Mobile theme on p2pwiki
by Samuel Rose 12 Feb '11

The new mobile device theme as the default on p2p wiki is actually really great. I can see this making it easier to show people pages on a phone, tablet devices, and even pulling pages up on a projector, as the presentation is so much cleaner overall. Slavoj Zizek: For Egypt, this is the miracle of Tahrir Square (Guardian).
by Michel Bauwens 12 Feb '11

12 Feb '11

http://www.guardian.co.uk/global/2011/feb/10/egypt-miracle-tahrir-square?CM… For Egypt, this is the miracle of Tahrir Square There is no room for compromise. Either the entire Mubarak edifice falls, or the uprising is betrayed Slavoj Zizek One cannot but note the "miraculous" nature of the events in Egypt: something has happened that few predicted, violating the experts' opinions, as if the uprising was not simply the result of social causes but the intervention of a mysterious agency that we can call, in a Platonic way, the eternal idea of freedom, justice and dignity. The uprising was universal: it was immediately possible for all of us around the world to identify with it, to recognise what it was about, without any need for cultural analysis of the features of Egyptian society. In contrast to Iran's Khomeini revolution (where leftists had to smuggle their message into the predominantly Islamist frame), here the frame is clearly that of a universal secular call for freedom and justice, so that the Muslim Brotherhood had to adopt the language of secular demands. The most sublime moment occurred when Muslims and Coptic Christians engaged in common prayer on Cairo's Tahrir Square, chanting "We are one!" – providing the best answer to the sectarian religious violence. Those neocons who criticise multiculturalism on behalf of the universal values of freedom and democracy are now confronting their moment of truth: you want universal freedom and democracy? This is what people demand in Egypt, so why are the neocons uneasy? Is it because the protesters in Egypt mention freedom and dignity in the same breath as social and economic justice? >From the start, the violence of the protesters has been purely symbolic, an act of radical and collective civil disobedience. They suspended the authority of the state – it was not just an inner liberation, but a social act of breaking chains of servitude. The physical violence was done by the hired Mubarak thugs entering Tahrir Square on horses and camels and beating people; the most protesters did was defend themselves. Although combative, the message of the protesters has not been one of killing. The demand was for Mubarak to go, and thus open up the space for freedom in Egypt, a freedom from which no one is excluded – the protesters' call to the army, and even the hated police, was not "Death to you!", but "We are brothers! Join us!". This feature clearly distinguishes an emancipatory demonstration from a rightwing populist one: although the right's mobilisation proclaims the organic unity of the people, it is a unity sustained by a call to annihilate the designated enemy (Jews, traitors). So where are we now? When an authoritarian regime approaches the final crisis, its dissolution tends to follow two steps. Before its actual collapse, a rupture takes place: all of a sudden people know that the game is over, they are simply no longer afraid. It is not only that the regime loses its legitimacy; its exercise of power itself is perceived as an impotent panic reaction. We all know the classic scene from cartoons: the cat reaches a precipice but goes on walking, ignoring the fact that there is no ground under its feet; it starts to fall only when it looks down and notices the abyss. When it loses its authority, the regime is like a cat above the precipice: in order to fall, it only has to be reminded to look down … In Shah of Shahs, a classic account of the Khomeini revolution, Ryszard Kapuscinski located the precise moment of this rupture: at a Tehran crossroads, a single demonstrator refused to budge when a policeman shouted at him to move, and the embarrassed policeman withdrew; within hours, all Tehran knew about this incident, and although street fights went on for weeks, everyone somehow knew the game was over. Is something similar going on in Egypt? For a couple of days at the beginning, it looked like Mubarak was already in the situation of the proverbial cat. Then we saw a well-planned operation to kidnap the revolution. The obscenity of this was breathtaking: the new vice-president, Omar Suleiman, a former secret police chief responsible for mass tortures, presented himself as the "human face" of the regime, the person to oversee the transition to democracy. Egypt's struggle of endurance is not a conflict of visions, it is the conflict between a vision of freedom and a blind clinging to power that uses all means possible – terror, lack of food, simple tiredness, bribery with raised salaries – to squash the will to freedom. When President Obama welcomed the uprising as a legitimate expression of opinion that needs to be acknowledged by the government, the confusion was total: the crowds in Cairo and Alexandria did not want their demands to be acknowledged by the government, they denied the very legitimacy of the government. They didn't want the Mubarak regime as a partner in a dialogue, they wanted Mubarak to go. They didn't simply want a new government that would listen to their opinion, they wanted to reshape the entire state. They don't have an opinion, they are the truth of the situation in Egypt. Mubarak understands this much better than Obama: there is no room for compromise here, as there was none when the Communist regimes were challenged in the late 1980s. Either the entire Mubarak power edifice falls down, or the uprising is co-opted and betrayed. And what about the fear that, after the fall of Mubarak, the new government will be hostile towards Israel? If the new government is genuinely the expression of a people that proudly enjoys its freedom, then there is nothing to fear: antisemitism can only grow in conditions of despair and oppression. (A CNN report from an Egyptian province showed how the government is spreading rumours there that the organisers of the protests and foreign journalists were sent by the Jews to weaken Egypt – so much for Mubarak as a friend of the Jews.) One of the cruellest ironies of the current situation is the west's concern that the transition should proceed in a "lawful" way – as if Egypt had the rule of law until now. Are we already forgetting that, for many long years, Egypt was in a permanent state of emergency? Mubarak suspended the rule of law, keeping the entire country in a state of political immobility, stifling genuine political life. It makes sense that so many people on the streets of Cairo claim that they now feel alive for the first time in their lives. Whatever happens next, what is crucial is that this sense of "feeling alive" is not buried by cynical realpolitik. • Slavoj Žižek is co-editor of The Idea of Communism, published by Verso Books. # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mail.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime(a)kein.org -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Commons Strategies Group, http://www.commonsstrategies.org/

Fwd: Jews & Spiritual Progressives Welcome Mubarak Resignation; but not a military or "security" force coup to replace him
by Michel Bauwens 12 Feb '11

12 Feb '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Rabbi Michael Lerner <rabbilerner(a)tikkun.org> Date: Sat, Feb 12, 2011 at 4:17 AM Subject: Jews & Spiritual Progressives Welcome Mubarak Resignation; but not a military or "security" force coup to replace him To: Michelsub2004(a)gmail.com *Jews & Spiritual Progressives Welcome Mubarak Resignation; but not a military or "security" force coup to replace him* Tikkun magazine's editor Rabbi Michael Lerner and the Network of Spiritual Progressives issued the following statement on Friday, February 10th: *Jews and Spiritual Progressives of every religious community are rejoicing at the triumph of the democratic uprising in the streets of Cairo and other Egyptian cities and at the resignation of President Mubarak.* *But we have no illusions that the struggle for democracy has been won*. We are fearful that the US and others who seek "stability" rather than "democracy" may accept a new autocratic regime under the leadership of Vice President Omar Suleiman (the US ally who played a significant role in the torture operations in Egypt) or under the leadership of a "soft" military coup in which the Army becomes the primary force in Egypt. Nor would we welcome a government dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood, though they have a legitimate role to play in any new government. It remains to be seen if a genuine democratic process takes place, or merely a military and security forces controled process leading to elections that reflect the desires of the military which might continue to control the media and the security forces. Here is what we would look for to see if this is really a democratic transformation: 1. The immediate end of the Emergency Laws that have been in effect since 1972 and that have given the state powers that deny fundamental human rights for the Egyptian people. 2. The freeing of all political prisoners 3. A focus on economic justice for the poor (which is the majority of the population. A specific step would be to call for the West to immediately embrace a Global Marshall Plan whose first setting would be the Middle East countries. 4. The creation of a democratic transtion group representing all the different opposition factions as well as the Army and Mubarak's party, but the Army and the old regime having only a few representatives rather than dominating the process. 5. Immediate opening of the Egyptian television and other media to a wide variety of perspectives representing all the diferent factions in the Uprising including, but not dominated by, the Islamic forces or the Army. We are well aware that the Iranian revolution, at first a popular uprising, was taken over by extremist mullahs and turned into an oppressive dictatorship of the mullahs even as the forms of democracy and election of a president gave the pretense of democracy. We do not want that to happen in Egypt, which is one reason we have called upon the US, Israel and the Western countries to embrace the democratic forces rather than hope for "stability" through military control. Only an unequivocal and massive set of political moves by the US and Israel, including an end to the Occupation of the West Bank and the blockade of Gaza, would convey to the Egyptian people that the US and Israel had really gotten the message that supporting Mubarak's repressive regime was a mistake and that they truly respect the masses of the Arab world and wish to be partners with them rather than seek to dominate them. All this is a major religious and spiritual celebration. Though the right-wing government of Israel and the Jewish establishment in the U.S. have called on the US to support "stability" rather than democracy, the vast majority of Jews in the US and around the world have celebrated the Egyptian uprising, and while feeling concerned that it not be taken over by anti-Israel elements who might seek a war with Israel, we recognize the Biblical legacy of the need to overthrow the Pharoahs of Egypt and "let the people go." Western religions including Islam retain the story of the Israelite freedom struggle retold in the Bible. Jews celebrate that liberation every Sabbath and on Passover. That ancient story has predisposed many in these Wester spiriutal tradition to favor every liberation struggle in the contemporary world!!!! We will not be fooled by a new Pharoah to replace the old Pharoah, whether the new Pharoah is Suleiman or the army or an Islamic dictatorship. But none of these concerns will overshadow our current rejoicing at the overthrow of Mubarak. This joyous moment reminds us once again of Tikkun's main lesson: *DO NOT BE REALISTIC.* Never allow the people with power in the economy, politics or the media to tell you that fundamental change is "unrealistic" and that you must settle for minor reforms while keeping the fundamental problems untouched. Remember that this kind of advice was in place in Egypt four weeks ago, and that ordinary people, not big shots, just little guys like us, changed history! And remind those who tell you that the goal of a Global Marshall Plan <http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=UZ6wxRhO5WPmkywEECFK…>or of an ESRA--Environmental and Social Responsibility Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (www.spiritualprogressives.org/ESRA)<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=0rxVdL3r7wfAoabKs5gI…>. Indeed, this is the moment to reaffirm our commitment to A New Bottom Line in both our personal and economic/political and social lives of love, kindness, generosity, ethical and ecological sensitivity and awe and wonder at the grandeur and mystery of the universe (or universes)--as embodied in the Spiritual Covenant wtih America<http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=N%2BxNivZ0gsm%2Fo8mI…>. Remind the pessimists, cynics, skeptics and "realists" in your life of the following basic truth that they could have learned from the Bible, from the 60s, from the huge advances made by the civil rights, women's and glbtq movements, and now from Tunisia and Egypt: *YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT IS POSSIBLE UNTIL YOU ENGAGE IN SUSTAINED STRUGGLE FOR WHAT IS ETHICALLY DESIRABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLLY NECESSARY.* Help us spread this kind of message. To: dante.monson(a)gmail.com <http://www.blogjump.eu> FOREWORD BY ISABELLA LENARDUZZI *Will flexibility keep women in companies?*<http://www.blogjump.eu/?p=13396> During the last Economic Forum at Davos, Manpower referred to the "human era<http://www.blogjump.eu/?p=13411>". In other words it is no longer the capital of a company that is the engine for growth and performance but individual talent. So after the industrial era, the spatial era, the information era, we now have the human era. Progress is only possible if we have the right skills, at the right place and at the right time. Finding the talent will be more important than finding the finance. Manpower calls this a pass from capitalism to "talentism". It is no longer the company but the talented people who determine when, where and how to work. We know that women are three times more likely than men to leave a company or their position (opt out) when the pressure of responsibility starts to accumulate. This includes: long working hours, business trips, constant availability, profit and loss responsibility, unforeseen workloads, number of people to manage, and so on. These losses for a company arrive at a time when managers start to take on more managerial functions (around 40 years old). A waste of talent at this stage is devastating for the company. It is only for the women who have taken on these roles throughout their careers that at the age of 56 their professional ambitions become on an equal footing with men. The consultancy firm Bain & Company published a report at the end of 2010 studying the impact of the measures of flexible working time and the levels of careers of women and men. Their findings were twofold: In order that these flexible programmes work effectively they have to be tailored to correspond to an individual's needs. Employees need to be convinced that flexibility will not penalise the careers of those who use it. So, company leaders, men and women, should set the example by using the system. >From the moment when these two basic principles are respected, the results are very effective in retaining the best employees, ensuring that they remain satisfied and loyal: 25% increase in retaining men but 40% in retaining women. We know that satisfaction is becoming more and more important for younger generations. Therefore it's becoming imperative that we address flexible working time. The JUMP Forum <http://www.forumjump.be> on the 5 May will organise a conference on the theme of flexibility when the author of the study will be present to explain the analysis. We will have some examples of how it works in practice. For example, Deloitte has launched the "Mass Career Customisation" in France and the Netherlands. The principle is that from now on all careers change and are no longer linear "from corporate ladder to corporate lattice". All Deloitte employees can speak about their careers every year with their line managers, covering four areas: the rhythm, the role, the workload as well as the hours and place of work. The pilot projects were highly successful and users were satisfied with this new tool giving them the power to constantly reassess their careers, in function with their family lives. It is even more important now in the US where 87% of couples both work! So what's good for women is also good for men. Measuring flexibility to ensure that companies retain the most talented individuals is long over due.
