Fw: What's Wrong With the Debt Debate
by robert searle 04 Jan '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: John Fullerton <jfullerton(a)capitalinstitute.org> To: Robert Searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Tuesday, 3 January 2012, 23:00 Subject: What's Wrong With the Debt Debate To forward this email, click here. What's Wrong With the Debt Debate by John Fullerton This former banker, and now sustainability investor and humble blogger, will not offer grand predictions for 2012. Forecasting in a world of rising uncertainty suggests a lack of understanding about uncertainty. Instead, inspired by my holiday reading, Debt: The First 5000 Years by anthropologist David Graeber, I will take up the debate about the debt, and offer an uncomfortable third view: jubilee (in some form) is inevitable. The debt debate as it rages on can be summarized as the “Krugman view” versus the “austerity view” (the latter having too many advocates both at home and in Europe to associate it with a person). The less popular Krugman view rests on a belief in Keynesian economics (“Keynes was Right") that governments must increase deficit spending during slumps, and then tighten the spigot during booms, providing an automatic stabilizer to the economy. Failing to do so in times like the present turns recessions into depressions. This view rejects the analogy of government finances to household finances, since governments can, and do, print money. Krugman points to long-term interest rates in the United States and Japan being at historic lows as vindication that the market says he’s right — markets understand deficits don’t matter in the short run (at least when a country issues debt in its own currency). Read more at the Future of Finance Blog. Talking about the Future of Manufacturing with Mike Locker After having been written off as a declining, noncompetitive sector, manufacturing is now rising on the radar screens of American policymakers, social justice advocates, and a new breed of environmentalists who see it as both a catalyst for economic revival and as offering the solutions to many of our ecological and societal ills. Last week, as part of our research for the upcoming Field Guide to Investing in a Resilient Economy study on the Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council project and the organization that supported its creation, The Center for Labor and Community Research, we visited with Mike Locker at his offices near Zuccotti Park. Mike is a long-time advisor to manufacturers and labor on corporate restructuring and buyouts, serves on the board of the CLCR, and has worked closely with Dan Swinney, the visionary behind both the CLCR and the CMRC. “We have to do manufacturing more productively and more sustainably,” Mike said. “We must do it in a way that does not contribute to environmental disaster but in a way that contributes to environmental success. There has to be good pay and benefits associated with it. We are now at the outer limits of the reconstitution and reconfiguration of what we mean by manufacturing. It is an exciting time.” Read more at This Week at Capital Institute. What We're Reading In his new book Debt: The First 5000 Years, anthropologist David Graeber shows that for more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods—that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors. Debt: The First 5,000 Years Quote of the Week “We might summarize our present human situation by the simple statement: In the 20th century, the glory of the human has become the desolation of the Earth. And now, the desolation of the Earth is becoming the destiny of the human. From here on, the primary judgement of all human institutions, professions, and programs and activities will be determined by the extent to which they inhibit, ignore or foster a mutually enhancing human-Earth relationship.” -Thomas Berry To unsubscribe from this email list, click here. 73 Arch Street, 3rd Floor Greenwich, CT 06830 United States

"The Future of Occupy" is published!
by George Por 03 Jan '12

03 Jan '12

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE For several months, during the unfolding events of the Occupy movement, supporters, media and world observers have been wondering, where is this movement heading?' To help provide both a signpost and a compass for that question, The Future of Occupy collective, an international initiative supporting the movement¹s self-reflection, is announcing the opening of its website. It is a virtual library of actionable movement documents, blogposts, and a platform for conversations that matter. It provides the media, activists, academics, and an engaged public with one-stop access to information and insights about the future of the movement, as it emerges. The Future of Occupy Collective is an open and expanding group of individuals from different parts of the world, inspired to bring their talents to serve the global Occupy movement by curating an online platform that mirrors its best thinking and most innovative practices. It brings into focus the news and views related to the movement¹s identity, future, and strategy, scattered in various print and electronic media, including bloggers and websites sympathizing with Occupy. On January 3rd, 2012, The Future of Occupy Collective has announced the publication of the first issue of its newsletter, dedicated to the Future of Assemblies. As we enter the new year and the movement enters a new phase of its development, many sites are evicted or facing eviction. Continuing to hold General Assemblies, in one way or another, seems more important than ever, since they are one of the movement¹s potent life-giving forces. That¹s why we focus the first issue of the newsletter on them. You can find it here: <http://thefutureofoccupy.org/thematic-issues/20121-the-future-of-assemblies /> The FoO Collective recognized the movement¹s need to learn fast from its experience in order to remain a vibrant, living laboratory for overcoming the democracy deficiency of present social systems. There¹s a section of the website focused on Movement Sense-Making, which says ³Collaborative sensing and thinking is a crucial part of the movement and essential for boosting capabilities to the scale of transformation it seeks... Our aim is not to produce a uniform perspective on the future of the movement, but to present the diversity of existing views.² The originator of the FoO site is the School of Commoning, an international group of commons educators, partnering with the University of Notre Dame in the US, and other organizations. The FoO Collective is now an autonomous project and has members with no connection to the School of Commoning. Fw: Civilised New Year
by robert searle 03 Jan '12

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: CivilisedMoney <info(a)civilisedmoney.co.uk> To: Robert Searle <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Tuesday, 3 January 2012, 14:49 Subject: Civilised New Year Dear Robert Searle Civilised New Year Happy New Year. 2012 is a big year for Civilised Money and also for our financial system. Governments and banks are desperately trying to shore up a very badly broken system, for more on the problems with the system see Jem Bendell's talk on our YouTube Channel . 2012 also seems to be the year for alternatives to the existing financial system. There is masses of financial system innovation going on all over the world, very little of it is coming from the existing players. By the end of 2012 it seems likely that more and more of us will be using our mobile phones as wallets and using people to people services for our borrowing, investing, currency exchange and even insurance. CivilisedMoney is well placed to be part of this revolution in financial services and our aim, by the end of 2012 is to be well on the way to enabling our customers to use their Civilised Money account as their main service for all of their transactions, a trusted and viable alternative to existing bank accounts. We are really inspired by the number of enquiries we have had from all over the world, from people and businesses wanting to bring Civilised Money to their country. We are keen to start conversations with these people and to see how we might be able to make it happen. We have also had an enormous number of requests for information on our Lend & Borrow product and our donations platform. Our subscribers will be kept up to date with all developments, so please keep reading these newsletters to keep track of progress. Don't forget that CivilisedMoney already has an active rewards-based crowdfunding feature - Crowdfund & Get Funded. We're delighted to be working with some fascinating organisations who are raising funds through this - if you have a project you need to raise funds for, please get in touch. You can also 'like' CivilsedMoney onFacebookand follow us onTwitter. RSA - The Third Industrial Revolution
by Amjad 03 Jan '12

03 Jan '12

http://www.thersa.org/events/audio-and-past-events/2011/the-third-industria… Acclaimed author, political adviser and ‘social and ethical prophet’ *Jeremy Rifkin* visits the RSA to explore how internet technology and renewable energy are merging to create a powerful ‘Third Industrial Revolution.’ He asks us to imagine hundreds of millions of people producing their own green energy in their homes, offices, and factories, and sharing it with each other in an ‘energy internet,’ just like we now create and share information online. In just a few years, millions of buildings and even cities will become energy self-sufficient, signalling the end of our reliance on fossil fuels. This transformation is already underway in Europe, where Rifkin serves as EU advisor on a project that will revolutionize the continent's energy supply. Join Jeremy Rifkin as he describes how the five-pillars of the Third Industrial Revolution will create thousands of businesses and millions of jobs, and usher in a fundamental reordering of human relationships, from hierarchical to lateral power, that will impact the way we conduct business, govern society, educate our children, and engage in civic life.
