Weber The publication has been supported by EU COST – European Cooperation in Science and Technology and the EU COST Action IS0807 “Living in Surveillance Societies“. This book is the first ever published volume that is dedicated to Internet surveillance in the age of what has come to be termed “social media” or “web 2.0″ (blogs, wikis, file sharing, social networking sites, microblogs, user-generated content sites, etc). The Internet has been transformed in the past years from a system primarily oriented on information provision into a medium for communication and community-building. The notion of “Web 2.0”, social software, and social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and MySpace have emerged in this context. With such platforms comes the massive provision and storage of personal data that are systematically evaluated, marketed, and used for targeting users with advertising. In a world of global economic competition, economic crisis, and fear of terrorism after 9/11, both corporations and state institutions have a growing interest in accessing this personal data. Here, contributors explore this changing landscape by addressing topics such as commercial data collection by advertising, consumer sites and interactive media; self-disclosure in the social web; surveillance of file-sharers; privacy in the age of the internet; civil watch-surveillance on social networking sites; and networked interactive surveillance in transnational space. This book is a result of a research action launched by the intergovernmental network COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology). -- Prof. Christian Fuchs Chair in Media and Communication Studies Department of Informatics and Media Uppsala University Kyrkogårdsgatan 10 Box 513 751 20 Uppsala Sweden christian.fuchs(a)im.uu.se Tel +46 (0) 18 471 1019 http://fuchs.uti.at http://www.im.uu.se NetPolitics Blog: http://fuchs.uti.at/blog Editor of tripleC: http://www.triple-c.se Book "Foundations of Critical Media and Information Studies" (Routledge 2011) Book "Internet and Society" (Paperback, Routledge 2010) # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mx.kein.org/mailman/**listinfo/nettime-l<http://mx.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l> # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime(a)kein.org -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: My Declaration of Independence

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jeffrey Sterling <teleboiski(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Oct 21, 2011 at 9:17 PM Subject: My Declaration of Independence To: Any feedback, publicity or contribution is greatly appreciated. Nice to meet you all! -Jeff Sterling +1 425 299 1969 My Declaration of Independence A Collective Consciousness wormhole is opening and is showing us the Way to a Sustainable Future. People are ready for Change. We are ready to Change from a world of Scarcity to a world of Abundance. We are ready to Change from a world of Domination to a world of Cooperation. The Great Awakening is upon us. Humanity is broken and Nature is suffering. It is time to save our Living Ecosystem. Corporations are NOT part of a Living Ecosystem. Governments are NOT part of a Living Ecosystem. Corporations and Governments have devolved into a parasitic force that is sucking the life out of the People and Nature. Indigenous People have been destroyed by an amalgam of Imperialism, Colonialism, and Corporatism over the past 500 years and now this Corporatist juggernaut is pillaging its own societies in the name of unsustainable growth. The Economic Rapture has occurred and 99.9% of Humanity has been left behind. ENOUGH! This is our Last Chance to save Civilization. We have been rehearsing for this moment our entire lives. These Occupied Sites are our sandbox to Play and Learn how to be Human Beings again and not some mechanistic part of Corporatist Culture. These are Intentional Communities. They are by the People and for the People. We must renew our sense of Community by sharing and caring and collaborating and creating Indigenous Living Economies. We are creating a new Social Contract that includes ONLY People and Nature. The Intellectual Commons is our birthright and cannot subjugated by the Corporatist Culture. Corporations are NOT People! Governments are NOT People! And People are a Sovereign part of Nature. As we create Intentional Communities, we can turn homeless camps into Eco-villages, we can build Resilient Communities where we can follow our passions to build a distributed and decentralized network of Indigenous Living Economies that are in balance with Nature. We need Occupied Teach-ins, we need Occupied Universities, we need to spread the Word of Liberation and Empowerment. Let’s Change the World in the name of the People and Nature! I sent out an article from ZeroHedge yesterday re OWS &Tea Party joining forces again our masters in DC & Wall St. Should I be surprised at no comments? I What was wrong about the Venn Diagram? I strongly dislike the Evangelical Hawkish group in the Tea Party but understand that one loud push on a few shared issues could be most effective. Do the OWS leaders have to have it all their way?

Is the Internet a disenchanted space for artists and creative people or is there a future for online arts and critical creative actions? If so, what are their possible forms and directions? This is what WJ-Spots Brussels proposes to investigate by gathering an international panel of some of the most influential net artists, theorists, online activists and digital cultures thinkers who will share their views on the past and future of artistic creation on the Internet An immersive performance of live websurfing and speeches The format of this event will be far away from a usual conference: during the speeches, assistants using the WJ-Spots platform will be surfing live through a list of representative websites selected by the speaker. A multi-screen system is used to display those pages around the audience. The proceedings of the WJ-Spots Brussels event will be published in early 2012 as a special edition of the MCD magazine, and as video documents made available on the Digitalarti and iMAL websites. * With: *Raphaël Bastide <http://www.raphaelbastide.com> & Yannick Antoine<http://yhnck.com/>(FR/BE, artists), Michel Bauwens <http://p2pfoundation.net/> (BE, p2p2foundation), Josephine Bosma<http://www.josephinebosma.com/>(NL, journalist and critic), Heath Bunting <http://www.irational.org/heath/> (UK, artist), Paolo Cirio<http://www.paolocirio.net/>(IT, artist), Florian Cramer <http://pleintekst.nl/> (NL, Professor at Piet Zwart Institute<http://pzwart.wdka.nl/networked-media/2010/01/02/florian-cramer/>), Régine Debatty <http://www.we-make-money-not-art.com/> (BE, we-make-money-not-art, journalist and critic), Constant Dullaart<http://www.organizationname.org/>(NL, artist), Jodi <http://www.jodi.org/> (BE/NL, artists), Alessandro Ludovico<http://www.neural.it/>(IT, neural.it), Nicolas Malevé <http://www.constantvzw.org/> (BE, Constantvzw), Miltos Manetas <http://manetas.com/> (GR, artist), Julian Oliver<http://julianoliver.com/>(NZ/DE, artist), Domenico Quaranta <http://domenicoquaranta.com/> (IT, contemporary art critic and curator), Rafael Rozendaal <http://newrafael.com> (NL, artist), Sakrowsky<http://curatingyoutube.net>(DE, curatingYouTube), Gordan Savicic <http://www.yugo.at/processing/> (AT, artist). *Practical info* *First session*: 15:00 - 18:00 *Second session*: 20:00 - 23:00 *Thanks to register online<http://www.imal.org/activity/wj-spots-brussels/register>if you wish to attend this event! * *Free entrance!* Bar open. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] EU Parliament Massively Commits to Net Neutrality and Open Internet
by Michel Bauwens 23 Nov '11

23 Nov '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Thu, Nov 17, 2011 at 6:43 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] EU Parliament Massively Commits to Net Neutrality and Open Internet To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/eu-parliament-massively-commits-to-net-neut… EU Parliament Massively Commits to Net Neutrality and Open Internet *** Paris, November 17th, 2011 – The European Parliament today massively adopted its resolution on Net neutrality, calling on the EU Commission to protect the open Internet, which is put at risk by an increasing number of restrictions imposed by telecoms operators. This overall positive resolution urges EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes to depart from her failed wait-and-see approach by rapidly assessing the need for further regulation to keep the Internet open and free. This votes represent a political commitment by the European Parliament to protecting the Internet from any form of restriction or censorship. *** The EU Parliament's adoption of a resolution on Net neutrality [1] by a massive majority comes at a timely moment, as the EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda Neelie Kroes keeps denying [2] the illegitimate restrictions to Internet access imposed by operators that are reported all over Europe, as evidenced by the citizen platform RespectMyNet. This vote is also a signal sent to BEREC – the body of EU telecoms regulators, which is expected to soon release its anticipated study on Net neutrality violations [3] – as the Members of the EU Parliament point to the dangers of access restrictions for freedom of communication, as well as competition and innovation in the digital economy. Even though the resolution contains loopholes [4], it is a strong political statement in favour of an open Internet. In particular, the Parliament requires the Commission to swiftly assess the need for further regulation to protect Net neutrality, as soon as BEREC concludes its fact-finding exercise [5]. “EU telecoms operators already violate Net neutrality in large numbers [6] by illegitimately restricting Internet access. If Commissioner Neelie Kroes is really committed to defending freedom of expression, as she has claimed in the past, she must act accordingly by imposing Net neutrality by law, as was done in the Netherlands. Today's massive vote by EU Parliament certainly increases the pressure on the Commission to effectively guarantee competition and innovation as well as citizens' freedom of expression and privacy online. As the EU Parliament commits to defending the Net's openness, it should now act by further pushing for an effective regulation and rejecting any attempt at imposing Internet access restrictions or censorship in the name of an obsolete copyright regime, such as ACTA.”, said Jérémie Zimmermann, spokesperson of citizen advocacy group La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?type=MOTION&reference=B7-2011… 2. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Private Copying: French Parliament Downsizes The Public's Rights

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <jz(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Wed, Nov 23, 2011 at 6:18 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Private Copying: French Parliament Downsizes The Public's Rights To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net La Quadrature du Net - For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/private-copying-french-parliament-downsizes… Private Copying: French Parliament Downsizes The Public's Rights *** Paris, November 23rd, 2011 – Members of the French Parliament are using a bill on private copying levy as an occasion to kill the copyright exception for private copying. Under the pretense of saving royalties collection, MPs have redefined fair use in the process. Giving in once more to pressure from the recording and movie industry, the French Parliament carries on Nicolas Sarkozy's repressive policy against the Internet and new cultural practices. *** Today, the French National Assembly begins express examination of the bill on private copying levy. Though this bill [1] is aimed at adapting the private copying levy to national and EU case law, Members of the Parliaments are giving in to the copyright industry's request to further narrow down fair use and the rights of the public. Indeed, a crucial amendment aims at conditioning the benefit of the exception for private copying to the legality of the sources used [2]. By introducing this notion of “lawfulness of the source”, MPs are forcing everyone to proceed to an in-depth legal analysis based on mostly impossible to determine elements in order to make a private copy. Was the source used to make a private copy lawful? If it was disseminated online, who uploaded it? Did this person have the author's authorisation? etc. Such questions will never, in practical terms, have an answer and will make copying unlawful by default. “By narrowing down the scope of the exception in this way, the public are being deprived of its rights. After years of a ruthless war against the sharing of culture between individuals on the Internet, French authors' rights law is hijacked once more by vested interests who want to protect their obsolete business models by limiting recognised user prerogatives.”, said Philippe Aigrain, co-founder of La Quadrature du Net. “In the name of private copy levy, we are deprived of the right to copy! Such negation of the rights of the public is coherent with Nicolas Sarkozy's policies aimed at turning copyright into a repressive weapon against cultural practices in the hand of industrial lobbies. These political manoeuvres harm the legitimacy of copyright as a whole.”, said Jérémie Zimmermann, co-founder and spokesperson of the citizen organisation. * References * 1. http://www.assemblee-nationale.fr/13/dossiers/remuneration_copie_privee.asp 2.
