Whoa. You should really stop talking. You have NO idea what you're talking about. How about forced acculturation, not allowing them to speak their own language (which hold the record of their own history), confined them under threat of violent force into reservations, among other things. But, really, that's probably not even the worst of it -- the worst of it is that for reasons they couldn't ever understand is why you were doing all of these cruel things when they were willing to share it it all with you. Why, when they handed out their hand to be friends, you chopped it off. Remember, they're the ones who gave us Thanksgiving which is still "celebrated" in this nation today. Read the reports made of making first contact with the Native peoples here. You really should read up before propagating the attitudes of conquest. We call ourselves Enfable Videographic Storytelling <http://enfable.org/> and devote our time to telling those stories so often overlooked by mainstream media. This particular story is a powerful one – it is about communities self-organising to generate an economy which meets local needs rather than adhering to the whims of globalised profiteering. We are crowdfunding* to create a research film: a documentary which explores the new economy movement in Catalonia, to understand its cultural embeddedness, and learn what we can for the UK movement. Fwd: [members] Commons conquer Barcelona! A victory for David over Goliath

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Mayo Fuster Morell <mayo.fuster(a)eui.eu> Date: Tue, May 26, 2015 at 6:55 AM Subject: [members] Commons conquer Barcelona! A victory for David over Goliath To: P2P Value Members List <members(a)lists.p2pvalue.eu> Dear all! I know Barcelona politics is not the issue of the project, but in case of your interest I send you below a short reporting of municipal elections here and the commons conquering Barcelona approached from digital culture angel. Cheers! Mayo *Commons conquer Barcelona! A victory for David over Goliath * Yesterday (May 24th) the candidature “Barcelona in common” won the municipal elections (the option of 1 of each 4 people voting). “Now Madrid”- a candidature also connected to commons ethos - became a key force for the governance of Madrid city. Those are only two of the many surprises from yesterday municipal and regional elections in Spain. Cities might be the departing point of a larger political change. Electoral results opened up an optimist scenario for the attempt to win also the national elections at the end of this year, or even in a larger run, a South European coalition against austerity. Popular Party and Socialist Party remain the main parties, as since the country transition to democracy in late 70s, but usual politics power suffered an important blow. *Bipartidism drooping* from 65% at the last elections 4 years ago to 52% of the nationwide vote. The renewal of power forces, instead of its change, are also promoted by status quo interests as by the creation of new parties: the case of “Citizens”, which also emerged with force as a new political protagonist. Still the irruption of citizens candidature is impressive for its dimension and its speed. It also favored the increase of at least 5 points electoral participation. Only four years after* Indignados / 15M* rise up for "real democracy now" in opposition to politicians "who don't represent us" and the "dictatorship of the markets", its impact has become so evident that cannot be any more denied. The composition of the new candidatures are populated by the social movement fabric. To give a taste of it, Ada Colau direct action anti-eviction activist and squatter is going to be the next major of Barcelona. A joke from history: an activist against housing evictions "evicts" usual politicians from the city hall. Considering leaders trajectory, it could also be said that the cycle started with the anti-Globalization Movement (the background of Colau or Pablo Iglesias, leader of Podemos/Yes we can), but also succeeded to mobilized once again the generation that fought to bring back democracy in Spain against Franco regime (background of Manuela Carmena of “Now Madrid”, a retired judge and the mos probable next major of Madrid). >From the *programs*, the first thing to hightlight is the centrality of urgent plans to rescue citizens suffocating from the austerity policies, such as with the implementation of several modalities of basic income, and the revision of public services privatization. An ethical code to regulate politicians regarding transparency and the abolition of politician privileges (i.e. limits wages for politicians ($29,000 a year)) and the commitment to support citizens iniciatives. A part of its political importance, it is fascinating from an *organizational perspective*. In less than one year and without connections with political, economical, judicial and traditional media power, ordinary citizens coming together have been able to gain important positions in the political system. A victory for David over Goliath. Combining among its means crowd funding, crowdsourced programs, neighbourhood assemblies, and networked online voting. But also, as in the case of Podemos leader, building on popularity gained by his own TV program. How was the song? First we take Barcelona, and then we take Manhattan? Indeed, some are working for it. There has been a delegation of activist from NYC visiting Spain <http://www.nyctospain.com/> during the campaign in order to learn from the experience and "export" such people raising in their own cities. There are many lessons and insights to extract. I try to suggest you just a few hoping inspirational to start similar process in other countries. *The CC effect* - One of the - mainly young - citizens struggle that immediately preceded and afterward fed the emergence of the 15M mobilization was provoked by a reaction to a law promoted by the Government, repressive of the online sharing and the free culture (Sinde Law in December 2010). To a large extent this movement of collaborative cultures on the web reacted like Lessig did in 2008, shifting from “Creative Commons” to “Change Congress”. It moved from focusing on sectorial politics connected to intellectual property and Internet regulation to the understanding that to defend these freedoms it is necessary to change the political system as a whole. In this move, the free culture and peer production model became the inspirational organizational form to organize political protest. I explained in detail that move in my luncheon presentation at Berkman center <https://cyber.law.harvard.edu/events/luncheon/2011/11/morell> and at this article <http://www.onlinecreation.info/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/mfm_freeculturemo…>. The Spanish translation of Yochai Benkler's “The Wealth of networks <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wealth_of_Networks>” in this 2015 is not a coincidence, as a resource to understand those organizational models. In sum, the sectors holding the expertises around methodologies of co-creation and to engage with new forms of collaboration supported by online means has great political potential. *The Wikipedia “hidden innovation” model* - Even if there are large organizational innovations, the discourse should be “plain”, or “austere”. Mako Hill studied why Wikipedia was able to success in 2001 <http://mako.cc/academic/hill-almost_wikipedia-DRAFT.pdf>, and other attemps to built an online encyclopedia did not. One of its conclusion is that Wikipedia was the case adopting a more easy to understand concept, even if being innovative in its method. It held firm on the traditional notion of an encyclopedia: an idea old few centuries is easy to understand. Similarly, it could be argue here. The discourse able to raise votes for a political deep change in Spain is not vanguardist or particularly innovative, but popular, accessible to everyone, connected to basic needs. Some point to radical populism reinterpreting Laclau and Mouffe. It is a “battle” around the common sense, around gaining the hegemony. While, more vanguardist models, such as new parties connected to “innovative” discourse and Internet identity, such as Pirate Party or X Party, have been relevant providing organizational ideas, but did not work out obtaining general population votes (X Party obtained 0.64 % at last year European elections). In sum, innovative methods, but popular discourse connected to an agenda of basic common needs. *Top and Down *- These organizational processes are neither Top down not Bottom up, but “Top and Down”. Perhaps, more precisely: “A visually recognizable top working for a distributed down“. These forces rely on strong leaders, but also on the raise of a collaborative and free to operate base. A key concept is “overflow”. It refers to the capacity of losing control over the process, and to the freedom to operate in the engagement in the mobilization process. The raising of creativity of actions of support not under the control of the “parties” seems to be a relevant aspect for the success of these processes (this is the case of the movement of graphical liberation <http://www.movimientodeliberaciongraficadebarcelona.com/> around the candidatures). Furthermore, there are not clear boundaries about who is part of the “parties” or who is not, there are not rituals that establish who is part or who is not, but self activation though participation is the way to become part of it. Still leaders have strong presence, their face became one of the key symbols of the process (i.e. the symbol at the voting ballots is not the candidature logo, but the leader face). Visual symbols in the visual Internet, where TV though Internet became again a key channel. Particularly, TV and leadership remains a key channel to engage with popular sectors of population, that early middle class social movements adopters of Internet were not able to connect with. Leaders credibility is built over communication capacity and long social commitment. Candidatures lead by women - not matter their age - (women leaders at main cities such as Barcelona, Madrid and Valencia) are better able to increase vote by transmitting change and having a more democratic leadership style. As Ada Colau Barcelona next major (and originally zapatist put it): "lead by obeying people's orders". Leaders positions are based on power “for“ the base, not “over”. In sum, a visually recognizable social leadership, but an uncontrolled distributed form of engagement. Again, these are just three "impressionist" insights from the current people raising process in Spain. More to come. 2015 is the year of change, so it will continue. Now, time to celebrate. The newspaper reports that only 82% of academic articles in the humanities are ever cited — and estimates, even more alarmingly, that most scholarly articles appearing in peer-reviewed journals attract a meager audience of around ten readers. There are several factors that contribute to scholarship’s dwindling readership, the *Straits Times* suggests. Most peer-reviewed journals are prohibitively expensive for those of us without institutional affiliations. (After all, who can afford to pay something in the range of $30 for every interesting article that surfaces on JSTOR?) But the prime culprit, the article argues, is lack of general interest: academic writing is specialized and inaccessible, focusing on issues that bear little attraction for the layman. Where scholars of yore often doubled as public intellectuals, contributing works of long-lasting significance to publications like fabled *The Partisan Review*, today’s academics appeal to a narrow audience of like-minded professors and researchers, preferring to publish in niche scholarly journals that most of us have never heard of. The article goes on to argue — rightly, I think — that academics should strive to effect greater engagement with the public sphere. And several initiatives to this effect have launched recently: the NEH recently announced that it would be providing funding for scholars to write books aimed at a broader public <http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/style-blog/wp/2014/12/09/storming-the-i…> . The NEH program is admirable: I think it’s true that academics should strive to participate more actively in their communities, if only to make the relevance of their work obvious to a wider range of people and to facilitate cross-disciplinary connections that it’s difficult to establish from within a more insular sphere. But I think it is a mistake to intimate that research can be worthwhile only in virtue of its reach or tangible impact. *The Straits Times* mistakenly assumes that the main point of a research project is always the end product. Often, the crux of scholarly undertaking is dialogue along the way — and dialogue, be it interpersonal or at a talk or conference, can have broader effects on a wider community. The cultural push towards artifacts with obvious, immediate utility is symptomatic of a culture that fails to place sufficient value on humanistic or artistic pursuits, many of which don’t have tangible or quantifiable benefits. For one thing, quality of audience is often more important than quantity: a Joyce scholar may want to have a detailed conversation about a particular passage with other experts in the field. For another, it’s not clear what sorts of concrete change scholarship in the humanities is supposed to precipitate. An article about a question in ethics may have “succeeded” if it encourages us to subject our lives to greater scrutiny. Not all worthwhile scholarship comes in the form of recommendations to policymakers. *** Bureaucracy: why won’t scholars break their paper chains? 21 May 2015 | By Elaine Glaser <mime-attachment.jpg> Source: Alamy montage If the form-filling that plagues academia is pointless, why do academics comply with it? asks Eliane Glaser <mime-attachment.jpg> Source: Alamy/iStock montage We spend more and more time assessing what we do, and fewer and fewer hours doing it - just to give administrators something to do for their gold-plated salaries Time allocation forms, research excellence framework documentation, module monitoring, and research funding applications: these Gradgrindian horrors are the subject of many a senior common room rant, and they have been extensively documented in these pages <http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/features/audit-overload/410612.article>. Academics are spending less and less time thinking, reading and writing, and ever more time filling out forms. It seems clear that bureaucracy is somehow intertwined with the transformation of what were once institutions devoted to the pursuit of knowledge into commercial enterprises. Yet for me, two conundrums remain. If the “modernisation” of higher education is supposedly all about efficiency and productivity, why are managers imposing tasks that are by any common-sense measure a complete waste of time? And if academics are so demonstrably fed up with demands to fill out yet another piece of pointless paperwork, why do we continue to consent? As part of a knowledge exchange project at my university – itself arguably a product of the bureaucratic imperative to measure “impact” – I organised a modest survey of academic bureaucracy: first, to identify the bureaucratic activities carried out by colleagues at my institution and beyond; second, to attempt to identify their source and apparent motivation; and third – crucially – to probe the underlying factors that might explain the curious fact of academic compliance. Serendipitously, a book of essays on bureaucracy by David Graeber, the anthropologist and activist, appeared in March. Titled *The Utopia of Rules <http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/books/the-utopia-of-rules-on-technolo…>*, it’s a fascinating elucidation of an ostensibly unpromising topic. Bureaucracy is traditionally associated with the public sphere. But as Graeber demonstrates, this association is far from natural: it is the result of bureaucratic controls being forcibly applied to the public sector. Meanwhile, the private sector appears lean only because the regulatory apparatus has been all but stripped away: in the public sector, bureaucracy is called “accountability”, in the private sector, it’s “red tape”. Shielded, therefore, by an illusory opposition between the market and bureaucracy, the new university management imposes systems of audit, evaluation, assessment <http://www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/comment/opinion/academic-assessment-g…> and accreditation in the name of increased value for money. Yet this is deeply ironic, because the infinite regress of online forms and email chains leads academics directly away from productivity. In a related, widely read article for *Strike!* magazine titled “On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs”, Graeber asks why it is that in advanced Western economies, saturated in the rhetoric of austerity, and supposedly reaping the rewards of modern technology, administrative labour has proliferated. “In a world ever more in thrall to the imperatives of profit, competition and market-driven efficiency,” Graeber observes, “it is bizarre for employers in the public and private sector alike to be behaving like the bureaucracies of the old Soviet Union, shelling out wages to workers they do not appear to need.” Graeber’s explanation is that long-hours pen-pushing – or mouse-clicking – is imposed on employees as a form of social control: it’s a way of ensuring that we are too monitored, busy and tired to raise questions or revolt. The “moral and spiritual damage” resulting from the fact that “huge swathes of people…spend their entire working lives performing tasks they secretly believe do not really need to be performed” is, Graeber claims, “a scar across our collective soul”. Likewise, bureaucracy has become a ubiquitous cliché of modern academia, and to call it out seems naive, as if not accepting the “real world”. Yet it produces a disjunctive sense of playing along with a fiction. If accounting measures applied to academia to make it more efficient actually have the opposite effect, what is their real purpose? Is the impulse to count and assess all activity via “performance indicators” and “quality assurance” a quixotic yet sincere attempt to increase productivity; the application of a belief that things are not real unless delineated virtually; a simple failure to grasp that the more time one spends trying to “capture” academic “output” via bean-counting and online systems of representation, the more it slips away? Since the financial crash of 2008-09, we have seen ample evidence of misguided faith in marketisation to suggest that this explanation is credible. Yet it does not account for the moralising and punitive manner in which bureaucratic demands are formulated. They are derived from private sector managerialism, yet while they have been largely flushed out of business itself, they are applied to academia in a correctional spirit, as if it is not behaving in a sufficiently businesslike manner. There’s a simple explanation for the drive to quantify everything: the replacement of the horizontal self-government of university departments with the vertical hierarchy of departmental heads and senior management. Academics used to document their output on their CVs; now, managers have to find ways to justify their existence. “Everyone knows the results are absurd,” Graeber tells me via email. “We all spend more and more hours of our day discussing, analysing and assessing what we do, and fewer and fewer hours actually doing it, and all of it, just to give these high-level administrators who aren’t really needed something to do for their gold-plated salaries.” But this is more than just a power shift, Graeber notes. “It represents a transformation in our basic assumption about what a university is…Thirty years ago, if you said ‘the university’, people assumed you were referring to the faculty. Now if you say it, people assume you’re referring to the administration.” The corporate bureaucrats who now run universities are “often more interested in real estate speculation, fund-raising, sports, and ‘the student experience’ than anything that has to do with learning, teaching, or scholarship at all”. Through a curious inversion, to insist that knowledge should be valued in and of itself, and that universities should be places of learning, has come to seem morally suspect. Just as public sector employees are repeatedly reminded that their salaries are funded by “hard-working taxpayers”, academics feel increasingly beholden to fee-paying students. The result is guilt for having a nice job, for being able to stare out the window thinking interesting thoughts about subjects that have no obvious, tangible “application”. It’s almost as if it would be better if academics spent the bulk of their time filling out forms for the sake of it, because at least then they wouldn’t be enjoying themselves on the public, or the students’, purse – even if that resulted in fewer books being written. One acknowledged that bureaucracy ‘can become addictive and/or act as a means of avoiding other activities’. Is this an awkward truth - that form‑filling provides convenient relief from taxing intellectual labours? The bureaucratic lexicon is revealingly disciplinary: time allocation software is introduced to make academics “account for” their time, with all the financial and moral connotations of bookkeeping and being “held to account”. A recent KPMG report on time allocation monitoring stressed that “it is important that t _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

I found a new friend in Ralph Nader, made a big splash at Yale, and withstood peer review scrutiny in the local University of Wisconsin Madison Data Discussion Group at the new Discovery Center. *Ralph Nader in Rowe, Massachusetts* The event in the Bay State was Ralph’s way of working on the “Citizen Summons” concept where you build support for an issue one congressperson at a time, getting a core group of 15 volunteers to bring a group of 300 to 500 people to a meeting with the congressperson about that issue. This way, multiplied across the whole US Congress, a group of citizens less than 1% of the population can start a social movement on any issue that has majority support in the opinion polls. I used the law of return to my advantage, that is, as you give so shall you receive in return. I shipped a case of 100 of my videos on Peace Economics to the conference, so that everyone who came got a free video. Ralph talked to me privately at the first dinner before the first session as I sat down next to him when I had the fortunate opportunity. I didn’t know if he would stay the whole conference or turn proceedings over to a confederate after a while. Fortunately, he stayed the whole conference, with his sister as his confederate intently listening the whole time and often participating. I later found out that the first conference he held at the same site a half year earlier was much more participatory, but feedback from that event encouraged him to play a much stronger lecture role in the three day conference. Ralph generously announced my gift of a documentary on the military economy in the first of four sessions. He acknowledged my research efforts at all the sessions. In the third session he opened the floor for five minute speeches from the audience as I led off followed by another Wisconsin colleague. Then I passed a flyer around with the 10 domestic effects of military (empire) spending. In the final session Ralph talked about how empires decay and are brought down by internal forces rather than external forces, reinforcing the empire concept my video leads logically into. During the conference a half dozen or so people of the fifty two in attendance personally thanked me for the video, and at the end I passed out more videos requesting that they donate those videos to their local library, for a total of 71 videos distributed. One person actually viewed the DVD during the conference and gave positive feedback. After the conference there were significant activity increases on my two or three main websites. *Yale Legal Fiction Conference, New Haven, Connecticut* The “legal fiction” conference in Yale the two days before returning home May 20th, also went very well. I met the first speaker, a professor from Germany, one hour before the conference was to start. She took my card as I said I had invented new better macroeconomic and global warming theories, and later on in the conference called on me by name. The two of us from Wisconsin left a big impression asking questions during the conference, and heads turned to look at me in the last role when I clearly laid out the biased situation in the Ferguson Missouri grand jury case in the shooting death of Michael Brown by policeman Darren Wilson. The key facts were that the policeman testified first, as if Michael Brown was being investigated and the policeman was testifying against him. This set up the policeman’s fiction as authentic and was supported by testimony of a white woman. This white woman was never at the scene the prosecutor admitted, one month after the decision not to charge the officer, when the prosecutor was interviewed on a local radio station. Later I went to the Yale Law School in search of the Reuschlein Room mentioned in an internet listing of a distant relation, Harold Reuschlein, who graduated from Yale Law School in the forties and helped to found Villanova Law School in the fifties as well as writing a famous law text book. The gatekeeper at the door lead me to someone else in groundskeeping who might know of this Room, who led me to another person, who led me to another person in the library in the top three floors of the building. Together we discovered that Harold had come from Burlington, Wisconsin, a small town in Southern Wisconsin not unlike my great great grandfather’s home town of Plain, Wisconsin. In fact, Burlington had the church that notable Madison journalist John Nichols attended as a child. John Nichols now frequents the book store of Spring Green, Wisconsin, the next town over from Plain, Wisconsin, and he also knows of the Reuschlein clan. Most Reuschleins, a rare name in the Munich phone book, either live in Wisconsin or Kulmbach, Bavaria, Germany according to the world book of Reuschleins with about 100 listings in the whole world. So when 52 year old Heinrich Reuschlein moved from Tauberbischoffsheim, Baden, Germany, to Plain, Wisconsin in 1854 with my then 16 year old great grandfather Sebastion, he started an explosion of Reuschleins from Wisconsin. Small world. *Data Discussion Group in Wisconsin* The next day, May 21st, I gave a presentation on how to construct a model in 28 steps to a Data Discussion Group at UW-Madison’s Discovery Center that had started February 5th. My article consisted of 17 pages of my collected works from my first book in 1986, two papers in 2014 and one in 2015. I had impressed the group with insightful observations and questions for months now, and my suggested topic was finally taken up. Unfortunately, attendance was light as the semester had just ended with grades turned in just days before. But interest was high and one participant by teleconference from Marshfield viewed two of my papers online afterwards, as did a few from Madison before and after. So peer review of my work by this group went well. I am looking forward to presenting a hundred year history of the US military budget, deficit, and economic growth in La Crosse Wisconsin at the Economic and Business History Society next Friday, May 29th, 2015. I also will participate in the University of Toledo Peace Education symposium July 26 to August 2nd later this summer. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: M. Fioretti <mfioretti(a)nexaima.net> Date: Fri, May 22, 2015 at 3:31 PM Subject: EU Research Project on Digital DIY, FOSS and Open Hardware To: marco(a)freeknowledge.eu Greetings, This is a request to my contacts (*) who share my same interest in Open technologies and knowledge. I am working on an EU H2020 Research Project on "Digital DIY", to study how this phaenomenon (which heavily relies on Free/Open Source Software and Open Hardware) will impact every area of society, from work to ethics, arts and environmental sustainability. The project outcomes will include guidelines to support both education and policy making on Digital DIY. To know more, please read the "About" page [1] and the Project blog [2]. One of my duties in the project is disseminate its activities. For this reason, I kindly request if you could spread the news, as much as you see fit, about: the Project in general; the survey mentioned in the blog; and the "Add Resource" form [3]. I would also greatly appreciate any pointer to any organization and community, of any kind, from industry associations to Universities, EU institutions, NGOS and Public Amdinistrations... that is already engaged in similar research and dissemination, as well as pointers to events in this space. I am at your disposal for any question you may have about the Project. Thank you in advance for your time! Best Regards, Marco Fioretti [1] http://www.didiy.eu/project/about-digital-diy [2] http://www.didiy.eu/blog [3] http://www.didiy.eu/node/add/didiy-case (*) please accept my apologies if you received more than one copy of this message: it simply means that I have more email addresses for you in my address book, but I don't know which one is still current, sorry. -- http://mfioretti.com -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
