extremely rapid popular mobilizations
by Michel Bauwens 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

Dear friends, I'm guessing more of our sympathizers are following the recent events in Tunisia and Egypt, showing the acceleration of popular mobilizations that are due to the p2p infrastructures. Particularly interesting is the internet blackout in Egypt, and the various ways it has been overcome, Sepp, could you follow these alternatives in Egypt, for a review at some point, for example see http://www.readwriteweb.com/hack/2011/01/egypt-tor-use-skyrocketing-as.php I keep watch of such articles in P2P-Egypt and P2P-Infrastructure, thanks for keeping your eye on that ball, the idea is to have some sheet that can be used in future events, Michel -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Fwd: Chester Barnard - Resilience ( as organizational efficiency ) through motive satisfaction ?
by Michel Bauwens 01 Feb '11

01 Feb '11

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Feb 1, 2011 at 9:51 AM Subject: Chester Barnard - Resilience ( as organizational efficiency ) through motive satisfaction ? To: econowmix(a)googlegroups.com, Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_Barnard <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chester_Barnard>Barnard looked at organizations as systems of cooperation of human activity, and noted that they are typically short-lived. It is rare for a firm to last more than a century. Similarly most nations last for less than a century. The only organization that can claim a substantial age is the Roman Catholic Church<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Church>. According to Barnard, organizations are not long-lived because they do not meet the two criteria necessary for survival: effectiveness<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effectiveness> and efficiency <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Economic_efficiency>. Effectiveness, is defined the usual way: as being able to accomplish stated goals. In contrast, Barnard's meaning of organizational efficiency differed substantially from the conventional use of the word. He defined efficiency of an organization as the degree to which that organization is able to satisfy the motives <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motives> of the individuals. If an organization satisfies the motives of its members while attaining its explicit goals, cooperation among its members will last. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

The Open Data, Open Society survey is now open
by Marco Fioretti 31 Jan '11

31 Jan '11

Greetings Open Data, Open Society is a research project, financed through the European DIME network (www.dime-eu.org/) on the economical, social and political importance of open, raw Public Sector Information (PSI). The first part of the project was recently concluded with the publication of a report, which can be downloaded from http://dime-eu.org/editions or http://www.lem.sssup.it/books.html. The next step of the project is an online survey that just started and will close on 2011/05/22. The survey is open to official representatives of Cities or Regional administrations of the EU-15 countries. Its goal is to measure the degree of openness of the data produced by local Public Administrations of the European Union. Respondents are asked to state which data, among those produced by their Offices, are already published on-line, in which format and under which license. In order to know more about the survey and to register for it, please visit the survey introduction at https://opensurvey.sssup.it/wiki/en:start Thanks in advance for forwarding this announcement to whoever it may concern.
