Fwd: Why the Left's religiophobia is so self-destructive
by Michel Bauwens 16 Feb '17

16 Feb '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tikkun <miriam(a)tikkun.org> Date: Thu, Feb 16, 2017 at 7:47 AM Subject: Why the Left's religiophobia is so self-destructive To: Michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Editor's Note: The research we at Tikkun and our parent body the Institute for Labor and Mental Health have done over the past decades continues to confirm our findings that one of the major reasons many Americans accept the Right's view that people in the liberal and progressive camps "dont understand you and are elitists who have contempt for you" is that many Americans have encountered an extreme fear and disdain for anything spiritual or religious in the culture of the liberal and progressive worlds. This latest report from the Pew Research Center (below) shows that a very large percentage of Americans have very positive feelings about people in a wide variety of religious communities. The Left says it wants a democratic transformation of American society, but the majority of Americans feel positive about religion and are hence much less open to liberals and progressvies than they would be if the Left had a much more open and embracing attitude toward religion, not just the of the famous progressive African American reliigous people like Martin Luther King, Jr and Rev. William Barber (of North Carolina's Moral Monday campaign) but even of religious practitioners more generally instead of assuming (falsely) that everyone into religion or spirituality is either racist, sexist, homophobic, or at least less intellectually and emotionally developed and sophisticated than those who reject religion or at least don't mention it publicly except to critique the religious extremists. Religiophobia is one of the key distortions of the Left that must be challenged, even while continuing to critique those variants of religion along with those variants of politics that are racist, sexist, homophobia, xenophobic, Islamophobic, or antiSemitic. But we at Tikkun encounter this religiophobia every day by people telling us, "I like your analysis, but I'd never join any movement that has the word 'spiritual' in it--because that is likely a slippery slope to religion, and I hate or fear religion." Of course, some of those who hold that view have grown up in oppressive or bigoted religious communities and feel that they know what they are talking about because of that experience. But they fail to understand that there are many religious people and religious communities that do not share these kinds of distrotions. Religio-phobia is as much a prejudice of any other belief that demeans everyone in a particular group for the behavior of some in that group. Honestly, we are not making this up--it happens to us all the time. This is one of the issues that we address in our Spiritual Activism Training: Beyond Resistance - Strategies in the Age of Trump which you can learn about by clicking here <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=%2B8uUoaDdeVf%2BwhpSA0GaF0JAfQ…> or by going to: https://org.salsalabs.com/o/525/p/salsa/event/common/ public/?event_KEY=98701 <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=acpyKimwL9Cc%2FxwynC5BykJAfQ8A…> Meanwhile, read the Pew report on how people in the US are becoming ever more favorable to religions. The Pew Research Center Report: *Americans Express Increasingly Warm Feelings Toward Religious Groups* *Jews, Catholics continue to receive warmest ratings, atheists and Muslims move from cool to neutral* WASHINGTON, D.C. (Feb. 15, 2017) – On the heels of a contentious election year in which partisan politics increasingly divided Americans, a new Pew Research Center survey <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=10LwfsYGAVlo1lieg3Pot0JAfQ8APx…> finds that when it comes to religion, Americans generally express more positive feelings toward various religious groups today than they did just a few years ago. Asked to rate a variety of groups on a “feeling thermometer” ranging from 0 to 100, U.S. adults give nearly all groups warmer ratings than they did in a June 2014 Pew Research Center survey. While Americans still feel coolest toward Muslims and atheists, mean ratings for these two groups increased from a somewhat chilly 40 and 41 degrees, respectively, to more neutral ratings of 48 and 50. Jews and Catholics continue to be among the groups that receive the warmest ratings – even warmer than in 2014. Evangelical Christians, rated relatively warmly at 61 degrees, are the only group for which the mean rating did not change since the question was last asked in 2014. Americans’ feelings toward Mormons and Hindus have shifted from relatively neutral places on the thermometer to somewhat warmer ratings of 54 and 58, respectively. Ratings of Buddhists rose from 53 to 60. And mainline Protestants, whom respondents were not asked to rate in 2014, receive a warm rating of 65 in the new survey. The increase in mean ratings is broad based. Warmer feelings are expressed by people in all the major religious groups analyzed, as well as by both Democrats and Republicans, men and women, and younger and older adults. However, the mean ratings given to particular religious groups still vary widely depending on who is being asked. For example, young adults – those ages 18 to 29 – express warmer feelings toward Muslims than older Americans do. Moreover, young adults rate all of the groups in the study within a relatively tight range, from 54 degrees for Mormons to 66 for Buddhists. By contrast, older Americans (ages 65 and older) rate some religious groups, such as mainline Protestants (75) and Jews (74), very warmly, and others, such as Muslims and atheists (44 degrees each), much more coolly. These are among the main findings of a new Pew Research Center survey of 4,248 adults conducted Jan. 9 to 23, 2017, on Pew Research Center’s nationally representative American Trends Panel. The survey also finds wide variation in the ratings that U.S. religious groups give one another. While for the most part Jews and Christians tend to rate each other warmly, atheists and evangelicals continue to view each other in a negative light. The findings are for immediate release and can be found at http://www.pewforum.org/2017/02/15/americans-express-i ncreasingly-warm-feelings-toward-religious-groups <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=n3FBD10C49Qe6%2Bsx%2Be%2FEM0JA…> For more information, or to arrange an interview with Senior Researcher Jessica Martinez <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=IWy50VtNA0ruTCgr1%2BDQzFjEcxCS…>, please contact Anna Schiller at 202.419.4372 <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=c0dzC8ERIZEygpgz%2B8NaYFjEcxCS…> or aschiller(a)pewresearch.org <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=yBuACvCBAi5acpfx3okVeUJAfQ8APx…> *Pew Research Center <http://org.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=FXMlwwObV8MkyQr%2FUN8W0kJAfQ8A…> is a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping America and the world. Fwd: Invitation: Shadow Cabinet @ Cuchifritos Gallery

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jodi Waynberg <jodi(a)artistsallianceinc.org> Date: Sat, Feb 11, 2017 at 1:30 AM Subject: Invitation: Shadow Cabinet @ Cuchifritos Gallery To: michel(a)p2pfoundation.net Dear Michel, I hope all is well! I am excited to share information about “Shadow Cabinet:” A Loyal Opposition Response, our current exhibition on view at Cuchifritos Gallery + Project Space (LES, New York). I received your contact information from Filippo Lorenzin, who thought this project might be of interest to you. Since the election of President Donald Trump in November 2016, we have seen the people of the United States come together to voice concerns, fears, and uncertainties. Each individual in the U.S. has been affected by the change in administration to some extent. Countless questions have been raised across the world, yet remain unanswered. In “Shadow Cabinet*,”* a group of artists, scientists, and activists have come together in response: to shadow the Trump Administration in an administration of their own, providing the public with solutions in real time. “Shadow Cabinet” offers a unique perspective, bringing alternative options into the discussion of America’s future. Below/attached is information about and images of “Shadow Cabinet*.” *If you’re not able or available to see this show in person, the contributors’ initial statements and ongoing responses are available on the project website. (www.shadowcabinet.info) On November 22, 2016, amidst considerable uncertainty about the direction of the United States in the next four years, a proposal erupted: *to launch a “Shadow Cabinet” to run concurrently with the Donald Trump Administration*; not intended to protest but, rather to propose alternative policies in each of the Executive-branch Departments. As the current administration intensifies its policies and politics that have systematically degraded our environmental and ethical beliefs, it has begun to systematically erode the possibility for equal well-being across the racial, spiritual, class and sexual divides that our “Shadow Cabinet” proposes to be attainable. The “Shadow Cabinet” members come from decades of work dedicated to reforming systems of war, land use, labor policy and finance, including the observation of hotspots with civil-satellite data, watershed management, and the development of an ecology-based tax system to replace the current income-based system. The “Shadow Cabinet” will serve as a voice in contrast to, but acknowledging the existence and intentions of the Trump Administration. We intend to put on record the views of members of the most-forward thinking sector; the daring pioneers, of the U.S. For some, this sector is called the "avant-garde." They produce the images and technologies of the new economy. They could well lead the way. In the book "Weimar Culture," a Columbia University historian concludes that the avant-garde of post-WW I Germany almost deliberately chose to not respond to that country's economic and political crises. They could have. They should have. They did not. So, we had a frustrated artist lead the country, and all of Europe, into the world's biggest war. Can the avant-garde in the U.S. come to the fore, take responsibility for its new ideas, and lead the way to a viable, plausible and survivable future? A “Shadow Cabinet” addresses these questions and offers an administration organized to solve them. Up to four years may be required. For more information, please feel free to visit the website dedicated to the project. If you have any questions, or are planning to visit the gallery, please do let me know! Thank you so much for your time. -- Jodi Waynberg Director *Artists Alliance Inc. <http://artistsallianceinc.org/>* 107 Suffolk St. Room 411 New York, NY 10002 O: 212.420.9202 *Cuchifritos Gallery & Project Space <http://artistsallianceinc.org/cuchifritos-gallery-2/cuchifritos>* 120 Essex Street (located in Essex Market) New York, NY 10002 E gallery(a)artistsallianceinc.org <http://artistsallianceinc.org/cuchifritos-gallery-2/on-view> *Currently On View <http://artistsallianceinc.org/cuchifritos-gallery-2/on-view>* *Shadow Cabinet: A Loyal Opposition Response* Through March 5, 2017 -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Re: [P2P-F] Reflections on Trump, and the role of the commons as an alternative

Dear Kevin, Thank you so much for this perspective, I wholly agree and I want to commend you especially for your efforts in knowing the dynamics of the opposite camp, as I would not have the time to do this. I urge you to keep on working on this track, and to become a real expert in this, god knows we need people like you willing to do this. We would also welcome your perspectives and writings on the p2p and CT blogs, and you will have seen george por's proposal for a political and policy oriented commons newsletter, I want to make a little point of localism, and Occupy; obviously, at least for me, it doesn't work to critique them from the outside as many post-Marxists do, and seeing them as the enemy either. These are both great and massive social mobilisations, moving into a necessary but not sufficient direction. Localized initiatives are not bad, just insufficient, swarm based mobilizations are not bad, just insufficient. At the same time, for those who have a more integrative understanding and understand 'power' and 'institutions' cannot be ignored, it's cleary not enough, and it is important to also point that out. One point here is that recently at the P2P Foundation I have been pointing at the need for our language to reflect this. So I have been introducing, in the context of our work on the cosmo-local DGML based forms of physical production, to stress, not localism, but the 'subsidiarity of material production' instead. I.e. we need a lot more local production, but always also in a trans-national framework. If ever you had some energy to maintain a newsletter of the kind george and I are wishing for, that would cover political commons convergences like the ECA, the assembly of the commons that are emerging, the policy work being done in so many urban settings, I would put a lot of my energy of assembling such info in a way that would be accessible to the editor of such a newsletter, we really need this, but at p2p-f, we are overwhelmed with our existing to do lists, Michel Michel <<<From: Holy Mountain <kev.flanagan(a)gmail.com> To: P2P Foundation mailing list <p2p-foundation(a)lists.ourproject.org> Cc: "staccotroncoso(a)p2pfoundation.net" <staccotroncoso(a)p2pfoundation.net>, Ann Marie Utratel <amu444(a)gmail.com>, George Pór <george.por(a)gmail.com> Subject: Re: [P2P-F] Reflections on Trump, and the role of the commons as an alternative Message-ID: <CACpSwUdZqSw4ACPO1VXL1B7s3XO1aELUz09My4yeFuUc-zbn2A(a)mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8" I completely agree Michel with your analysis of how the left have been co-opted into supporting the neoliberal agenda. The other trend on the more radical left over the last 30 years has been the rejection of parliamentary politics in favour of localism. The risks of a puritan anti-state left politics are that they have no organised opposition to challenge the capture of the state by reactionary right wing forces. If the left is not occupying those seat the right will. Liberals have successfully co-opted aspects of the left into the institutions of capitalism, with the collapse of the soviet union, the end of history, the establishment left that includes academics without a serious alternative assumed liberalism was a given and committed to working for change from within a liberal framework. No one expected a resurgence of fascism. Spend any time researching this and you quickly realise it is huge. It is important to think about the young people who are being recruited to extreme right, what paths have lead them to participate in these communities. The extreme right have not had the privilege of access to government, academic institutions or mainstream media and so they waste no time trying to get papers published or to lobby governments to support their policies, no they are entirely focused on recruiting online not through reason but through myth, tapping into young peoples anxieties and offering them insurgent narratives, vision and mythology. Where do young people go to learn about the world. Youtube. The extreme right have made really effective use of this as a medium for recruitment. Unlike academics, politicians so on who mostly talk to each other. The right engage with these young people in 'debate'. The problem is also the narrative. Liberals and the left offer complex narratives. Liberal politics has become a bureaucratic and there are establishment gatekeepers. The extreme right offer simple narratives with naive hero myths which appeal to young people who the right claim are raised being taught left politics of victimhood and blame in universities. The promise of figures like Trump is that he does not care for checks and balances, he is the image of the authoritarian who overcomes, the complexities of politics, the cynical power plays of bureaucrats and experts, he does this by sheer force of charismatic will, cheered on by his followers who have simply lost patience with the status quo. This is the modus operandi of fascism. This has emboldened the far right, those who previously entertained these ideas in private for fear of social censure are coming out and organising. Berger is an expert on online extremism and has done significant work on how Isis use social media to recruit and organise at scale. In this video he explains how the far right are using the same tactics but do not face the same kinds of limitations as Isis. He talks about the relative impact of small groups on shaping public discourse. He is not at all convinced that western governments have the capacity to effectively deal with this turn. We are looking at highly organised fascist recruitment and propaganda machine. It cannot be tolerated and must face full resistance that means alliances of everyone committed to democratic process. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=65YJmfRbbPw https://cchs.gwu.edu/sites/cchs.gwu.edu/files/downloads/ Nazis%20v.%20ISIS%20Final_0.pdf Part of that is offering real alternative political imaginaries, and making those imaginaries available and accessible to young people is essential. What would a popular alternative movement look like? One that moves beyond the horizontalism of Occupy and aims effectively to get hands dirty, to take power and put it to work for the kind of world we want to live in. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Attended this workshop last year. Very enjoyable. Beautiful location, wonderful food, great company. Deep exploration of the fundamentals of alternative currency design with Thomas Greco. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Thomas Greco <thg(a)mindspring.com> Date: 9 February 2017 at 00:59 Subject: Thomas Greco’s Summer Workshop in Greece To: kev.flanagan(a)gmail.com ------------------------------ Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <http://us7.campaign-archive1.com/?u=3cbee2e1cfc237bcae4ed6959&id=733264b4df…>. *Thomas Greco’s 2017 Summer Workshop in Greece* Following last summer’s exciting and successful workshop in Greece, Thomas Greco will again this summer be conducting a workshop in *Monetary and Financial Innovation for the New Economy *at the Alexandros campus of the Kalikalos Holistic Summer School on the beautiful Pelion peninsula in Greece. In this week-long workshop we will examine the problems and deficiencies of both conventional money and local currencies and exchange systems, and delve into the principles and practices of innovative exchange and finance. Over the past three decades, a great many complementary currencies and exchange schemes have sprung up, gained some degree of acceptance and notoriety, then faded away. This workshop will focus in on the reasons why none of them has become a significant factor in their community economies, and uncover the principles of design and implementation that need to be applied to make exchange alternatives more effective, robust, and scalable. It will also cover new ways of providing entrepreneurs with the resources needed to bring their ideas to fruition and achieve success in the marketplace. This course is designed especially for social entrepreneurs, government officials, enthusiastic agents of change, and serious students who are ready to co-create a new sustainable and convivial economy from the bottom up. In this highly participatory workshop, we will use a combination of presentations, discussion groups (some on the beach), videos, and simulation games, to dive deeply into the process of exploring and developing innovative methods of finance, exchange, and value measurement. Participants will have the opportunity to showcase their projects and ideas and receive feedback from the group. Here is an opportunity to work with one of the world’s leading experts in innovative economics, finance, and exchange, and to collaborate with like-minded peers to create a new economy that works for everyone, while enjoying a delightful summer holiday on the magical Pelion peninsula. Come join us in a process of inquiry, discovery, sharing and collaboration. The workshop will run from 16 to 23 June, 2017.
