Fwd: Book "The End of the Beginning" finally published!
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 26 Aug '15

Hi Anna, I asked, following your question. A reply from Ben ... Cordially, Dante ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ben Goertzel <ben(a)goertzel.org> Date: Wed, Aug 26, 2015 at 11:03 AM Subject: Re: Book "The End of the Beginning" finally published! To: gbrain(a)listserv.vub.ac.be On Wed, Aug 26, 2015 at 3:55 PM, Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> wrote: > after forwarding this message about the book, I was asked why there are only > men within the author list ? Well, we made a web page for the book and sent out a bunch of emails and social media announcements soliciting authors.... Adult males were the ones who responded by sending chapters.... The author list wasn't restricted to our chums, though many who responded were in fact our chums... I did make an effort to get geographical/cultural representation ... but it happened that of the African and Asian transhumanists I solicited, the ones who responded favorably and wanted to submit chapters, were both young males... So I think this really reduces to the question of why the overall topic of the Singularity, transhumanism and advanced tech appeals to men more than women.... When I used to organize transhumanist conferences, recruiting one or two good on-topic female speakers was always something I had to explicitly strive for... I generally found men more eager to push themselves forward and advertise themselves in this way, than women... (Note, I am simply being empirical in the above observations, not making any hypotheses about the causes.... But I note that when I was working in psychology for a while in the 90s, things I organized attracted a high proportion of females.... So this doesn't seem to be an artifact of my or Ted's personal styles, but more of the subject area...) -- Ben -- Ben

invitation to the panel discussion 800 Years of Commons on September 8th, 2015 at 7pm in Berlin
by Kevin Flanagan 25 Aug '15

Sprache: *Englisch/Deutsch mit Simultanübersetzung* Anmeldung ist nicht erforderlich *800 Years of Commons * *The Meaning of Magna Carta, Commons, Per-to-Peer-Production and their legal protection in our times* This year, leaders of government, business and the bar are celebrating the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, the landmark affirmation of individual rights and law as a check on the power of the king. What does the “Great Charter” mean today when two very different sorts of sovereigns, the nation state and transnational corporations, now govern “the King’s forests”? Two noted activists, David Bollier and Michel Bauwens of the Commons Strategies Group/P2P Foundation, will discuss the role of the commons and peer to peer production in meeting people’s needs and the many enclosures of the commons that are abridging their fundamental rights. The two talks will also describe a wide variety of legal innovations that commoners are inventing to fulfill the principles of Magna Carta and build a new socio-economic order by constituting new rules and norms for their common production, governance and property modalities. The event will be moderated by Silke Helfrich. She is together with the two speakers a member of Commons Strategies Group. There is time for discussion with you after the talks and even after the event you will find some space to socialize over drinks. Simultaneous translation English/German will be provided throughout the event, registration is not required. *Information:* Joanna Barelkowska, Referat Internationale Politik E-Mail, barelkowska(a)boell.de, Telefon <+49028534306>+49(0)285 34 -306 <+49028534306> V erkehrsverbindungen Bus 147 Station Deutsches Theater (Fußweg 150 m) S-Bahn S1, 2, 25, 5, 7, 75, 9 Bahnhof Friedrichstraße (Ausgang Albrechtstr. ist nicht barrierefrei, Fußweg 250 m, Barrierefreier Ausgang=Ausgang Friedrichstr., dann Fußweg 750 m oder Bus 147) U-Bahn U6 Bahnhof Oranienburger Tor (barrierefreier Fußweg 500 m) Tram M1, M6, 12 U-Bhf. That would be great if we could laid down a work-learning-education tool/space for instance towards internet un-governance conf., next ISF and WSF 2016. With this spirit did create a test space (on Networked Labour University, under test space created for Global Square initiative, yet not been activated). We could test this to see if it would help out in rolling a collaborative work so that we could formulate and pool concrete ideas, proposals, and undertake practices and projects, link up with relavant groups and communities that share similar objective of building and connecting peoples' Internet(s) bottom up. The test space might be utilized as a collaborative open space, where we could organise our selves by sharing and providing necessary basic self-education materials, open access libraries, research, and form study-circles to learn more on information and communication technologies, networks and emancipatory complex systems in general and related topics in collaboration: http://networkedlabour.networg.nl/moodle/course/view.php?id=17 Any one like to join and test can either open and account or register as a guest here: http://networkedlabour.networg.nl/moodle/login/index.php in solidarity, orsan > On 25 Aug 2015, at 15:02, willi uebelherr <willi.uebelherr(a)riseup.net> wrote: > > > Dear friends, > > I'm not sure if this formulation (bring in, bring out) is correct in english. In such a scenario, death, disease and everyday material scarcity will be radically diminished, and life will be dramatically different in many other ways. But what will the path to this amazing future look like? How will human life grow and unfold as technology advances and Singularity approaches? The chapters in this book approach this issue from the perspectives of multiple visionary authors from around the globe, covering topics such as the impact of life extension, the future of money and exchange, the future of human psychology, biological self-modification, intelligence enhancement, automation and escalating unemployment, the possibility of global war between pro and anti technology forces, the impact of future technology on Asia and Africa, the emerging Global Brain, the future of surveillance and privacy, and much more. Fwd: <nettime> Germans begin the looting of Greece

Marketwatch. Not Jacobinmag.] By Darrell Delamaide Published: Aug 21, 2015 3:30 a.m. ET http://www.marketwatch.com/story/germans-begin-the-looting-of-greece-2015-0… WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — To the victor goes the spoils. The ink was not yet dry on the new European bailout accord for Greece before German companies started their plundering of Greek assets. Per provisions of the “agreement” imposed on Greece, the Athens government awarded the German company that runs the Frankfurt Airport, Fraport, a concession to operate 14 regional airports, mostly on the islands like Mykonos and Santorini favored by tourists, for up to 50 years in the first privatization of government-owned assets demanded by the creditors. The airport deal had been agreed upon last year by the previous Greek government and then suspended by Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras’s newly elected government this year as part of his pledge to prevent the fire sale of valuable public assets at bargain-basement prices. The airport deal gives Fraport the right to run the facilities as its own for 1.2 billion euros over the 50 years and an annual rent of 23 million euros. The German company is also pledging to invest significantly in upgrades for the airports. Under the terms of the new bailout accord, which provides 86 billion euros of new debt to a government already vastly overindebted, the country must sequester 50 billion euros worth of public assets to sell off at distressed prices to mostly foreign bidders — with German companies first in line. In the end, Tsipras had no choice but to buckle under to the creditors’ demands if he wanted to fulfill his other pledge of keeping the country in the euro.. But the plundering that has now begun unmasks the whole euro charade for what it really is — a war of conquest by money rather than by arms. Privatization is a standard feature of the neoliberal policy mix seeking smaller government, less state intervention and more free-market competition. (Privatization, of course, leads just as often to crony capitalism, while some services, such as electricity and trains, are arguably more efficient as government-owned monopolies.) But privatization in the context of the bailout accord is tantamount to expropriation, like forcing a bankrupt to sell the family silver in order to pay off debts. After piling more and more unsustainable debt onto the Greek government in two previous bailouts — most of which went back to banks in France and Germany — the victorious Northern European governments are now inviting their companies to partake in the spoils. Fraport, which ironically is majority-owned by state and local governments in Germany, has cherry-picked among Greece’s network of regional airports to take over only those that make a profit. It is happy to leave the 30 other loss-making airports in the hands of a bankrupt state. Greek Infrastructure Minister Christos Spirtzis told German television that this deal to take away the profitable airports and leave the ailing government with only those requiring subsidies “is more fitting for a colony than for an EU member state.” The official memorandum of understanding approved this week specifically mentions the airport deal and that it must be made with the buyer already agreed upon, even though the bulk of the privatizations that Greece must make will be finalized only in March of next year. Sven Giegold, a German member of the European Parliament who represents the environmentalist party, the Greens, called this isolated provision “bizarre.” Even with the announcement of the concession by the Greek government, however, the German company indicated that it might seek better terms than those previously agreed upon. This same pattern of taking over profitable assets at depressed prices will no doubt become evident in the other sales mandated by the agreement. Other assets to be sold will include the ports of Piraeus and Thessaloniki and valuable waterfront properties for hotel and casino development. State-owned electricity and train operations are also targeted for privatization. How anyone can view this blatant profiteering as furthering the process of European integration is a mystery. How any European can look at this naked German aggression with equanimity is also baffling. The irrepressible Yanis Varoufakis, unbowed after his resistance to capitulation ended his brief tenure as finance minister, notes in an annotated version of the MOU that the Greek government in May had proposed an alternative path to privatization that would have leveraged the public assets to promote more investment and growth. Under that plan, Greece would upgrade the public assets, fully utilizing aid available from EU sources like the European Investment Bank, to help drive growth and then privatize them at its own pace at a much higher price. Like every other suggestion from the Greek side, this proposal was dismissed out of hand by the German-led EU negotiators. View it in your browser <http://us5.campaign-archive1.com/?u=26ad249c931b759df41f6ebb8&id=91320c5dae…> . 0 Financial Report August 2015 Dear Robin Hood Member, You may have noticed that within the last two weeks our portfolio has decreased in value 13% (from $756,594.56 to $656,272.62). The markets are very nervous as we have not seen this type of down movements for many years. This is what our algorithm has been telling us to do: About a month ago our algorithm started having difficulties in finding new good investment opportunities. We interpreted it as a sign to get out of some of our riskier positions, and bought more of the less volatile stocks, such as Microsoft. Our risk metrics from the beginning of the year are: Sharpe ratio 0.70, Sortino ratio 4.44, and Calmar ratio 1.42. There has also been some short hedge fund attacks and one of our positions, https://anfi.com/, became a victim of that. Anfi is not a US company, and it has been a bit slow defending itself. The media has further complicated the situation with headlines talking about fraud. In general, we are holding on and waiting for a bounce back of the markets. That is what the best actors on the market are now doing. In addition, they are taking advantage of the situation and loading more stocks to their positions. They are especially interested in the US market companies. Our algorithm is telling us to follow. The best companies, which the algorithm has picked earlier are still the most prospective stocks, and in the algorithm’s interpretation the best place for our money. Sooner or later the market will put the right valuation on them. The algorithm has tested well in historical situations like this. Now is the time to keep our cool. The next month’s investment series could easily become our best performing series when the markets bounce back. I do work under similar severe conditions for several month in a similar ict giant. This strategy backed up by massive NSA like technology does not much differ from 17-18-19 cc wild capitalism or ford's t band. Was reading the day before the article about uberization of the university, striking similarities. Wondering if there is any creative organizing work going on targeting amazon and any exchange between unions Academia and workers.
