dear George, yes, I agree with you, we have to operate at both these levels, and I'm guessing the grassroots level dialogues are already happening, but changing the thinking of people who have been working with one particular paradigm all their lives is much more difficult, if not almost impossible <g>, so I would suggest working through younger staffers, working with think thanks, organizing workshops with people in political movements that are open to commons ideas ... personally, I am also very happy with the progress of the Assemblies of the Commons in France, though most are not focusing on this political work, but they are in dialogue with municipal officials for their projects; and initiatives like the Commons Transition Coalition in Melbourne. Fwd: Eh.net Book Review: The Great Transition: Climate, Disease and Society in the Late-Medieval World
by Michel Bauwens 08 Feb '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: EH.net <newsletter(a)eh.net> Date: 8 February 2017 at 05:31 Subject: Eh.net Book Review: The Great Transition: Climate, Disease and Society in the Late-Medieval World To: rasigan(a)ieri.org.za Published by EH.Net (February 2017) Bruce Campbell, *The Great Transition: Climate, Disease and Society in the Late-Medieval World*. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2016. xxiv + 463 pp. $35 (paperback), ISBN: 978-0-521-14443-8. Reviewed for EH.Net by Eric Jones, La Trobe University. The cathedral that stands unfinished in Siena marks how abruptly the expansion of the High Middle Ages was brought to a halt, although maybe the failure to complete it during the recovery that began in the fifteenth century is more surprising. Until the fourteenth century the expansion had been remarkable, with population doubling or trebling since the late eleventh century, cities multiplying, international trade routes linking up, and cultural output soaring, with a thirteen-fold increase in the annual output of manuscripts for example. The climate was benign and the burden of disease modest. What could go wrong? Bruce Campbell’s 400 tightly-packed pages tell us about what might be termed the Great Disruption. He is chiefly interested in climatic and biological forces, and the cascade of political, economic and social woes that arose in the “Perfect Storm” when they all seemed to go wrong at once. Much of Eurasia was afflicted by the same malign, “quasi-autonomous,” turn of events. The book concentrates heavily on England, which is better documented than other countries, but stretches across Europe to the Middle East and Asia as far as China. It takes in the irruption of the Mongols and the cramping of options for the Vikings of the North Atlantic; indeed it takes in everywhere and every phenomenon. Ingenious proxies are introduced. The text is backed up by an extraordinary array of attractively drawn graphs and bar diagrams, although I have qualms about the unstated implication that all sources are equally reliable. The reader is usually obliged to take the underlying numbers on trust. Occasionally models are cited incautiously and objections to them scouted, for instance where falling interest rates are assumed to have determined capital investment in peasant farming. Similarly, the costs and benefits of political fragmentation are dealt with a little ambiguously. Medieval economic history is nevertheless more valuably expounded in the long central stretches of this volume than anywhere else. In principle it is standard stuff, but here it is impressively digested, made sharper and brought right up to date by its use of advanced scientific findings about influences on the climate and human and animal health. Over fifty years ago the Hampshire County Archivist told me that she had some sleepless nights after cutting her finger on a parchment of the Plague Year. Well she might. Yet it is only this minute, so to speak, that DNA from the dental pulp of exhumed skeletons has confirmed what the disease organism really was. The Perfect Storm of climate and disease was a gigantic shock but it was still an asymmetric one. In the long term not quite everything did go wrong. The Black Death, Campbell states, worked to England’s advantage by relieving the burden of poverty and facilitating structural reform. This is a thesis of growth by disaster, a sort of neutron bomb that counteracted the morcellement produced by intense demand for land: a considerable proportion of capital-in-land was not exactly untouched but was at least reusable. Extra-somatic sources of technical knowledge also survived. The achievements of description and analysis in this hefty volume are incontestable and we should move on to consider its interesting method or rather scope. There are lessons here for economic historians to ponder. To my mind, Campbell overstates his case by presenting the book as the first to integrate physical and biological processes into historical narrative and its originality as a study of so much of the globe. He rather sweeps most predecessors aside. What is new is the extent to which his work rests on an upsurge of research by his contemporaries, something he does admit, just as he acknowledges the impetus from research on global warming. The Great Transition marks the shift into a world of ample funding (not merely in the United States but now in Europe too), of the compiling of vast new sources of data, of enormous international chains of scholars, and of the arrival in economic history, natural science-like, of publications with very long lists of contributors. Economic historians will henceforth be obliged to treat as normal the use of scientific articles, scientific data and wholly unfamiliar proxies. Tree-ring counts are a recognizable tool but here we run out to something as indirect as a nine-fold increase in the purchase of sealing wax by the English Chancery in just forty years of the thirteenth century. And what of a “precipitation index based on the band widths of a speleothem from Cnoc nan Uamh Cave, A.D. 900-1500” or the citation of articles like one entitled, ‘Antarctic Last Millennium 10BE Stack and Solar Irradiance Reconstruction”? How will colleagues in general history or economics react to innumerable unfamiliar terms such as these? Campbell was educated as a geographer and it shows — in the best possible sense, in that he is totally aware of the physical, climatic and biological worlds and open-minded enough to scour them for ideas and evidence. But, as he says, he learned the hard way how resistant historians can be to venturing off what they believe to be piste. I was myself admonished by a famous cultural historian not to use the simile of tectonic plates grinding “because historians will not understand what you mean.” The scholarly world may be advancing beyond such obtuseness but the acceptance in general narratives of integrated natural science and history will still come slowly. Nor are economists likely to greet with glee what might be called “deep environmental history.” There is no gainsaying the fact that many prefer building *a priori* models to slow-motion wrestling with ground evidence from the natural world. Both Marxist and neo-classical interpretations of the past are accordingly dismissed in this book but without fully stating the objections. Campbell simply replaces them with a bold set of very complicated social, political and ecological interactions. Nevertheless he swallows whole the fashionable neoclassical-style assertions that labor-saving inventions and innovations were induced by low interest rates and dear labor. Because something was logical does not mean it actually happened for that reason. Barely a word here about the human and cultural circumstances involved in the response, though there is something about the providential emergence of institutions to capture the rents from expanding commerce during the High Middle Ages. Yet these issues can be taken forward by others and they are, in the vulgar phrase, “pimples on a side of beef” compared with the stupendous effort in charting the course of medieval economic history that this book represents. Reflections on Trump, and the role of the commons as an alternative
by Michel Bauwens 08 Feb '17

08 Feb '17

personal reflections on the meaning of Trump, in the form of axioms. Bear in mind this is a very quick first write-up which needs to be improved. Updates eventually via https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Theses_on_Trump Theses[edit <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/index.php?title=Theses_on_Trump&action=edit&…> ] 1. The victory and support for Trump reflects the crisis of neoliberal globalization and the underlying dynamics of capitalism, i.e. both the environmental externalities such as peak resources (not contrary to current oil glut, but a paradoxical part of it, see Bio-Physical Triggers of Political Violence <https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Bio-Physical_Triggers_of_Political_Violence>), and climate change; and the social externalities, essentially the impoverishment of the western working and middle classes. 2. Hence a struggle between the pro-neoliberal forces who want to maintain the benefits of Empire at the cost of both the internal population and the nationally bound industries, and those of the forces that backed Trump, and accept that they can no longer dominate Empire . Hence the support for Trump from the more nationally oriented business leaders, the sectors that fear climate change costs and regulations (the energy sector). Hence the retreat from imperial policing and responsibilities. The idea is to retreat back to the nation-state, only accept trade which does not endanger national capital, and to repatriate the trillions that are stashed abroad through the 'imperial' multinationals. This explains the opposition to Trump from the neoliberal elite. 3. The class compromise of neoliberalism, to accept the cultural aspects of the 1968 uprising, and thus the acceptance of cultural and gender rights with the postmodern, post-labor left that supported it, is no longer workable. Hence the Trump forces promise an alignment with the white working class (but also others who share certain laborist or productivist values), at the cost of Otherization. It is important to understand that just as the labor left institutions got coopted in the New Deal / Welfare state model, so did also the pro-rights left represented by identity politics, or at least large parts of it (see Boltanski book). Hence the alignment between pro-neoliberal politics and the cultural left, represented by the Clinton-Obama coalitions. 4. Since the cultural left is focused on cultural rights, they are understandably opposed to the Otherization and overt racism/genderism of the Trump coalition, and feel largely obliged to support to some degree the neoliberal regime which granted the cultural rights and reforms, but given the undermining of the neoliberal compromise, this seems like a mistake. 5. More realistically, the Sanders forces represent those sectors of the left focused on recreating a synergy between progressive labor and the cultural left, intent on creating a new coalition. Hence the moderate language used by Sanders so as to maintain the links with the parts of labor who voted Trump. However, this also means maintaining a broad orientation towards restoring the New Deal principles , support for Keynesian politics, but also crucially, the same orientation towards re-industrialization and the restoration of the nation-state. 6. Both coalitions therefore have their contradictions. For example, Trump needs the support of both labor and their unions, but also of the no-tax Republicans, meaning he has to cut the budget at the same time as he needs trillions for infrastructural investment. He needs to retreat from Empire, but needs to pacify the defense establishment. He needs Big Oil, but at the cost of environmental disruption. 7. The Obama and Sanders coalitions have their own contradictions, being wedded to a dismantling globalization and a impossible to really restore nation-state reality. 8. The p2p/commons approach has a crucial role to play in rending the Sanders coalition more realistic, by offering new strategies for re-industrialization which are not based on going back to the old models, but on going forward towards a cosmo-local model of production, which offers solutions not just for the US workers, but for the populations of the world, and through its stress on mutualization and the commons, has solutions for the ecological and climate crisis. This requires that commoners make their own turn towards focusing not on knowledge workers only, but to all workers and the rest of the population, by offering perspectives for sustainable livelihoods. While at the same time, construction trans-national institutions. 9. However, the big issue for the commons movenent and emergence is the immaturity of a lot of these potential solutions. Thus, the commons needs as much to align with the progressive nation-state restorers, as the other way around, as such huge transitions are impossible to carry out in good conditions without the support of state institutions (what we call the Partner State approach). Hence, one of the strategic priorities is a dialogue between the labor left (a la Sanders and Corbyn), the cultural rights movements, and the emerging commons movement. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

He is working on a book with his brothers, Neil Gershenfeld and Alan Gershenfeld, that connects the science of digital fabrication with the social science of these innovations. This is what has prompted the survey. Joel volunteered with his son for three years in the very first fab lab in Boston's South End in the early 2000s. He also led a team conducting a survey of U.S. fab labs in 2009 and helped to launch the Champaign-Urbana Community Fab Lab. In addition to sharing your views, you are welcome to forward this survey to others who you know to be involved in digital fabrication. If you receive more than one invitation to take the survey, please only do so once. Note that the survey is in English. If this is not your primary language, but you can read this note and would like a version in another language, please contact joelcg(a)brandeis.edu with this request. We will be sending reminders on this survey, but please complete it as soon as you can. Thank you for your consideration and participation. Help us help the community! Fwd: Food Commons in Europe: new Video + Text + Supplementary Links
by Michel Bauwens 07 Feb '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jose Luis Vivero <joseluisvivero(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Feb 7, 2017 at 11:03 PM Subject: Food Commons in Europe: new Video + Text + Supplementary Links To: Jose Luis Vivero <joseluisvivero(a)gmail.com> Dear friends and colleagues, It is my pleasure to share with you a media package (video + short narrative + supplementary academic and non-academic links) that was prepared for the recent European Commons Assembly ( http://europeancommonsassembly.eu/ ) that took place in Brussels. Please, find the link below: https://blog.p2pfoundation.net/food-commons-europe/2017/02/01 Food is treated as a mere commodity in European policies, legal frameworks and normative views. Actually, food is not even considered as a human right in EU charters, constitutions and legal frameworks <http://gh.bmj.com/content/1/1/e000040>, nor a public good subject to public policies and universal access (such as health, education or water) and, least to say, a commons, although many commons and community-owned resources are producing food for Europeans <https://www.cbd.int/protected/ts64-country-case-studies/>. In this short video, I explore the potential of treating food as a commons to build a more sustainable and fairer food system for the humans and the environment. The accompanying text includes *15 measures to support the food commons in Europe*, measures that could be considered for the next reform of the Common Agricultural Policy. As a suggestion, this policy could be re-named as the Commons Food Policy to be more coherent with the new valuation of food. The complete Policy Proposal "The Food Commons in Europe" can be accessed here: http://wiki.commonstransition.org/wiki/ECA:_The_food_commons _in_Europe:_Relevance,_challenges_and_proposals_to_support_them I would appreciate if you could distribute these text and video to those contacts of yours that may consider it relevant. Needless to say, any comment or suggestion will be more than welcomed.
