Fwd: [opennetcoalition] La Quadrature du Net Gaining in Strength!
by Michel Bauwens 28 Mar '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Fri, Mar 28, 2014 at 6:27 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] La Quadrature du Net Gaining in Strength! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: LA QUADRATURE DU NET La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/la-quadrature-du-net-gaining-in-strength La Quadrature du Net Gaining in Strength! *** Paris, 28 March 2014 -- La Quadrature du Net is delighted to welcome Adrienne Charmet-Alix to the operational team as campaign manager and Jean Cattan, Laurent Chemla and Laurence Vandewalle as new members to its strategic directions council. With these reinforcements and the continued support of citizens, La Quadrature du Net is ready to overcome all obstacles in the defence of rights and freedoms in the digital sphere. *** Historian by training, Adrienne Charmet-Alix joins us from Wikimedia France where she was Director of Programmes since 2011. She brings with her extensive experience of volunteer mobilisation, communication with the public and institutions, and of working in an international context. She will join the operational team on 22 April. For years Adrienne has followed the actions of La Quadrature. With her on board, we hope to extend the reach of our actions, and communicate and engage with a wider public. On the other hand, Arthur Messaud, who has been a pivotal member of the operational team for more than a year, is leaving at the end of March and we thank him warmly for all the work he accomplished. The strategic directions council of La Quadrature, already bolstered by the presence of Jérémie Zimmermann freed from his operational duties, will now be further enriched by three new members and we are grateful that they have accepted this voluntary position: - Jean Cattan, holds a Ph.D. in Public Law and has participated in La Quadrature's legal reflections and actions for a long time already; - Laurent Chemla is the founder of GANDI, a domain name registrar and cloud hosting company. He was also one of the pioneers in the defence of digital freedoms and today runs a couple of projects [1] to increase user independence; - Laurence Vandewalle, political advisor to the European Parliament for 13 years with extensive experience of digital policies, software patents and copyright reform. "We warmly welcome Adrienne Charmet-Alix to the operational team and the three new members to the strategic directions council, Jean Cattan, Laurent Chemla et Laurence Vandewalle. We look forward to working with them and call on all of you to participate [2] in our actions and support [3] our efforts to protect online freedoms and rights" concluded Philippe Aigrain, co-founder of La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. http://www.caliop.net/is-email-dead-surveillance-inevitable-introducing-pro… 2. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/panel-participer 3. https://support.laquadrature.net/ ** About La Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Day Seven Before The Vote to Save Net Neutrality! Parliamentarians Must Protect The Open Internet!

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Thu, Mar 27, 2014 at 7:56 AM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Day Seven Before The Vote to Save Net Neutrality! Parliamentarians Must Protect The Open Internet! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: NET NEUTRALITY, EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT, EUROPEAN SINGLE MARKET FOR ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS, PILAR DEL CASTILLO VERA, JENS ROHDE, CATHERINE TRAUTMANN, NEELIE KROES La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/day-seven-before-the-vote-to-save-net-neutr… Day Seven Before The Vote to Save Net Neutrality! Parliamentarians Must Protect The Open Internet! *** Paris, 27 March 2014 -- Next week, on 3 April, Members of the European Parliament will vote on the future of Net Neutrality and the open Internet in Europe. After years of struggle across the European Union, either solid legal protections for the freedom of expression and innovation online will be introduced or telecom operators will be given free reign to discriminate between online communications and use this to force out competition. In light of approaching European elections [1], citizens must call on [2] their representatives to vote in favour of the protection of fundamental rights and the internet as we know it. *** This vote comes after five years of struggle for Net Neutrality. In the coming days, telecom lobbies and the European Commission will attempt to lean on the European Parliament as much as possible to get their version of the text passed. To counter this, and, considering the current political balance in the Parliament and the nature of preceding votes [3] in committees, only a strong and sustained citizen mobilisation will be able to convince a majority of MEPs to prevent the death of the open Internet and to break party lines if need be. The adoption of "Marco Civil da Internet" [4] this week by the Brazilian Congress reaffirms the importance of Net Neutrality for the rights of citizens and sends a strong signal to the European Parliament to defend the same values. The right time to act is now. Citizens across the European Union must contact [5] their representatives and call on them to vote for the positive amendments [6] tabled by the Social-Democrats (S&D), the Greens (Greens/EFA), the United Left (GUE/NGL) and by the Liberals [7] (ALDE). With these amendments adopted, the text would enshrine the principle of Net Neutrality effectively and prohibit all forms of discrimination. Moreover, two important loopholes would be closed: neither the notion of "specialised services" nor contractual exemptions accorded to deal with network congestion, could be exploited to circumvent the principle of Net Neutrality. "All citizens concerned by the threat to the open Internet, freedom of expression and innovation online must contact their MEPs and call on them to vote in favour of Net Neutrality. The battle on the 3 April will either mark an unprecedented advance towards the protection of our fundamental rights, or mark the final days of the open Internet as we know it. We defeated ACTA, now we mobilise to safe our Internet! Particularly considering the approaching European elections, every call, email and fax can make the difference and help MEPs resist the telecom lobbying [8] at this sensitive phase of the legislative process" concluded Félix Tréguer, co-founder of the association La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. http://wepromise.eu/ 2. http://savetheinternet.eu/ 3. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/net-neutrality-dangerous-loopholes-remain-a… 4. https://www.laquadrature.net/en/gigaom-brazilian-lawmakers-approve-bill-of-… 5. https://www.laquadrature.net/wiki/How_to_contact_a_MEP 6. http://laquadrature.net/files/Plenary%20amdmts%20on%20NN.pdf 7. Fwd: [Networkedlabour] Alex White: Unions and the Newest Media: Is this their Future?

To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org, Networked Labour < wordpress(a)networkedlabour.net>, CRITICAL-LABOUR-STUDIES(a)jiscmail.ac.uk Is this the future of unions? - March 19, 2014 - Blog <http://alexwhite.org/category/blog/>, Campaigning<http://alexwhite.org/category/blog/campaign/>, Politics <http://alexwhite.org/category/blog/politics/> Share 15<https://twitter.com/share?original_referer=http%3A%2F%2Falexwhite.org%2F&so…> 5<https://www.linkedin.com/cws/share?url=http://alexwhite.org/2014/03/future-…> There is a tide starting to rise in the world of progressive activism, and unions in Australia and globally may get caught in it. The tide is comprised of decentralised, leaderless, temporary movements, empowered by online organising platforms like MoveOn, Change.org, Avaaz, Twitter and Facebook. These platforms have given everyday people unprecedented power to come together quickly and in large numbers over a very short period of time to achieve a common goal, and then disperse. In my view, these changes are largely being driven by generational attitudes and the rapid deployment of “disruptive technology”. For progressive institutions, like unions or non-profits like Amnesty International, Oxfam, Greenpeace or the Sierra Club, there are both great opportunities and significant risks. As a case study, I’d like to look at a campaign run by United Voice in Queensland. United Voice is a progressive union that represents minimum-wage workers like cleaners, childcare professionals, security guards, bakers and the like. For many years, United Voice has been organising at the Brisbane Airport. The airport, despite being majority owned by industry superannuation funds, including Australian Super (the fund for cleaners), used contract cleaning. This form of employment is particularly exploitative of international students, whose Visa conditions make it unlawful to work more than a certain number of hours per week. However, the contractor would often ignore this and employ the international students for more hours. As was reported in the Brisbane Times<http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/queensland/brisbane-airport-rocked-by-sexua…>, this resulted in an unethical cleaning supervisor at the Brisbane airport blackmailing women international students for sexual favours. United Voice raised this and other unlawful employment practices with the management of the Brisbane Airport but were told it was a contractor issue, and thus not the responsibility of the Airport. United Voice decided to run a petition on the site CoWorker<http://www.coworker.org/petitions/brisbane-airport-stop-deportation-of-wome…>about the sexual abuse taking place, and in a very short space of time, over 2,800 people signed the petition. The person fronting the petition was one of the young international student cleaners who worked at the Airport and had witnessed the supervisor’s sexual abuse and was speaking out. Within a few days, the Airport was forced to act. The supervisor was fired and investigated by the police, and the Airport management agreed to negotiate with the union over various employment matters for the cleaners. This on the one hand was a great result of the union and the workers. But it highlights an underlying fundamental. Although it was the union who had done most of the organisation behind the scene, there was nothing union-specific about the tactic which had resulted in the win. Anyone could have set up that petition. In fact, the CoWorker site is filled with examples<http://www.coworker.org/categories>of everyday people organising actions in the workplace where there is a union vacuum. People within and outside a workplace are coming together very quickly to take action on a specific issue. Union campaigners should be both heartened and worried at this. If workers don’t need a union institution to win change in their workplace, what will cause them to join in the future? Another example of the rise of these decentralised, leaderless movements, is the Occupy movement that sprung up in 2011 and quickly spread throughout the industrialised world. People came together in a decentralised, disorganised, leaderless way, empowered by social networks and the Internet, and then dispersed leaving no institution behind. A more recent Australian version is the “March in March” Facebook movement<https://www.facebook.com/marchinmarch>, which saw over 50,000 people take to the streets on Sunday 16th of March. While it remains to be seen whether this movement turns into anything, the reality is that thinking about permanence or “demands” utterly misunderstands what these groups are. Rather than express their dissatisfaction and frustration through formal institutions, 30,000 people march in Melbourne and tens of thousands in Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide, Hobart, Perth, Brisbane and Alice Springs, simply through a Facebook page. This is a fundamental shift in how civic protests organise themselves. They come together quickly, then disperse. Are traditional advocacy institutions relevant in these circumstances? For other non-profits, you just need to look at platforms like Avaaz and Change.org which regularly campaign on environmental or human rights issues, putting similar pressure on the Sierra Club or Amnesty. In response to crisis-levels of membership density in the USA and New Zealand, the peak union bodies have decided to adopt a new organisational model to promote unionism and collective action. The response is (in my view) largely due to very hostile anti-worker laws, which place severe restrictions on what registered unions can do. In the USA, the AFL-CIO has created Working America<http://www.workingamerica.org/>, a “community affiliate”. Working America campaigns outside the workplace for the various social and economic objectives of unions, and works to build a membership from non-unionised working people who traditionally are viewed as Republicans or “Fox News viewers”. Membership of Working America is free, although members are encouraged to become regular donors, in place of membership dues. By all accounts, the Working America experiment is very successful. Free of the legal straightjackets imposed by the US Labor laws, Working America is more agile and responsive than many traditional unions. Additionally, models like Working America facilitate working people to organise in hostile anti-union workplaces like Walmart. People who have never had a union experience can learn what it is like to act collectively and win dignity at work. Without the requirement to formally register a union, workers can organise and take action without the legal strictures of a union ballot and the risks of union-busting campaigns by employers. Similarly, there is an interesting experiment in New Zealand that is similar to Working America. Called Together <http://www.together.org.nz/>, the New Zealand Council of Trade Unions is attempting to organise a very dangerous, un-unionised workforce in the forestry industry. The forestry industry in NZ is rife with unethical contracting and subcontracting, which has resulted in low safety standards and an unprecedented level of workplace deaths. It is also un-unionised and New Zealand’s workplace laws place very onerous restrictions on unions and workers to organise an employer or workplace. The NZCTU in response has created a community model of unionism in Together, where the cost of entry is just a dollar and members are encouraged to donate in lieu of regular membership dues. Members of Together get the full benefits of union membership, including workplace advice and assistance, and advocacy, although (as far as I’m aware) distinct from the formal legal structures that a union would have. Together is New Zealand-wide effort, with something particularly interesting happening in the forestry sector. The NZCTU and the First Union, which has formal coverage over forestry, have created First Forestry Together. Because the largest traditional barrier to entry (membership dues) has been removed, Together is finding that their organising conversations with forestry workers and their families has become much easier. Together has Family membership options (so parents can join up their kids who may work in forestry), and also Whanau membership (Whanau are Maori extended families). Remember, the objective in this case is to organise the forestry industry, rather than to grow a union’s financial membership on paper. Together is also able to be more agile and responsive than a traditional union, and explore more innovative methods of organising and fundraising. They’ll soon be exploring widening their coverage and making membership completely free, with the objective of unionising the un-unionised. I’m very excited about both Together and Working America. I hope these kinds of organisational models straddle the generational and technical divides that I referred to at the start of this article. Unions and progressive organisations need to experiment with different organisation models which are leaner, more adaptive and more responsive, and willing to make mistakes or change direction. Ironically, one of the union movement’s greatest strengths – their organisation itself – can also be a weakness. Tim Lyons, from the ACTU, talked about this challenge in his speech at the recent ACTU organising conference<http://actu.org.au/Media/Speechesandopinion/TimLyonsclosingaddresstotheAust…> . We need to change. We need to bust open our structures in way that makes our organising more sustainable in more places. The traditional model of trade union organisation – a union shop with a collective agreement, remains a powerful force for good. It has changed millions of workers lives for the better and it still can. We need to make that work everywhere we can, and break down barriers – within unions and between unions – to making it work But we also need to recognise that we need different models as well – that we can’t make that traditional model work everywhere. We need to have different models of membership and organisation. The ACTU is thinking and talking with union leaders about how we move a program of change: in traditional organising, in alternative membership and organising models, in how we do politics and influence public policy, and in how we influence capital markets and be better stewards of workers’ capital. Your thinking and talking at this conference is an important contribution to that. I’m heartened to hear the likes of Tim Lyons, as well as union leaders in the USA and New Zealand, willing to think differently about the future of unions. The great risk for unions, not to mention other progressive institutions, is that they will become irrelevant to everyday people. Especially in geographic or industry areas with low or no union presence, adopting these kinds of new models of activism and membership are essential to remaining relevant, and assisting working people to win dignity at work. Hope you are fine. We have been analyzing the database of cases at the directory. Basic conclusions: the data is much better than we expected!. There is not "rubbish" (practically all the cases make quiet sense and there is not jokes or "spam" etc). Most of the cases have all the camps full filled. There is only some camps missing data or with problematic results (in concrete: license of the user content, e-mail/contact, social network accounts, and scope). We are full filling or correcting these missing data. In terms of variability of the directory, the database of cases is quiet rich and diverse. Still we identified some "limitations" in terms of areas that do not have cases or areas that are "over present" at the directory. We would like to ask your help to balance this - in order to enrich the directory per se and because it would be of help for us regarding the sample we are designing for the statistical analysis. Basically: * It has "too many" on FLOSS and P2P file sharing * The directory has a good bunch of cases on the areas of Collaborative writing, Collaborative research, Open science, Open education, and P2P economy. "No need" to add more cases on the above categories. But: Categories it would make the directory richer if adding more cases: * It would be good to add three or four cases on the areas of: Citizen media Collaborative video, audio, images Collaborative mapping Citizen science Open data commons Internet of things Open hardward/technology/Open design Collaborative archive Gaming communities * It would be good to add one more case in the areas of P2P currency, Urban commons, Collaborative spaces, Collaborative consumption, and peer funding. In total the directory has 335 cases. We have introduced more than half of them and do not have more ideas! Great if other partners can add more cases particularly in the direction we pointed above, or if not possible to add them directly at the directory, to send us the reference. (In terms of directory design (not the data in it) in our view, there is the need to review the directory (reducing the camps that are obligatory, making easier to identified if a case is already there etc). But David now has less disponibility for tecnical help in directory (would other partners be able to provide it?) and we from Barcelona are focus on the statistical analysis. So we ambition to do the review not now, but in some time, If other partners want to take the lead now in directory design improvements great!). Thanks. Cheers!
