Fwd: How Do We Get There? The Problem of Action (GTN Discussion)
by Michel Bauwens 12 Nov '17

12 Nov '17

The November GTN discussion will take up the overarching challenge of shaping a systemic global movement. To structure the exchange, I have drafted a short note that summarizes GTI’s approach to date, and poses broad discussion questions. Please read it at www.greattransition.org/ publication/How-do-we-get-there. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Mon, Nov 6, 2017 at 9:41 PM Subject: How Do We Get There? The Problem of Action (GTN Discussion) To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com >From Ronaldo Munck <ronnie.munck(a)dcu.ie> ------------------------------------------------------- Colleagues, This is a very important call, and I thank you for it. I would like to pose a friendly critique from someone who comes with a Southern view and one that is closely engaged with the trade union movement, not exactly a ‘new’ social movement. I am slightly uncomfortable with the notion posed of a ‘global citizens movement’ insofar as it seems to lean on the global civil society project which I see as very ‘Northern’. Global civil society is often seen as the royal road to democratization, market regulation, and “the good life”. The main international NGOs are almost exclusively Northern in terms of their social base, their cosmology, and their politics. Can these NGOs “represent” global civil society in any meaningful way? Even that most ostensibly universal of concepts that of “universal human rights” is cut across by the history of colonialism, imperialism, and cultural dominance. For me, globalization and its contestation will take more complex forms than a simple unfolding of global civil society as privileged terrain for progressive social change based on shared moral values. The future of this dialectic will be resolved through political struggle and cannot be short-circuited by definitional fiat that declares GSC or a putative global citizens movement as a ready-made royal road to global democracy. One possible alternative to build the systemic movement you seek might be Karl Polanyi's problematic which poses the possibility that history advances through a series of ‘double movements’. So market expansion, on the one hand, leads to the ‘one big market’ we call globalization today. Yet, as Polanyi argued in his day and we could argue today, ‘simultaneously a counter-movement was afoot’ that reacted against the dislocation of society and the attack on the very fabric of society that the self-regulating market led to. The ‘double movement’ consisted of economic liberalism driving the extension of the self-regulating market on the one hand and the principle of ‘social protection’ on the other hand defending social interests from the deleterious action of the market. Today, we can relate the metaphor of the ‘double movement’ to those socio-political forces which wish to assert more democratic control over political life. Movements struggling for national or regional sovereignty (Catalonia?), those seeking to protect the environment, and the plethora of movements advancing claims for social justice or recognition are all part of this broad counter-movement. In different, but inter-related ways they are bids to re-embed the economy in social relations. Challenging the movement towards commodification, they seek to ‘decommodify’ society and reassert moral and cultural values. Against materialism and market-determined values, the social counter-movement generated by neo-liberal globalization brings to the fore the democracy of civil society and the social value of all we do. I have always valued the Foresight perspective and have used it productively both as a university ‘manager’ and in a development context. But I think we need a bit more texture to our concepts and more engagement with theories and practice coming out of the Global South. Ronaldo ****************************************************** Thursday, November 2, 2017 >From Paul Raskin <praskin(a)tellus.org> ----- Dear GTN, Forthcoming essays and discussions will spotlight questions of social agency and collective action: Who will change the world? What does the change look like? How must we act to make it happen? Specifically, we will consider the potential role of key social movements—indigenous, rights, labor, climate, ecofeminist, peace, and others—in driving a Great Transition. But before launching this new series, let’s first set the larger context. A revised version and selected commentary will be published as a GTI Roundtable in December. GTN veterans will be excused a sense of déjà vu. From the get-go, GTI has posited a “global citizens movement” (GCM) as a critical social actor in the GT scenario, and periodically discussed actions for mobilizing it, prompting a real-world experiment, The Widening Circle campaign of 2010-12 ( www.wideningcircle.org/) But that was then. The world changes, urgency grows, and many new voices are among us. It’s timely to search afresh for answers to the pressing question of transformative action. Because we’re getting a late start, the discussion will go through Tuesday, December 5. Especially welcome are comments on the shape of the global movement we need and possible initiatives to catalyze it. Comments that dwell on reasons for pessimism or inaction, or on existing projects (hundreds of important ones are represented in this network), not so much. Transition management researchers tend to miss the mediating power of designing in their theories of change. But more significantly, designers, even those working on wicked problems, are not well-informed about strategies for effecting multi-stage, systems-level change in our societies. Terry Irwin will explain the Transition Design model that has been developed to teach designers about ways of realising longer term change. Terry will share recent project work in which a range of stakeholders in Ojai, California, have used a range of tools to develop shared visions for transitioning their community to more careful water usage. *Professor Terry Irwin* is the Head of the School of Design at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in the USA and has been teaching at university level since 1986. Her research is in Transition Design, a new area of design study, practice and research that argues for societal transition toward more sustainable futures. Terry, along with Gideon Kossoff and Cameron Tonkinwise developed Transition Design and integrated it into programs and curricula at the School of Design in 2014. *Professor Cameron Tonkinwise* is Professor of Design at the University of NSW in Sydney and a strong advocate for the importance of critical practice-based design research. In collaboration with colleagues at CMU and an international network of scholar-practitioners, he continues to research and develop Transition Design as a design-enabled, multi-level, multi-stage approach to structural change toward more sustainable futures. *Registration for this workshop will open next week when you will receive an invitation.* IF YOU NO LONGER WISH TO RECEIVE THESE NOTIFICATIONS PLEASE REPLY TO THIS EMAIL WITH* 'UNSUBSCRIBE' *IN THE SUBJECT LINE -- ------------------------------ UTS CRICOS Provider Code: 00099F DISCLAIMER: This email message and any accompanying attachments may contain confidential information. Fwd: An equitable, pro-environmental economy sanitized from capital mkt bubbles
by Michel Bauwens 12 Nov '17

dear all, the author prefers not to see this published online, it's for solliciting feedback only at this stage, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jason Ghionis <jason(a)clickhere.gr> Date: Sun, Nov 12, 2017 at 6:03 PM Subject: An equitable, pro-environmental economy sanitized from capital mkt bubbles Hi all, In the past I’ve been reticent to share some of the ideas here, at least in the following, comprehensive format. However, given how the environmental clock is ticking... I think it’s beyond mandatory to share. *OBJECTIVE* *An economy sanitized from capital mkt bubbles, pro-environmental and equitable* So far, no one has been able to convincingly challenge the following model, parts of which I’ve outlined in greater detail here <http://positivemoney.org/2015/10/economic-myth-and-transformation/> (note: I’m no longer involved with PM). *Step 1* Strip commercial banks of the privilege/monopoly of issuing interest bearing, IOU currency *Step 2* Apply negative interest to all cash and cash equivalents *Step 3* Redistribute all negative interest proceeds via UBI *Step 4* Denominate all speculative financial instruments (equities, derivatives, convertible bonds etc.) in parallel currency; a "sanitization" process whereby capital market bubbles will not be able to affect the Real economy. *Step 5* Adjust and fine tune. ----------------------- *WHAT IS ACCOMPLISHED* With *step 1*: An end to private bank debtocracy (re inequality + minimize asset bubbles) + an end to the environmentally detrimental “growth imperative”. With *step 2*: Currency serves a pro-environmental function. With negative interest, all financial evaluation models reverse, rendering resource extraction beyond the Earth's carrying capacity, *unprofitable*. With *step 3*: Equitability, actualization-flourishing-potential realization across the entire population. With *step 4*: If a bubble is created, the parallel cap market currency depreciates, adjusting for the bubble. In other words, the real economy becomes immune to financial market bubbles. With *step 5*: As with any dynamic, complex-adaptive system, constant tweaks are the norm. Hopefully I'm not in La la land here. Since the use of quantitative measurements can be a means to a biased end, *data and evidence* from the social sciences *can be used for regressive ends,* especially depending on what is measured. The question for human rights (HR) activists is: *Can we*, without the economic clout or the power to mobilize citizens, *use* the fruits of *measurement as valuable advocacy tools to promote progressive change* in public policies? (Bill Jeffries) 2. I do not deny: While measurement is a key component of understanding and addressing development progress, I do want to point out that *there are limitations associated with indicator-based measurement tools* (think SDGs) including: • *Indicators are often developed on the basis of what data exists and not on how to best measure progress* towards normative goals. • Indicators have analytic limitations and *the selection of indicators is never a neutral process.* • There are limitations to imposing indicators designed in one context (e.g., global) to another context (e.g., local). 3. Emphasizing the *quantification* of change *can* thus *lead to mistaking means* (using quantitative measures for reporting or tracking social change) *for ends* (reporting or tracking qualitative transformations). This is often used to stir emotions…(i) (Think Trump) (i): The Oxford Dictionary added the word post-truth and defined it as the situation in which objective facts or data influence less than calls to emotions and to personal beliefs. There thus is a ‘true truth’ and an ‘emotional truth’ and the latter can be said to be a lie-transformed-by-an-emotion as long as it becomes the belief of a majority. 4. A wider variety of data and news sources was supposed to be the safeguard of a rational age. However, studies repeatedly show that *when confronted with diverse information choices, people rarely act like rational, civic-minded automatons.* Instead, we are influenced by preconceptions and biases, and we usually do what feels easiest; *we gorge on information that confirms our ideas*, and we shun what does not. (think human rights) If we see something we do not like, we can easily tap away to something more pleasing. Then we all share what we found with our like-minded social networks, creating closed-off, shoulder-patting circles online. This creates an ecosystem in which *the truth value of the information does not matter. All that matters is whether the information fits in our narrative.* http://www.nytimes.com/2016/ 11/03/technology/how-the-internet-is-loosening-our- grip-on-the-truth.html?_r=1 *From data to communications* Optimism in the world of today can only mean a lack of ‘true truth’ information. (Albino Gomez) 5. In this era of exploding communications, let me here just quote a couple of *respectable opinions*: • In modern times, *more than communicate we actually ‘connect with each other’*. Moreover, we live overwhelmed by trying to take in all the information on offer, but *we spend less time thinking*. (A. Gomez) • *Social media have given legions of idiots the right to talk*, something they previously only did in a neighborhood bar with a glass of beer in their hand --and this did not hurt anybody. (Umberto Eco) • Used recreationally, *the Internet risks reducing users to mindless clickers*, racing numbly to the bottom of a bottomless feed; *but done well, it has* the *potential* to expand and augment the very action-oriented HR and development space that more and more of us pursue. (Roberto Bisio) • At any moment, *public opinion is a chaos* of superstition, disinformation and prejudice. (Gore Vidal) • True wisdom does not come from a mere accumulation of *data* that *end up saturating * in a sort of mental contamination. (Pope Francis) *From communications to the news media* Today, achieving a TV appearance has become a sign of elegance and status… (U. Eco) 6. Best here as well is to quote some *more respectable opinions*: • Not innocently, *the media neglect offering a reading of the true world* situation. Why? Because *information has openly become a trade good*. The media are no longer profitable and whoever purchases the different media outlets has a personal interest. *Human Rights are ‘too abstract’ for the media* and so we end up not having a rational view of the world and *we end up not knowing much of anything other than what is sensationalized*. (R. Bissio) • *Newspapers are the toys of a few rich men*. Capitalists and editors are the new tyrants that have grabbed hold of the world. The media themselves have become the censors. Newspapers started existing to tell the truth, but today they exist to impede the truth is told. (G. K. Chesterton, 1874-1936) [Nothing new under the sun…]. • *The elite makes* good use of its paid agents in academia, in think tanks, in the corporate media and elsewhere to make *sure that you are kept carefully misinformed* and told what to think and how to react. (R. Burrowes) • *People’s politics are increasingly defined by the media they consume* rather than by loyalty to parties. (P. Iglesias) • *Freedom of expression: What good is it if the other does not listen?* (A. Gomez) • Can average readers *distinguish fact from opinion*, for instance from incompetent (or mal-intentioned) coverage? (S. Mysorekar) [Think fake news]. • Every day, as I read the newspapers, it is as if I am attending a history lesson. *Newspapers teach me by what they say and importantly by what they do not*. Just a few days ago the text was made open access, so I am sharing it here with you. https://roarmag.org/magazine/right-city-age-austerity/ While writing the piece, I found out it was difficult to produce a coherent narrative on grassroots politics and urban commoning without falling into cliches, exaggerations and simplifications. Reflecting the complexity of struggles in a context of generalized mobilization in the 3000-word essay format has been a challenge. I am writing today to ask you for help with a special project. After hurricane Maria devastated the island, Liz and I worked with a group of friends and colleagues for several weeks to develop a project to bring solar power to Puerto Rico after the destruction of their electric grid. We are planning to purchase off-the-grid solar units and distribute them to small communities throughout the island with the help of a network of women’s organizations. We have called the organization we formed “Barrio Solar,” and we just set up a website, twitter account, and crowdfunding page. I am attaching a copy of our press release, which contains further details. The last line of the press release contains links to the website and twitter. Clicking on “DONATE” on the website will take you to the crowdfunding page, which contains more information, including a short video. Our initial goal is to raise $25,000. One hundred percent of that money will go to help the people of Puerto Rico. We are off to a great start. During the first few days we raised about $5,000. Please be so kind and disseminate this press release widely in your network. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: American Sustainable Business Council <replies(a)asbcouncil.org> Date: Fri, Nov 10, 2017 at 3:40 AM Subject: November Policy Update: SUSTYBIZ Recap, High Road Report, and more To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Can’t read this email? Click here <http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=dVuAx8xcrAL6DpsVjOWdbjxgSPm1j…> [image: American Sustainable Business Council] SUSTYBIZ17 Delivers Insights and Connections ASBC’s 6th Annual Sustainable Business & Policy Summit gave an inside look at how the public policy process works. On day one, federal and state legislators, political strategists, journalists and business leaders explored how responsible businesses can improve lawmaking on climate change, diversity, minimum wages and the role of money in politics. This year’s SUSTY Award presentations honored Senator Sheldon Whitehouse; Senator Angus King; Representative Elijah Cummings; Holly Sklar, founder and CEO of Business for a Fair Minimum Wage; Barry Cik, founder and technical director of Naturepedic; and Jerry Taylor, president of the Niskanen Center. Day two led off with Senator Bernie Sanders joining us live for a discussion <http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=btchaA4s2Fs1Pj2bM%2BmPoUp2hez…> of healthcare reform. Summit attendees then fanned out across the Capitol to meet with nearly 40 legislators and staff to talk about carbon pricing, healthcare reform, tax reform, and family medical leave. As one inspired business owner concluded, “This Summit was full of insights and learning opportunities to effectively advocate on issues that matter to sustainable companies.” Thanks to all who joined this game-changing event. * What's New High-Road How-to Report Available ASBC has released a new report, The High-Road Workplace: Route to a Sustainable Economy. Based on interviews with companies that offer a range of valued employee practices and benefits, the report makes the sound business case for taking the high road. It also shows how these practices improve the wider economy and society, and offers specific strategies policymakers can use to spur widespread adoption of high-road practices for a more sustainable, resilient nation. And the Senate version is expected today. Many legislators are pushing to get this done by Christmas, but this complicated bill deserves more review. Tell Congress you oppose pushing through a bill that will cause big deficits, worsen inequality, and undermine U.S. ability to invest for economic growth. The bill, being pitched as a paid-leave policy, sets a lower national standard for employers than some current state-level standards. Tell Congress you oppose federal legislation that undermines existing laws that call for high-road employment practices and instead only provides camouflage for bad actors. The Office has again contracted with a research team that previously provided inaccurate, widely discredited analyses of how regulations affect small businesses. ASBC is considering the Coalition’s recent proposal to tax energy producers, return revenues to residents and businesses and invest in new green energy initiatives. David Levine stated, “Over the past eight-plus years, Richard has made significant, unique contributions to the emergence and growth of ASBC and its national policy, fundraising and communications work. Richard’s portfolio of responsibilities was extensive, as was his capacity to build key relationships and coalitions with critical stakeholders on Capitol Hill, the Obama White House, state legislatures, businesses and allied organizations. His vision of, and commitment to build, a powerful national advocacy force for sustainable businesses from all sectors and all sizes has been important to countering the profit at all cost narrative. We thank Richard for his many years of commitment and selfless leadership, and wish him the very best.” ASBC’s policy team will now be led by Chris Blackburn <cblackburn(a)asbcouncil.org>, Director of Policy, who will continue to advance the organization’s mission to create sustainable economic development, environmental protection and regeneration, and social justice. * Media Coverage, Blogs, and More: - The High-Road Workplace: Route to a Sustainable Economy <http://org2.salsalabs.com/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=WEDKO%2BNJ2bufRbEPRdbs2DxgSPm…> - ASBC’s groundbreaking report describes what it means to be a high-road business, why it matters, and how smart policy can help more businesses adopt high-road practices.
