Fw: Corruption Exposed
by robert searle 24 Jul '13

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: George Soros <info(a)georgesoros.com> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Wednesday, 3 July 2013, 16:43 Subject: Corruption Exposed Dear Friends and Colleagues: George Soros and the Open Society Foundations have long been advocates of greater transparency in the extractive industries. This article in the current issue of the New Yorker demonstrates why transparency is so crucial to the future of resource rich countries in the developing world. All best, Michael Vachon ~~~~ http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2013/07/08/130708fa_fact_keefe ~~~~ Press Release from the New Yorker How an Israeli Billionaire Wrested Control of One of Africa’s Biggest Prizes In the July 8 & 15, 2013, issue of The New Yorker, in “Buried Secrets” (p. 50), Patrick Radden Keefe investigates allegations that one of Israel’s richest citizens may have bribed African officials in order to obtain a prospecting license in Guinea and the riches that could result from it. “As wealthy countries confront the prospect of rapidly depleting natural resources, they are turning, increasingly, to Africa, where oil and minerals worth trillions of dollars remain trapped in the ground,” Keefe writes. Guinea is one of the poorest countries on the planet, but it possesses a bounty of natural resources—including vast iron-ore deposits buried inside a great, forested mountain range called Simandou— which are “worth a fortune.” For a while, it seemed that Anglo-Australian mining giant Rio Tinto was poised to profit, but in July, 2008, the company was abruptly stripped of its license by the Guinean government. Beny Steinmetz Group Resources, or B.S.G.R., was given the exclusive license to prospect half of the area, and they soon brought on Rio Tinto’s competitor, the mining company Vale. Steinmetz is the largest buyer of rough diamonds from De Beers, and has diversified his holdings into real estate, minerals, oil and gas, and other fields. Steinmetz is, according to some sources, the richest man in his native Israel, but despite his great wealth, he has “maintained an exceptionally low profile,” Keefe writes. “The Simandou contract was a surprising addition to Steinmetz’s portfolio, because B.S.G.R. had no experience exporting iron ore,” Keefe writes, and in Conakry, Guinea’s capital, “there were rumors that Steinmetz had acquired the concession through bribes.” Then, in 2010, several months after the Vale deal was announced, Guinea held its first fully democratic elections since independence. “The new President, Alpha Condé, had run on a platform of good governance and greater transparency in the mining sector. But as he took office he faced the possibility that Guinea’s most prized mineral asset may have been traded out from under the country. He could not simply void the contract.” Condé tells Keefe, “There is continuity of the state. I couldn’t put things back where they had been—unless I had right on my side.” Last October, Nava Touré, a former professor of engineering whom Condé had entrusted with running the technical committee on mines, “sent an incendiary letter to representatives of the joint venture between Vale and B.S.G.R., identifying ‘possible irregularities’ in the Simandou concession,” Keefe writes. The letter “accused B.S.G.R. of planning all along to flip the rights to Simandou, in order ‘to extract immediate and substantial profits.’ ” Condé’s government opened an inquiry into the license with the help of Scott Horton, an attorney at the U.S. law firm D.L.A. Piper, who has conducted dozens of corruption investigations around the world, and Steven Fox, who runs a risk-assessment company, in New York, called Veracity Worldwide. “But how do you prove corruption?” Keefe asks. “By its nature, corruption is covert; payoffs are designed to be difficult to detect.” Fox, however, soon located Frédéric Cilins, a tanned, gregarious Frenchman who had served as a scout for B.S.G.R. in Guinea, who told Fox tales of elaborate gifts made to Guinean officials and connections made through the then-dictator General Lansana Conté’s fourth wife. Documents purportedly signed by officials at B.S.G.R. promising Conté’s wife a stake in Simandou and two million dollars to be paid through a shell company were obtained by the Department of Justice, and Cilins was recorded, on a wiretap, offering to pay further bribes. Cilins was soon arrested and Steinmetz found himself in the middle of one of the largest corruption cases to ever come out of Africa. But the mysterious mogul maintains his innocence and the innocence of B.S.G.R. “I’m totally open—totally transparent,” Steinmetz tells Keefe in a rare interview. “I never lie, as a principle.” Steinmetz tells Keefe that the natural-resources business in Africa is “roulette”; if you work hard, and take risks, you sometimes “get lucky.” When Keefe asks Steinmetz how his company has dealt with the pervasiveness of corruption in Africa, Steinmetz tells Keefe that B.S.G.R. uses “very strict instructions and guidelines to people on the ground,” insisting that, even in jurisdictions that are notorious for graft, the company does not pay bribes. “We manage our business like the most transparent public company,” he tells Keefe. Steinmetz maintains that the documents obtained by the F.B.I. were forgeries, and he has waged a public-relations battle against the Guinean government and the nonprofit groups the government has enlisted to help investigate his company, several of which are connected to financier George Soros. The firm has sent angry letters to Soros, and elsewhere Steinmetz has claimed that Soros is “obsessed” with him. Meanwhile, civil unrest in Guinea threatens to unseat Alpha Condé before he has had the chance to implement his agenda. Guinea’s “iron ore remains locked inside the Simandou Mountains, and the site is still cut off from the rest of Guinea,” Keefe writes. Touré tells Keefe that he harbors a “feeling of shame” about the Guineans who may have accepted bribes. “Because, finally, what they have got personally—let’s say ten million U.S. dollars, twelve million U.S. dollars—what does that amount to? Compared with the lives of the whole country?” The “new international stampede for African resources could become another grim story, or it could present an unprecedented opportunity for economic development,” Keefe writes. “Everyone wants Simandou,” Condé tells Keefe. “Yet, in so many years, we haven’t been able to benefit from any of these tremendous resources. How can we be so rich and yet so poor?” ***Please do not hit "reply" to this email. Dear friends, I'm sure you are aware by now of the psy-ops that targetted the p2p foundation, and especially a manipulation of my mailbox. Fw: Shale Explosion Imminent
by robert searle 24 Jul '13

The Shale Exploision from the POV of investors!! RS. ----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Energy and Capital <eac-eletter(a)angelnexus.com> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Tuesday, 23 July 2013, 17:07 Subject: Shale Explosion Imminent x ________________________________ Forward to a Friend Having trouble viewing this issue? Click here. Refer a Friend to Energy and Capital. Shale Explosion Imminent By Keith Kohl | Tuesday, July 23rd, 2013 I'll confess that whenever I bring up oil production on the West Coast, it's usually to show how bad things can get. The steady decline of California's oil production has been painful to watch. In fact, the Golden State's oil industry has only managed to increase its annual production three times over the last 28 years. Believe me, nobody else in this country could use some good news more than California's oil industry. Well, they just might get their wish... That's right. For the first time ever, the state may be on the verge of turning things around. State of Denial Despite being a beacon for renewable energy in the United States, every last bit of green energy on the West Coast still hasn't managed to make much of a dent in the state's oil consumption. In fact, petroleum shipments to the West Coast area, also known as PADD 5, have been fairly consistent (click chart to enlarge): West Coast refineries have been receiving about three million barrels per day for the better part of three decades! Unfortunately, there's an even bigger issue here. Shipping that much crude out West is overshadowed by the declining quality of oil that makes up California's oil supply. That's mostly due to the fact that up until now, California has relied heavily on just one area, Kern County. Advertisement We Just Raised the Price Target for this Bakken Stock We were expecting a 153% gain for this small Bakken oil producer. That was before it announced a massive new land purchase that could send production screaming higher... Now we're upping the target for this $8 gem — to $26 a share.Your gains could be 314% in the next 12 months. Get the details here. ________________________________ Just to give you an idea of how important this county is to the state's oil output, consider the fact that Kern County accounted for approximately 73% of California's total production in 2011. In other words, if Kern County were its own state, it would be the fourth largest oil-producing state in the U.S. (and that would mean knocking the Golden State way down the list to tie with Wyoming at the No. 8 spot). Barring some unforeseen secession by Kern County residents, let's see how this area stacks against other California counties (click table to enlarge): Source: State of California Department of Conservation Now, as I mentioned earlier, there is a catch — and that's the quality of the oil coming out of Kern County. You see, we're taking about heavy crude here. The way we know this is through its API gravity. Simply put, the API gravity is used to show how heavy petroleum is compared to water: A rating of 10o or higher means it's lighter — and floats — on water, while anything less than 10o will sink. West Texas Intermediate, for example, carries an API gravity of about 39.6o. The light, sweet crude that flows out of North Dakota's Bakken wells is usually between 40-42o. Oil produced from the Kern River oil field, on the other hand, typically weighs in between 10-16o. Naturally, the heavier the oil, the costlier it is to refine. Venezuela's extra-heavy crude produced from the Orinoco Belt, for example, can have an API gravity as low as 4o. Not exactly ideal... Advertisement "Octopus" Drilling Technology 8 Times More Powerful than Horizontal Drilling This new technology will make America the most powerful oil and gas producing country in the world, toppling the mighty Saudi Arabia. In fact, this technology will double U.S. oil production to 11 million barrels per day. Most importantly, it will create a new wave of oil millionaires and billionaires over the next year... To get in on this opportunity, click here for full details. ________________________________ Crude Feuds While California oil companies are struggling to reverse the state's production decline, you'd expect to see others take advantage of it. As my readers are well aware, some states are having a much easier time boosting oil production... Last Friday, I explained how the renewed activity in the Permian Basin has helped spark a good, old-fashioned oil boom in Texas. Now those Texas producers are looking to tap into a California oil market beset with production problems. Kinder Morgan Energy Partners was recently looking to ship the light West Texas crude by building a pipeline that runs westward out of the Permian Basin. Once completed, the pipeline would handle 277,000 per day. However, Kinder Morgan's plans were scrapped in late May after a lack of interest from California refiners, who instead chose to receive that oil by trucks and railways. Essentially, putting the kibosh on the pipeline project would give them more flexibility to receive more California oil in the future. Could things finally be on the up and up for California's oil production? The truth is the key to its future success will be from more than just Kern County... The state may be on the verge of experiencing its very own shale boom in a relatively short period of time. This is a bet a few California oil companies are ready to make — with more than 15 billion barrels of recoverable crude at stake. It's what drove me to rush nearly 3,000 miles across the country recently. You see, I'm putting the finishing touches on my latest investment report that's targeting the brighter side of the California oil industry... Look for it to hit your email inbox on Thursday. Thank you James W. (and Pamela), these are very important questions, the difficulty lies indeed in finding the time and opportunity to rise above daily survival grinds ... an important announcement of the p2p foundation
by Michel Bauwens 23 Jul '13

23 Jul '13

Dear friends, This is an important announcement. We probably won't give more details than this, though some formal statement in our blog may be forthcoming. A sister organisation and the p2p foundation were victims of two 'psy-ops' that came in the form of forgeries and intrusion that resulted in the blocking and email deletions of strategic relationships in both skype and gmail. What had seemed communication flukes turned out to be willful disruptions. It seems that at least since December last year my gmail box has been manipulated (this is not a figment of our imagination, it's documented), resulting in serious harm. It seems the mailboxes are now safe, though I may eventually switch more systematically to p2pfoundation1(a)gmail.com. In the meantime, if you feel certain crucial communications were not replied to, feel free to resend, This is also an appeal for support. We need more technical support, and more financial support. Suggestions and assistance are welcome. Just as examples, I have to use a 6-year old computer with a broken keyboard, and cannot afford healthcare. When travelling abroad, I cannot afford to use my telephone. We could do a lot more with the right kind of support! Anyone concerned about our work and willing to support us in concrete ways, now is a good time! >important announcement. >We probably won't give more details than this, though some formal statement in our blog may be forthcoming. Shocking news, Michel. While I can appreciate your concern to limit how these events are described, it seems important for us to know whether they are the actions of a disaffected individual or a group, and if a group, then surely this should be identified. Longer term finance is a strategice issue, but If everyone reading here were to donate the cost of a couple of meals out with friends that might take you some way towards a better keyboard.
