----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Donald Vreeland <dutchvreeland(a)yahoo.com> To: Donald Vreeland <dutchvreeland(a)yahoo.com> Sent: Tuesday, 27 March 2012, 21:37 Subject: [Radical Economics] February, 2012, Employment Numbers The website www.bls.gov released the February, 2012 U. S. employment numbers on 8 March, 2012. I directly quote the numbers in my website and then comment. Note that nearly 42% of the employable U. S. population is not working, not 8.3% of the official rate or about 17% more inclusive unemployment rate (unverifiable). Furthermore, the number of full time workers could increase byover 114% which in real numbers is over 126 million people idle or working part time. Also only 36.2% of the whole population work full time and about 1/5th of all workers are part time. This notes tremendous slack in U. S. economy. Further, I include the changes from the last post of this site. www.bls.gov For those who haven't read it, the sections "Further Discussions" are short works of only a few paragraphs. http://explode.freeshell.org.htm My main economic reform treatise is: http://explode.freeshell.org/econ.html It scares me to claim that I've solved poverty with the reform - sounds too arrogant to say (that). Read my site and decide. Regards, dv. BLOGS TOP NEWS EVENTS GROUPS PROJECTS 2nd E+SM Eblast When you support the Evolver Social Movement (E+SM), you play an integral role in accelerating a planetary transformation by spreading a new awareness of our collective, creative potential. E+SM provides a voluntary infrastructure for 40+ local communities around the world who come together in live events. E+SM raises consciousness and proposes practical solutions to the problems we face in areas that include ecological design, bioremediation, currency, agriculture, psychology, health, and the media. Our vision is bold: As we cooperate to supersede outmoded beliefs and institutions, we will build a thriving, peaceful world that satisfies our inherent desire for justice and beauty. While many feel fearful or pessimistic about the future, we propose that humanity stands on the cusp of a global renaissance as we meld the technical genius of the mind with the intuitive wisdom of the heart. We believe that the time is now for humanity to overcome the inertia of the past and realize our highest potential. 2012 is the end of the 5,125 year long count calendar of the classic Maya. With one of the warmest winters on record, civil unrest spreading across the planet, continuing corporate assault on the environment, and a resurgence of the Occupy movement despite government crackdowns, this year represents an extraordinary threshold of awakening and transformation. Unlike any other organization in the world, E+SM meshes a realization of the multidimensional nature of the psyche with a design science approach to solving the social, economic, and environmental crises we face as a species. Fw: Rudolf Steiner / Maynard Keynes

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Associative Economics Bulletin <ame(a)cfae.biz> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Tuesday, 27 March 2012, 20:31 Subject: Rudolf Steiner / Maynard Keynes Associative Economics: Rudolf Steiner / Maynard Keynes Is this email not displaying correctly? Click here to view in your browser. 27 Mar, 2012 15:46 Age: 5 hrs Rudolf Steiner / Maynard Keynes Builders of a World Economy - with Christopher Houghton Budd, PhD. The aim of this workshop is to explore the possibility that today’s economic life is more autonomous than we think, and to see if the supposed gulf between current realities and what Rudolf Steiner had in mind is as wide as we sometimes believe. At the end of the First World War, Rudolf Steiner described how the Anglo-American community would dominate social life for a hundred years through an economics seemingly devoid of spirit. But he also said the same people had the talents to do the opposite. Now we are nearing the end of that time, what is the situation? Steiner said this in the context of his conception of society as having three independent yet coordinated spheres, each with its own modality of governance – an idea strongly resisted then and ever since. And yet, the world economy is now dominated by the IMF, the World Bank and the WTO, a fact that shows that the principle of economic self-governance, far from being strange, is the basis of modern economic life. Except that the way these institutions are understood disguises the deeper possibility Steiner pointed to. On the other hand, prior to their birth in 1944 they were conceived by one of their main architects, the British economist John Maynard Keynes, as something other than they became. Not as instruments of foreign policy but as the organs of a world economy. In this sense, can Keynes be seen as giving practical expression to what Steiner hoped for? Fw: Deceased: China's Rare Earth Monopoly
by robert searle 27 Mar '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Energy and Capital <eac-eletter(a)angelnexus.com> To: dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk Sent: Tuesday, 27 March 2012, 17:05 Subject: Deceased: China's Rare Earth Monopoly ________________________________ Forward to a Friend Having trouble viewing this issue? Click here.Refer a Friend to Energy and Capital. Deceased: China's Rare Earth Monopoly By Nick Hodge | Tuesday, March 27th, 2012 Last week Molycorp (NYSE: MCP) bought Neo Material (TSX: NEM) for $1.3 billion. The deal was heralded as a “rare earth game-changer.” Here's why... If you remember, China controls more than 90% of the world's supply of rare earth metals critical for production of advanced motors, batteries, weaponry, and electronics. You can find rare earths in Apple's iPads, Research in Motion's BlackBerrys, Chevy's Volt, Toyota's Prius, and Raytheon's Tomahawk missiles. Prices for those metals soared in 2010 after China imposed export quotas, and any company calling themselves a rare earth miner climbed hundreds to thousands of percent. A chart of Molycorp looked like this between its IPO in July 2010 and May of last year: Then the steep run-up in prices coupled with continued fears of a global economic slowdown caused companies to cut their use of the metals... Demand plummeted, taking rare earth prices along with it. >From spring 2011 through last week, Molycorp lost 68% of its share value and $4 billion of its market cap. Most other rare earth companies shared a similar fate. Demand dippedso low that China only shipped 60% of its export quota last year. Now lower rare earth prices and an uptick in automotive and electronics sales are starting to revive demand. But Molycorp still had a problem... Advertisement New Discovery Could Soon Hand You Free Electricity Not long ago, a small tech firm announced the scientific breakthrough of a lifetime. It created an extremely thin "spray on" film, capable of generating electricity on virtually ANY surface. Before this marvel turns every home in America into its own power plant, click here to see rare footage, detailing the whole story and how it could — very soon — compound your wealth. ________________________________ Light on the Processing There are two kinds of rare earths: light and heavy. Last year, about 60% of Molycorp's sales came from light rare earths like lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, and neodymium. With control of the 2,220-acre Mountain Pass mine in California that once met nearly all the world's demand for light rare earths, Molycorp needed a way to access the heavy side of the business. It also needed a way to get into the downstream processing side of the business. Rare earths need lots of refining before they can be used in motors and electronics, and Molycorp didn't have that ability. Their purchase of Neo Material gives them a bit of both — and shares of both companies surged on the acquisition news. Reuters called the $1.3 billion deal a “rare earth game-changer” that would make Molycorp a “one-stop rare earth shop,” noting: The bid for Neo will give it cutting-edge processing technology, expand its product portfolio and provide valuable magnetic alloy patents. The move could also silence some of the criticism the U.S. company faces for being overly reliant on lower-value light rare earths like cerium and lanthanum. The deal is strategic for Neo too, which, faced with dropping margins on feedstock costs in China, will gain a secure supply of raw materials. As Byron Capital Markets noted, “Neo can do more business with Molycorp material than they can begging for Chinese feedstock.” After the announcement, shares of Molycorp climbed 19% in a day, the most since going public. Shares of Neo Material climbed 37% after the news. The deal also sparked rumors that other rare earth acquisitions could be coming — and shares of Rare Element Resources (AMEX: REE) and Quest Rare Minerals (AMEX: QRM) climbed about 20%, while Lynas (PK: NYSCF) ticked up about 10%. The rare earth industry has been a soap opera for the past two years, creating many new millionaires in the process. And now, another rare resource battle is brewing that could deliver even more profits... Advertisement "Natural Gas can reduce fuel costs as much as 40 percent, based on gasoline at $3.50 a gallon." — Bloomberg, 3/7/12 Now meet the company that will supply nearly all of this cheap natural gas... — Click Here — ________________________________ The Next Rare Earth I want to show you just the first question and answer of a recent interview with Jack Lifton, Senior Fellow at the Institute for the Analysis of Global Security. Reporter: In the last five years, investors discovered lithium and the rare earths. What will be the next big thing? Jack Lifton: The answer is graphite. Graphite has traditionally been considered a boring, mundane industrial mineral, evoking thoughts of pencils, golf clubs and tennis racquets. Investors should think again. Traditional demand for graphite in the steel and automotive industries is growing 5% annually, and graphite prices have tripled. New applications such as heat sinks in computers, lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells, and nuclear and solar power are all big users of graphite. These consumers are beginning to place substantial demands on existing production — and over 70% of that production is from China, which is no longer selling this resource cheaply to the rest of the world as the country’s easy-to-mine, near-surface deposits are becoming exhausted. Graphite’s criticality and potential scarcity has been recognized by both the United States and the European Union, which have each declared graphite a supply-critical mineral. Recently, the British Geological Survey ranked graphite right behind the rare earths and substantially ahead of lithium in terms of supply criticality. Clearly, there is much more to graphite than pencils. I firmly believe graphite miners are about to experience the thousand-percent run-ups witnessed by rare earth companies over the past few years... But there's only a handful to choose from, and you need to start staking out your position now. My latest free report shows you why graphite is the next hot resource — and how you can position yourself to profit from it today. Take a few minutes to watch it before the rest of the world comes running. Fw: Celebrating the Signals of Deep Systemic Transformation

Celebrating the Signals of Deep Systemic Transformation As we look to transform our economic and financial systems to support a more just and restorative economy, we at Capital Institute are aware of how much we have to learn from observing the resiliency of natural systems. And the more we learn about the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council project as we undertake the research for our upcoming Field Guide study, the more we observe parallels between it and what ecologists call an “ecotone.” An ecotone is a transitional zone between contrasting habitats–a forest and a grasslands, for example–where tremendous creative destruction, rich biodiversity, and continuous ecosystem rebalancing known as “the edge effect” occur. But, as Bill Reed, one of the founders of the restorative development movement, explains: “Edges are about more than simply re-balancing—they are about increased potential of relationship and exchange. The possibility of life happens at edges; edges are the bridge and arbiter of relationships—the more edges we have, the richer the potential to improve the resilience of life.” We have come to see the CMRC as just such a vital “bridge,” in this case between the old industrial paradigm and an emerging one where advanced manufacturing will play a central role. Fw: Erik Berglöf - Crisis in Eastern Europe: The People's Perspective

Erik Berglöf - Crisis in Eastern Europe: The People's Perspective The global economic and financial crisis hit Eastern Europe harder than anywhere in the world. The region was shut off from global financial flows essentially overnight and some Eastern European countries lost a staggering 20% of GDP in one year. What does such a large loss in economic output do to the average household? The latest Transition Report of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) provides some worrying answers. As Erik Berglöf explains in this INET interview, the crisis in combination with loose social safety nets forced people in Eastern Europe to cut down on food expenses and limit visits to doctors. The report, entitled “Crisis in Transition: The People's Perspective,” contains more than numbers on economic and social conditions; the report is also informed by over 38,000 interviews that tell us how people in Eastern Europe think about the world. And what is striking, Berglöf says, is that while support for markets and democracy survived the crisis, people are dissatisfied with the state of healthcare and education systems. This and more in the INET interview with Erik Berglöf. Berglöf is the EBRD’s Chief Economist and a member of the INET Governing Board. http://www.wired.com/threatlevel/2012/03/ff_nsadatacenter/all/1 The Utah Data Center is being built for the National Security Agency. Its purpose: to intercept, decipher, analyze, and store vast swaths of the world’s communications. Flowing through its servers and routers and stored in near-bottomless databases will be all forms of communication, including the complete contents of private emails, cell phone calls, and Google searches, as well as all sorts of personal data trails—parking receipts, travel itineraries, bookstore purchases, and other digital “pocket litter.” The mammoth Bluffdale center will have another important and far more secret role that until now has gone unrevealed. It is also critical for breaking codes. The NSA made an enormous breakthrough several years ago in its ability to break unfathomably complex encryption systems employed by not only governments around the world but also many average computer users. The upshot, according to a former NSA official: “Everybody’s a target; everybody with communication is a target.”
