Fw: The Infinite-Planet Approach Won’t Solve the European Debt Crisis

Guest Post: The Infinite-Planet Approach Won't Solve the European Debt Crisis by Eric Zencey [At the beginning of December last year] European leaders met in Brussels and, like sophomores cramming before a final, pulled an all-nighter. Their exam was a real-world project: restore investor confidence in the Eurozone. A lot of pressure was put on David Cameron to bring the UK into the new agreement; he was adamant in his refusal. Even without the UK, the measures that the Eurozone nations have announced may restore investor confidence, but one thing is certain: they shouldn’t, because they’ll fail miserably at staving off future financial crisis. That’s because “restoring investor confidence” and “fixing the broken system” are two very different goals. Read more at the Future of Finance Blog. Diana Propper on Investing in "Next Wave" Companies In her paper, "Integrated Value--A New Private Equity Model for Driving Value Creation," Diana Propper de Callejon, a General Partner of Expansion Capital Partners LLC and a member of Capital Institute’s Board of Directors, reports on the emerging opportunities for investing in sustainability that her venture capital firm is accessing as it identifies a new generation of private companies that are, from inception, committing to a corporate vision of “continuous improvement in environmental performance and social impact...as a primary driver of innovation and value creation over the long term.” These “next wave” companies, she reports, see this commitment as inextricably linked to their position as industry leaders and as fundamental to their long-term competitive advantage. In an upcoming Profile we will talk with Propper de Callejon about her personal journey from clean tech investor to integrated value investor. The event, organized by Ceres, will address the latest innovations in climate and energy financing, where capital needs to be committed for climate adaptation and energy solutions to flourish, and the financial community’s key role in advancing strong, comprehensive climate and energy policies. Capital Institute looks forward to hearing how we can engage with the work of this critical group of finance professionals. To learn more about the conference visit ceres.org. What We're Reading In the second edition of America Beyond Capitalism, author Gar Alperovitz’s expert diagnosis of the long-term structural crisis of the American economic and political system is accompanied by detailed, practical answers to the problems we face as a society. America Beyond Capitalism ________________________________ Comment of the Week "This analysis is spot on! It deserves much wider dissemination. The endless economic growth model cannot continue, and is already destroying the capacity of the environment to meet current global needs. In fact, much of the financial difficulty we are seeing in "mature" economies like the US, EU and Japan is perhaps already an indication that we are there." -Bill M, What’s Wrong With the Debt Debate ________________________________ Quote of the Week "To convert the business man into the profiteer is to strike a blow at capitalism, because it destroys the psychological equilibrium which permits the perpetuance of unequal rewards. The businessman is only tolerable so long as his gains can be held to bear some relation to what, roughly and in some sense, his activities have contributed to society." -John Maynard Keynes To unsubscribe from this email list, click here. 73 Arch Street, 3rd Floor Greenwich, CT 06830 United States

by 2018 only about 25% of jobs will require a college degree
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 09 Jan '12

http://mondediplo.com/2012/01/14education If you want poor children to do better in school, forget about their education, just make them less poor. But the path from educational to economic equality faces a more daunting challenge. Even if education could overcome the effects of poverty and give every student an equal chance of attaining a college degree, that will not affect the economy into which children will enter. In the US, which job will provide the most new openings by 2018? Cashier. Second most? Retail salesperson. Third? Waiter or waitress. Fourth? Customer service representative. The next three? Registered nurse, food preparation and service worker, office clerk. None of these jobs requires a degree. With the exception of registered nurse, which needs an associate degree, none requires more than short- or medium-term on-the-job training. And only being a registered nurse pays enough to keep a family clear of the poverty threshold. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, by 2018 only about 25% of jobs will require a college degree: the others will make do with work experience or on-the-job training, and pay accordingly.

Re: [P2P-F] OSE Community in Germany

Hi Nikolay, I am definitely working in the same direction. I cc: p2pfoundation list ; Marcin , and a few other friends living in , or in between, Berlin and Leipzig - see links Nikolay shares - http://oseeurope.org/2012/01/**creating-ose-community-in-**germany/<http://oseeurope.org/2012/01/creating-ose-community-in-germany/> (in English) http://oseeurope.org/2012/01/**aufbau-der-ose-community-in-**deutschland/<http://oseeurope.org/2012/01/aufbau-der-ose-community-in-deutschland/> (in German) Personally, I currently start with the focus on the development of a project in Leipzig, for which we currently have an initial 100 000 euros to purchase a first building. http://sharewiki.org/en/Leipzig_project Regarding land use, I am interested in the potentials of the* region between Berlin and Leipzig, * and more specifically along the regional train lines / stations, http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.8499755859375&layers=T&lon=12.24975585… and regional/international cycling routes , in red on this map : http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.8499755859375&layers=C&lon=12.24975585… Some existing communities live along such lines - possibly some potential can rest in partnerships. I also believe there are networks of people ( including engineers, designers, activists, students, ... ) in Berlin and Leipzig interested in learning together by supporting ( non commercial ? ) open source technical approaches to food farming. I believe I will pass by Berlin shortly in February. We can stay in touch, and visit places together ? // further notes : I keep looking at buildings on LWB http://lwb-immobilienangebote.de/index.php/objekte/anzeigen I also noticed a big factory via google street view, and wonder if it is for sale ? http://g.co/maps/vxsur http://g.co/maps/wk6x9 It is next to a S-Bahn - a lot of trees around it, and also a lot of Alottment Gardening<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allotment_(gardening)>nearby. I wish to use open source ecology on large, cheap land between Berlin and Leipzig, but would be interested in introducing such approaches to allotment gardens with the facility of urban transportation, nearby ( technical ? ) universities, and the potential for urban living collectives and the purchase of abandoned industrial space for developing manufacturing aspects ( the machines ) related to an open source ecology approach. In addition to visiting such places together ( in february ? ), I am willing to discuss funding schemes, and legal structures. Furthermore, it may be interesting to discuss such approach at the Ecotopia ( site will probably be updated : http://ecotopia2012.org/ ) , since the Ecotopia is situated in the region - and along the regional train line - between Leipzig and Berlin, next to a train station bought by people related to community projects. Fw: The great British tax scandal

----- Forwarded Message ----- From: Alex Wilks - Avaaz.org <avaaz(a)avaaz.org> To: "dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk" <dharao4(a)yahoo.co.uk> Sent: Thursday, 5 January 2012, 18:50 Subject: The great British tax scandal Dear friends across the UK, Our tax agency is letting big businesses like Goldman Sachs off billions of pounds of tax. MPs have called for action, but the government isn't responding. Let's boost the MPs' call and get the Prime Minister to ensure full transparency and full payment. Sign now: Our tax chief had secret lunches with Vodafone and Goldman Sachs and then handed them billions in tax breaks – while keeping Parliament in the dark! MPs are outraged, claiming we are owed over 25 billion pounds in back taxes from these and similar dodgy deals. But the tax agency has blocked an inquiry into the scandal and refuses to release any documents to shed light on why these tax breaks were ordered in the first place.By acting together now we can ensure full transparency on the Goldman Sachs and Vodafone deals, and get them to pay the tax they owe. Let’s turn up the heat -- sign the tax justice petition to David Cameron -- we’ll deliver it with a splash next week:http://www.avaaz.org/en/goldman_sachs_pay_your_tax/?vlThe cosy relationship between the public tax authority and major private companies is shocking: the tax agency boss had more than a hundred lunches with big business tax lawyers and advisers, leading to the companies being let off millions in taxes. The agency tried to obstruct a recent Parliamentary inquiry using flimsy confidentiality arguments, and threatened the whistleblower who helped expose the scandal. The coalition is weak and on the defensive over the economy and several Conservative and Lib Dem MPs are fuming over these tax revelations. But the government has yet to demand full payment. Only public pressure can change Cameron's position and ensure that big businesses pay what they owe rather than manoeuvre and lobby to minimise their tax bills. We should be able to trust our public tax body to be free of corporate capture and able to recover taxes owed without fear or favour. Join the call for tax justice -- click below to sign the petition:http://www.avaaz.org/en/goldman_sachs_pay_your_tax/?vlFrom Occupy to the G20, citizens across the world are coming together to push back corporate interests, fight against dodgy deals corrupting our governments and bring back transparency -- and the pressure is working.
