---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Chris McPhee <chris.mcphee(a)osbr.ca> Date: Wed, May 4, 2011 at 11:08 PM Subject: May Issue of OSBR Available To: Chris McPhee <chris.mcphee(a)osbr.ca> Dear Readers, The May 2011 issue of the OSBR is now available at osbr.ca. The editorial theme for this issue is Technology Entrepreneurship. In this issue, we have the following articles: Michael Ayukawa, founder of Cornerportal, reflects upon the shifts in his entrepreneurial world view framework and highlights the transformative effect of collectives on an entrepreneur's view of their environment and options. Natasha D’Souza, founder of Virtual EyeSee, illustrates how the implementation of an idea depends on the entrepreneur's approach to development and commercialization. The article focuses on leveraging collectives to increase the likelihood of entrepreneurial success. Fred Dixon, CEO of Blindside Networks, shares key lessons learned while balancing the demands of building a business and nurturing the open source project that the business depends on. Arthur Low, founder and CTO of Crack Semiconductor, retraces the history of key advances in the integrated circuits and electronic design automation tool industry to show that a shift from proprietary to open source tools now means that viable business models exist for small companies to create advanced silicon intellectual property. Igor Sales and Aparna Shanker from Carleton University's TIM program outline their plans to bring together freelance Android developers and software development firms using a platform that proves the expertise and reputation of developers. For the upcoming June issue, we continue the theme of Technology Entrepreneurship. We encourage any entrepreneurs who wish to share their insights and lessons to submit articles for this issue before May 15th. In July, we focus on Women Entrepreneurs and welcome submissions that shed light on the particular challenges of increasing the number of women in founding and leadership positions. Please contact me (chris.mcphee(a)osbr.ca) if you are interested in submitting an article for either of these themes; we also welcome general submissions on the topic of open source business or the growth of early-stage technology companies. Kind regards, Chris McPhee Editor, Open Source Business Resource http://www.osbr.ca If you no longer wish to receive email notifications from the OSBR, please send your request by email and I will unsubscribe you. ________________________________________________________________________ Open Source Business Resource http://www.osbr.ca/ojs/index.php/osbr -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: Dialogues with Tomorrow - Timothy Morton & Douglas Kahn in New Zealand
by Michel Bauwens 09 May '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Now Future <admin(a)nowfuture.org.nz> Date: Thu, May 5, 2011 at 11:01 AM Subject: Dialogues with Tomorrow - Timothy Morton & Douglas Kahn in New Zealand To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Dear Now Future friend We’re really pleased to announce that Dialogues with Tomorrow, the series that links the humanities, ecology, and the arts, is back for 2011. In 2010 the series of discussions was located at Downstage Theatre in Wellington, and for 2011 the Dialogues will be located around different cities around New Zealand. Our first two events, in Dunedin and Auckland this month, provide an extraordinary chance to hear internationally renowned authors, Sydney-based Douglas Kahn and California-based Timothy Morton. This is a unique opportunity to be part of the conversation with these two thinkers, made possible by their both being in Sydney (thanks UNSW<http://www.nowfuture.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=74&q…> ). Their Dialogue is well timed to complement and build on the visit of leading climate scientist James Hansen who is touring New Zealand.<http://www.nowfuture.org.nz/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=75&q…> The Dialogues are open to all and, thanks to our New Zealand partners (Dunedin School of Art, Otago Polytechnic and AUT), are free to attend. Dunedin: Monday May 23rd 6-8pm Dunedin Public Art Gallery Auditorium Auckland: Wednesday May 25th, 10.30-12pm, Lecture room WS 114, City Campus AUT University, 34 St Paul Street *Dark Ecologies* How do we sense and make sense of immense phenomena, such as climate change, or radiation, which are real, but real in ways which most of us do not directly experience? As ecotheorist Timothy Morton puts it, "It is very hard to get used to the idea that the catastrophe, far from being imminent, has already taken place". Morton, together with media arts historian Douglas Kahn, will discuss ways in which we can think about the challenges to humanity of nonsentient entities, like climate change and radioactivity, phenomena Morton calls ‘hyperobjects’. They ask, how can we productively respond to these challenges with the energies available to us? How do we radically question the ways in which we understand and interact with what used to be known as ‘nature’? *Douglas Kahn* is Professor of Media and Innovation at the National Institute of Experimental Arts (NIEA), University of New South Wales. Until recently, he was Professor of Science and Technology Studies at University of California, Davis. He is the editor of Source: Music of the Avant-Garde. and the author of Noise, Water, Meat: A History of Sound in the Arts, which has been highly influential and remains the benchmark text concerning sound-based art. Forthcoming books include Mainframe Experimentalism, a collection on early computing and the arts, and Earth Sound Earth Signal, on the geophysical trade of acoustics and electromagnetism in communications, science and the arts. www.douglaskahn.com *Timothy Morton* is Professor of English (Literature and the Environment) at UC Davis. His interests include literature and the environment, ecotheory, philosophy, biology, physical sciences, literary theory, food studies, sound and music, materialism, poetics, Romanticism, Buddhism, and the eighteenth century. His two most recent books, The Ecological Thought (Harvard UP, April 2010) and Ecology Without Nature (Harvard UP, 2007; paperback 2009), have had a wide and transformative impact on how ecology is conceived within the arts and humanities. We are looking for expressions of interest for talks and projects to exhibit from theorists and practitioners alike. *TOPIC* Many theorists have regarded communities as networks of interacting people within a defined territory, and policy-makers have tended to respond to this particular understanding. However, in an era where digital technologies have supported transnational forms of connectedness and the efficiency of grassroot movements, communities are once again looked at as innovative fertile grounds for alternative social organisation. In a time when these trends can be manipulated by current governmental agendas, the Connected Communities symposium aims to critically explore evolving notions of community in art, design, history, politics, sociology, journalism, and hacktivism, among others. Focus will be shed on – but not restricted to – the following topics: * Effects of digital technologies on community formation, self-realisation, and development; * How creative use of technology fosters micro-communities, empowers marginalised groups and enables new forms of cultural expression; * Socio-political impact of community connectivity on society, in particular during this period of economic change. This symposium will take place over a period of three days at Culture Lab, an interdisciplinary research laboratory and a venue for engagement and public events. It will consist of : * A conference with talks selected from submitted expressions of interests, and invited speakers. * An exhibition and a film screening centred on the notions of community and digital media. This will include blogs, documentation of community-based art workshops, art and ethnographic projects. * A focused hands-on workshop (half a day). A conference can provide a playful environment, and we create a temporary community of practice to explore deeper questions of community. The access would be limited to 15 people on a first come – first served basis. Invitation to subscribe will be sent when the conference program is set. *SUBMISSION OF EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST* Talks: The submission should express in a short text of 400 words what their interest, statements and/or work is in relation to the topic of connected communities. Exhibition: We are looking for projects than can be showcased as websites, blogs, videos, films, installations that underline the impact of digital technologies on communities or that uncover new types of communities. Please send your submissions in PDF format (additional audiovisual material can be submitted in the form of online material with corresponding URL) to the following email address by 19th May 2011, 23.59 GMT+1: ConnComm2011(a)gmail.com *IMPORTANT DATES* Deadline for expressions of interest: 19th May 2011 Notification of acceptance: 25th May 2011 Symposium: 14th-16th September 2011 *FEE* The symposium, all events included, will be free of charge for all participants. Speakers who are not supported by an institution will be offered transport to Newcastle and accommodation. *CONTACT AND INFORMATION* For more information, please email us at ConnComm2011(a)gmail.com and/or visit the symposium website: http://side-creative.ncl.ac.uk/communities/symposium11/ *ORGANISERS* Joëlle Bitton, Lalya Gaye, Andreia Cavaco, Ben Jones, Graeme Mearns and Atau Tanaka (Culture Lab Newcastle) Ranald Richardson (Center for Urban & Regional Development Studies, Newcastle University) http://side-creative.ncl.ac.uk/communities/ http://culturelab.ncl.ac.uk/ http://www.ncl.ac.uk/curds/ The symposium is funded by the AHRC research program “Connected communities” and SiDE research program at Culture Lab. http://www.ahrc.ac.uk/ http://www.side.ac.uk/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed Open Design City group. Fwd: Australia : Man Lives on cliff and talks down suicide jumpers...for last 50 years

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Sun, May 8, 2011 at 7:14 PM Subject: Australia : Man Lives on cliff and talks down suicide jumpers...for last 50 years To: Sounds meaningful - who will take over when he passes away ? Working in the field of life insurance, and developing a vocation , talking people away from suicide by giving them a hospitable alternative... ---- http://gawker.com/5563648/meet-the-australian-whos-saved-160-people-from-su…<http://current.com/http://gawker.com/5563648/meet-the-australian-whos-saved…> Meet the Australian Who's Saved 160 People from Suicide Don Ritchie lives across the street from the most famous suicide spot in Australia: A cliff known as "The Gap." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Gap_(Sydney) ) Most people would move, but Ritchie's stayed for almost 50 years—saving an estimated 160 people from suicide. So what's his big secret? Ritchie wakes up every morning and looks out the window for "anyone standing alone too close to the precipice." If he sees someone who looks like they might be contemplating a jump, he walks over and... strikes up a conversation. He just gives them a warm smile, asks if they'd like to talk and invites them back to his house for tea. Sometimes, they join him. "I'm offering them an alternative, really," Ritchie says. "I always act in a friendly manner. I smile." Ritchie's house might be the worst real estate ever. One person a week commits suicide at the "the Gap," the cliff he lives across from. It's protected only by a small, one-meter fence, despite its legendary reputation as a suicide spot dating back to the 1800s. But the former life insurance salesman says he doesn't feel "burdened" by the fact that people are always contemplating jumping to their deaths outside his house. In fact, he and his wife Moya see it as a blessing: "I think, 'Isn't it wonderful that we live here and we can help people?'" Obviously, he's not always successful, and, at times, he's had to physically restrain people from jumping while Moya calls the police. But it isn't necessarily traumatic: Despite all he has seen, he says he is not haunted by the ones who were lost. He cannot remember the first suicide he witnessed, and none have plagued his nightmares. He says he does his best with each person, and if he loses one, he accepts that there was nothing more he could have done. Ritchie, who basically sounds like the nicest guy in the entire world, is 84, and has spent much of the last year battling cancer. But, as you might expect for a dude who's managed to live across from a fucked-up, tragic place, and not become a casualty himself, he's optimistic: "I imagine somebody else will come along and do what I've been doing." I hope so. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: [fcf_discussion] Critical Point of View: A Wikipedia Reader (INC Reader #7)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Fuster, Mayo <Mayo.Fuster(a)eui.eu> Date: Mon, May 9, 2011 at 4:29 PM Subject: [fcf_discussion] Critical Point of View: A Wikipedia Reader (INC Reader #7) To: "fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net" < fcforum_discussion(a)list.fcforum.net> Hello! A compendium of Wikipedia analysis. Available here: http://www.networkcultures.org/_uploads/%237reader_Wikipedia.pdf Briefly presented below Mayo INC Reader #7 Critical Point of View: A Wikipedia Reader Geert Lovink and Nathaniel Tkacz (eds) For millions of internet users around the globe, the search for new knowledge begins with Wikipedia. The encyclopedia’s rapid rise, novel organization, and freely offered content have been marveled at and denounced by a host of commentators. Critical Point of View moves beyond unflagging praise, well-worn facts, and questions about its reliability and accuracy, to unveil the complex, messy, and controversial realities of a distributed knowledge platform. The essays, interviews and artworks brought together in this reader form part of the overarching Critical Point of View research initiative, which began with a conference in Bangalore (January 2010), followed by events in Amsterdam (March 2010) and Leipzig (September 2010). With an emphasis on theoretical reflection, cultural difference and indeed, critique, contributions to this collection ask: What values are embedded in Wikipedia’s software? On what basis are Wikipedia’s claims to neutrality made? How can Wikipedia give voice to those outside the Western tradition of Enlightenment, or even its own administrative hierarchies? Critical Point of View collects original insights on the next generation of wiki-related research, from radical artistic interventions and the significant role of bots to hidden trajectories of encyclopedic knowledge and the politics of agency and exclusion.
