an important announcement of the p2p foundation
by Michel Bauwens 29 Jul '13

29 Jul '13

Dear Denis, I'm giving details through Skype but right now still feel uncomfortable in creating more problems for the individual involved. The issue is the following, we do have a confession, but couched in terms of a personal problems and personality issues, but this only accounts for the issues covering the last 3 months; but I have evidence of much more nasty interventions dating back since december. Basically the technique was the following: during particular senstive emergencies, crucial requests would not get to me; this was incomprehensible for some partners, who saw all my online activity, and therefore were incredulous as to my explanation. This create hurt from two sides, the side that felt abandoned by me, and on my side, hurt about unjustified accusations. The original psy-op involved forgeries, usurped identities, fake meetings and a whole series of actions that make it very hard to believe that this could just be an individual without assistance. However, we do not have the means to verify this. Right now, I am looking at help to restore the integrity of the communications, for example how to restore blocked and filters I may not be aware of. On a personal level and to be frank, these are the issues I have to deal with: 1) healthcare: though I now have basic health insurance, lack of cash flow makes it impossible to use (prepayment), so I have not been able to go to a single doctor visit regarding a chronic prostate issue, and an asthmatic bronchitis I have caught in Europe. If my symptoms are not acute, my wife will resist doctor visits, as there are so many competing demands for our cash, and the kids get priority 2) tech infrastructure: my computer is old and decaying and can only be used by extra keyboard, which is inconvenient, my phone is help together by tape; when travelling, I can't use an android, do not have roaming and can exclusively use sms ... the effects of all this is that many small problems are hard to solve 3) cash flow issues mean i cannot react properly to emergencies, do not have a working credit card (problems when asked for guarantees for hotel rooms); for example, I have zero access to new books, unless I get review copies The problem is that once you are pushed into such a position, you are dealing with a lot of emergencies, making it difficult to look at things strategically My analysis from the recent psy-op is that someone understood this, and targetted communciations and cooperations that involved funding. Of course, many of these thigns are related to personality flaws, and I "should" do things better, but, I have my limits, and better support would really help. In particular: a basic income so I could afford healthcare, investment in new tech (computer, android that can serve as phone, roaming sub); and some emergency loan fund to occasionally prepay tickets (I usually refuse, but sometimes, it's really necessary). Right now, I and our little group are facing scaling issue, the interest is exploding, demands on our time is skyrocketing, and we should professionalize, but, are not successful yet in achieving this new phase. Arctic Emergency
by James Gien Varney-Wong 26 Jul '13

26 Jul '13

Hello fellow P2Ps, I'm just sharing some deeply disconcerting global news that affects us all. In case you haven't been watching the news, something very serious is happening in the world right now that affects every single human being. We are experiencing heat waves in Alaska and Siberia. Iff you know anything about the Arctics role in global warming, you would be frightened. http://robertscribbler.wordpress.com/2013/07/24/large-troubling-methane-pul… The dreaded permafrost methane pulses which cryosphere scientists have been warning us about are beginning to emerge from Russia. Look on the image on that page....yellow dots are measured methane outgassing. Peter Kershaw, an adjunct professor of earth sciences at the University of Alberta, who was in Churchill, Canada recently on a research project noted: "That organic material is being made available for decomposition. It’s out of the freezer and sitting on the counter.” So we are beginning to see permafrost thawing scenarios being reported all over the Arctic. This is the beginning of the large positive feedback loops that cryosphere scientists have been warning us about. Once we start the ball rolling, there's no way to stop it...we can only sit back and watch it unfold. Dr. Jennifer Francis explains it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tY0RdXmLGdU Basically, this is all happening in large part because the Arctic Ocean sea ice has almost completely melted. Lay people don't understand the significance of that. The temperature differential of air masses between equator and poles is what maintains a fast moving and low lattitudal amplitude jet stream. That temperature differential is significantly reduced due to the Arctic ice disappearing, which in turn causes the darker ocean to absorb more solar radiation. Dr. Francis explains that in 2012, the amount of solar radiation absorbed by the Arctic Ocean that was once sea ice amounts to enough energy to power the United States for 25 years. The smaller temperature gradient between pole and equator distorts the jet stream, making it wavier and slower moving. This additional waviness means it penetrates up into the Arctic. The slow speed means that high pressure domes form in the Arctic and stick around for a long time. This is the explanation of what happened with the unprecedented Greenland melt and also for Alaska reaching 36 Deg C on June 17, 2013...warmer temperatures than 48 states in the south. A paper was recently released in Nature Comment that estimated that if the Arctic releases a 50Gigaton pulse of methane, we will suffer 60 trillion USD of economic loss. To put that in perspective, our entire global economy is currently valuated at $70 Trillion USD. Pay attention to the news to see how much longer the heat wave persists, how many wildfires burn, how rapidly the Arctic sea ice is shrinking and for methane pulses as permafrost begins to thaw. Currently, anthropogenic CO2 emissions are a huge problem at 31.5 Gt/annum....the permafrost holds up to 1850 Gt. The atmosphere contains 850 Gt of Carbon. Methane hydrates under the shallow East Siberian Arctic Shelf could release many more gigatons as well if the undersea permafrost cap gives way. Robert Scribbers website above is a great resource for up-to-date news. You can also follow developments and the history of the events and cryosphere research on my Arctic / Antarctic page: http://ingienous.com/?page_id=8559 Today, human civilization has reached a rather sad milestone. I would say planet Earth has now reached an emergency situation with the Arctic and there's no more time to fool around. We need fast action on climate mitigation. Fw: List of contacts with whom communication was blocked
by Michel Bauwens 25 Jul '13

Dear Robert, we are working on the fundamental transformation of our society and such people and movements have always been targets and we have been connecting projects and activists across at least 3 continents, with people often telling me that our interventions were crucial. nobody else is talking in an integrative way about the profound changes in the modes of production and how various aspects are connected to each other, accompanied with a strategic vision; and those that are talking about partial developments are generally seeing this only as an add on to the existing system, not with a view on phase transition I can't talk about the other sister organisation that was similarly targeted, but so we are not alone, there is a pattern of intervention this was a rather systematic attack on the convergent networks for social change that are being built and that may one day be crucial in mobilizing society for change of course, it could also be a personal shakespearian drama, but given the extent of the manipulation, I find that increasingly hard to believe, Michel Message: 1 Date: Wed, 24 Jul 2013 11:14:27 +0100 (BST) From: robert searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Subject: [P2P-F] Fw: List of contacts with whom communication was blocked To: "p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org" <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Message-ID: <1374660867.44857.YahooMailNeo(a)web172202.mail.ir2.yahoo.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" ? Dear Nicolas, I see you have an idea where all of this is coming from .. until yesterday, I tried to limit the exposure of the culprit, but after seeing the extent of yaco's interventions in my mailbox this morning, i.e. more than 50 people's communication messed with over a fairly long time, and the harm that has done, I must admit I am now less and less charitable to what yaco has wrought ... there is a lot more to it than just the obvious tech sabotage, crucial funding opportunities did not come to fruition, for flimsy reasons, and I am increasingly sure this were no accidents, Michel Message: 3 Date: Tue, 23 Jul 2013 16:29:57 -0300 From: Nicol?s Reynolds <fauno(a)endefensadelsl.org> Subject: Re: [P2P-F] an important announcement of the p2p foundation To: p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org Cc: infraestructura(a)asambleas.partidopirata.com.ar, lab(a)hackcoop.com.ar Message-ID: <871u6pjcqy.fsf(a)endefensadelsl.org> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" at hacklab barracas and pirate party argentina we're happy to help regarding infrastructure (web, mail, etc), should i talk with yaco? :) -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Theorizing Digital Labour and Virtual Work: Definitions, Forms and Transformations To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org CfP: Philosophers of the World Unite! Theorizing Digital Labour and Virtual Work: Definitions, Forms and Transformations Special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: JULY 31, 2013 CfP: http://www.triple-c.at/index.**php/tripleC/announcement/view/**14<http://www.triple-c.at/index.php/tripleC/announcement/view/14> Supported by COST Action IS1202 “Dynamics of Virtual Work”-Working Group 3 “Innovation and the Emergence of New Forms of Value Creation and New Economic Activities“ (http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.**com<http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.com>, http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.**com/wg3/<http://dynamicsofvirtualwork.com/wg3/> ), tripleC (http://www.triple-c.at) Communication, Capitalism & Critique. Open Access Journal for a Global Sustainable Information Society. Editors: Marisol Sandoval, Christian Fuchs, Jernej A. Prodnik, Sebastian Sevignani, Thomas Allmer In 1845, Karl Marx (1845, 571) formulated in the 11th Feuerbach Thesis: “The philosophers have only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it”. Today, interpretation of the world has become an important form of labour that is expressed on and with the help of digital media. It has therefore become common to talk about digital labour and virtual work. Yet the changes that digital, social and mobile media bring about in the world of labour and work have thus far only been little theorized and theoretically interpreted. In order to change the information society to the better, we first have to interpret digital labour with the help of critical theories. Theorists of the world from different fields, backgrounds, interdisciplines, transdisciplines and disciplines have to unite for this collective philosophical task. The overall task of this special issue of tripleC: Communication, Capitalism & Critique is to gather contributions that help to an understanding of how to critically theorize digital labour, virtual work and related concepts. Theorizing digital labour requires us to provide grounded 1) definitions of digital labour and virtual work, 2) systematic distinctions and typologies of forms of digital labour and 3) theorizing the transformations that digital labour is undergoing. All submitted papers should be theoretical and profoundly engage with the meanings of various concepts. Rather than presenting case studies, papers should focus on fundamental theoretical concepts and discuss definitions. They can also explore the relations between concepts, the historical development of these concepts, typologies and the relevance of different theoretical approaches. The special issue is interested in theorizing the broader picture of digital labour. We welcome submissions that cover one or more of the following or related questions. 1) Concepts of Labour * How should concepts such of work and labour be defined and what are the implications of these definitions for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * Which theoretical or philosophical definitions of work and labour exist and which of them are meaningful for understanding virtual work and digital labour? * What is the difference between labour and digital labour? What is part of digital labour and what is not? Which online, offline, knowledge, physical, industrial, agricultural etc forms of work are part of it or not part of it? Is digital labour only knowledge labour that happens online or do we have to extend the concept to the offline realms and physical labour? Where is the demarcation line? Is digital labour also labour where digital technologies are of vast importance or not? Does digital labour involve the physical forms of work necessary for producing digital labour? * Is there a difference between 'work' and 'labour' and if so, how does it matter for the discussion of digital labour and virtual work? * What is the role of Karl Marx’ theory of labour and surplus value for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * Is the traditional distinction between the material base and superstructure in the realm of social media and digital labour still valid or does it become blurred or undermined? Are new information and communication technologies and social media, their production and use (n)either part of the base (n)or the superstructure or are they part of both? *If in the agricultural and industrial age land and nature have been the traditional objects of labour, how do the objects of labour and productive forces look like in the world of digital media and digital labour and how are these productive forces linked to class relations? * What is meant by concepts such as digital labour, telework, virtual work, cyberwork, immaterial labour, knowledge labour, creative work, cultural labour, communicative labour, informational work, digital craft, service work, prosumption, consumption work, online work, audience labour, playbour (play labour) in the context of digital media? How should they be defined? How are they related? How have they developed historically? How are these concepts related to the wider social context and the existing capitalist order? How can a systematic typology of the existing literature in this research field be constructed? Should any of these concepts be rejected? Why? Why not? Do any of these concepts especially matter? If so, why? * What is the etymological history of concepts such as work and labour in different languages and how have these concepts changed throughout history? Which of these historically different meanings are important for understanding digital labour and virtual work? * What are historically new aspects of digital labour, what are predecessors of digital work and which aspects of digital labour have parallels to the pre-digital era? * What is the role of the concept of value for understanding digital labour and virtual work as well as “immaterial” labour, affective labour, knowledge/communicative/**information work etc in the context of digital media? 2) Forms of Labour * What is the role of agricultural, industrial, service and knowledge work in the world of digital labour and how are they related? How are different modes of production related to each other in the world of digital labour? * What are the important dimensions for constructing a typology of work that takes place in online spaces (e.g. crowdsourcing, online gambling, gold farming, turking, microwork, production of and trade with virtual items, clickwork etc)? * How can a typology of alternative forms of online work that rejects the profit logic be constructed (e.g. free software development, creative commons and copyleft publishing, Wikipedia collaboration, peer-production, open access publishing, file sharing etc)? * Which forms of labour are involved in the global value chain of digital media, how do they differ from each other and how are they related (e.g. mining, hardware assemblage, call centre work, software engineering, transport labour, prosumer labour, e-waste labour etc)? 3) Transformations of Labour * How can blurring boundaries between toil and play, labour and leisure time, the factory and society, production and consumption, public and private, the sphere of production and reproduction, economic value and social wealth in the realm of digital media be conceptualized? * What is the relationship between creativity, participation, do-it-yourself culture on the one hand and exploitation, alienation and/or emancipation on the other hand? * What is the role of the concepts of the working class and the proletariat for theorizing digital labour? * How would the concepts of digital work and digital labour look like in a post-capitalist society? Does the post-capitalist end of the working class also mean the end of and abolition of digital work? Or just the end of digital labour? What are the anthropologically constant and the historically variable dimensions of productive human activities? How should they be conceptualized and named? How are they related to the realm of digital media? Do concepts such as anti-work, zerowork, the abolition of work, post-work and the right to be lazy take the anthropological, creative and productive aspects of human life that are expressed on digital media into account? What are the elements of digital media activities that will continue to exist in a post-capitalist society? What are the historically continuous and discontinuous elements of digital labour? * What has historically been the role of communications – including digital communications – in labour transformations and in the construction of global labour chains (e.g. global division of labour and social interdependencies; the concept of collective worker / Gesamtarbeiter; socialization of labour etc.)? Deadlines: Abstract submission: July 31, 2013 All abstracts will be reviewed and decisions on acceptance/rejection will be communicated to the authors at the latest by the end of summer 2013. Dear Elf, thanks for the update and offer of support, personally, I am mostly focused on tech solutions that enhance the use of our knowledge commons, for example, I believe two-column presentations significantly increase the usability of our wiki sections the possibility of combined section search, for example "give me all the Webcasts on Peerfunding", would greatly enhance findability our blog should be much more like the ECC platform blog, show more content in more categories, while also including social network and forum possibilities so that we can move away from the private Ning integration of the various resources into each other: i.e. twitter / scoop.it streams into our blog ; and clean wiki updates to our blog, and blog updates into our wiki ... imagine topic sections, with the wiki section, the blog section, and social bookmarking tags integrated ... Indeed just about all worthwhile reform will appear, and be difficult to achieve. But is this a reason to cower back from working for real and lasting change? Just the opposite! The process of being human requires doing the right thing. You are invited to join the American Monetary Institute in this effort. Please do recirculate and forward this message to your email contacts if you wish. A July 4th message to friends of the American Monetary Institute, Dear Fellow Americans, and friends around the Earth, This 4th of July, as we have proudly celebrated our declaration of independence from the tyranny of a mad Brit King, lets remember the victory a small group of dedicated, courageous men and women achieved against the world's most powerful military of their time. It was a victory that appeared extremely improbable at best, as they pledged their lives and fortunes to fight for its success. And as events and battles were fought, the possibility of a favorable outcome grew even smaller. But at the right moment, help from France turned the tide and the British were defeated. Defeated militarily, but not monetarily. For soon after the Constitution was ratified, in 1791 the 1st Bank of the United States, a privately owned and privately controlled central bank was put through Congress by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton, modeled on the private Bank of England. The gang around that bank were more dangerous than King George the 3rd; and the Hamilton people thereby insinuated into the New World forces representing the most evolved secular form that evil had attained in the Old World. Thanks a lot Hamilton! (Folks all it takes to screw up our nation and end up with what we have now, is to follow and promote Hamilton's views.) Jefferson fought the bank, helping to bring it down and Burr killed Hamilton over public insults; but using bank debt for money had gained a foothold in America. It's still here, in control of our monetary system. It's the root cause of most of our social and economic problems, and regularly plunges us into a crisis! Whenever it caused crises in the past, our government has had to come to the rescue. It's latest atrocity is the current monetary, banking and economic crisis, that has brought pain and hardship to millions of our people! It still threatens to take the entire world economy down into depression, and destroy the lives of billions of people in the process. Isn't this the right time to work to end it? This crisis gives us our only opportunity to reform our monetary system and to eliminate using debt as the basis for money. To absolutely eliminate the privilege banks have to create our money supply when they extend loans, That is the key. Its easy to do that with simple bank accounting rule changes, studied and known for decades. Those trying to block reform - for whatever sick reason always assert that credit/debt money is a beneficial thing, and necessary. It is not! Today they pretend to agree with reform, but argue it would be too difficult to achieve. Don't fall for that! The most recent example of the needed changes were formulated by Congressman Dennis Kucinich in 2011 when he introduced into the 112th Congress - the N.E.E.D. Act, the National Emergency Employment Defense Act; HR 2990. This was derived from the American Monetary Act of our Institute. See a description, and videos at http://www.monetary.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/HR-2990.pdf The American Monetary Institute has published its research results in the book The Lost Science of Money (drawn from a study of over 800 monetary books and sources). The first 23 chapters focus on the monetary case studies from Aristotle forward. Then Chapter 24 summarizes what those studies teach us and how that can be applied to solving today's dilemma. The American Monetary Act puts that plan into legislative form. See http://www.monetary.org HR2990 fundamentally reforms the CREDIT/DEBT system now wrecking our nation, replacing it with a government MONEY system. It will solve about 80% of the problems our country faces. The Green Party decided to support the key elements of that Act in recent years. You see, just about ALL the reforms the Greens want are both worthy, AND difficult to accomplish - so most Greens are not so easily scared away by BS about "you'll never succeed!" How does HR 2990 work? The Federal Reserve becomes incorporated into the U.S. Treasury. Banks no longer have the accounting privilege of creating our money supply. All their previously issued credit is converted into U.S. Money through an elegant and gentle accounting change, which has been described as brilliant by a former officer of the NY Fed. The banks are held accountable for this conversion. New money is then introduced by the government spending it into circulation for infrastructure, starting with the $2.2 trillion the engineers tell us is needed to properly maintain our infrastructure over the next 5 years.Infrastructure will include the necessary human infrastructure of health care and education. Banks are encouraged to continue lending as profit making companies, but are no longer allowed to create our money supply through their loan making activity. Quite simply, they have to loan money, not debt. Thus, The American Monetary Act nationalizes the money system, not the banking system. Banking is not a proper function of government, at any level, but providing the nation’s money supply is a key function of government. No one else can do it properly. Any questions - don't hesitate to ask. Really. Despite modern day prejudice against government, most people are surprised to learn that history shows government has a far superior record in controlling the money system than private controllers have. And yes that includes the continental currency, the Greenbacks and even the German Hyperinflation; which by the way took place under a completely privatized German central bank! (See The Lost Science of Money book) Each September (19th - 22nd in 2013) we hold a monetary reform conference at University Center in Chicago where advanced monetary researchers and activists present talks on monetary reform. We will extend the June 21st Discount ($285 instead of $395) for registrations made in the next few days by telephone to 224-805-2200. Take a look at the speakers brochure now at http://www.monetary.org/2013schedule.html I mentioned that the French played a key part at the start of our nation. Today their gift to us of the Statue of Liberty still plays a crucial role for us and for humanity. The liberty she symbolizes does not exist in our nation. It never really has. The Statue has always been a symbol encouraging us towards the possible. I love that statue and when I stayed in New York, I often anchored under it, and some of my fondest memories are of those times as the sun set over New Jersey, still reflecting off the Twin Towers; or anchored under the spectacular fireworks display there during the bicentennial celebration. Friends, we are all under pressure in this environment. Stress will cause illness unless you act. Action will destroy fear! Good action towards truth will change the world. Join with us to understand the nature of our money system, how it should be structured and how we citizens can effect such change. Thats what our country's founders would be doing now if they were of our time. Thats what men and women of good will, can be doing now! Please support The American Monetary Institute, organized in 1996 as a publicly supported charitable trust and help us in our educational work with our fellow Americans on this crucial problem. Thanks for your attention. I hope you have had a good Fourth of July! Stephen Zarlenga AMI "Over time, whoever controls the money system controls the nation."
