hi bob, there are conflicts about fairness and fair rewards, which I would not call capitalist infighting, since it based on feelings of justice , reciprocity etc.. and then there are conflicts where people want more than the other, and use market dynamics to get it, is that the case in the faircoin community ? there is a paradox though, * sovereign money is still going strong * complementary curriencies exist in spades, but are everywhere really marginal * Crypto currencies have many problematic aspects, but they are generating massive investments in new infrastructures * we have theories of what money should be, but they are not implemented ... in that context, taking something that seems to take root, but transforming it to broader egaliterian interests, seems a good strategy On Tue, May 15, 2018 at 6:17 PM, Michael Linton <michael.linton(a)gmail.com> wrote: > There's much good thinking here, but thinking still inside the old > familiar box of asset, control, property, distribution .... > > So their ideas are still firmly embedded in systems of rivalrous > competition. > > The ends they project can be much more easily achieved by other means. Crucial insights into egaliterian potential of the crypto-economy
by Michel Bauwens 15 May '18

This article from Dick Bryan is the first one bringing it all together, giving clear criterial for p2p/commons oriented crypto developments, I had intuited some of them, but was not able to bring it all together yet as this author has: https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d Some criteria to look for (via Dick Bryan): - *1.* "Programmable organizations enable production to be organized in a way that makes social criteria the rationale for production; not a constraint on it." [1] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> - *2.* "The rise of ‘networks’ as modes of corporate organization breaks down the conventional means that differentiate one corporation from another and challenges the principle of ‘competition’ as the driver of corporate rationale. These are both issues that feature prominently in decentralized applications." [2] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> ** 3. Mechanisms, like tokens, that allow surplus value to be retained by the workers, not capital.* " Changes in the nature of work (precarization, casualization, subcontracting, the rise of the gig economy) see workers carrying greater risks and break down the attachment of work and living standards to employment. There is growing interest in alternative ways of organizing work." [3] <https://medium.com/econaut/what-is-a-crypto-economy-155bdbc4ab1d> *4.* "the real potential is cryptocurrencies as units of account: as modes of measuring economic activity that are conceived differently from those intrinsic to fiat money. Fiat money has become tied to conventional framings of profit and loss, income and expenditure, and a market-centred calculus. Non-fiat monies have the potential for developing new ways to calculate economic activity; ways that represent different social and economic values, and measure performance by criteria other than profit. Think about it for a moment. The unit of account potential signals the importance of the crypto economy developing ways (not a singular way, but coin-specific ways) of accounting and measuring the activities supported by each token. We see this as central to giving tokens a material basis in the crypto economy; not just leaving them as speculative stores of value. .... "Exchange is often between parties of unequal power, so mutual gain cannot be presumed. An important issue of the crypto economy is how blockchain can and cannot countermand asymmetrical power in trade. We see blockchain not facilitating frictionless markets but rather frictionless capital: distributed capital." It brings Marx’s revolutionary humanism to bear on the singularly critical task of the moment: opposing & defeating Trumpism and other far-right tendencies. We encourage everyone to read *Resisting Trumpist Reaction (and Left Accommodation*), to share it widely, and to discuss it with colleagues, friends, family––and with us. Beating back and transcending the latest wave of reaction requires wide and deep discussion among everyone fighting to protect liberal-democratic rights and to continue the struggle until we achieve full freedom for all human beings. ------------------------------ *Only $5 + shipping charges. **Order your copy here <https://marxisthumanistinitiative.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3bfae79…>* *.* ------------------------------ Key ideas in this pamphlet include the following: * It may not be possible to stop US president Donald Trump before he launches the country and the world into a monstrous war, even a nuclear war. Similarly, the real threat Trump poses to Americans’ civil rights and liberties could be just as fatal. The unthinkable must be acknowledged and our support for the Resistance to Trumpism must be intensified. * The ongoing activity of tens of millions of people resisting Trump and Trumpism is the principal reason why Trump has not yet done even more harm than he has done to date. The permanent state of revolt across the US underlines the Resistance movement’s firm and indefatigable commitment to get rid of Trump, not to reform him. * One notable feature of the Resistance is that women, and especially women of color––who know that Trumpism is a threat to people’s lives, and women’s bodies in particular––dominate the field in intensive, continual, and creative protesting. The convergence of the anti-racist and Resistance movements is likewise very significant, as is the fact that the leading edge of the Resistance also challenges the Democratic Party and its efforts to play “politics as usual.” * Marxist-Humanists must help to ensure that the Resistance remains independent, so that its goal of ending Trumpism will not be subsumed under alien agendas. Its independence from the Democratic Party is crucial, as is its independence from tendencies on “the left” that serve to normalize Trumpism by trying to divert the Resistance onto an “anti-neoliberal” path, a path that refuses to prioritize the fight against the extraordinary and distinctive dangers of Trumpist reaction. * We must also combat and root out the idea that the left can somehow win over Trump’s base and turn white nationalists towards revolutionary socialism. That is a pipe dream of a segment of “the left” that wants power for itself, and which acted in ways that helped Trump win the 2016 US election. We redouble our commitment to fight such accommodation. Trump must be removed and Trumpism must be rooted out. The left needs to stand for freedom and the rights of all human beings once again. * Although research shows conclusively that Trump’s election was not due to an uprising of the “white working class” against “economic distress” brought about by neoliberalism, that myth remains a key talking point of a newly-resurgent left-populist current. Left-populism seeks to win adherents by appealing to popular superstitions and myths, and by offering easy, inaccurate answers in response to popular discontent. It does not worry about the difficulty of delivering on its promises. This is what makes it populism. It is the trait it has most in common with Trumpism. * An opportunistic relationship to ideas cannot form the basis for a real left project that aims to confront the central contradictions of our era and to posit a way out of them. “Post-truth politics” is a direct impediment to the development of a clear understanding of our world and what is required to change it. And although emotional appeals and the like may help “the left” win new followers and elections, such opportunism reproduces the existing divisions between mental and manual labor and between leaders and the led. It thus represents a real barrier to the self-development of the working class as an independent force for human liberation. We need to wage an uncompromising battle against “post-truth politics.” * Far from being a revolt against neoliberalism, Trump’s election was actually an expression of a long-standing white-nationalist strain of US politics. It predates neoliberalism; it pervaded the campaigns of George Wallace in the 1960s and early 1970s, which, like Trump’s, were remarkably successful in the industrial Midwest. * Analyzing Marx’s writings on and activity around Irish independence and the US Civil War, we arrive at a unique conclusion regarding Trumpism and the “white working class. To fight white nationalism in the tradition of Marx, the way to solidarize with the “white working class” is by helping the Resistance to decisively defeat Trumpism and other far-right forces. Their defeat will help liberate the “white working class” from the grip of reaction and thereby spur the independent, emancipatory self-development of working people as a whole. ------------------------------ *New York City MHI Events, June 2-6* We’ll be at the Left Forum conference <https://marxisthumanistinitiative.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3bfae79…> at John Jay College in Manhattan, where we are sponsoring 3 panels to be held on* Sat. and Sun., June 2 and 3*. But it’s also thriving. Weekend Roundup: Distrust of elites is fueling a new type of democracy Democracy is in crisis. But it’s also thriving. Nathan Gardels, Editor in Chief Visit the WorldPost at http://www.theworldpost.com <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…> A referendum campaign poster for the “Save Our Swiss Gold” initiative in Zurich, Switzerland. The controversial referendum, which voters resoundingly rejected, aimed to force the Swiss National Bank to hold at least 20 percent of all assets in physical gold. Nov 21, 2014. (Erik Tham/Alamy Live News) “In the regions where it is more deeply rooted — the Americas and Europe — representative democracy is in crisis,” former Brazilian president Fernando Henrique Cardoso <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…> wrote in The WorldPost. “At the core of this crisis,” he continued, “is the widening gap between people’s aspirations and the capacity of political institutions to respond to the demands of society. It is one of the ironies of our age that this deficit of trust in political institutions coexists with the rise of citizens capable of making the choices that shape their lives and influence the future of their societies.” Sprouting in that gap is a burgeoning movement toward direct democracy in which voters bypass elected elites and make laws themselves through citizen ballot initiatives, referendums and other tools. “Two trends — the rise of populist authoritarianism in some nations and the rise of local and direct democracy in some areas — are related,” Bruno Kaufmann and Joe Mathews <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…> write. “Frustration is growing with democratic systems at national levels, and yes, some people become more attracted to populism. But some of that frustration is channeled into positive energy — into making local democracy more democratic and direct.” They report: “Cities from Seoul to San Francisco are hungry for new and innovative tools that bring citizens into processes of deliberation that allow the people themselves to make decisions and feel invested in government actions. We’ve seen local governments embrace participatory budgeting, participatory planning, citizens’ juries and a host of experimental digital tools in service of that desired mix of greater public deliberation and more direct public action.” “There seems little doubt that direct democracy will become a more dominant feature of self-government,” the authors argue. “The key challenge ahead will be to design new practices and institutions to ensure that this form of governance is properly mediated so that it enhances the public good, is not captured by organized special interests or does not merely express the prejudices or immediate wash of voters’ emotions.” The debilitated integrity of the democratic process — so damaged lately by the social media influence of polarizing hate speech, fake news and alternative facts — is no less a concern in developing nations than in the core Western countries. “Developing and newer democracies are much more susceptible to the tactics of populists and demagogues — they often do not have strong institutions, free press or the infrastructure required to defend their nascent democracies,” says former U.N. Secretary-General and Nobel laureate Kofi Annan <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…> in an interview. “That is why we need to safeguard the institutions that have been built to prevent blatant twisting of truths that erode trust in our elections and ultimately in democracy itself. My primary focus these days is promoting the legitimacy of democracy by ensuring the integrity of elections, whether from traditional threats, such as too much money in politics, or newer threats arising with the digital age. If citizens do not believe they can change their leaders through the ballot box, they will find other ways, even at the risk of destabilizing their countries.” During a recent tour of Silicon Valley, Annan offered some practical ideas. “When I spoke before an audience at Facebook,” he recounts, “I suggested they should organize a sort of a rapid response team to be called into a situation when it is clear that bots, trolls or fake news are evident. The team could alert electoral commissions or other authorities to offer advice on how to stop the problem before it gets out of control.” The paradox of governance in the age of social networks is that, precisely because there is more participation than ever before entwined with peer-driven media unchecked by factual observation, never has the need been greater for countervailing constraints. That means protecting the integrity of representative government, as Kofi Annan pleads. But it also requires, as Kaufmann and Mathews point out, new impartial practices and institutions that can establish facts, deliberate wise choices, mediate fair trade-offs and forge consensus as direct democracy finds ever greater favor among disillusioned electorates everywhere. Trump is out to demolish NAFTA This week, negotiations among the United States, Mexico and Canada resumed over how to modernize the North America Free Trade Agreement. Former Mexican President Ernesto Zedillo <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…> believes the United States is negotiating in bad faith and pleads for Mexico and Canada not to cave to a bad deal. “It’s clear that what the U.S. government seeks is not to modernize the old NAFTA but rather to get an agreement that would destroy trade and investment among the three North American partners,” he writes. “It perversely aims to get Mexico and Canada’s seal of approval to carry out the demolition of the most successful undertaking ever of mutually beneficial economic cooperation in the Americas.” He concludes: “Unless the U.S. government seriously reconsiders its proposed self-damaging trade policy, its two partners should move forward to protect and lean on another line of defense — the World Trade Organization multilateral system — and leave the U.S. government to assume alone full responsibility for killing NAFTA.” Give Kim Jong Un the benefit of the doubt Hong Seok-Hyun <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, a former special envoy of South Korean President Moon Jae-in to Washington, sees light at the end of the long conflict on the Korean Peninsula. “I harbor cautious optimism for the road ahead because I discern a sincerity in Kim. To test that sincerity, we need to give Kim the benefit of the doubt,” he writes from Seoul. “Kim’s change of heart,” he continues, “likely resulted from his realization that as long as he holds on to nuclear weapons, economic development will be difficult. Just last month, Kim shifted policy from simultaneously pursuing nuclear weapons and economic development to focusing solely on advancing the economy. … Kim may have come to the conclusion that it will not be possible to suppress the desires and grievances of his people if the current ‘maximum pressure’ campaign against North Korea continues.” Nathan Gardels <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Editor in Chief Kathleen Miles <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Executive Editor Dawn Nakagawa <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Vice President of Operations Peter Mellgard <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Features Editor Alex Gardels <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Video Editor Clarissa Pharr <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Associate Editor Rosa O’Hara <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, Social Editor The WorldPost <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…>, a partnership of the Berggruen Institute <http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001EouvDyMwSBxhiXFZVOIFRcCtExR037tI50uZEn4Qexd5…> and The Washington Post, is an award-winning global media platform that aims to be a place where the world meets. Dear all, what free stigmergic coordination is for the commons economy, and just pricing is for ethical market allocations , that is what 'tresholds and allocations' are for the planning component of the new economy, this will literally, 'save the world', and I strongly recommend that really everyone reads this and attempts to understand why this is so important: https://medium.com/@ralphthurm/what-are-thresholds-allocations-and-why-are-… -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

Hodl strong and make sure you take time off for the weekend! Today we explore how token mining may be impacting research in AI, possibilities of Google Duplex passing the Turing Test and a long-form on one of the world’s most wanted hackers. ------------------------------ <http://click.revue.email/wf/click?upn=uoSvyDIrlYZBTfKX9q-2FuqH7BqRA4guXoW1d…>1. Drawing parallels with the gold rush, it is almost as if the picks and shovels can no longer be found by retail customers. Gaming enthusiasts looking for a hardware upgrade often spend upwards of a 50 percent premium on Graphical Processing Units (GPUs) due to a market shortage. Originally designed to render graphics for computer games and other software, GPUs are now used to mine tokens such as Ethereum. This, however, has a serious impact on the pace at which AI progresses. Startups routinely find themselves unable to find the right kind of processing units and thereby find a serious hiccup in their research efforts. For perspective, token miners purchased 3 million GPU boards worth over $776 million last year alone. While companies have begun restricting individuals from buying a large number of units, it doesn’t look like the markets will see a normal, steady supply of GPUs any time soon. Perhaps, we are too fascinated by machines that are now capable of placing phone calls on your behalf. This story questions whether Google Duplex passes the Turing test. It was a measure of a machine’s intelligence that relied upon its ability to mimic human conversations. Thanks to Google Duplex, we now have systems that are capable of entirely replicating actual human conversations. In the demo made by Sundar Pichai (see below), the individual at the receiving end did not realize she was speaking to a bot. In fact, the bot was even able to replicate tones and breaks in the conversation accurately. This has deep ethical implications as digital interactions could often occur with people believing they are interacting with real human beings. Would this mean Google Duplex actually passes the Turing Test? Find more about the limitations of Google’s system and the answer to the question from Lance Ulanoff’s post here. <http://click.revue.email/wf/click?upn=uoSvyDIrlYZBTfKX9q-2FuqA65Mw5f4eddpSb…> <http://click.revue.email/wf/click?upn=uoSvyDIrlYZBTfKX9q-2FuqNHW83P8GbGhUBZ…> Google Duplex: A.I. Financial Crime. Russian hackers. The last story of the week has it all. Written over a year ago, this is a long form that sheds light on the story of Evgeniy Mikhailovich Bogachev. Creator of the Zeus Botnet - a malware designed to assist with bank fraud. The malware was deployed through e-mails that typically tricked individuals into downloading a file. Once downloaded, it allowed third parties to log pins, passwords and even social security numbers. This access was then used to log into the victim’s bank accounts from their own IP address and make bank transfers. Scary isn’t it? Well, it was scary enough to land a $3 million bounty on the individual that created the botnet. Over a period of 3 years, his team of 50-60 individuals caused damages worth well over $100 million using the botnet. Interestingly enough, the person has not been arrested yet. Broken into 9 parts, this story by wired explores the early days of Evgeniy, his bot’s far reach and the nature of his operations. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Auren Hoffman <auren(a)summation.net> Date: Thu, May 10, 2018 at 10:29 PM Subject: five reading links for May I thought you'd enjoy To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> here are five links worth reading/viewing ... 1. Technological Unemployment: Much More Than You Wanted to Know <https://quora.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d19f711bea06312aefdb0a00&i…> by Scott Alexander "Technological unemployment is a hard topic because there are such good arguments on both sides." Alexander spends the time to dive into each part of the issue and ultimate concludes that as technology spreads, "we’ll just get people being pushed into worse and worse jobs, in a way that does not inspire widespread sympathy or collective action." Yes, it is a downer ... but super well-research article. 2. Decades-Old Graph Problem Yields to Amateur Mathematician <https://quora.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d19f711bea06312aefdb0a00&i…> by Evelyn Lamb Too often we ridicule the non-experts. Or we pity them. But many of the world's biggest problems could benefit from people looking at them with fresh eyes. This is true in math, science, business, law, policy, and more. Aubrey de Grey, a biologist (and Five Links reader), created an elegant solution to a math problem that has been stumping mathematicians for decades. 3. Keep Your Identity Small <https://quora.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d19f711bea06312aefdb0a00&i…> by Paul Graham This oldie (from 2009) is one of the best pieces on understanding social science and social interactions. It is also incredibly good advice. 4. Podcast: Auren on Software Engineering Daily <https://quora.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d19f711bea06312aefdb0a00&i…> with Jeff Meyerson Thoughts on data, machine learning, company culture, hiring practices, and more (packed in under 53 minutes). Jeff Meyerson (also a Five Links reader) did a great job with the interview. 5. book: Microtrends Squared <https://quora.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d19f711bea06312aefdb0a00&i…> by Mark Penn I loved the original Microtrends book (from 2007) and sequel is just as good. Mark Penn is the former pollster to Bill and Hilary Clinton, fmr CEO at Burson-Marsteller, and fmr exec at Microsoft (and Five Links reader). Microtrends Squared is 50 easy-to-consume micro trends from Love and Relationships, Health and Diet, Technology, Lifestyle, Politics, and Work and Business. 6. bonus for fun: Packets are a conspiracy of dentists and dry cleaners — I despise them <https://quora.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3d19f711bea06312aefdb0a00&i…> by Auren Hoffman A humorous piece to lighten your Spring. *Got forwarded this from a friend (or enemy)? Here are some of the articles our experts have recommended this week: Piqer Helen Morgan focuses on how inexpensive greenhouses are helping farmers in India adapt to climate change <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…>: The social entrepreneurs behind the idea were trying to address the issue of growing numbers of farmer suicides, linked to problems with low crop yields due to drought. We read so much about the global opioid crisis, but rarely about solutions. Piqer Danielle Batist points to Portugal’s drug decriminalization program <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…>, which has successfully reduced opioid use, as well as drug abuse of all kinds. Michaela Haas highlighted an article about carbon farming <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…>, and more specifically how plants and agriculture can play a major role in significantly reducing C02 released into the atmosphere. Jodie Jackson found an article about a young entrepreneur who’s crowdfunded and built gigantic device to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…>(an island of plastic roughly the size of France floating in the Pacific Ocean). The device, called The Ocean Cleanup, will set sail this summer. Finally, we have an article from the Good News Network <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…>recommended by Geri Weis-Corbley about a formerly homeless San Francisco writer who is trying to address growing inequality by teaching people from the poorest neighborhoods how to code <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…>—some of whom have since landed six-figure jobs. Most people will have heard of Cape Town's count down to "day zero"—the day that the city runs out of water. Leading up to this cataclysmic day, most media pundits (and even the local government) predicted utter chaos. The fact that water was running out in a city known for a history of extreme racial tension only made predictions more dire. However, when reporter Eve Fairbanks traveled to Cape Town to see how residents were managing the impending apocalypse, what she found was quite the contrary: People were coming together, across economic and even racial lines, to conserve water and try to find some sort of solution: Voluntary water usage plummeted, and it soon became a badge of honor to "show a visitor day-old urine ripening in your toilet." She describes residents of Cape Town's behavior as a "beautiful social experiment." It could be that human beings are just waiting for something that gives them a challenge, a chance to rise above their politics-exhausted cynicisms and prove they can be good neighbors, stand for more than just money and success, and find ingenious tricks, together, to outwit their new tormentors. It could be that certain kinds of disasters—particularly the natural, which feel more neutral and acceptable than politically driven ones—may wedge open spaces for change in other areas in which we feel stuck. This excellent piece about how Capetonians came together—and what their cooperation achieved—is definitely worth a read. <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: A Surprising Unintended Consequence Of Cape Town's Drought: Unity And Cooperation] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Source: Eve Fairbanks highline.huffingtonpost.com <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> The Unlikely Upside of Cape Town's Drought <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Read article <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: Piqd email border] [image: Hannes Sjob] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> piqer: <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Hannes Sjob <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> 7.5 <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Japanese Biohackers Make "Clean Meat" In A Lab <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Our meat consumption isn’t sustainable. But lab made meat has the potential to fundamentally transform the human food chain. This will have a planetary-wide impact, providing an eco-friendly and safe source of animal protein. And innovation is not just happening in universities and corporate research facilities: at-home biohackers are already making it happen. “His English is a little broken, but his instructions are so clear I pause to wonder, 'Well, why aren’t I growing a lab meat in my kitchen?'” The author is referring a conversation with Yuki Hanyu on the growing ‘clean meat’ community. Japan-based Hanyu, who holds a PhD in chemistry, is more than a mere enthusiast on the subject. With the Shojinmeat Project, he connects roughly 30 DIY citizen scientists across Japan — often schoolkids — who all grow artificial meat in their own homes. Apart from offering each other advice and exchanging experience, the group frequently post articles as well as pictures of their work, sharing both their insights and their enthusiasm with others. In the article, Hanyu describes the delicate process of making meat from cells in a fertilized egg — involving dry ice, centrifuge and an incubator in true Do It Yourself style. The Shojinmeat Project isn’t the only thing Hanyu is up to — in 2015 he funded the start-up company Integriculture, with the hopes of creating “a general purpose large-scale cell culture system”. With Integriculture Hanyu looks beyond meat, departing from similar companies by thinking in more general terms. Among other things, the company plans on using its cell-growing technology to create customized products for cosmetics and supplement companies. Further out, they want to create a clean-meat infrastructure that they could license out to other companies, reaching a broader market. “Until lab meat becomes more mainstream, however, Shojinmeat will be growing its own culture of DIY enthusiasts who create their own meat at home. Will you be among them?” <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: Japanese Biohackers Make "Clean Meat" In A Lab] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Source: Hannes Sjoblad thespoon.tech <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> 04/16/2018 Shojinmeat is Growing a DIY Clean Meat Community <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Read article <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: Piqd email border] [image: Mark Koyama] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> piqer: <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Mark Koyama <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> 7.5 <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Lecture: Immigration And Freedom <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> In the wake of the ongoing concern with immigration in the US and the Windrush scandal <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> in the UK, it is worth revisiting this lecture by LSE philosopher Chandran Kukathas. The lecture was given in 2017 at George Mason University, but it could not be more topical. Kukathas's theme is immigration and freedom. But while we often think of this in terms of a migrant's freedom to move, Kukathas points to the impact immigration control has on the prospective host country. Borders, Kukathas notes, are a political construct. The extent to which borders are enforced is always a matter of degree. Borders are not only about who can enter the country. They also control what they do when they are in that country, i.e. whether they can work, purchase property, or settle. Immigration control, therefore, does not stop at the border. For instance, enforcing immigration law requires policing non-immigrants who might wish to hire undocumented immigrants. And this policing requires the recreation of new and powerful bureaucracies. Kukathas's lecture points to the costs of attempting to rigorously enforce immigration law. To control immigration is to control people — and not just outsiders — but also citizens who might be required to provide identification or made liable for checking the status of those they hire. Thus, living in a society that tightly controls immigration means living in a society that’s very heavily controlled with respect to ourselves. It explains horizontal and vertical integration, the two ways that monopolies can form and take over a market segment, usually to the detriment of consumers in the long run. Given the current potential merger between AT&T and Time Warner, which a judge is set to rule on in June, these economic basics are important for everyone to get a grip on. While in this case the tech and communications giants promise that joining their corporations would make wireless networks faster and more reliable, the merger would also consolidate America’s wireless companies to just three, which is almost certain to bump prices for access to information and communication. Even Donald Trump suggested this wasn’t a good idea. “The question is whether one huge company plus another huge company, would turn into one enormous telecom and media company controlling so much content and the way it’s delivered to you that it could freeze out other producers and distributors who want to make you laugh, cry, and binge watch.” <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: Video On Media Monopolies: Should AT&T And Time Warner Merge?] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Source: Cecilia Kang nytimes.com <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> 05/01/2018 Would AT&T's Time Warner Deal Help or Hurt Consumers? Of the 219 nominees, only 20 were from Africa and none were selected. There are several factors behind this, including the fact that nominators themselves are based in localities that do not give them knowledge of the existence of African photographers. That is not a good excuse, though, as powerful organizations such as the World Press Photo (WPP) should be doing more to identify photographers in African countries given they do exist and stand most to benefit from networking and training opportunities. By choosing who gets to be recognised, selected for training by respected photographers and photo editors, and networked into powerful media houses, such organisations have the power to direct who pictures and narrates our world. What is most troubling about overlooking African photographers is that instead such initiatives "reward, once again, Europeans who fly into Africa to photograph locations with which they are not familiar, often through the same, unquestioned and stereotypical lens." As an African storyteller, I know only too well of the lens through which mainstream media still sees my continent. Born in Kenya and now living in Senegal, I rarely see images in global media that represent the African experience in its full diversity. It's easy to find pictures of slums, garbage heaps, conflict, but rarely of positive images in western media. I turn to Instagram for that. By leaving out photographers from African countries, and continuing to skew the selection process towards photographers who are from Europe and North America, the way the world pictures and imagines Africa and Africans will remain as they have historically been framed by the geopolitical west — as a location of a special brand of savagery and darkness to which those in the west have no parallel experiences or equivalent. <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: > Read this article on piqd.com] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: The Western Gaze In African Photography] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Source: M Neelika Jayawardane aljazeera.com <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> 04/26/2018 Who gets to picture and narrate Africa? <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> Read article <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> [image: Piqd email border] <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> piqd GmbH | Widenmayerstr. 38 | 80538 Munich Tel.: +49 (0) 8152 99 86 564 | Fax:+49 (0) 8152 9986571 | Email: contact(a)piqd.com Managing director: Marcus von Jordan | Seat and court of jurisdiction: Munich HRB 217337 Tax number: 143/134/81256 | VAT numer: DE 300221320 Imprint <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> | Privacy <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> This email was sent to michelsub2004(a)gmail.com *why did I get this?* <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/about?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&id=ff26…> unsubscribe from this list <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/unsubscribe?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&i…> update subscription preferences <https://piqd.us11.list-manage.com/profile?u=1c016007e32cb1600e4f02736&id=ff…> piqd GmbH · Widenmayerstr. 38 · Munich 80538 · Germany -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

a request: I have to do this for my participation, on behalf of the P2P Foundation, in the Transition Design Symposium which take place at the end of June in Totnes, bringing together various movements to seek common ground and joint priorities. All suggestions are welcome: Influential Streams of Thought and Resources We’re asking each panelist to contribute to a list of resources on societal transitions and system-level change. These will be compiled in a separate section of the Symposium proceedings. 1) What are the 3 most influential books, papers, videos/films you have encountered in the past 5 years?
