenya 2016

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Will Ruddick <willruddick(a)gmail.com> Date: Wed, Dec 21, 2016 at 2:49 PM Subject: Here we are with Grassroots Economics - Kenya 2016 To: will(a)grassrootseconomics.org Dear Friend of Grassroots Economics, Happy holidays! We're seeing the power of community currencies in developing thriving communities and prospering economies. This year has been exciting for Grassroots Economics Foundation and for Community Currencies in Kenya. With a largely volunteer staff, we've doubled our capacity to over 1000 small business users and 20 schools, and are trading over 100,000 EUR worth of community currency yearly in 5 networks across Kenya. We're seeing people able to accept 30% of their goods and services in Community Currency and equivalent increases to their sales in Kenyan Shillings. We've been honored by documentaries <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbRPKiR_R8g> (Please watch if you haven't already. 1st minute in Dutch then English), media & research <http://grassrootseconomics.org/media> and awards <http://grassrootseconomics.org/accolades-for-Sarafu-Credit-June>, this year, but failed to find the support needed to really grow as a non-profit foundation. We're seeking matching funds to fulfill a challenge grant from Stichting DOEN, for a June 2017 deadline, but have so far failed to reach our targets. If you are able to support us or can recommend personal connections (rather than general calls for proposals), please continue to push us toward sustainability. In order to reach sustainability we are considering, in early 2017, adopting a hybrid social-venture structure by creating Grassroots Economics Limited in order to generate revenue and investment needed to grow. GE Limited would focus on one of the key parts of the Foundation - developing and managing environmentally-sound import-replacing cooperative businesses in community currency networks. We've made headway, but there is a huge amount of work and support needed to get there! Here is our yearly report <https://www.dropbox.com/s/nhip9zsjf18i8ue/GE-2016-Report.pdf?dl=0> - we would really love to hear your advice as we move forward! Fwd: Common space for exchange: cities in transition and citizen struggles

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Stacco Troncoso <staccotroncoso(a)p2pfoundation.net> Date: Tue, Dec 20, 2016 at 6:33 PM Subject: Common space for exchange: cities in transition and citizen struggles To: commonswatch(a)lists.p2pfoundation.net Here's an article Ann Marie wrote on a recent event gathering some of the Spain-based civil society coalitions which won the local elections in most major cities and how it applies to the electoral landscape in France, the EU and beyond. I think you will find it relevant. If you like it, please share: http://commonstransition.org/common-space-for-exchange- cities-in-transition-and-citizen-struggles/ "But, what do the movements find when they ask the people what they want? The people are still outraged and anxious. They want assurances of security, to finally get out of the economic crisis. What happens when those who’ve moved to municipal government want rupture, but the people want restoration? The people say they want to "go back to the way things were", but not only is that impossible, things were not really so good - but memories are short. This is the key of the extreme right, this ideological message. What’s needed is more empathy." How has activism in Spain produced new political platforms that are victorious in municipal elections? Are there stories, lessons, methods or tools that can be shared or translated to other contexts? How might these support the growing movement in France? -- Strategic direction steward P2P Foundation <http://p2pfoundation.net/>. While attentive to the many consequential implications of this major shift in contemporary politics, we are equally engaged with this change as one of singular consequence, namely something symptomatic of a larger disruption in the mood of the times in which we all live. Our hope is that Consequence will have a real impact as well as provide a forum for rethinking the future and strategies of contemporary resistance. The first eight contributions to Consequence have been published at: www.ctheory.net. Richard Carlson "The Apprentice" William Bogard, "Rhythm of the Clicks" Kaplana R. Fwd: Mobile Banking Lifting Hundreds of Thousands from Poverty

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Sergio Lub <sergio(a)sergiolub.com> Date: Sat, Dec 17, 2016 at 3:49 PM Subject: Mobile Banking Lifting Hundreds of Thousands from Poverty To: Sergio Lub <sergio(a)sergiolub.com> Research Shows Mobile Banking Lifting Hundreds of Thousands from Poverty – (Fortune – December 10, 2016) <http://arlingtoninstitute.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=916d9ff25098a7…> http://fortune.com/2016/12/10/mobile-banking-poverty-research/ Economists at MIT and Georgetown have found that a service allowing users to send and receive money on their mobile phones has significantly reduced poverty in Kenya. According to long-term surveys, M-Pesa (short for “mobile money” in Swahili) helped 194,000 families, or 2% of Kenyan households, out of poverty between 2008 and 2014. Among other factors, the authors found that M-Pesa makes it easier to weather financial or health crises, both by increasing savings rates and allowing users to tap wider support networks. The effect was particularly pronounced for women and female-led households, which previous analysis has attributed to mobile banking’s tendency to give women more power in typically patriarchal societies. At the highest level, the study credits mobile banking with increasing the efficiency of the entire Kenyan economy, by helping users make more productive choices both on spending and employment. Kenya’s economic growth has been remarkable in recent years, with an expansion of 5.3% in 2014, and projections putting 2016 growth at 6.0%—within striking distance of China’s recent growth of 6.7%. In addition to its broader economic benefits, M-Pesa has been a business triumph. In November, M-Pesa operator Safaricom reported half-year profits of about $234 million U.S. dollars. M-Pesa, which charges users small fees, generated about 1/4th of total revenue. M-Pesa now has 17.6 million active users in Kenya, with at least one user in 96% of Kenyan households. The new research seems to bear out predictions made by figures including Bill Gates, whose foundation has made investments in mobile banking tech in Bangladesh as part of its campaign against global poverty. M-Pesa users can make deposits and withdrawals from their mobile accounts with 110,000 agents, in addition to sending and receiving money over the digital network. While this study focused on Kenya, similar mobile banking services are now available in 93 countries, with a total of 134 million active accounts. Fwd: [Networked-Labour] Muted trumpets announce birth of the latest Left/Marxist/Socialist International

fyi; "For a very interesting post-trotskyist organization, check out Italy's Communia Network. http://www.communianet.org/ Although it has its historical roots in trotskyism, this network has abandoned top-down politics and the party form, and puts a strong emphasis on the commons, self-management, local organising, networking and construction of counterpower. Great people, really worth looking into." ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: peter waterman <peterwaterman1936(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Dec 16, 2016 at 7:35 PM Subject: Re: [Networked-Labour] Muted trumpets announce birth of the latest Left/Marxist/Socialist International To: Theodoros Karyotis <tkaryotis(a)gmail.com> Cc: networked-labour_igopnet(a)lists.igopnet.cc, " CRITICAL-LABOUR-STUDIES(a)jiscmail.ac.uk" < CRITICAL-LABOUR-STUDIES(a)jiscmail.ac.uk>, WSFDiscuss List < WorldSocialForum-Discuss(a)openspaceforum.net>, Debate is a listserve that attempts to promote information and analyses of interest to the independent left in South and Southern Africa <debate-list(a)fahamu.org> Well, thanks, Theo. That site is, regrettably, only in Italian, which I can more or less understand via my limited Spanish. So, to do Comunia and ourselves a favour, I did a GoogleTrans job on it, only marginally improved. Interested people can check it up via its edress: 'Communia Network is a social and political network, the result of ideas and practices that are measured with the crisis of the anti-capitalist left in Europe and the progressive marginalization of credible alternatives. A project that points to a new political vocabulary. At the time of the structural crisis of the traditional labor movement and the impasse is over the institutional left and not, we move the ambition to reconstruct the places and times of the class struggle, identifying a new language, a new imagery, new tools at national and international connection. It's a project that wants to break with a tradition now useless to start surfing offshore. But we do not care the tabula rasa. We still want to use the Marxian approach without mummification. We appreciate critical Marxism, libertarian, we are interested in mixing it to radical ecologists reflections and feminism, to the criticism of this development. No nostalgia for the old narratives, no anxiety about novelty. We want to build a relationship, theoretical and political, with the highest points in the history of the revolution movements, from those who originated the labor movement to essential ones of the past century. In this spirit we aim to build, again, without nostalgia, and repentance. Focusing on a vision of direct democracy as a fundamental value and radical emancipation; on the self, the alternatives to capitalism and the break with its rules and laws as necessary awareness; the international dimension of the movement as a space necessary for their effectiveness. A project that puts into practice the network free of business, the reappropriation paths and a combatative self-management that measure up to the conflict through the self-organization and practice of real democracy. The confrontational self-management is a field to be filled with new meaning, taking in the history, the potentials, limitations and illusions, especially from the side of the relationship with power, with experiments "outside of business". The form of this project is a network made up of local people who try to build such practices and to connect them with the struggle for the defense of the territory, against the exploitation of labor, the right to education and to knowledge, self-determination of women and lgbti subjects.
