Read on for the key findings… The Trump Ocean Club in Panama was Trump’s first international licensing deal and one of his most lucrative. Our investigation shows that a raft of dubious characters bought units or brokered deals at the Trump Ocean Club, and some of these early sales were crucial to the financing that got it built. Here’s what we found: - Initial projections indicate that Trump was set to make $75.4 million from the development by 2010. - The project came at a crucial time for Trump: he had recently emerged from his fifth business bankruptcy and he needed to salvage his reputation as a successful and legitimate businessman. - He appears to have turned a blind eye to the sources of funds used to buy units at the Trump Ocean Club. Buyers included one notorious Colombian fraudster, David Murcia Guzmán, who laundered drug money through real estate purchases in the U.S. He has recently completed a nine-year sentence in a U.S. prison, and is expected to serve a further 23 years for fraud and money laundering in Colombia. - This is how it worked: Units were bought in bulk, sales were made in cash, and secretly owned companies were used, hiding the identities of the people buying the properties – all warning signs for money laundering. *Trump may not have deliberately set out to facilitate money laundering in his business dealings at the Trump Ocean Club and he wasn’t in charge of selling the units. But he was happy to take his cut while doing little to keep it legitimate/above board.* Get the full facts and relevant responses from our investigation, Narco-a-Lago: Moneylaundering at the Trump Ocean Club, Panama – download now <https://globalwitness.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11a019056071df3aaac…> or read it online <https://globalwitness.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11a019056071df3aaac…> . <https://globalwitness.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11a019056071df3aaac…> If you’re in the U.S. be sure to watch *On Assignment with Richard Engel tonight at 9 pm EST* on MSNBC for more. *Donate now to support our work* <https://globalwitness.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=11a019056071df3aaac…> Eryn Schornick Anti-Corruption Investigator Global Witness P.S. Fwd: THE RISE OF ASIA - Paris and Le Havre, March 14-16, 2018
by Michel Bauwens 19 Nov '17

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Darwis Khudori <darwis.khudori(a)univ-lehavre.fr> Date: Sun, Nov 19, 2017 at 2:08 PM Subject: THE RISE OF ASIA - Paris and Le Havre, March 14-16, 2018 To: Sudarshan <sudarshan(a)undp.org>, Sudarshan <Ramaswamy.Sudarshan(a)undp.org>, Sombath Somphone <ssombath(a)yahoo.com>, Nicanor Perlas <npperlas(a)gmail.com>, Michel Bauwens <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com>, Francois Dear colleagues, I am pleased to inform you that the second edition of THE RISE OF ASIA CONFERENCE SERIES will take place in Paris and Le Havre on March 14-16, 2018. You find the report of the first edition and the call for papers of the second edition at http://www.bandungspirit.org/ You may also find the call for papers at the following academic networks: https://networks.h-net.org/node/73374/announcements/765431/rise-asia-global- history-and-perspective-what-local-and-global https://iias.asia/event/rise-asia-global-history- perspective-what-local-global-changes-diversity-life http://www.wikicfp.com/cfp/servlet/event.showcfp?eventid= 69543&copyownerid=104941 http://allconferencecfpalerts.com/cfp/view.php?eno=9228 I hope you could join the conference. The second edition of our conference proposes something new: STUDENT FORUM IN ASIAN STUDIES for the following rationale. Many universities in the world propose Asian Studies in their study programme. Many students in Asian Studies have produced interesting scientific works in the forms of working paper, bachelor’s or master’s thesis. Yet, their works remain unknown to the general public or academic circles due to the fact that they are not published. It seems therefore relevant to create a forum that allows students to present their work and to physically meet with their fellow students in Asian Studies from all over the world. The International and Multidisciplinary Conference on THE RISE OF ASIA IN GLOBAL HISTORY AND PERSPECTIVE that will take place in Paris and Le Havre on March 14-16, 2018, will be a good opportunity to organise such a forum. It is in this perspective that ASEA (Association of Students in Exchanges with Asia) of the University Le Havre Normandy proposes a Student Forum in Asian Studies. The Forum will take place at the University Le Havre Normandy on March 15-16, 2018. Students or fresh graduates in Asian Studies or working on subjects related to Asia from all over the world willing to participate in the Forum are invited to send the abstract of their work to <forum-masterasie(a)univ-lehavre.fr> <forum-masterasie(a)univ-lehavre.fr> So, I hope you could encourage your students to participate in the forum and help spreading this information through your networks. Thank you for your kind attention and collaboration. very important issue of the Journal of Bio-Urbanism
by Michel Bauwens 19 Nov '17

19 Nov '17

"Prof. Hakim shows how communitarian design was once the normal and substantial way cities of the Mediterranean basin grew during the last 1,500 years. In one of his most important books, for example, he explains that according to the 14th century Maliki School’s urban rules the citizens of Tunis had the right to change the design of the cul-de-sac they inhabited. The only condition was that they reached a unanimous consent on change, and thus until even just one neighbor disagreed with the majority, they needed to keep discussing and coping with a solution capable of matching everyone’s need (Hakim, 2008, pp. 26–27). see: https://journalofbiourbanism.files.wordpress.com/2017/11/jbu_epistemology_o… ARCHITECTURE WITH IDENTITY CRISIS: THE LOST HERITAGE OF THE MIDDLE EAST 81 Marwa Al-Sabouni GENERATIVE PROCESSES FOR REVITALIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT 99 Besim S. assange-trump-putin link now documented: https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2017/11/the-secret-corresponde… ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Civic Hall <info(a)civichall.org> Date: Tue, Nov 14, 2017 at 9:15 PM Subject: Civicist's First Post: Keyboard Warriors To: Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> November 14, 2017 <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> [image: First Post] <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> *Micah L. Sifry* *Keyboard Warriors* - *The big picture*: It's been another bad year for internet freedom globally, Freedom House reports in its annual report "Freedom on the Net 2017 <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…>." The biggest new finding from its survey of 67 countries that have 87% of the world's internet users: more governments are using social media to spread propaganda, with "Online manipulation and disinformation tactics play[ing] an important role in elections in at least 18 countries over the past year, including the United States." In addition, the report notes that: Venezuela, the Philippines, and Turkey were among 30 countries where governments were found to employ armies of “opinion shapers” to spread government views, drive particular agendas, and counter government critics on social media. The number of governments attempting to control online discussions in this manner has risen each year since Freedom House began systematically tracking the phenomenon in 2009. But over the last few years, the practice has become significantly more widespread and technically sophisticated, with bots, propaganda producers, and fake news outlets exploiting social media and search algorithms to ensure high visibility and seamless integration with trusted content. - This is serious, folks. As Freedom House points out: "The effects of these rapidly spreading techniques on democracy and civic activism are potentially devastating. The fabrication of grassroots support for government policies on social media creates a closed loop in which the regime essentially endorses itself, leaving independent groups and ordinary citizens on the outside." So much for John Perry Barlow's independence of cyberspace <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…>! The governments of the industrial world, those weary giants of flesh and steel, decided not to leave the internet alone. - What is to be done? Freedom House says: "Successfully countering content manipulation and restoring trust in social media—without undermining internet and media freedom—will take time, resources, and creativity. The first steps in this effort should include public education aimed at teaching citizens how to detect fake or misleading news and commentary. In addition, democratic societies must strengthen regulations to ensure that political advertising is at least as transparent online as it is offline. And tech companies should do their part by reexamining the algorithms behind news curation and more proactively disabling bots and fake accounts that are used for antidemocratic ends. In the absence of a comprehensive campaign to deal with this threat, manipulation and disinformation techniques could enable modern authoritarian regimes to expand their power and influence while permanently eroding user confidence in online media and the internet as a whole." - *Privacy, shmivacy*: EFF's *Jennifer Lynch* warns <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> that the Department of Homeland Security is moving to expand its collection and use of biometrics across its agencies, starting with the TSA's use of face recognition, iris scans and fingerprints in its PreCheck program and the Customs and Border Protection's use of face recognition to capture pictures of travelers crossing borders. Considering that no government agency or private company is capable of fully protecting private information, Lynch warns that "losing your social security or credit card numbers to fraud is nothing compared to losing your biometrics. While you can change those numbers, you can’t easily change your face." - *Trump watch*: It looks like Attorney General *Jeff Sessions* is considering appointing a special counsel to investigate some of *President Trump*'s political rivals. As *Josh Marshall *explains <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> for Talking Points Memo, this is "as bad as it looks." - A leak (how ironic) of direct messages between WikiLeaks'* Julian Assange and Donald Trump Jr.* shows that the two worked in coordination in the fall of 2016 to publicize the stolen trove of emails from Clinton campaign chairman *John Podesta*, as *Julia Ioffe* reports <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> for The Atlantic. At the time, top Trump campaigners, including *Mike Pence*, were insisting <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> that the campaign wasn't "in cahoots" with WikiLeaks. Later, Assange apparently lobbied Trump Jr. to get his dad to tell Australia to appoint him their ambassador to the US. - *Life in Facebookistan*: Facebook is now beginning to admit that it may have been a platform for Russian-linked meddling in the Brexit vote, *Mark di Stefano and Alberto Nardelli* report <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> for Buzzfeed. - Factcheckers working for third-party journalism organizations that are part of Facebook's new initiative to battle misinformation say the effort is failing and that their labor is being exploited for a PR campaign, The Guardian's *Sam Levin* reports <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> . - *Money in politics*: New York Governor *Andrew Cuomo*, who has presidential aspirations, has the most unusual campaign war-chest in modern American politics—it is almost completely bereft of contributions from small donors. Over 99% of his $25 million-plus came in donations of over $1000, reports <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> *Shane Goldmacher* of The New York Times, who quotes a small raft of tech-politics veterans—*Michael Whitney, Betsy Hoover, Zephyr Teachout,* and (drink!) *Joe Trippi*—who note how anachronous this is. Also, Goldmacher notes, for all that money, Cuomo's "website is badly outdated. The link to volunteer is broken (the page also currently echoes President Trump’s slogan: 'Governor Andrew Cuomo is fighting to make New York great again'). People who sign up for email updates do not get a welcome message, or any emails at all sometimes for months." (Ya know, that might not be a bad thing.) - *This is civic tech:* Here's a nice explainer <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> from CitizenLab on some of the differences between civic tech and govtech. My favorites: civic tech is centered on citizens as the beneficiary; govtech is centered on government as its customer. Civic tech values engagement; govtech values efficiency. - Tech humanism is gaining momentum, writes <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> *Rachel Coldicutt*, the CEO of DotEveryone in the UK. - Code for San Jose developers *Yan-Yin Choy, Lorin Camargo and Angelique De Castro* reflects <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> on participating in last month's first Code for America Brigade Congress. - VentureBeat's *Anna Hensel *reports <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> on former Googler Matt Dunne's efforts to build the Center for Rural Innovation's network of innovation hubs across rural America. - Caring Across Generations is looking to hire an email campaigner <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> and a social media manager <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> . <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> [image: Forward to a Friend] <http://us9.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d4&id=67a…> ------------------------------ [image: Civic Hall] <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> *Copyright © 2017 Civic Hall, All rights reserved.* 118 West 22nd Street, 12th Fl, New York, NY <https://maps.google.com/?q=118+West+22nd+Street,+12th+Fl,+New+York,+NY&entr…> unsubscribe <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/unsubscribe?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294…> update subscription <https://civichall.us9.list-manage.com/profile?u=784ac4a90c07e1e7ebbf294d4&i…> You are receiving this email because you've subscribed to First Post -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net Connect: http://p2pfoundation.ning.com; Discuss: http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation Updates: http://del.icio.us/mbauwens; http://friendfeed.com/mbauwens; http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: David Kyuman Kim <dkkim(a)conncoll.edu> Date: Mon, Nov 13, 2017 at 9:53 PM Subject: NYTimes Op-ed To: Love-Drive Politics Collective <lovedriven(a)googlegroups.com>, Love Driven Politics Collective <love.driven.politics(a)gmail.com> Hello friends. Today, the philosopher George Yancy and I published an op-ed in the New York Times (published in the philosophy column “The Stone”). It’s an open letter of love to Kim Jong-Un. George and I felt compelled to disrupt the acrimonious and potentially dangerous exchange between the U.S./Trump and North Korea/Kim. As you will see, the letter is deeply infused by the ethos of the Love-Driven Politics Collective. You can read the letter here: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/11/13/opinion/open-letter-kim- jongun.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Fopinion&action=click& contentCollection=opinion&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest& contentPlacement=3&pgtype=sectionfront The editor at the Times has warned us that we may receive some flashback for the letter. That a message of public love should anticipate such a response says a lot about where we are and the work that lies ahead. As always, do share the letter with your respective networks. We hope that it will catalyze some good. Accelerating rates of consumption and discard, however, continue to undermine many of these larger efforts. It is clear that we need new systems-based approaches to reduce rising levels of resource consumption and energy use in order to implement a more equitable and environmentally sustainable society and economy. Building upon the experience of our first conference, *Unmaking Waste: Transforming Production and Consumption in Time and Place* (May 2015), *Unmaking Waste 2018* will address the following themes from a similarly multidisciplinary perspective: *1. Eco-Design and Development:* Designing and managing objects, buildings, precincts and systems to reduce resource and energy use, and increase environmental and human wellbeing. *2. Sustainable Consumption:* Transforming consumption and service provision, including marketing, to better suit a resource-constrained, environmentally challenged world. 3. *Waste Minimization:* Reducing waste and pollution at all scales, in all domains and activities, and transforming waste and pollution into states of greater value for reuse. 4. *Circular Economy:* Optimizing social, material and economic relations to further the goals of the Circular Economy, including product and environment life-extension, reuse and repair. *Call for Abstracts (Deadline: December 15, 2017)* Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, and address the purpose, methods, and implications of the work to be presented. They should include a proposed title, and nominate one or more of the above themes that seem most relevant to the subject. All abstracts, conference presentations and full papers must be in English. Abstracts must be received no later than 5pm, December 15, 2017. All abstracts will be peer-reviewed and all submissions will receive a written response with feedback from the Conference Organising Committee by February 2nd, 2018. The authors of successful abstracts will then be invited to submit their full papers for review by May 4th, 2018. Full papers will be double-blind peer reviewed, and returned to their authors for revision before June 8th, 2018. Papers that are accepted, or accepted pending revision, will have until July 30th 2018, for completion. The full accepted, corrected papers will be published online in time for the conference. It is anticipated that a selection of these papers will be published in an edited book or special issue of a journal. More details on this will be available on the conference website when they come to hand. *Please send titles, abstracts, with nominated theme(s) and a separate short author bio in a word file to **Robert.Crocker(a)unisa.edu.au* <Robert.Crocker(a)unisa.edu.au>* no later than December 15th, 2017.* Robert Crocker, D.Phil (oxon) Deputy Director, China Australia Centre for Sustainable Urban Development Art, Architecture and Design University of South Australia GPO Box 2471, Adelaide South Australia 5001 Australia Phone: +61-8-83020206 <+61%208%208302%200206> Staff Homepage: http://people.unisa.edu.au/Robert.Crocker China Australia Centre for Sustainable Urban Development: https://www.unisa.edu.au/Research/China-Australia-Centre- for-Sustainable-Urban-Development/ Robert’s Linkedin page: https://www.linkedin.com/in/robertwbcrocker Author of *Somebody else’s problem: Consumerism, Sustainability and Design *(Greenleaf/Routledge) Axiom Best Business Book Awards, Sustainability: Gold 2017 Winner, and 3rd prize, ISWA publication awards, 2017: https://www.routledge.com/Somebody-Elses-Problem-Consumerism -Sustainability-and-Design/Crocker/p/book/9781783534913 -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
