WeWork buys Meetup.com for a reported $200 MM | The Guardian OpEd To: FYI Evgeny Morozov opines on the "hippie Taylorism" phenomenon, and the well-funded and hungrily acquisitive office space giant WeWork buying up Meetup.com. For-profit platform companies seeking to monetize and colonize the community space for fun and profit because gradual organic growth serving real people is too slow and unprofitable 😕 https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/dec/03/ digital-hippies-integrate-life-and-work- <https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/dec/03/digital-hippies-integ…> wework <https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/dec/03/digital-hippies-integ…> -data-firms <https://amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2017/dec/03/digital-hippies-integ…> The Hustle and WIRED have more background on the acquisition itself, and the community space race, which escaped my notice in such a busy news cycle: "Since their inception in 2002, Meetup’s raised relatively little funding ($18m compared with their reported $200m valuation), and according to CEO and co-founder Scott Heiferman, they’ve broken even in the past few years despite not raising any additional capital since ‘08. But they’re not satisfied with scraping by anymore" https://thehustle.co/wework-buys-meetup "But Heiferman is no longer intrigued by the notion of remaining small. It’s clear to him that there’s an urgency to the problem that Meetup has long tried to solve. It’s also clear to everyone else, which means there’s now competition. Earlier this year, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company would sink more resources into its efforts to build communities. It convened hundreds of Facebook group administrators in Chicago for a Community Summit. Zuckerberg attended and used the event to unveil a new mission for the company: 'bring the world closer together.'" https://www.wired.com/story/why- <https://www.wired.com/story/why-wework-is-buying-meetup>wework <https://www.wired.com/story/why-wework-is-buying-meetup>-is-buying-meetup <https://www.wired.com/story/why-wework-is-buying-meetup>/ Regards, - Nurul -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: [bgcon] "State Machines" | Open Call for works | Deadline Jan. 31 2018
by Michel Bauwens 08 Dec '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Krystian Woznicki <kw(a)berlinergazette.de> Date: Fri, Dec 8, 2017 at 9:43 AM Subject: [bgcon] "State Machines" | Open Call for works | Deadline Jan. 31 2018 To: digi-yards(a)berlinergazette.de Hi, some organisations in the European neighboorhood of Berliner Gazette are organising a very interesting project entitled STATE MACHINES that actually addresses some of the key concerns of FRIENDLY FIRE, BG's last annual conference theme that inquired into the politics of citizenship. Please see the call below and spread the word about it! Kind regards, Krystian -- Open Call for works State Machines <http://news.neme.org/1833/www.statemachines.eu> is a programme of activities devoted to the investigation of new relationships between states, citizens and the stateless made possible by emerging technologies. Focussing on how such technologies impact identity and citizenship, digital labour and finance, the project joins five experienced partners – Aksioma <http://aksioma.org/> (Slovenia), Drugo More <http://drugo-more.hr/> (Croatia), Furtherfield <https://www.furtherfield.org/> (UK), Institute of Network Cultures <http://networkcultures.org/> (Netherlands) and NeMe <http://www.neme.org> (Cyprus) together with a range of artists, curators, theorists and audiences. Every time a smartphone powers up, their user is tied inextricably into data, laws and flowing bytes to different countries. Their every personal expression is framed and mediated by digital platforms which now include those operating new kinds of currencies, financial exchange, and labour relations that bypass corporations and governments. Meanwhile these same technologies increase governmental powers of surveillance, allow corporations to extract ever more complex working arrangements, and, although seemingly the epitome of globalization, they do little to slow the construction of actual walls along actual borders. We ask how might the digital subjects of today become active, engaged, and effective digital citizens of tomorrow? State Machines now launches an open call for a new commissioned artistic project. WHAT KIND OF PROJECT? We are interested in works that explore shifts in agency towards individuals, groups and commons from nation states and private companies. We invite proposals that draw on first-hand experiences in: - efforts and actions that resist new enclosures and preserve mobilities, freedom of assembly and other hard-won rights - unintended impacts of digital flows on physical bodies, places and infrastructure - shifting techniques for controls and flows of information and finance by governments, private companies and individuals; - public deliberation and free speech in social media – algorithmic and human corruption and its counterforces; - new tools and data for wrangling the personal and political impacts of cloud computing The call is open to artists, technologists, activists, inventors and individuals, groups and hybrid human – artificial intelligence collaborations. We are interested in all art forms and actions that can be encountered and experienced across networks, online and in physical exhibition. We welcome diverse viewpoints, experimental and playful approaches. HOW WE WILL SUPPORT THE PROJECT 1. State Machines will support the production of the selected proposal with 5.000 € towards fees and production costs. 2. State Machines will assist in all phases of the production process. 3. The final project will be exhibited in at least two offline and one online exhibition during 2018 & 2019. 4. Depending on the nature of the project, State Machines will be excited to present and distribute the new project through partners’ channels and communication networks. Which a diverse range of organisations, from museums to online galleries and project spaces to festivals, with a range of specialisms across production, participation, engagement, critical thinking and publication. CONDITIONS - This call is open to individuals or groups working across any artforms and/or technologies in Europe. - The proposed project can be online and/or offline. If online only, please consider how it could be translated (i.e. shown, exhibited, narrated) in physical space. - Applicants should either have an established background in their respective fields and/or explain how this opportunity will assist the development of a new project. - We especially welcome proposals for new work. Yet, we will be happy to help in the extension of existing projects if our contribution will be key to develop them towards a new direction or critically enhance them so they will achieve a new dimension. DEADLINE & HOW TO APPLY Applications must be received by *23:59 (CET) on Wednesday 31 January 2018.* Complete application must include the following: 1. Resume – including contact information, maximum 2 A4 pages 2. Project Proposal – detailing the project concept, maximum 2 A4 pages 3. Project Budget proposal – with a breakdown of how you will spend the €5000 budget, maximum 1 A4 page 4. Support Material – including examples of previous work, any relevant urls, any visuals (data flow, sketches, timeline, schematics, etc.) that will help us better understand the proposal and your practice. Fwd: Gates Foundation Hired PR Firm to Manipulate UN Over Gene Drives

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jonathan Latham <jrlatham(a)bioscienceresource.org> Date: Mon, Dec 4, 2017 at 6:09 AM Subject: Gates Foundation Hired PR Firm to Manipulate UN Over Gene Drives To: bsr-PROJECT-ELIST1(a)gn.apc.org Dear Friends and Colleagues Published today, Monday Dec. 4th 2017 by *Independent Science News*: *Gates Foundation Hired PR Firm to Manipulate UN Over Gene Drives* by Jonathan Latham, PhD https://www.independentsciencenews.org/news/gates-foundation-hired- pr-firm-to-manipulate-un-over-gene-drives/ *Synopsis:* Dec 5th is the opening day of a UN meeting in Montreal whose purpose is to help governments protect biodiversity. That meeting may decide the fate of gene drives, a technology in which the Gates Foundation is heavily invested, especially through its Target Malaria project. Gene drives are an experimental genetic technology intended to cause population extinctions. Freedom of Information act emails obtained from the University of North Carolina and released today, however, show that, in advance of that meeting, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has for months been seeking to secretly influence its outcome in favour of gene drive use. The Foundation has hired a PR consultancy which then recruited large numbers of academics and has been guiding their participation to sway an online forum organised to prepare for the Montreal meeting. This preparation has been coordinated with the insider help of three of the main participants of that upcoming UN meeting.
