Israel as Zomia?
by Kevin Carson 16 Mar '12

16 Mar '12

This suggests to me that the Israelite amphictyony may have actually been people from the settled areas of Canaan -- the Canaanites, Israelites, Moabites, Edomites, Midianites and other Western Semitic peoples were really a Greater Hebrew nation -- who voted with their feet and migrated into less governable areas of the central Palestinian highlands. And they recuperated the Canaanite El cultus at Bethel and adapted it to their own needs. This would make them a lot like Scott's Zomians, or the Tinkers, Travellers and Cossacks. -- Kevin Carson Research Associate, Center for a Stateless Society http://c4ss.org "You have no authority that we are bound to respect" -- John Perry Barlow "We are legion. Limits to P2P Fundraising
by David Alan Foster 12 Mar '12

12 Mar '12

I have a friend who needs to raise $25 million to buy a bank to call it the first Good Bank to create a transparent bank to change the paradigm to change the world. Question: How MIGHT it be possible to raise a buck from $25 million people? Over $1 million for one product has now been raised on Kickstarter. Now Kickstarter is being significant enough to attract scrutiny from the SEC and IRS… and probably more. What are the ways that much larger amounts could be raised "legally" by a grassroots group. Could a nonprofit receive this amount -- believing it's somehow possible -- and donate or invest it in the Good Bank?… or some similarly compelling project or projects? Who is pushing the envelope here? By the way, check out what Sahil Lavingia is doing with his new venture Gumroad.com. Thanks, David

Hackerbus: First Tour Dates: Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal
by Moritz Bartl 11 Mar '12

11 Mar '12

Hi! tl;dr: I will tour Europe with video/audio equipment and want to meet all sorts of P2P activists. Tour starts in one week. I hope to get your help to locate interesting people, places and events. Long version, today's announcement: http://www.hackerbus.eu/blog/2012/03/11/first-tour-dates-switzerland-france… I am excited to finally announce the beginning of my tour! As a reminder, the Hackerbus serves as a “framework” for documenting modern forms of living and working: It carries professional equipment for high quality movie making, taking pictures, recording interviews – whatever you and me make out of it! There is no way for me to do this alone, and it is unlikely to find someone to tour with me the whole year. While I do have some ideas about what to visit, I don’t want to constrain this tour too much, to be open for all kinds of suggestions and detours. I hope you understand that for this reason I can only give you a very rough schedule. Please contact me if you know people and places I should come visit! * from March 18th, 2012: Switzerland * April 2012: Southern France, Spain * May 2012: Portugal, Northern France Some of the equipment: * Panasonic Lumix GH2 with 14-42mm and 20mm lenses * Rode NTG-2 shotgun microphone * Zoom H4N audio recorder * >10 TB storage * last not least: a van with several spare seats and a bed etc. What do you get from inviting me? Many of you know me as the founder of Torservers.net. Apart from the obvious offer to get your message out on video, I am very interested to talk about communication security (proper use of PGP, Tor etc), apocalyptical thinking as philosophical discipline, and community building. In preparation I was not as organized as I could have been, but hey – we’re all in it for the fun! ;-) Please don’t be mad at me if you have already contacted me and never heard back. Ping me again! Stay tuned for more updates soon. Now is a good time to add the RSS feed to your reader and follow me on Twitter. http://www.hackerbus.eu/feed http://www.twitter.com/hackerbus -- Moritz Bartl @gamamb http://www.hackerbus.eu/ https://www.torservers.net/

Production as an exercise in empathy
by Karl Robillard 09 Mar '12

09 Mar '12

Seung Chan Lim has written a book titled "Realizing Empathy: An Inquiry into the Meaning of Making". His idea is that production is fundamentally an exercise in empathy and not about innovation or creativity. He's just finished a successful kickstarter project to fund the printing and is trying to build a community around this idea. http://realizingempathy.com/ http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/800798301/realizing-empathy-an-inquiry- into-the-meaning-of-m -Karl

Fw: What Are Economists For? Associate! March 2012
by robert searle 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Associative Economics Bulletin <ame(a)cfae.biz> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Wednesday, 7 March 2012, 22:03 Subject: What Are Economists For? Associate! March 2012 Is this email not displaying correctly? Click here to view in your browser. What are Economists for? Associate! March 2012 This issue concerns the state of economics as a discipline, the way the subject is taught, and the general aptness or otherwise of its practitioners. The complaint that economics is not fit for purpose is an old one, yet when we last covered this ground in September 2009 it was primarily confined to heterodox circles. The difference now is that virtually no one, from the Queen to the governor of the Bank of England, thinks that economics is fit for purpose. Symptomatic of the seriousness of people’s concerns is a recent conference hosted by the Bank of England*, attended by one of our editors, Arthur Edwards. Much of this issue derives from that gathering. In the lead piece Eclectic Economics, John Kay goes for the jugular by identifying the fatal flaw of the modelling approach. No matter how good the model it remains just that ‘a potentially illuminating abstraction’, when what is needed is ‘pragmatic thinking, employing many tools’. Sign of Our Time highlights the importance of two character traits by which economists are not generally known: humility and passion. It’s author,David Colander, also advocates a boots-on-the-ground idea rather than the one-curriculum-fits-all approach in place today. The feature item is a report by Arthur Edwards that gives the mood of the Bank of England seminar while pointing to how different things might look were an associative approach taken to education in economics. The AEX pages comprises a comment on the Greek debt crisis and a review of Re-assessing the Paradigm of Economics by LSE’s Valeria Mosini, very apt in the light of this issue’s overall theme. Accounting Corner rounds the theme of this edition off with a reflection on accounting in the same spirit. * ‘What Post-Crisis Changes Does the Economics Discipline Need? Fw: The Syrian people's gift to us
by robert searle 08 Mar '12

08 Mar '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Ricken Patel - Avaaz.org <avaaz(a)avaaz.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Wednesday, 7 March 2012, 18:15 Subject: The Syrian people's gift to us Dear friends, Powered by millions of online actions and donations from 75,000 of us, our community is playing a central role in supporting the Syrian people as they persist in peaceful protest against all odds. Together, we're empowering citizen journalism, smuggling in medical supplies and western journalists, and much more. We're making a difference, but the staggering bravery of the Syrian people is their gift to the rest of us. Read this email for the full story, or look at this recent media coverage of Avaaz's work on Syria: BBC, CNN, El Pais, TIME, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, AFP. This morning, 4 western journalists are home safe with their families, the echoes of the horror and heroism of Baba Amr still ringing in their ears. Over 50 Syrian activists, supported by Avaaz, volunteered to rescue them and scores of wounded civilians from the Syrian army’s killzone. Many of those incredible activists have not survived the week.Abu Hanin is one of the heroes. He’s 26, a poet, and when his community needed him, he took the lead in organizing the citizen journalists that Avaaz has supported to help the voices of Syrians reach the world. The last contact with Abu Hanin was on Thursday, as regime troops closed in on his location. He read his last will and testament to the Avaaz team in Beirut, and told us where he had buried the bodies of the two western journalists killed in the shelling. Since then, his neighborhood of Baba Amr has been a black hole, and we still don’t know his fate. It’s easy to despair when seeing Syria today, but to honour the dead, we must carry forward the hope they died with. As Baba Amr went dark and fears of massacre spread, Syrians took to the streets -- yet again -- across the country, in a peaceful protest that showed staggering bravery.Their bravery is our lesson, the gift of the Syrian people to the rest of us. Because in their spirit, in their courage to face the worst darkness our world has to offer, a new world is being born. And in that new world, the Syrian people are not alone. Millions of us from every nation have stood with them time and time again, right from the beginning of their struggle. Nearly 75,000 of us have donated almost $3 million to fund people-powered movements and deliver high-tech communications equipment to help them tell their story, and enable the Avaaz team to help smuggle in over $2 million worth of medical supplies. We’ve taken millions of online actions to push for action from the Security Council and the Arab League and for sanctions from many countries, and delivered those online campaigns in dozens of stunts, media campaigns and high-level advocacy meetings with top world leaders. Together we’ve helped win many of these battles, including for unprecedented action by the Arab League, and oil sanctions from Europe. Our team in Beirut has also provided a valuable communications hub for brave and skilled activists to coordinate complex smuggling operations and the rescue of the wounded and the journalists. Avaaz does not direct these activities, but we facilitate, support and advise. We have also established safe houses for activists, and supported the outreach and diplomatic engagement of the Syrian National Council -- the opposition movement’s fledgling political representative body. Much of the world's major media have covered Avaaz’s work to help the Syrian people, including features on BBC, CNN, El Pais, TIME, The Guardian, Der Spiegel, AFP and many more, citing our "central role" in the Syrian peaceful protest movement.Today, a dozen more nightmares like that visited on the city of Homs are unfolding across Syria. The situation will get worse before it gets better. It will be bloody, and complicated, and as some protesters take up arms to defend themselves, the line between right and wrong will blur. But President Assad’s brutal regime will fall, and there will be peace, and elections, and accountability. The Syrian people simply will not stop until that happens -- and it may happen sooner than we all think.Every expert told us at the beginning that an uprising in Syria was unthinkable. But we sent in satellite communications equipment anyway. Because our community knows something that the experts and cynics don’t -- that people power and a new spirit of citizenship are sweeping our world today, and they are fearless, and unstoppable, and will bring hope to the darkest places. Marie Colvin, an American journalist covering the violence in Homs, told Avaaz before she died, "I’m not leaving these people." And neither will we.With hope, and admiration for the Syrian people and courageous citizens everywhere,Ricken, Wissam, Stephanie, Alice, David, Antonia, Will, Sam, Emma, Wen-Hua, Veronique and the whole Avaaz teamP.S.
