Wikipedia Blackout Notice....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:SOPA_initiative/Learn_more From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia < Wikipedia:SOPA initiative Jump to: navigation, search Why is Wikipedia blacked-out? Wikipedia is protesting against SOPA and PIPA by blacking out the English Wikipedia for 24 hours, beginning at midnight January 18, Eastern Time. Readers who come to English Wikipedia during the blackout will not be able to read the encyclopedia. Instead, you will see messages intended to raise awareness about SOPA and PIPA, encouraging you to share your views with your representatives, and with each other on social media. What are SOPA and PIPA? SOPA and PIPA represent two bills in the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate respectively. SOPA is short for the "Stop Online Piracy Act," and PIPA is an acronym for the "Protect IP Act." ("IP" stands for "intellectual property.") In short, these bills are efforts to stop copyright infringement committed by foreign web sites, but, in our opinion, they do so in a way that actually infringes free expression while harming the Internet. Detailed information about these bills can be found in the Stop Online Piracy Act and PROTECT IP Act articles on Wikipedia, which are available during the blackout. GovTrack lets you follow both bills through the legislative process: SOPA on this page, and PIPA on this one. The EFF has summarized why these bills are simply unacceptable in a world that values an open, secure, and free Internet. Why is the blackout happening? Wikipedians have chosen to black out the English Wikipedia for the first time ever, because we are concerned that SOPA and PIPA will severely inhibit people's access to online information. This is not a problem that will solely affect people in the United States: it will affect everyone around the world. Why? SOPA and PIPA are badly drafted legislation that won't be effective at their stated goal (to stop copyright infringement), and will cause serious damage to the free and open Internet. They put the burden on website owners to police user-contributed material and call for the unnecessary blocking of entire sites. Small sites won't have sufficient resources to defend themselves. Big media companies may seek to cut off funding sources for their foreign competitors, even if copyright isn't being infringed. Foreign sites will be blacklisted, which means they won't show up in major search engines. And, SOPA and PIPA build a framework for future restrictions and suppression. Does this mean that Wikipedia itself is violating copyright laws, or hosting pirated content? No, not at all. Some supporters of SOPA and PIPA characterize everyone who opposes them as cavalier about copyright, but that is not accurate. Wikipedians are knowledgeable about copyright and vigilant in protecting against violations: Wikipedians spend thousands of hours every week reviewing and removing infringing content. We are careful about it because our mission is to share knowledge freely. To that end, all Wikipedians release their contributions under a free license, and all the material we offer is freely licensed. Free licenses are incompatible with copyright infringement, and so infringement is not tolerated. Isn't SOPA dead? Wasn't the bill shelved, and didn't the White House declare that it won't sign anything that resembles the current bill? No, neither SOPA nor PIPA is dead. On January 17th, SOPA's sponsor said the bill will be discussed in early February. There are signs PIPA may be debated on the Senate floor next week. Moreover, SOPA and PIPA are just indicators of a much broader problem. In many jurisdictions around the world, we're seeing the development of legislation that prioritizes overly-broad copyright enforcement laws, laws promoted by power players, over the preservation of individual civil liberties. How could SOPA and PIPA hurt Wikipedia? SOPA and PIPA are a threat to Wikipedia in many ways. For example, in its current form, SOPA would require Wikipedia to actively monitor every site we link to, to ensure it doesn't host infringing content. Any link to an infringing site could put us in jeopardy of being forced offline. I live in the United States. What's the best way for me to help? The most effective action you can take is to call your representatives and tell them you oppose SOPA and PIPA, and any similar legislation. Type your zipcode in the locator box to find your representatives' contact information. Text-based communication is okay, but phone calls have the most impact. I don't live in the United States. How can I help? Contact your local State Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or similar branch of government. Tell them you oppose SOPA and PIPA, and any similar legislation. SOPA and PIPA will affect sites outside of the United States, and actions to sites inside the United States (like Wikipedia) will also affect non-American readers -- like you. Calling your own government will also let them know you don't want them to create their own bad anti-Internet legislation. Is it still possible to access Wikipedia in any way? Yes. During the blackout, Wikipedia is accessible on mobile devices and smart phones. You can also view Wikipedia normally by disabling JavaScript in your browser, as explained on this Technical FAQ page. Our purpose here isn't to make it completely impossible for people to read Wikipedia, and it's okay for you to circumvent the blackout. We just want to make sure you see our message. I keep hearing that this is a fight between Hollywood and Silicon Valley. Is that true? No. Some people are characterizing it that way, probably in an effort to imply all the participants are motivated by commercial self-interest. But it's obviously not that simple. The proof of that is Wikipedia's involvement. Wikipedia has no financial self-interest at play here: we do not benefit from copyright infringement, nor are we trying to monetize traffic or sell ads. We are protesting to raise awareness about SOPA and PIPA solely because we think they will hurt the Internet, and your ability to access information online. We are doing this for you, because we're on your side. In carrying out this protest, is Wikipedia abandoning neutrality? We hope you continue to trust Wikipedia to be a neutral informational resource. We are staging this blackout because (as Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustee Kat Walsh said recently), although Wikipedia’s articles are neutral, its existence is not. For over a decade, Wikipedians have spent millions of hours building the largest encyclopedia in human history. It is a tremendously useful resource. And its existence depends upon a free, open and uncensored Internet. SOPA and PIPA (and other similar laws under discussion inside and outside the United States) will hurt you, because they will make it impossible for sites you enjoy, and benefit from, to continue to exist. That's why we're doing this. What can I read to get more information? Try these links: * Blog post from Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director, Sue Gardner * Official Wikimedia Foundation press release * Statement from the community affirming blackout * Electronic Frontier Foundation blog post on the problems with SOPA/PIPA * Wikipedia's articles on SOPA and PIPA As of midnight PT, January 18, Google has 3,740 articles about the blackout. OSE Case Study
by Wouter Tebbens 17 Jan '12

17 Jan '12

Dear all, Recently I have been writing a brief case study about OSE. First of all it was a great learning experience, and I got help from several people from the OSE community who kindly answered my questions. I just hit the publish button, and here it is, on my new Microfactoria Blog: http://microfactoria.wordpress.com/2012/01/17/case-open-source-ecology-fact… In the study I made several reflections, be it brief and look forward to hear your ideas on that. Comments are welcome. I hope it is useful for reuse by others - I publish under CC-BY-SA. Maybe as well of interest is a conceptual and introductory overview I made of Free and Open Hardware: http://microfactoria.wordpress.com/2011/12/09/from-software-to-hardware/ best, -- Wouter Tebbens -- Free Knowledge Institute ---- http://freeknowledge.eu/ Free Technology Academy ----- http://ftacademy.org/ http://campus.ftacademy.org/community/pg/profile/wouter SIP phone: wt(a)pbxes.org ----- http://identi.ca/wtebbens

Hi Thomas, and all thanks for your reply. in reply to your sentence *" I am seeing value in somehow building and sustaining a concurrently shared database of human concerns. "Trust Exchange" ? : Open Source Exchange system
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 14 Jan '12

http://enlightenedstructure.org/ *( thanks to IMS for suggesting the link ! )* Superseding the Scarcity Economy ::: The Trust Exchange *utilizes the network of trust relationships that already exist, making them visible, interlinked and actionable. Most of our decisions are based on collective opinions and discernment, particularly those of friends we trust.* Introduction copied from pdf http://enlightenedstructure.org/wp-content/uploads/EnlightenedStructure.pdf * * * EnlightenedStructure.org We live in a time where information is quickly becoming our most valuable resource. Our capacity for information exchange directly affects our level of success in developing and sustaining relationships and organizations. The quality of our communication and the tools we use to augment collaboration influence all our projects and processes. Enlightened Structure is a web of projects which represent new systems for creating, sharing, and interacting with information. Many of the challenges of our age cannot be solved from within the level of their existing systems. These projects serve as platforms to harness our inherent collective intelligence, augmenting our natural human capacities. These platforms offer solutions at a different level, by fundamentally re-engineering creative processes, the exchange of trust, visibility of information, and the operating systems of communities and organizations. The Trust Exchange Superseding the Scarcity Economy The Trust Exchange utilizes the network of human trust relationships that already exist, making them visible, interlinked and actionable. Most of our decisions are based on collective opinions and discernment, particularly those of friends we trust. The Trust exchange brings visibility to your friends’ ratings of products, companies, websites, and more. In turn, you can rate your trust level of a friend or information source in any category, where categories are simply user-created tags. One friend you may trust for their computer knowledge, and another for their culinary capacity. The Trust Exchange amalgamates existing ratings from multiple sources – and ultimately any source – and feeds them into an open platform. Instead of owning your ratings and trust information, like existing online networks and organizations, the Trust Exchange is a simple, powerful, non-proprietary platform for humanity to exchange its trust information. Individuals can choose whether to make ratings publicly available, or share them privately with trusted contacts. The purpose of the Trust Exchange is to support and facilitate the era of transparency that is emerging. Anyone doing research on a purchase can tap into the publicly available ratings of relevant companies, to help them choose a product or supplier aligned with their own values. EnlightenedStructure.org Even corporations can become model citizens when social capital is tied closely enough to revenue. The engine of capitalism then becomes an engine for systemic self-improvement. The Core Network Geometric System Interface The Core Network is a social browser and visual interface based on the geometry and physics of space-time itself. It traces our interactions and relationships with information, displaying them using colors and geometric shapes, and organizing them by shared keywords, categories, and proximity references. The system is designed to enable us to more clearly see how we are related to each other, as well as how closely we are connected, based on personal preferences and community interactions. The interface functions like a multidimensional map, with each user at the center of their own personal browser. Surrounding them, their social and information networks, from people to bookmarked websites, are elegantly displayed in a color-coded geometric matrix. Items they interact with regularly position themselves adjacent to their “avatar” in the honeycomb grid, while items they interact with less often are displayed further away. Each connection in the grid is organically organized by relationship categories based on similar tags or keywords. For ease of display and efficient user referencing, these categories are simply represented by color coded points. The system is designed to aggregate data from a variety of social networks and search engines. It can be used as either a standalone browser, or a module that can be inserted into an existing website or application. Priorities in the interface design are flexibility and ease of use. The map is rendered and displayed with smooth physics-based movement, and reorients itself according to searches or general navigation. The geometric structure, which can be rendered in 2D or 3D, also displays changes in interactions over time. WikiNodes Massively Parallel Creative Collaboration Wikis have revolutionized textual information sharing. Documents created by harnessing collective collaboration far outperform previous modes of knowledge aggregation. Wikipedia has demonstrated the incredible effectiveness of this approach. Just as open source has changed the face of software, and wikis have changed the arena of knowledge sharing, so too is a revolution brewing as creative collaboration becomes possible across all forms of media. WikiNodes is designed to create a boundless and self-evolving container for collective EnlightenedStructure.org intelligence to congregate around any type of project, while retaining the edits and contributions of every individual. In the WikiNodes collaboration platform, contributors do not have to agree on a single version; each author can maintain their own latest version. This “branching” of creative works encourages a diversity of perspectives that can be exchanged and interwoven in a massive creative network. Authors can create unlimited branches, easily view differences between branches, and merge in changes from other versions and authors. The power of remixing. WikiNodes is an engine for massively parallel creative collaboration of all sorts. It harnesses the power of existing systems and workflows currently used for developing software, and applies them to creating media at large. Integration Enlightened Structure is designed as a suite of software startups, each with a separate and clear mission. This suite of companies will serve two purposes: 1) Enlightenment, and 2) Profit. The Trust Exchange, The Core Network, and WikiNodes are the key platform-level projects that, interdependent, build the enlightened technology layer on top of the existing Internet. These platforms will be released open source, free to the world, and all IP will be Creative Commons licensed, so that this enlightened structure layer is itself remixable Free IP. The suite of companies will also include for-profit ventures, which will build on the same platforms, and leverage the expertise within this startup ecosystem. Custom applications can also be created for clients with specialized needs. *

Thanks Apostolis. Just felt like informing - midst more and more ( graph based ? ) approaches I see, encouraging transactions while having access to information on reputation ( or past transactions ? ) I recommend also, in the same spirit, though possibly more documented, Robin Upton's work and code for F2F http://www.altruists.org/projects/ge/ff/ http://wiki.friend2friend.net/wiki/Friend2Friend http://friend2friend.net/ or other projects supported by other programmers, such as http://www.automenta.com/netention I posted to ripple list as I hope there can be synergies created through informing on such kind of projects, although I myself am not a programmer. Can the p2pfoundation join the website strike on January 18 ? Or at least, enable users to end up on a notice page explaining the current SOPA ( and european or Japanese equivalent ) censorship of the internet ? ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Donny Shaw <info(a)fightforthefuture.org> Date: Fri, Jan 13, 2012 at 11:34 PM Subject: BREAKING NEWS: Web Goes on Strike! To: ** On Jan. 18th there is going to be an all-out strike on the internet. Websites across the internet are going dark in protest of the internet censorship bills in Congress, SOPA and PIPA. Some of the biggest sites in the world are participating: Reddit, Mozilla. And some others may join (e.g. a leading micro-blogging platform and a popular collaboratively-written encyclopedia), but they need a nudge. If we can get them to join this will be EPIC. *Ask the biggest sites on the internet to join the strike.
