Fwd: Blade Runner-style Robot Detection Needed

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <dailydigest(a)piqd.com> Date: Tue, Aug 22, 2017 at 7:00 AM Subject: Blade Runner-style Robot Detection Needed To: Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> <https://www.piqd.com/> News from your channels Technology and society <https://www.piqd.com/technology-politics> <https://www.piqd.com/users/magda.skrzypek> piqer: Magda Skrzypek 5 <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/blade-runner-style-robot-…> Blade Runner-style Robot Detection Needed <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/blade-runner-style-robot-…> If you have ever tried to create an online account, you have probably encountered a CAPTCHA prompt asking you to decipher a hard-to-read text, to puzzle over small images or to click on a checkbox. Standing for *"Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apar*t," the test aims to distinguish real people from robots wanting to spam and abuse the website. As annoying as it may be, there are valid reasons for this security feature. In fact, according to Tim Wu, a professor at Columbia Law School, we should step up our game as far as robot detection is concerned. In a short but informative opinion piece, the author of *"The Attention Merchants: The Epic Struggle to Get Inside Our Heads*" describes how “*robots are getting better, every day, at impersonating humans*,” from carrying out online ticket-buying and writing automated product reviews, to spreading propaganda and swaying votes. As the robots affect more and more areas of life, Wu calls for the introduction of “Blade Runner” law – a measure that would make it illegal for a robot to pose as a human. “Today’s impersonation-bots are different from the robots imagined in science fiction: They aren’t sentient, don’t carry weapons and don’t have physical bodies. Instead, fake humans just have whatever is necessary to make them seem human enough to 'pass',” writes Wu. However absurd “Blade Runner” law may appear at first sight, Wu brings up a couple of important points to consider. First, he accurately calls out industry’s lack of incentive (and so far action for that matter) to tackle the issue, thus dismissing the possibility of relying solely on self-regulation. Second, he might be right that the mixed approach employing both technological and legal tools would be necessary to successfully deter impersonation bots. But most importantly, Wu calls a spade a spade and acknowledges the relevance and severity of the issue – bots posing as humans seriously threaten our democracy. <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Blade%20Runner-style%20Robot%20Detect…> <https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.piqd.com%2Ft…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/blade-runner-style-robot-…> <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/blade-runner-style-robot-…> Source: Tim Wu | nytimes.com on 07/20/2017 | Image: Brandon Blommaert | Language: EN Opinion | Please Prove You're Not a Robot Read article <https://www.piqd.com/tracking/technology-politics/blade-runner-style-robot-…> Your newsletter Not enough information in your newsletter? This should help us to start organizing shared orders between different nodes, producers and collectives involved in FairCoop. And furthermore, it could be a useful tool for many social movements; some existing consumer networks are organizing together to use this tool, as part of the Red de Compras Colectivas, (Network of Collective Purchases). To explain briefly how it works, it is very similar to a crowd-funding campaign: – Any producer, local node, or group of consumers can open a specific product called collective purchases. They define characteristics like the price of a product, the minimum amount that a customer should pay, the total amount that should be paid, and a limited time of the offer, if applicable. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Thu, Aug 17, 2017 at 3:43 PM Subject: [bgcon] "Violence from the Future" To: digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de Hi, the G20 in Hamburg is now one and half month ago now. Let us take some time to reflect what actually happened, after all this was a very special and very strange 'event' that disclosed how very far one of the most respected democracies around the world is willing to go when it comes protect the ruling class and its interests. A special investigation by the authorities is starting these days, but it is likely that the very logics of the war-like state of emergency that has been created in Hamburg's blue zone during the G20 will not be part of its agenda. So it will be up to us to explore these logics and to try to spread the discussion about it. My article published in BG and in English translation in openDemocracy makes a start. Please have a look here: "Violence from the Future": https://opendemocracy.net/can-europe-make-it/krystian- woznicki/violence-from-future-on-logics-of-g20-state-of-emergency "Gewalt aus der Zukunft": http://berlinergazette.de/g-20-gewalt-aus-der-zukunft/ It is also likely that the official G20-investigation will not account for the growing number of crowd-sourced documents disclosing attacks on demonstrators and on journalists. For both of these collections please have a look here and please contribute or spread the word about it, since the process is still going on: attacks on demonstrators https://g20-doku.org/category/polizeigewalt/ attacks on journalists https://g20-doku.org/category/pressefreiheit/ If you have any comments or suggestions, please let us know. Such activities have become ubiquitous: legal services, policing, and prisons; cybercrime and the army of experts defending organizations against it; financial regulators trying to stop mis-selling and the growing ranks of compliance officers employed in response; the huge resources devoted to US election campaigns; real-estate services that facilitate the exchange of already-existing assets; and much financial trading. Much design, branding, and advertising activity is also essentially zero-sum. It is certainly good that new fashions can continually compete for our attention; choice and human creativity are valuable per se. But we have no reason to believe that 2050’s designs and brands will make us any happier than those of 2017. Such zero-sum activities have always been significant.
