helping to curate the p2p blog
by Michel Bauwens 19 Mar '14

19 Mar '14

dear friends, especially this year, with two fulltime contracts covering whole year (after flok, the liquid democracy project in lunenberg, germany this fall), the continued curation of the p2p blog is a bit harder than usual. With our current team, i.e. supported especially by Ah Uhm, Kevin Flanagan and a few other irregular contributors, we would like to make a special call for more contributors. Curating is actually fun, and the regularity would be up to you .. though we prefer some regularity for planning purposes ... Queremos que en este proceso puedan participar, si lo desean, aquellos que han aportado de manera positiva, *lo cual no significa necesariamente que hayan apoyado o sean "simpatizantes"*sino que, simplemente, no hayan tenido una actividad hostil. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Net Neutrality: Dangerous Loopholes Remain After Key Vote by Lead EU Parliament Committee

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Tue, Mar 18, 2014 at 5:11 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Net Neutrality: Dangerous Loopholes Remain After Key Vote by Lead EU Parliament Committee To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: NET NEUTRALITY, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, EUROPEAN SINGLE MARKET FOR ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS, INDUSTRY COMMITTEE, PILAR DEL CASTILLO VERA, JENS ROHDE, CATHERINE TRAUTMANN, NEELIE KROES La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/net-neutrality-dangerous-loopholes-remain-a… Net Neutrality: Dangerous Loopholes Remain After Key Vote by Lead EU Parliament Committee *** Brussels, 18 March 2014 -- The "Industry" (ITRE) committee has just adopted its report on the Telecom Regulation and Net Neutrality. Despite improvements - especially in comparison with Neelie Kroes' proposal [1] -, the committee and its rapporteur, Pilar del Castillo Vera, bowed to the pressure [2] of the telecom lobby, and major loopholes remain in the text. If the Internet as we know it is to be protected from the rent-seeking behaviour of big corporations dominating the digital economy, these loopholes must be closed during the European Parliament vote in plenary session on 3 April. *** "Today's vote is a sign of the massive lobbying influence of big telecom operators over the European legislative process. The regulation's big loopholes will have to be corrected when the European Parliament casts its final vote in a few weeks. The many MEPs who have proposed constructive amendments at the committee stage now have an opportunity to table new amendments across party lines so as to ensure that the general interest prevails over the short-term commercial interests of the telecom industry." said Miriam Artino, legal and policy analyst at La Quadrature du Net. "What is at stake in this regulation is no less than the fate of the Internet commons. Are we going to let big telecom operators and Internet giants dictate the terms of the digital economy or will lawmakers adopt strong binding principles making sure that the Internet remains a decentralized platform for freedom of communication and innovation, where citizens and new entrants can challenge entrenched players? This is the crucial question that will soon be addressed through the upcoming plenary vote, and one that citizens should ask to their elected representative in Brussels ahead of the upcoming EU elections" concludes Félix Tréguer, co-founder of La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/kroes-unacceptable-anti-net-neutrality-law-… 2. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/ft-telecoms-groups-blast-eu-net-neutrality-… 3. http://www.savetheinternet.eu/ 4. http://wepromise.eu/ ** About La Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. Fwd: Reminder deadline 25 March for submitting abstracts Workshop 'Common People, Common Rules' (Pamplona, 30-31 October 2014);
by Michel Bauwens 18 Mar '14

18 Mar '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: collective-action <collective-action(a)uu.nl> Date: Tue, Mar 18, 2014 at 11:53 AM Subject: Reminder deadline 25 March for submitting abstracts Workshop 'Common People, Common Rules' (Pamplona, 30-31 October 2014); To: 25th of March: DEADLINE CALL FOR PAPERS "COMMON PEOPLE, COMMON RULES", Pamplona 30-31/10/2014. With this e-mail we would like to remind you of the deadline for submitting abstracts for *the Workshop 'Common People, Common Rules. Institutions and self-governance in historical perspective'*, to be held in Pamplona, 30-31 October 2014. Abstracts should be submitted *before the 25th of March** to josem.lana(a)unavarra.es <josem.lana(a)unavarra.es>*. During our two-day workshop we will be focusing on institutions for collective action, that are self-governing and self-regulating in historical perspective. At the workshop much attention will be given to the historical analysis of common land regimes, which has witnessed a clear shift in focus from the study of the abolition of commons towards the analysis of the internal logic of their functioning. The workshop however also aims at attracting studies of the regulation of other types of self-governing institutions. In general, we aim at understanding how efficient and effective regulation can be developed, in a context of self-governing, collective institutions, both in rural and urban contexts. In such institutions, rules were designed and put into practice by the stakeholders themselves. Many questions however still remain unanswered: * How did stakeholders make sure that the body of rules they designed remained effective, efficient and sufficiently simple for all to understand and apply? * Were old rules replaced by entirely new ones, or were they simply adjusted to the new circumstances? * Were rules always designed according to what the local users thought was needed, or were rules copied from other examples in the vicinity? * How did rule-makers ensure that sanctions were avoided as much as possible? * What level of sanctioning was sufficient to scare off potential free-riders? These and related questions will be at the core of the meeting. The organizers encourage in particular submissions that introduce new historical source material and novel ways of using historical sources, inspired by other social sciences. The organizers welcome in particular quantitative and long-term studies, that are also able to connect historical developments to contemporary debates surrounding the management of commons. All abstracts and papers should be submitted and presented in English. Abstracts of papers should be submitted *by 25 March 2014*; the final papers are due by 15 October 2014. Travel and accommodation expenses of the (principal) authors of the papers selected for inclusion in the workshop will be reimbursed. A selection of the best papers will be considered for publication as part of a special issue for a relevant peer-reviewed English-language journal in the field. For more info and the full Call for Papers, please visit *http://www.collective-action.info/_AGE_20141030_UPN-Pamplona <http://www.collective-action.info/_AGE_20141030_UPN-Pamplona> * *________________________________* In addition, we would also like to draw your attention to the Call for Papers of the *3rd IASC European Meeting*. This meeting, entitled 'From generation to generation - the use of commons in a changing society' will be held on 16-19 September 2014 in Umeå, Sweden. Abstracts with a maximum of 400 words should be submitted *before 1 April 2014*; final papers are due 18 August 2014. For more info and submitting your abstract, please visit *http://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-economics/iasc-2014/abstract-submission/ <http://www.slu.se/en/departments/forest-economics/iasc-2014/abstract-submis…>* Kind regards, Tine De Moor*.* -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Best regards Silke Invitation to Press Conference on Commons TOMORROW, 12hs, ASP 5G2 Von: ROMEVA i RUEDA Raül <raul.romevairueda(a)europarl.europa.eu> Press conference: Launch of Manifesto for the Commons in the European Union Tuesday, 18th March. 12hs ASP 5G2 During the 7th European parliamentary term, many debates took place concerning common goods, particularly given the first successful European Citizens Initiative, Right2Water. The commons are universal, they belong to everyone and they must not be appropriated by authorities and/or private interests. European Institutions, as guarantee for civil and fundamental liberties, for peace, for cultural diversity and for the preeminence of right, have to assure the respect and the care for the commons. Therefore, tomorrow at noon we launch a Manifesto on Commons, calling on a permanent formal intergroup in the European Parliament for the next term to work on common goods and give them legal status. There, the Manifesto will be distributed in different languages (IT, ES, EN, FR, GR, DE) On top, we will count with the special participation of Ms Anne LeStrat, President of Eau de Paris and Aqua Publica Europea, and Mr. René Fernández Revollo, Ambassador of Estado Plurinacional de Bolivia in front of the EU. CAMRI Seminar: Jonathan Hardy on his forthcoming book "Critical Political Economy of the Media: An Introduction"
by Christian Fuchs 18 Mar '14

18 Mar '14

Critical Political Economy of Communications – A Mid-Term Report: The First Fifty Years and the Future Jonathan Hardy University of Westminster Harrow Campus (tube stop: Northwick Park, Metropolitan Line) Wed, March 26. !4:00-16:00 Room A6.08 Registration at latest until Monday, March 24, per e-mail to christian.fuchs(a)uti.at Abstract If we take the late 1960s as a starting point an explicitly defined ‘critical political economy of communications’ is fifty years old. How salient today are the core concerns that shaped this tradition? What are the emergent themes in contemporary critical media studies? Jonathan Hardy will discuss his book-length review of critical political economists’ work (Hardy, Jonathan. Critical Political Economy of Media: An Introduction. London: Routledge.), and reflect on what their approaches can offer for contemporary investigations into the problems of the media. Biography Dr Jonathan Hardy is Reader in Media Studies at the University of East London and teaches political economy of media at Goldsmiths College, London. He is the author of Critical Political Economy of Media: An Introduction (Routledge, forthcoming; Cross-Media Promotion (Peter Lang, 2010), Western Media Systems (Routledge, 2008) and writes on media, marketing communications, regulation and policy.
