new capitalism and commoning
by Michel Bauwens 04 May '11

04 May '11

I got this from Pat Kane, an initiative that resonates with Umair Haque's Capitalist Manifesto See: http://fearlessrevolution.com/blog/introducing-common.html "Benefiting people, communities, society, the environment and future generations is the new advantage in business. Our *new capitalist* brand is about transitioning from competitive advantage to collaborative advantage. COMMON is a brand that is community designed, community owned, and community directed. It is a single open source brand — a living network — for rapidly prototyping many progressive businesses that unleash creativity to solve social problems." Michel's comments: why is this interesting, well, in the context of the stress that our friends like Massimo and Silvia Federico place on opposing 'capitalist commons' my question is the following, generally, as I don't know much about this particular initiative: - are these people 'enemies' simply because they are 'pro-capitalist' - or are they friends because their heart is in the right place, and they want to create and share value, and have generally progressive social goals This is not just a matter of analysis, but also of language, and it poses a key question: should a new 'hegemony' (not the right word, I know, but even in a distributed world, something like that does exist) for a progressive commons approach, not necessarily include progressive social and other enterpreneurs ? My answer would tend to be yes, as many young people in the West, but even outside the West, especially here in East Asia, think that way; they want to see progress, don't believe in old-style socialism, believe in cooperation and sharing, but believe only free enterpreneurship offers progress and dynamism for their society and their own projects. Such an approach would require an analysis that distinguished exploitative commons approaches, from genuine commons; but also in a language that doesn't construct such people as enemies, and a pragmatic openness. To come back to the notion of capitalist/anticapitalist commons, through an example. Take the free software movement, a movement of a particular labour aristocracy, that has resulted in the creation of a strong commons, strong relatively autonomous communities, but also with a strong ecology of supportive corporate entities, that both profit from those commons, but also, pay wages to free software developers, practice various forms of benefit sharing, and support the communities and commons in various ways. (this of course needs to be problematized, but nevertheless, this is an important side of the equation) So here we have a commons that is both instrumental to corporate entities and 'capitalism', but also beneficial in substantial ways to a particular type of knowledge workers. In this scenario, both sides have both concurring and antagonistic interests. The model of the free software movement is not unique, as it is now largely replicated in many other open knowledge, open design and open manufacturing projects, for whom it served as a successfull template I'm not advocating either uncritical support of the model, nor a pure antagonistic approach, but rather an approach that starts with the interests of the peer producing communities and their commons, and looks at how they can optimally reproduce within current economic and power structures, and advance their goals, step by step, until they are stronger to achieve more fundamental transformations, In many cases, the creation of a successful ecology of corporate entities, and the attraction of progressive young enterpreneurs who may be willing to create non profit maximisation market-operating entitities, will be a sine qua non for the social reproduction and growth of the concrete commons and their contributors/users Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens Commons Strategies Group, http://www.commonsstrategies.org/

Unions for Immaterial Production?
by Patrick Anderson 10 Mar '11

10 Mar '11

The effectiveness of collective bargaining has always been threatened by independent peers who are willing to accept lower wages and endure poor working conditions. For traditional manufacturing jobs, these 'alternate' workers can usually be kept from accessing the Means of Production by forming a physical barrier around the worksite or through various threats that can be carried out because it is easy to monitor who is actually entering the establishment. Yet these valuable techniques of intimidation and coercion so vital to protecting Worker Rights are unlikely to be applicable in the realm of "immaterial production". When it comes to something like Free Software, how can we, the International Programmers of the World, unionize effectively to *stop* independent programmers from creating the solutions that consumers need? This is a catastrophic issue, as many of these independents are willing to work not just for a low Wage, but for Free! They often fix bugs and add features without any pay at all! How can workers in the 'immaterial' sphere possibly "make a living" with such anarchy and disrespect for organized labor, and with no ability to stop that production?

"The currency is not the debt"
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 02 Mar '11

02 Mar '11

This message from Chris Cook is interesting to me... It initially makes me feel there are "different vectors", used as tools, which may have accounting equivalents, and can spark confusion as to what is what ? excerpt : *" The currency is not the debt, but a credit instrument identical to those issued by government. "* plus ci dessous... ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Chris Date: Sat, Feb 26, 2011 at 3:05 PM Subject: [gang8] ....of Public Credit To: gang8(a)yahoogroups.com Dear Gang I made the following response to someone in a forum on 'Public Banking' who was repeating the fallacy that money is debt. It covers quite a bit of ground, actually, and I'd be interested to see if the Gang can pick holes in it Best Regards Chris Cook >> I'm afraid you share a fundamental misconception in relation to the money created by banks, which is in fact a credit instrument, not a debt instrument. When private banks create credit they create a virtual IOU as an accounting object. This interest-free IOU is a 'look-alike' of the interest-free IOU issued by Central Banks, and is routinely exchanged for such notes and coin in private hands when they are 'deposited' in the banks. It is currency created as an object or thing to which account owners have title. When a private bank lends this currency into existence it is creating BOTH the currency AND the interest-bearing loan relationship with the borrower under a debt contract. The currency is not the debt, but a credit instrument identical to those issued by government. The debt is created in exchange for the use over time of the currency. When a private bank spends currency into existence it creates virtual credit instruments, and 'deposits' these into the accounts of suppliers, staff, management or shareholders by crediting them with an entitlement to these virtual assets. These credit instruments/IOUs are accepted by governments in payment of taxes, and that is what gives them their value. There is functionally no difference between an invoice issued by a private business for private services rendered, and a tax demand issued for government services rendered. Likewise, the issue by government of an undated IOU redeemable against taxes is functionally equivalent to the issue by a private business of an undated IOU redeemable against goods and services. eg Air Miles, Store Loyalty points, or the well known DeliDollars. Government IOUs differ from private ones in that they are made universally acceptable against debts by 'legal tender' laws aka by government fiat. So in a nutshell, governments do not create debt when they 'print money' and spend it. Government IOUs are in fact credit instruments analogous to a form of undated non interest-bearing redeemable preference share. Of course, these credit instruments must be issued and spent sensibly, and not in relation to existing assets, where they will cause inflation as the private banks demonstrated by creating the property bubble. In my view public credit need not be inflationary if used to facilitate the circulation of goods and services and the creation of new productive assets, such as affordable housing; renewable energy and energy saving projects; infrastructure such as transport, schools and hospitals, and of course on training and education of the population to enable them to create these assets. Such public credit creation should be professionally managed by service providers with a stake in the outcome, and accountably overseen by a Monetary Authority (as in Hong Kong, where there is no Central Bank). Once productive assets are created with public credit, they may then be refinanced by private investment in long term credit based upon their productive value (eg rental flows and energy flows). In this way pension investment will enable the public credit used to create new assets to be retired and recycled. Likewise, the newly productive workforce will pay taxes, which again will retire and recycle the public credit which made the workforce productive. >> __._,_.___ Reply to sender<cojock(a)hotmail.com?subject=Re%3A%20%2E%2E%2E%2Eof%20Public%20Credit%20>| Reply to group<[email protected]?subject=Re%3A%20%2E%2E%2E%2Eof%20Public%20Credit%20>| Reply via web post<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJxNG1xa2JqBF9TAzk3MzU5N…>| Start a New Topic<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJlZmxpNDBlBF9TAzk3MzU5N…> Messages in this topic<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8/message/15603;_ylc=X3oDMTM2MnNoY2QxBF9T…>( 1) Recent Activity: Visit Your Group<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gang8;_ylc=X3oDMTJldTRwN25hBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BG…> The gang8 list is devoted to Creditary Economics. Fwd: New moneyless economic system described
by Michel Bauwens 01 Mar '11

01 Mar '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tomi Astikainen <tomi.astikainen(a)mindyourelephant.org> Date: Wed, Feb 23, 2011 at 9:53 PM Subject: New economic system To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Hi Michel, Long time no talk. Hope everything is fine and dandy with you and your endeavors of openness? Maybe you have noticed that I launched a new book: www.tomiastikainen.com Today I was writing more extensive stuff for the FAQ about moneyless living and when writing about new (moneyless) economic system I thought of you. Text: *How would you re-design a more sustainable economic system?* Short answer: I would design it with others, *sharing*<http://p2pfoundation.net/Sharing>resources and perspectives in *open collaboration* <http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:Open#Introduction>, and leaving room for constant evolution of the system. In fact, the very fact that you are on this site proves that the re-design process has started among the people of the Earth, in a very unique fashion: from the ground up instead of top-down. Professor *Tim Jackson*<http://www.earthscan.co.uk/ProsperityWithoutGrowth/tabid/102098/Default.aspx>says “Sustainability is the art of living well within ecological limits” where “living well” implies both ethical behavior and comfort. Thus, a more just and sustainable system is found in the crossroads of efficiency, environment, equity and ethics. The basic requirements of a sustainable economic system are that it is able to: 1. meet basic human needs of the whole global population, 2. take the carrying capacity of the Earth into account, 3. allow the diversity of life to flourish now and in the future, and 4. ensure both human and societal development The basic components of an economic system are: 1. Need clarification, 2. Resource extraction, 3. Production, 4. Distribution, 5. Use of the produce, and 6. Re-use of resources *Needs* Market equilibrium, i.e. balance between supply and demand, has not been reached in top-down approaches. Capitalism is producer-driven guesswork vulnerable to formation of monopolies and distorted by profit-motive driven creation of artificial needs. On the other hand, the central-planning of socialism and communism cannot answer to rapid changes of people’s real needs and preferences. In a moneyless society the basic needs for survival are quite easy to fulfill because we all need nutritious food, warm clothes, comfortable shelter, clean water, functioning sanitation and all that. The human needs that guide the basic production are somewhat unchanged and predictable. However, there are more advanced needs that derive from individual preferences, interpersonal relationships and from ideas for societal development. An individual might want to create a piece of art that requires equipment, two people in different geographic locations might want to meet each other out of a whim and a research team might realize that a bridge needs to be built to link two cities together. In order to enable all this, people need to have an easy means to express their changing needs so that required products and services can be delivered. We do this already: we order stuff from Amazon, we book trips over internet and we create wikis and documents together with our peers and professional colleagues to plan larger projects. All we need to do is to link the information systems we already have, open them up to public scrutiny and make these massive amounts of data accessible in a common database that can guide production decisions. If it seems that we cannot possibly fulfill everyone’s needs without exceeding the carrying capacity of the Earth (not enough resources to make everything happen at once), we can then assign numerical values for resources, e.g. time and amount needed for a final product. And then we can utilize various mobile and internet technologies to design tools that allow people to “vote” on a daily basis to inform production of their needs, i.e. use direct democracy to guide the production decisions. *Material and energy extraction* The sporadic, short-sighted and predatory resource extraction of today cannot continue much longer. The same goes for fossil-fuel based and highly centralized energy production and distribution. In a moneyless society all energy comes directly or indirectly from the sun (including geothermal, wave, tidal, and wind energy). *Jeremy Rifkin*<http://p2pfoundation.net/InterGrid>talks about the “Inter-grid” – the internet of energy – where all of us are both consumers and producers of energy. It is possible to set up with current day technology, today, if we want it to happen. For the material extraction to be sustainable we need to understand where, how much and what kind of resources we have. This applies both to untapped sources and products that can be re-used. *Manufacturing process* In our current system there is a whole lot of overlap in production: competing organizations create similar products and services with lowest possible cost – often leading to poor quality products – and they all try to sell their stuff to the consumers with whatever the means, creating a lot of artificial needs and desires in the process of doing so. In a sane sustainable system we would produce exactly what is needed, as locally as possible, to as many as possible, with as little waste as possible. The shifting needs “from bombs to food” would take us little by little towards abundance. Automation would no longer be viewed as the evil machines that take people’s jobs but as a means to set people free from the drudgery of manual labor, bearing in mind that nothing would stop you from growing your own carrots or knitting your woolen socks. *Distribution* Nowadays we ship stuff all over the world without much thinking of the consequences. Raw materials are shipped to where it’s cheapest to produce something out of them. Then this produce is shipped to be processed where it’s cheapest to do. The cargo then moves through various assembly points to the wholesaler, to the retail store and finally consumers pick it up and ship it to their homes. They use it, trash it and the junk is shipped to the other side of the world. Rational? No. Cheap? Hell yeah! Distribution in a moneyless society should minimize the distance (i.e. energy use) and maximize the ease and access of use. Most of the food would probably be wisest to deliver to large restaurants or community kitchens in large quantities. Consumer goods such as toiletries could have filling stations where anyone could fill up their soap bottle near where they live. Durable goods, such as furniture, could be ordered directly to your home from the manufacturer. The latest consumer electronics, appliances and tools could be borrowed from a local “library”. If it would seem that transferring some of the products to another side of the world is not sustainable then distribution would also guide production decisions, and alternatives would be found. We might come into conclusions such as using *the common sea-buckthorn*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippophae_rhamnoides>for pepping up people in the Northern hemisphere and leaving the luxury of sipping coffee for those living in areas where it’s viable to produce locally. Please note that hard-core coffee addicts would always be welcome to relocate to South America if that is what they value in life. We would supplement, and over-time probably replace, the current marine, air, train and road cargo services with new more efficient technologies such as *Evacuated Tube Transport* <http://et3.com/ett.asp>. *Use* Currently many people buy stuff to feel happy. People want to own a sleek car to show off their prosperity. This ego-driven material happiness doesn’t last long, however. Little by little people are waking up to feel the void within. To fill that void they need love and better relationships, education, culture and arts, time for reflection and experiences in nature. And yes, most people on this planet need to eat. More important than ownership is access to goods and services that fulfill our real needs. In a moneyless society people would use the products and services that they need to live a good life. You’d be surprised how this might actually be much less – not more – than what an average person owns nowadays. And through sharing durable goods many more people could have access to what they need. The same goes for services: it’s much wiser to use highly effective and comfortable *public transportation*<http://www.zeitnews.org/transportation/>that always takes you to your destination, rather than worry about fixing and maintaining your car that sits on the parking lot for 95% of the time. Hoarding junk just doesn’t make sense, especially if everything is *freely available* <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Free_good>. *Re-use* Today we live in *the culture of disposability*<http://www.kerismith.com/blog/the-culture-of-disposability-part-2/>and most of the stuff we use ends up in landfills. Even fast moving consumer goods such as oil and jelly is packed in plastic or glass containers that are not going to decompose any time soon. As for the durable goods, just by sharing efficiently what we already have we could for instance have free clothes for the next 10 years. Re-use has to be designed into the whole process so that each product has gone through a proper *cradle-to-crave assessment*<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_cycle_assessment>. If we take this seriously we can soon imitate nature where everything that is disposed of becomes quickly used again in another part of the process we call life.

Solid State, and Liquid Nets
by Kevin Carson 28 Feb '11

28 Feb '11

Sent to you by Kevin Carson via Google Reader: Solid State, and Liquid Nets via Andrew B. Watt's Blog by Andrew on 2/27/11 First watch this talk, And then this one. Go ahead. I’ll wait. Back? Feel like you wasted forty minutes of your life? OK, I’m sorry. Tell you what… you don’t need to read this entry of my blog. Then you won’t have wasted an hour. That should save you some time. But if you’re planning on sticking around, know that this is some of the problem I’m wrestling with. It may, in fact, be the problem that teachers all around the world are wrestling with. To sum it up as clearly as I can: How do we take solid-state schools — that is, institutions that are designed to do one thing according to a model with relatively little variability — and graft onto them these liquid networks, which are flexible, innovating, and constantly learning new skills and trading new ideas? I had dinner with a friend of mine last night, and we kept talking around the question. He’s a floral designer, an artist, an actor, a writer, a playwright, a director, and a sculptor, and he’s getting to be nationally known. So when he tells me that (for him) it was all about developing fluency with a set of tools, I tend to believe him. When I asked him to identify his four most important tools, he spoke of his knife, the bowls and urns and vases that contain his work, the flowers themselves, and glue. He said, “without wire, I’d need glue. With wire, I’d still need glue.” I know that working with cord and twine and rope, I gain fluency by learning new knots. The more knots I know, the more interesting and unusual things I do. Same with artists’ pens and paper — the more kinds I work with, the better I do as an artist. All through this vacation which ends tomorrow, I’ve been wondering about how to help my students develop their own liquid networks — systems of self-support and learning environments that help them find the information they want, instead of forcing specific information at them. I think it’s one of the major challenges of our time, and I wish I knew how to move the conversation forward. Filed under: Teaching Things you can do from here: - Subscribe to Andrew B.
