thanks for helping Ben, in cc, with this important question: < first question: Is it possible, or do you know of resources and data I can look at, to maintain the exponential growth the economic structures require? Id appreciate any other reflections or ideas you have about how this relatively short-term scenario could possibly play out. > part of my own answer is below with recommended resources Ben, see http://blog.p2pfoundation.net/p2p-practices-as-condition-for-the-next-long-… In this paper, I draw on Kondratieff wave theory and Carlota Perez to describe the near and longer future scenario, basically: Sudden system shock makes previous system inoperable 15 years of crisis, deleveraging of debt, etc .... New wave based on new principles, which could/should include substantive p2p practices However, the underlying biospheric and civilisational crisis may very well complicate things substantially, this may very well be the last wave of capitalism Sam, I remember you place the congruence of ecological crisis in 2030, do you have any sources on that? Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Date: Wed, Sep 14, 2011 at 4:57 PM Subject: Re: Student Paper To: ben zand <benzand57(a)gmail.com> Dear Ben thanks for that email and I pretty much agree with your summary of the world situation, not sure though where I can find these data, but here is a summary by Ted Trainer: http://p2pfoundation.net/Radical_Implications_of_a_Zero_Growth_Economy (see also below, I"m adding stuff as I think of it) and this is probably quite important: http://p2pfoundation.net/Planetary_Boundaries "The following points drive home the magnitude of the overshoot:* * 1. *If the 9 billion people we will have on earth within about 50 yearswere to use resources at the per capita rate of the rich countries, annual resource production would have to be about 8 times as great as it is now. * 2. * If 9 billion people were to have a North American diet we would need about 4.5 billion ha of cropland, but there are only 1.4 billion ha of cropland on the planet. * 3. * Water resources are scarce and dwindling. What will the situation be if 9 billion people try to use water as we in rich countries do, while the greenhouse problem reduces water resources. * 4. * The world’s fisheries are in serious trouble now, most of them overfished and in decline. What happens if 9 billion people try to eat fish at the rate Australian’s do now? * 5. * Several mineral and other resources are likely to be very scarce soon, including gallium, indium, helium, and there are worries about copper, zinc, silver and phosphorous. * 6. * Oil and gas are likely to be in decline soon, and largely unavailable in the second half of the century. If 9 billion were to consume oil at the Australian per capita rate, world demand would be about 5 times as great as it is now. The seriousness of this is extreme, given the heavy dependence of our society on liquid fuels. * 7. * Recent 'Footprint' analysis indicates that it takes 8 ha of productive land to provide water, energy, settlement area and food for one person living in Australia. (World Wildlife Fund, 2009.) So if 9 billion people were to live as we do about 72 billion ha of productive land would be needed. But that is about 10 times all the available productive land on the planet. * 8. * The most disturbing argument is to do with the greenhouse problem. It is very likely that in order to stop the carbon content of the atmosphere rising to dangerous levels CO2 emissions will have to be totally eliminated by 2050 (Hansen says 2030). (Hansen, 2009, Meinschausen et al., 2009.) Geo-sequestration can’t enable this, if only because it can only capture about 85% of the 50% of emissions that come from stationary sources like power stations."* some sources to check: http://p2pfoundation.net/Energy_Scenarios http://p2pfoundation.net/Powerdown_Scenarios http://p2pfoundation.net/Sustainable_Shrinkage I recommend you take a look at 'overall policy frameworks', see Introduction: - On the Necessity of Mediation for Economic and Social Transitions<http://p2pfoundation.net/On_the_Necessity_of_Mediation_for_Economic_and_Soc…>. an update on OSE
by Michel Bauwens 15 Sep '11

will appear on the blog: from Marcin, *Core Deliverables* At the present phase, our core deliverables are machine prototypes, documentation (see CEB Press<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/CEB_Press/Manufacturing_Instructions>, Power Cube<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Power%20Cube/Manufacturing_Instructions>, and Tractor<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/LifeTrac/Manufacturing_Instructions> as examples), and distributive enterprise<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Distributive_Enterprise>business models that anyone can access to bring wealth to their communities. This year, will be delivering the OSE Christmas Gift to the World<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Christmas_Gift_to_the_World_2011>: 4 full product releases (tractor, CEB press, soil pulverizer, Power Cube) by this year's end, as well as full documentation – to make replication a straightforward reality. You can read more points of the more general OSE Platform on our wiki <http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Platform>. We are beginning to demonstrate economic significance. To test the significance of our tools, we not only develop them, but dogfood them, and take them to market – as part of open business model development. Last year, we cleared $3k. This year, we cleared $25k from our production run of tractors and CEB presses, which we put back immediately into the operation to bootstrap further development. Next year, we expect to clear $125-250k from production. Of our core deliverables, the last step of distributive enterprise development is entrepreneurship training. This relies on the availability of both prototypes and crystal-clear documentation. Such training can be the foundation for a post-scarcity economy<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Post-Scarcity>. Using existing technology, we believe firmly that it is possible to attain a modern standard of living at 2 hours per day of labor - while remaining completely within the limits of natural life support systems – while avoiding geopolitical compromises. Our goal is to lead the creation *Technology for the People* as a regenerative force for creating prosperity wherever soil, sunshine, and water are found. *Growth* Since the TED Talk, this project has grown tremendously. We are committed to continuing on a smart and lean effort for changing the world – without bloat that can spoil good ideas. We have built this project on the open source approach. We went 100% to crowd funding<http://blog.opensourceecology.org/2008/11/october-progress-report-major-suc…>in 2008 when our own resources ran dry, and started the 1000 True Fans Campaign <http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/True_Fans> in 2009. The True Fans are donors who give donations from $10 to $100 per month for 24 months, and they have been the uninterrupted mainstay of our work. Read what other True Fans are saying and subscribe<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/True_Fans>. If you are a direct stakeholder who would like to see our results sooner rather than later, you may want to consider a subscription. . This year, we have shown significant earnings for bootstrapping further development. We also began to take tax deductible contributions through our fiscal sponsor – though we are cautious about avoiding pitfalls of institutionalization. We see the latter as a temporary step that can assist in the emergence of the open source economy. We've also observed that very few interests are opposed to the ideals of Open Source Ecology – as we are positioning ourselves as an absolutely creative approach. Everybody knows there are problems, and everybody wants solutions. We have also seen first evidence of independent replication. Currently, there are 2 efforts in Texas building the CEB press, Power Cube, and LifeTrac. We are working on perfecting our documentation. We have had several fabricators-in-training at Factor e Farm who are interested in starting their own productive enterprises in other locations. That's the distributive economy at work. *Near-Term Goals* Our Phase 1 goal is completing the 50 GVCS prototypes and documentation by year-end 2012, with about $4-5M of funding. Crowd funding, earnings, and the non-profit sector are our 3 sources of support. Our metric of success is the number of successful entrepreneurs that we help to train. Read the GVCS Rollout Plan<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/GVCS_Rollout_Plan>. We've got a long way to go, and people say that we're crazy. We are confident that the support is gaining epic proportions. The main challenge remains the due diligence of. finding entrepreneurial, interdisciplinary, boundary-crossing developers - with the skills and dedication to make this ambitious project a success. With good project leaders, we can secure resources. The basic process is producing concrete proposals for each of the technologies. We encourage you to submit a nonexclusive proposal bid<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Proposal_Template>for our review. If the due diligence is there, we will find a way to fund it through our extensive network of supporters, especially the TED community. The problem is quite tractable – as we are not inventing anything new. Therefore, this is a process which lends itself to massive parallel development. The question is – does the world have the will to make this happen. It's up to you to vote with your energy and contribute to the core deliverables – we're an open source project. MID TERM GOALS January 1. 2013 will mark the kickoff of the social experiment which Michel alluded to in the first paragraph. We will be testing whether it is possible to create a materially-prosperous community, whether right here at Factor e Farm or in the heart of Africa, on the scale of Dunbar's number in size - that enjoys 1-2 hour per day work requirements to provide a modern standard of living (including ability to trade) – via wise use of productive technology - while at the same time avoiding contribution to geopolitical compromises. We aim to generate data points on the above. These data points will include: practical work requirements in hours; level of technology achieved; level of specialization reqiured; ergonomic constraints; sufficiency of local resources; happiness, satisfaction, and meaning found in the population. NEXT STEPS So how do we get there? Our current strategy is building a solid team at Factor e Farm to be able to manage a much greater, global, parallel development effort. The on-site team is the agile development team which can move forward both on the prototyping and organizational aspects. To do this, we are planning an ambitious construction plan this season. It calls for the construction of 10 living units and a 5000 square foot fabrication facility here at Factor E Farm. Tnis would finally bootstrap us to the comfortable living and working environment for developers at Factor e Farm. Infrastructure was a persistent issue throughout our history. We started from raw land – and we continue as one of the world's few, if not only, off-grid digital fabrication facilities. This is part of our civilization reboot experiment. Historically, I prioritized getting on the world map with open source hardware – because we did this all on a $1.5k/month budget from True Fans and supporters (we are now over $10k/month, with $4k from True Fans). DRASTIC IMPROVEMENT OF ACCESS TO NATURAL BUILDING As part of our development work – and to provide the much needed infrastructure at Factor e Farm - we are putting the tractor, CEB press, soil pulverizer, and Power Cube through the most rigorous field tests to date. We’ve already achieved the highest brick pressing rates of any open source model (16 bricks/minute, 5,000 bricks/day), and now we’re aiming to complete the package - by achieving $5 per square foot construction costs, while remaining within industry standard construction schedules. Our goal is to improve dramatically upon the efficiency of natural building - far surpassing the benchmarks of earthbag, cordwood, strawbale, cob, rammed earth, adobe, earthship, and papercrete techniques, while keeping the ecological footprint to bare minimums. We’ll publish a full energy accounting report, including embodied energy estimates for materials and the “joules per day” of both biological (slide: a human being) and electromechanical systems (slide: of the tractor). . See a video of the proposed workshop and living units, and read more on the wiki <http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/OSE_Shop_2011>: (video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZSS8kuejE6k&feature=player_embedded) This will be a complete closure of taking this equipment from the drawing board and first prototype almost 4 years ago<http://blog.opensourceecology.org/2007/12/ceb-phase-1-done/>– to full application towards accommodations for GVCS developers and enrepreneurs-in-training. We plan on doing this at breakthrough cost and spectacular ecological performance – while remaining within industry standard construction schedules. In addition to the open source CEB press, tractor, soil pulverizer, and power cube– we will use the first prototype of the open source dimensional sawmill <http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Sawmill/Research_Development>, open source tractor loader-mounted cement mixer, and square baler – to provide construction materials from on-site feedstocks. This includes brick, lumber, and hay-bale insulation – to deliver super-insulated housing at $2/square foot<http://opensourceecology.org/wiki/Hybrid_CEB-Straw_Superinsulated_Housing_P…>for construction materials. We will document this carefully. CHALLENGES We ran into a slight pickle, in that the $60k enabling construction grant did not yet materialize. So we took to the crowds with an emergency recovery plan <http://blog.opensourceecology.org/2011/09/recovery-plan/>, and have so far raised about $18k (some of this is not shown in the ChipIn widget) in under one week from dedicated supporters. We still have about a day left and $2k to go to reach our goal of $20k, so if you are interested in us succeeding, please chip in: CONCLUSION It's not easy building the world's first open source village. Challenges such as the one above need to be negotiated daily, and recovery plans are a regular part of the game. See the Open Source Ecologist<http://blog.opensourceecology.org/2011/08/video-the-open-source-ecologist/>for an inside look from one day on the ground. This newly created supranational currency would then be used in international trade as a unit of account within a multilateral barter clearing system – the *International Clearing Union<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Clearing_Union> * – which would also have to be founded. The Bancor was to be backed by barter and its value expressed in weight of gold. However, this British proposal of introducing a supranational currency could not prevail against the interests of the United States, which at the Bretton Woods conference<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_conference> established the U.S. dollar as world key currency. Since the outbreak of the financial crisis in 2008<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_crisis_of_2007%E2%80%932010> Keynes's proposal has been revived: In a speech delivered in March 2009 entitled *Reform the International Monetary System*,Zhou Xiaochuan<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zhou_Xiaochuan>, the governor of the People's Bank of China<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/People%27s_Bank_of_China> called Keynes's bancor approach "farsighted" and proposed the adoption of International Monetary Fund <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Monetary_Fund> (IMF)Special Drawing Rights<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special_Drawing_Rights> (SDRs) as a global reserve currency as a response to thefinancial crisis of 2007–2010<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Financial_crisis_of_2007%E2%80%932010>. He argued that a national currency was unsuitable as a global reserve currency because of the Triffin dilemma<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triffin_dilemma> - the difficulty faced by reserve currency issuers in trying to simultaneously achieve their domestic monetary policy goals and meet other countries' demand for reserve currency.[1]<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancor#cite_note-0> [2] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancor#cite_note-1> A similar analysis can be found in the Report of the United Nation's "Experts on reforms of the international monetary and financial system"<http://www.un.org/ga/president/63/commission/financial_commission.shtml> [3] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancor#cite_note-2> as well as in the IMF's study published on April 13, 2010 [1]<http://www.imf.org/external/np/pp/eng/2010/041310.pdf> [4] <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancor#cite_note-3> ////// http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Clearing_Union The *International Clearing Union* (ICU) was one of the institutions proposed to be set up at the 1944 United Nations Monetary and Financial Conference<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Monetary_and_Financial_Conferen…> at Bretton Woods, New Hampshire<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods,_New_Hampshire> by British <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_people> economist John Maynard Keynes <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Maynard_Keynes>. Its aim was to have been regulation of currency exchange, a role eventually taken by the International Monetary Fund<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Monetary_Fund> (IMF). The International Clearing Union (ICU) would be a global bank whose job would be to regulate trade between nations. All international trade would be denominated in its own currency, the proposed bancor<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bancor>. The bancor was to have had a fixed exchange rate<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fixed_exchange_rate> with national currencies, and would have been used to measure the balance of trade <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_trade> between nations. Every good exported would add bancors to a country's account, every good imported would subtract them. Each nation would be incentivized<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incentives#Incentive_in_economics> to keep their bancor balance close to zero. If a nation had too high a bancor surplus the ICU would take a percentage of that surplus and put it into the Clearing Union'sReserve Fund<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_exchange_reserves>; this would encourage nations with surpluses to buy other nations' exports. Nations that imported more than they exported would have their currency depreciated against the Bancor; encouraging other nations to buy their products, and making imports more expensive. George Monbiot <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Monbiot>, a contemporary critic of the IMF, has argued that the ICU's proposed mechanisms would have given greater weight in decision-making to the less-developed countries, which were not then as heavily involved in international trade as they are now. //// http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triffin_dilemma The *Triffin dilemma* (or the *Triffin paradox*) is a theory that when a national currency also serves as an international reserve currency<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reserve_currency>, there could be conflicts of interest between short-term domestic and long-term international economic objectives. This dilemma was first identified by Belgian <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belgium>-American<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States> economist Robert Triffin <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Triffin> in the 1960s, who pointed out that the country whose currency foreign nations wish to hold (the global reserve currency) must be willing to supply the world with an extra supply of its currency to fulfil world demand for this 'reserve' currency (foreign exchange reserves<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_exchange_reserves>) and thus cause a trade deficit. The use of a national currency as global reserve currency leads to a tension between national monetary policy and global monetary policy. This is reflected in fundamental imbalances in the balance of payments<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Balance_of_payments>, specifically the current account<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Current_account>: some goals require an overall flow of dollars *out* of the United States, while others require an overall flow of dollars *in* to the United States. Currency inflows and outflows of equal magnitudes cannot both happen at once. The Triffin dilemma is usually used to articulate the problems with the US dollar's role as the reserve currency under the Bretton Woods system<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_system>, or more generally of using any national currency as an international reserve currency. //// http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bretton_Woods_system#Dollar_shortages_and_the_… //// http://www.un.org/ga/president/63/commission/financial_commission.shtml *The Commission of Experts of the President of the UN General Assembly on Reforms of the International Monetary and Financial System* Following the break out of the financial crisis that originated, in 2008, in the most advanced countries, and then spread over to the emerging economies and less developed countries, the President of the United Nations General Assembly convened a panel of experts to discuss the large array of issues related to it. In the same breath, the President of the United Nations General Assembly established a Commission of Experts whose mandate is to reflect on the causes of the crisis, assess impacts on all countries and suggest adequate responses as to avoid its recurrence and restore global economic stability. The Commission will seek to identify the broad principles underlying needed institutional reforms required to ensure sustained global economic progress and stability which will be of benefit to all countries, developed and less developed. It will suggest a range of credible and feasible proposals for reforming the international monetary and financial system, in the broad interest of the international community, and identify and evaluate the merits and limitations of alternatives that are at the center of current global debate. The Commission will thus produce a report on recommendations to be considered in the preparatory process leading to the Conference at the highest level on the world financial and economic crisis and its impact on development called for in the final document adopted at Doha in December 2008 (resolution A/RES/63/239). A Critique of Lazy Reason..../ lazy economics
by ideasinc＠ee.net 15 Sep '11

15 Sep '11

Michel B, Ok, regarding the paper "A Critique of Lazy Reason" by Boadventura DeSousa Santos, it seems like a useful agenda certainly, and a project that dates back to both the disjunction of the logic of being against the logics of substitution and of appearance by means of various sociologies of absence, or emergence and of capacities. I am more familiar with the discourse of hermeneutics through the social sciences and social philosophies as interpretative sociology, as per the tracking of cosmological interpretations. Economics is exceptionally perverse as a colonizing set of assumptions, More popular versions of economics will often require sequential translations, to identify the absences, the emergences, and the capacities. As noted the translation process will be at least dyadic if not multilingual, building up a common stock of knowledge in the process. Though the content and intentions are worthy, I had difficulty with the mass of the material being written from largely outside of critical sociology and of social hermeneutics as intended by Max Weber, and others. Santos will find receptive co-workers already busy at this project. Parmenides in his time already named the colonizing rhetorics as twin headed, know nothings. That this sort of lineage of discourse has occasionally sputtered to life and then drifted off stage for many reasons and persuasions, is an unfortunate fact of hegemonic and "positivistic" social science. Hegel's Phenomenology of Mind is on close analysis obliged to address capacities and diversity, cf Walter Davis's "Being and Existence." Using this as a useful framing will work a a meta-process, and it will require a stepwise process of translation. Foremost at risk will be the popular speculations and pseudo emergences that stop short of being also examined as also a colonial branding of poorly translated expectations not quite into practice. What would have been my dissertation was toward a hermeneutics of everyday life, even by way of zones of contact and translation. As a general framework for both weeding out neo-classical and colonial assumptions toward an open space framing could have some unexpected coding dissonance. as we go, Tadit Anderson

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: HASTAC .org <hastac(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Sep 15, 2011 at 9:31 PM Subject: Badges for Lifelong Learning: 4th Digital Media & Learning Competition To: HASTAC Organization <hastac(a)gmail.com> The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, in collaboration with Mozilla and HASTAC, invite you to an event on September 15th at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington, DC to explore the potential of Badges for Lifelong Learning. Badges are a new assessment tool that will help identify skills mastered in formal and informal settings, virtually and in physical spaces, and in schools, workplaces and communities. Badges for Lifelong Learning, the 4th Digital Media & Learning Competition, will will provide up to $2 million in grants for innovations in the use of Badges for Learning. Learning happens in K-12 and college classrooms, adult education and in professional development programs. Learning also happens in an array of other online and in-person environments: in afterschool programs and online tutorials, through mentoring, playing games, interacting with peers in person and in social networks, with smart phone apps, in volunteer workshops, at sports camps, during military training, and in countless other ways and other places. *Badges* A badge is a validated indicator of accomplishment, skill, quality or interest
that can be earned in any of these learning environments. Badges can support learning, validate education, help build reputation, and confirm the acquisition of knowledge. They can signal traditional academic attainment or the acquisition of skills such collaboration, teamwork, leadership, and other 21st century skills. Badges are used successfully in games, social network sites, and interest-driven programs to set goals, represent achievements and communicate success. A digital badge is an online record of achievements, the work required, and information about the organization, individual or other entity that issued the badge. Badges make the accomplishments and experiences of individuals, in online and offline spaces, visible to anyone and everyone, including potential employers, teachers, and peer communities. In addition to representing a wide range of skills, competencies, and achievements, badges can play a critical role in supporting participation in a community, encouraging broader learning goals, and enabling identity and reputation building. For a learner, a sequence of badges can be a path to gaining expertise and new competencies. Badges can capture and display that path, providing information about, and visualizations of, needed skills and competencies. They can acknowledge achievement, and encourage collaboration and teamwork. Finally, badges can foster kinship and mentorship, encourage persistence, and provide access to ever-higher levels of challenge and reward. *Digital Media and Learning Competition* <http://dmlcompetition.net/> The Fourth Digital Media and Learning Competition focuses on building digital badges for lifelong learning. The Competition is designed to encourage individuals and organizations to create badges – digital tools that support, identify, recognize, measure, and account for new skills, competencies, knowledge, and achievements for 21st century learners regardless of where and when learning takes place. The success of badges as an alternative path to accreditation and credentialing for learners relies on a significant “ecosystem” of badge issuers, badge seekers, and badge displayers. The Competition aims to spur the development of that ecosystem through the creation of high quality, valuable individual badges and sets of badges. The Mozilla Foundation, with support from the MacArthur Foundation, is building an Open Badge Infrastructure to enable the interoperability and collection of badges. The infrastructure will support badges from any issuer across the Internet. It will allow learners to collect, carry, and display their badges across websites and experiences and from youth through adulthood. All badges and sets of badges developed through the Competition will be designed to plug into the Mozilla infrastructure— which will contribute, in turn, to the development of the larger badge ecosystem. In this ecosystem, each digital badge or collection of badges can inspire learning and translate “anytime, anyplace, any age” learning into a powerful tool for getting jobs, finding communities of interest, and demonstrating skills, competencies and achievements.
