key must-read essay on ecological transition in china, and why it can't happen
by Michel Bauwens 16 Dec '17

Richard Smith, “China’s drivers and planetary ecological collapse”, real-world economics review, issue no. 82, 13 December 2017, pp. 2-28, http://www.paecon.net/PAEReview/issue82/Smith82.pdf see for excerpts: https://wiki.p2pfoundation.net/Ecological_Transition_in_China Dear all, My recent trip to China was a bit of a wake up call for me, discovering the official pivot towards ecological transformation, and while many good initiatives and plans are on the table, this analsys convincingly shows why despite all these efforts, they can't succeed under present political and social conditions. In terms of the global situation and our prospects for ecological salvation, this is really really an essential and must-strategic read. This doesn't mean I will stop inquiring about their successes with biocapacity indicators and footprint efforts of course, but it sets everything in a much more realistic light. Richard Smith looks like a genius analyst in my mind and what he says about the nature of the recent regime is absolutely stellar, -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

We also don’t like censorship, and we don’t like bots disrupting democracy. So, in the past weeks, we’ve written extensively about the debate at the FCC over net neutrality <https://wired.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d6a9b4ef731bfa16b27259de6&i…>. Today, we write with both sorrow and anger, because in a 3-2 vote, the Commission stripped away those neutrality protections. But we’re not defeated. As Klint Finley <https://wired.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d6a9b4ef731bfa16b27259de6&i…> explains in his piece, there’s much that can still be done <https://wired.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d6a9b4ef731bfa16b27259de6&i…> to help the Internet remain the force for innovation that it has been. For starters, the lawyers are about to come on stage. And even if net neutrality can’t be saved in the courts, perhaps it can be saved in Congress, ideally through bipartisan collaboration. We’re not stepping away from the fight, and we’ve got lots of thoughts on how our readers can stay involved <https://wired.us8.list-manage.com/track/click?u=d6a9b4ef731bfa16b27259de6&i…> too. *Nicholas Thompson* * Editor-in-Chief, WIRED [image: Image removed by sender.] <https://www.wired.com/story/after-fcc-vote-net-neutrality-fight-moves-to-co…> *After the Vote <https://www.wired.com/story/after-fcc-vote-net-neutrality-fight-moves-to-co…> * The FCC Just Killed Net Neutrality. We believe ,as in the law in the European Union and other countries that the internet is a public utility , which should remain under the FCC’s Title 2 rules as a common carrier. Just moments ago, the FCC voted to kill net neutrality and break the Internet as we know it. *But we’re not done fighting—not even close.* *The fight now moves to Congress, which has 60 legislative days to overturn the FCC’s decision once the order takes effect.* We’re launching an all-out campaign to convince a majority in the House and Senate to vote to overrule this outrageous giveaway to Comcast and Verizon. *Will you chip in to convince Congress to use their Congressional Review Act (CRA) powers to overturn the FCC’s net neutrality repeal?* <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…> We’re in a good position to make this happen. The majority of House Republicans did not endorse a letter supporting the FCC’s repeal. And in the Senate we may be starting as close as 50/50, given that Susan Collins issued a letter opposing the agency’s decision. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai may want to give his former employer Verizon the right to throttle speeds and charge new fees to websites and apps, but the American people disagree—and Congress has the power under the Congressional Review Act to overrule that decision. *That’s why we've been mobilizing pressure on Congress for weeks by driving over a million calls to lawmakers as part of a growing grassroots backlash, and why with your help we’ll keep up the pressure right up to the deadline for Congress to act.* And even if Congress fails to act, we STILL won’t stop. The battle for net will simply continue on other fronts: - We will bring the fight to the courts by supporting lawsuits challenging the FCC’s ruling. - We will convince more lawmakers to join the 6 Republicans who have already opposed the FCC’s plan. - We’ll make sure voters know where their members of Congress stand on net neutrality so they can act accordingly on Election Day. This is a moment we hoped we’d be able to stop, or delay. But this is our pledge to you: We will not let Comcast and Verizon kill the free and open Internet, and we won't stop until the Internet that we love is safe. *Will you chip in so we can keep the heat on Congress and defend the Internet we love?* <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…> DONATE <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…> For the future, Holmes at FFTF Fight for the Future works to protect your rights in the digital age. - Click here to learn more <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…> - Donate $3 to keep us going <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…> - Click here to receive fewer emails from us <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…> PO Box 55071 #95005 Boston, MA 02205 Sent via ActionNetwork.org <http://click.actionnetwork.org/mpss/c/-AA/ni0YAA/t.2d9/8DSEGSEEShSAPpIVofan…>. strongly recommended article on climate strategy

see https://thenearlynow.com/the-real-politics-of-the-planetary-crisis-21622932… some quotes to give you a taste: "We’re winning too slowly. If we can only achieve incremental progress when large-scale change is needed, we lose. If we set large-scale action in motion, but only after such a prolonged fight that it’s no longer possible to meet the curve ahead of us, we fail. Indeed, winning too slowly is the same thing as losing. This last point is really critical. What the steepening curves of climate action tell us, above all else, is that when we act matters as much — arguably, even, far more — than the specific set of actions we take. Speed is everything. Our best-paced efforts today will leave our children with a planet 3.5º C hotter; in effect, a different planet, a strange planet, a world where nothing is ever “normal” again." To head off the planetary crisis, we have to stop emitting carbon. That means we have to stop burning coal, oil and gas. It also means that systems that depend on fossil fuels will have to radically change or end, too. There’s no time left for gradual-but-eventually-ambitious plans. All real climate action demands fundamentally dismantling the fossil fuel economy over the next three decades." For high-carbon industries to continue to be attractive investments, then, they must spin a tale of future growth. They must make potential investors believe that even if there is a Carbon Bubble, it is decades away from popping — that their high profits today will continue for the foreseeable future, so their stock is worth buying.” All the Carbon Lobby needs to do to reap gargantuan profits is to forestall serious climate action for another decade or so. All they need to do is to lose slowly. That same decade, of course, is the last one we have to avoid catastrophic losses." Having long opposed any action, now dirty companies are appearing to moderate by conceding the need for “reasonable” action, paced “responsibly.” So now you have oil companies lending tentative support to pricing carbon, encouraging the use of natural gas to replace coal, acknowledging that climate science is real, and so on. They’re ready, they say, to start negotiating. This is how they make sure they lose only slowly: engage, but ask for compromises and draw out the process. Climate gradualism — “we all want to act on climate, but we also have to be slow, incremental and realistic” — is the new climate denialism. It’s a brilliant (if vile) move: As long as we believe that climate is a collective action problem, we will easily fall prey to gradualism. If we’re all in it together, if we need everyone moving forward to solve this problem, then we must meet our opponents in the middle and hope to nudge them forward. If oil companies are ready for a low carbon price implemented sometime in the future, well. that’s at least a start (or so the thinking goes). The idea that the planetary crisis is a negotiation of equally good-faith players all trying to solve a set of complex challenges leaves us defenseless to this sort of sociopathic manipulation. If, on the other hand, we understand the planetary crisis for what it truly is — a zero-sum game with everything at stake; one in which a a relatively small group of investors and executives have the chance to make trillions of dollars, but can only do so at the cost of massive losses in the rest of the economy, destruction of the living fabric of much of life on Earth and the diminishment of opportunity for billions of others, for generations — then the whole debate shifts. We then see gradualism as the threat it is. When we see clearly, we understand that the only strategy that can work to save humanity from the nightmares it has set in motion is a strategy of making the Carbon Lobby and their supporters lose, and lose as fast as possible." -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Open access book: The Spectacle 2.0: Reading Debord in the Context of Digital Capitalism

New open access book The Spectacle 2.0: Reading Debord in the Context of Digital Capitalism, edited by Marco Briziarelli and Emiliana Armano, University of Westminster Press "Critical Digital & Social Media Studies" book series (ed. C. Fuchs), Volume 5 Spectacle 2.0 recasts Debord's theory of spectacle within the frame of 21st century digital capitalism. It offers a reassessment of Debord’s original notion of Spectacle from the late 1960s, of its posterior revisitation in the 1990s, and it presents a reinterpretation of the concept within the scenario of contemporary informational capitalism and more specifically of digital and media labour. It is argued that the Spectacle 2.0 form operates as the interactive network that links through one singular (but contradictory) language and various imaginaries, uniting diverse productive contexts such as logistics, finance, new media and urbanism. Spectacle 2.0 thus colonizes most spheres of social life by processes of commodification, exploitation and reification. Diverse contributors consider the topic within the book’s two main sections: Part I conceptualizes and historicizes the Spectacle in the context of informational capitalism; contributions in Part II offer empirical cases that historicise the Spectacle in relation to the present (and recent past) showing how a Spectacle 2.0 approach can illuminate and deconstruct specific aspects of contemporary social reality. All contributions included in this book rework the category of the Spectacle to present a stimulating compendium of theoretical critical literature in the fields of media and labour studies. In the era of the gig-economy, highly mediated content and President Trump, Debord’s concept is arguably more relevant than ever. https://www.uwestminsterpress.co.uk/site/books/10.16997/book11/ https://www.uwestminsterpress.co.uk/site/books/series/critical-digital-and-…
