Fwd: [members] Collaboration possibilities between OVN platform and P2Pvalue platform
by Michel Bauwens 24 Mar '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ignasi Capdevila <ignasi.capdevila(a)gmail.com> Date: Mon, Mar 24, 2014 at 8:47 AM Subject: [members] Collaboration possibilities between OVN platform and P2Pvalue platform To: P2PValue Project Members List <members(a)lists.p2pvalue.eu> Cc: Lynn Foster <foster.j.lynn(a)gmail.com>, Bob Haugen <bob.haugen(a)gmail.com>, Tiberius Brastaviceanu <tiberius.brastaviceanu(a)gmail.com>, Ishan Shapiro < ishanshapiro(a)gmail.com>, Yasir Siddiqui <yasir.siddiqui(a)gmail.com> Dear all, Few weeks ago, we had a conference call with some of the members of Sensorica. Sensorica defines themselves as: "an Open Value Network (OVN) of multidisciplinary professionals, amateurs and affiliated research labs, providing sensing and automation solutions" (source: http://www.sensorica.co/) Sensorica is a very interesting example of CBPP community (and open business model) specially because they are deeply involved in the implementation of an Open Value Network platform. Quickly explained, the goal of this platform is to compile the value created by each participant to later distribute the captured value (once the collaborative output is sold) equitably among the contributors, depending on their degree of implication (their theoretical work behind the OVNs is here: http://valuenetwork.referata.com/wiki/Main_Page) The main programmers of the OVN platform are Bob Haugen and Lynn Foster (both in CC). It is still in development, but some CBPP (like Sensorica or the Guerilla Media Collective - http://guerrillatranslation.com/ -) have already started to test it. As I have already discussed with some of you, I think that the P2Pvalue platform and the OVN platform have points in common that would be good to analyze together, even though the scope of the OVN might go beyond the P2Pvalue project. To study the collaboration possibilities between the two collaborative platforms (P2Pvalue & OVN platform), I propose to do a Google Hangout between members of both teams this week or next one. Please, if interested in participating, please fill in your availability in this Doodle: http://doodle.com/qg3dw6qmrtsgi8u8 Other info: The audio of the Google Hangout that we had with Sensorica is here (2-hour long): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UszIn_Vh_xw&feature=share And the full transcript of that meeting here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1bF6L8r5_5Fv6BJ5-7iMK9Nn8DzOQavDNp9HuN0z… Best regards, Ignasi -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

CAMRI Seminar: Jörg Becker on journalism and media/communication studies under Hitler and the example of Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann
by Christian Fuchs 24 Mar '14

24 Mar '14

CAMRI Seminar Jörg Becker: Journalism and media/communication studies under Hitler: The example of Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann University of Westminster Harrow Campus (tube stop: Northwick Park, Metropolitan Line) Wed, April 2, 2014 14:00-16:00 Room A6.08 http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/research-seminars/journalism-and-mediaco… Registration at latest until Monday, March 31, by e-mail to christian.fuchs(a)uti.at It is generally known that propaganda played a crucial role in Germany under Hitler. Concrete examples of journalism and media studies conducted during this time in Nazi Germany are however far less known and have hardly been analysed. In this talk, Jörg Becker sets out the context of media and communications in Nazi Germany and discusses the example of Elisabeth Noelle-Neumann, who during the Nazi time was both a media and public opinion researcher as well as a journalist. Noelle-Neumann (1916-2010) has internationally mainly become known in Media and Communication Studies for her approach of the spiral of silence. The role she played in National Socialism has long been a blind spot of research and public attention. New evidence shows that she was much more involved in different Nazi activities as publicly known. Her engagement with the Nazis had many consequences for the post World War II situation. Until the early 1950s the US Government refused to grant her an entry visa into the US but changed this negative attitude towards her when they changed their politics from anti-Fascism to anti-Communism. Inside Germany Noelle-Neumann's former Nazi-involvement had two different results after 1945: * With the support of her old Nazi network she was able to start her new privately owned Allensbach Institute for Public Opinion Research; * Old social-Darwinist and Nazi ideas from her 1940 PhD dissertation could survive in her book on the spiral of silence in 1980. In this talk, Jörg Becker analyses and uncovers the ideological underpinnings of a person who was an important part of and major influential figure in German and international Media and Communication Studies after 1945. Summary and review of Jörg Becker's German book about Noelle-Neumann: http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/article/view/489 Biography Professor Dr Jörg Becker has taught at the Departments of Political Science at the University of Marburg in Germany and the University of Innsbruck in Austria. He studied German, political science and pedagogy in Marburg, Bern and Tübingen and obtained his PhD in 1977 and his habilitation in 1981. In 1987 he became honorary professor at the University of Marburg. He held a Heisenberg scholarship of the German Research Foundation (DFG) from 1987 until 1992. His fields of teaching and research are international, comparative and German media-, communication and cultural studies, technology assessment, peace research. He has published numerous works in more than 10 languages. Example publications are the monograph “Communication and Conflict. Studies in International Relations. The scholarly book will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in September 2014 and here you may find a working draft of it. *We invite everybody to read and comment* on its contents by *i)* using the relevant discussion wikipages; and/or *ii)* sending a personal email: kostakis.b AT gmail.com. [edit<http://p2pfoundation.net/Network_Society_and_Future_Scenarios_for_a_Collabo…> ]Preface The aim of this book is not to provide another critique of capitalism; rather to contribute to the ongoing dialogue for post-capitalist construction and discuss how another world could be possible. We build on the idea that the peer-to-peer infrastructures are gradually becoming the general conditions of work, economy and society, considering peer production as a social advancement within capitalism but with various post-capitalistic aspects in need of protection, enforcement, stimulation and connection with progressive social movements. Using a four-scenario approach we attempt to simplify possible outcomes and explore relevant trajectories of the current techno-economic paradigm within and beyond capitalism. The first part of the book begins with an introduction (chapters 1 and 2) of the techno-economic paradigm shifts theory which sees capitalism as a creative destruction process. Such a dynamic, innovation-based understanding of economic and societal development arguably allows for an integral bird's-eye-view of future scenarios (chapter 3) within and beyond the dominant system. Sharing the conviction that the globalized economy is at a critical turning point, we describe the four future scenarios; namely, netarchical capitalism, distributed capitalism, resilient communities and global Commons. Netarchical and distributed capitalism (chapters 4 and 5) are parts of the wider value mode of cognitive capitalism and form, what we call, the mixed model of neo-feudal cognitive capitalism (chapter 6). On the other, the resilient communities (chapter 7) and the global Commons (chapter 8) reside in the hypothetical model of mature peer production under civic dominance. We postulate that the mature peer production communities pose a sustainable alternative to the capital accumulation, that of the circulation of the Commons. Hence, we make tentative transition proposals for the state, the market and the civic domain towards a Commons-based economy and society (chapter 9). Finally, we conclude with remarks and suggestions for future action. We have a guide with background information and suggested activities for local producers. It would be great that the p2p foundation can also add some activity. No need to invent something new, it may even be one of the activities that are promoted from the flok society in Ecuador or somewhere else. To: Marianna Pavlovskaya <mpavlov(a)hunter.cuny.edu> Dear all, See below -- Leticia is a graduate student in Brazil who is finishing a dissertation on the solidarity economy there -- among waste-picking families. She's interested in participating in a research interchange. If you have any ideas, please let her know. Her question makes me think, what graduate programs offer study of the solidarity economy? Marianna, your geography program at Hunter? Any others? In peace and solidarity, Julie ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: ledalpicolo . <le.dalpicolo(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Mar 20, 2014 at 9:35 AM Subject: Phd Student To: jmatthae(a)wellesley.edu Dear Professor Julie Ann, I´m a PhD Student of Psychology from Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil. I´m finishing my project and it will be basically about the social representation of solidarity economy (we can talk more about that another time). I finished my Master Course this year, also at UFSCar, in Science, Technology and Society, and the title of my dissertation is "Solidarity economy and family dynamics of recyclable waste pickers: a study of the research field science, technology and society". I basically studied about the influence of the principles of solidarity economy in the family dynamics of recyclable material pickers, in a local context, reflecting about the science and technology they had contactcin the co-operatives they work. I use the social psychology theory about work and relations. I didn´t do a gender analysis, but there´s a good content for analysis in this way, considering how the work can influence the life of the individual and how the individual can influence family dynamics. The relations between the couples became really more equalitarian. I used a qualitative method. I have been studing about Solidarity Economy since 2006, when I was coursing my undergraduate, also in Psychology (at Universidade Estadual Paulista - UNESP). My course conclusion paper was about the creation of a regional marketing network of recyclable waste pickers co-operatives and their advancement in the production chain of recyclable materials. Well, I´m telling you all these things because I´m thinking about the possibilitie of do an interuniversity exchange doctorate. I did a research looking for professors in the USA, I found you curriculum and really liked your research profile. My start idea is about make a comparison of the social representation of solidarity economy of the movement members from Brazil and from the USA, considering their historical and social context and reflecting on the influence of this factor in the representation of individuals. I´m already looking for informations about the universities in the world that I can do that, but I wanted to know if you and your college have interest in do that with me. Anyway, I would love to be a partnership in researches with you. I´m studing english again because I didn´t pratice it for a long time. I studied so much about local context and now I think it's time to researche how solidarity economy happens in other countries. There´s a great movement in Latin American, where there´s a lot of common contexts. In this way, I really apologize for the mistakes in my writing. Thank you for atention.
