This bill is a direct attack on freedom of information, and thus undermines democracy and fundamental rights. German MPs must refuse to yield on values that they would defend for their own country just as well as foreign surveillance is concerned. Fundamental rights cannot simply be accommodated whenever convenient.* La Quadrature du Net seizes the opportunity to remind that attacks on the rights of journalists, which are indeed intolerable, must not distract from massive infringement on the fundamental rights of the whole of the population, as entailed in the various surveillance laws passed in the recent years across European Union Member-States and which, far too often, are in contradiction with the principles of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. Similarly, foreign surveillance laws should serve as warnings on conditions by which intelligence, individually targeted or wide-ranging, is being shared between European Member-States and third parties, as well as on agreements to share or access interception systems : usually downright absent from the laws on foreign intelligence (in France or elsewhere), these provisions constitute a grave danger of collateral surveillance being carried out in the greatest opacity and with no avenue of appeal. *Sign the petition <https://www.reporter-ohne-grenzen.de/mitmachen/petition-bnd-en/> to prevent foreign journalists from German intelligence spying* About La Quadrature du Net La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet. More specifically, it advocates for the adaptation of French and European legislations to respect the founding principles of the Internet, most notably the free circulation of knowledge. >In addition to its advocacy work, the group also aims to foster a better understanding of legislative processes among citizens. Through specific and pertinent information and tools, La Quadrature du Net hopes to encourage citizens' participation in the public debate on rights and freedoms in the digital age. Submitted by: Hazel Henderson <http://www.csrwire.com/blog/bloggers/23-hazel-henderson/posts> Posted: Aug 12, 2016 – 06:00 AM EST Tags: artificial intelligence <http://www.csrwire.com/blog/posts/tag/artificial%20intelligence>, ai <http://www.csrwire.com/blog/posts/tag/ai>, economy <http://www.csrwire.com/blog/posts/tag/economy>, algorithm <http://www.csrwire.com/blog/posts/tag/algorithm> [image: Hazelhenderson] Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged in the public debate with Deep Mind’s recent win over a champion of the Chinese game GO. AI is all about computers getting better at solving problems formerly thought too difficult which should be left to humans. Since the 1970s, a small group of computer specialists and mathematicians based their hopes on teaching machines to follow the rule-based learning of human reasoning. They designed algorithms (coding these rules into software programs) which they hoped would enable computers to emulate human thought processes. Today, these algorithms run more and more of our everyday lives. They can decide whether our credit score is good, if we get hired for a job, whether we can board an airplane or get admitted to the country of our destination. Algorithms dominate the world’s stock exchanges, evaluating most companies and deciding whether to buy or sell, as well as causing “flash crashes”. Political campaigns are based on algorithms deciding which voters will turn out and which candidates they’ll favor. The much vaunted Internet of Things (IoT) uses algorithms to monitor our babies, open our locks, control our use of energy, steer our cars and oversee our fitness programs and diets. Algorithms control which ads we see online, monitor our buying habits and track our whereabouts by GPS and our smartphones. Increasingly, algorithms program drones and weapons systems. This brave new world of algorithms and big data has taken over the economies of most post-industrial societies and the lives of their citizens. Most relish the new connectivity, social media and instant, always-on lifestyles – happily surrendering their most personal information and privacy. Few asked about the assumptions and biases that those human programmers may have installed in all these algorithms. New evidence is coming to light as to how these human biases unconsciously held by most people can skew algorithms, including gender and racial biases that affect job selection. In *New Scientist* (July 16, 2016), Aviva Rutkin describes how algorithms with such hidden assumptions have denied people credit, jobs and even parole, and hails the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) recently approved by the European Parliament. This GDPR calls for companies to prevent such discrimination, which filters through algorithms and is hidden in the guise of mathematical impartiality. Rutkin also cites the US White House symposium on AI which explored such issues and how Silicon Valley programmers and technocrats can arbitrarily dictate policies affecting the lives of citizens. An egregious example of a faulty algorithm was exposed by a team of Swedish scientists in *The Economist* (July 16, 2016) who discovered that 40,000 brain research studies based on using functional MRI scans of brains were invalid due to misinterpretation of blood flow patterns assumed in the algorithms they applied. Another is the business-as-usual assumptions in the International Energy Agency’s forecasts failing to track the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Debates about AI, robots, job losses and the privacy and security issues have surfaced in many countries, including who owns all this personal data being patterned into algorithms by spy agencies, social media companies, advertisers, marketers, insurance and banking firms, law enforcement. All this data is valuable and vital to our information-based economies. Microsoft’s former chief scientist, Jaron Lanier, in *Who Owns the Future* (2012), claims that Google, Facebook, Amazon, LinkedIn, Snapchat, Instagram should pay every user for each and every bit of their personal information. Lanier notes their business models sell this data to advertisers, insurers, bankers, political campaigns, so each user should receive payment for their data – quite feasible with existing software. The public is awakening to this new threat of big data as “Big Brother” while acknowledging all its potential benefits. We do not need many of the idiocies promoted for profit in the Internet of Things. For example, the Parks Associates survey found that 47% of US broadband households have privacy or security concerns about smart home devices. Tom Kerber, Director of Research, cites recent media reports of hacking into baby monitors and connected cars and suggests that if firms offered a bill of rights to consumers, this might ease concerns. At least, a standard for all smart devices should allow users to switch off their connectivity and operate them manually. Oxford University’s Future of Humanity Institute’s paper by Deep Mind’s founder Demis Hassabis advocates such “off switches” for AI systems (*The Economist*, June 25, 2016). How would such safeguards work in electronic finance? We as consumers also need greater access to monitor all the assumptions in algorithms that run our lives. New Cities Foundation Greg Lindsay reports in Smart Homes and the Internet of Things <https://issuu.com/atlanticcouncil/docs/smart_homes_0317_web/1?e=23027907/34…> that 66% of smart phone users are afraid of these devices tracking their movements. The Atlantic Council’s March 2016 seminar on “Smart Homes and Cybersecurity” concluded it’s already too late to protect homeowners and other users. Google founder Larry Page is pouring billions into developing flying cars (“Propeller Heads”, *Businessweek*, June 6, 2016). Is this what the public wants? Automotive engineer Mary Louise Cummings of Duke University testified at a recent Senate hearing on driverless vehicles at which Google, General Motors and Ford were requesting over $3 billion in subsidies. She noted that these companies had done no real testing of driverless vehicles and doubted they could be both autonomous and safe. What would flying cars and drones for the 1% do to our already crowded skies and quality of life for the 99%? All this is why Ethical Markets proposes a new standard to shift the balance of power back to consumers and citizens: a new Information Habeas Corpus. Britain in 1215 adopted the rule of Habeas Corpus, which assured individuals’ rights over their own bodies, further codified by Parliament in 1679. Today, we need to extend this basic human right to our brains and all the information we generate in all our activities. Time for the Information Habeas Corpus! Automation
by Anna Harris 12 Aug '16

12 Aug '16

Interesting article by Dmytri Kleiner "it’s not the unskilled, menial jobs Capitalism automates, but usually the skilled ones." CAPITAL DOESN’T AUTOMATE, IT ENTANGLES. During Nick Dyer-Witheford’s presentation at #PlatPol11 the issue of Capital replacing Labour in production entered the conversation and persisted throughout the informal discussions. Would Capitalism automate itself out of existence? Probably not. As Nick noted, it’s not the unskilled, menial jobs Capitalism automates, but usually the skilled ones. Rather than a future characterized by gleaming fully automated robot factories producing untold wealth while humans enjoy a life of leisure and pursuit of higher consciousness, a more realistic vision of capitalist automation is the panicked teenager frantically responding to various beeps and buzzers and flashing lights in the kitchen of a fast-food restaurant. Up until the 50s only short-order cooks made simple, fast-cooked meals and snacks, and the booming diner industry of the era employed many of them. An in-demand occupation, good short-order cooks could be hard to come by, and needed to be paid relatively well. Insta-Burger King, established in 1953 by Matthew Burns and Keith J. Kramer in Jacksonville, Florida developed a way to sell burgers cheaper, by eliminating skilled short-order cooks, replacing them with unskilled labour through the use of their “Insta-Broiler.” Carl N. Karcher, founder of Carl’s Jr, followed suit, replacing his cooks with unskilled kitchen workers and automated kitchen equipment. This is not limited to the Fast Food industry, from call centers, to airports, from hospitals to factories, “Deskilling” has replaced skilled labor by the introduction of technologies operated by semiskilled or unskilled workers. Labour continues to be at the heart of the value creation proces, it just becomes more and more embodied in an authoritarian, monitoring and directing, automated Capital super-structure. It is not “Labour” that Capital is replacing, but rather “Human Capital.” As Wikipedia describes it “That stock of competences, knowledge and personality attributes embodied in the ability to perform labor so as to produce economic value.” So rather than automation, perhaps it makes more sense to understand this process as the Dehumanization of Capital, the embedding of human skill into equipment, and the embedding of human labour into automation. The technologies that are employed in deskilled production are of course themselves produced, and their design involves increasingly complex engineering that employs highly-skilled workers. Skilled labour is not so much replaced, but rather displaced. Moved away from the direct production of consumer goods, to the indirect production of capital goods. This also has a depoliticizing effect. The bargaining power of the masses of deskilled labour is greatly reduced, since they are more replaceable. While the skilled technologists that design the software are increasingly separated from the location of direct production, where surlus-value is created, and thus are abstracted from the appropriation of surplus value. Technologists, often do not see themselves as exploited labour. Since they do not directly toil in the production of consumer goods or services, they often feel enabled, not exploited by capital. They produce ideas, designs, maybe prototypes, but never final products for sale. The Capitalists allow them to realize their technical visions, they don’t directly take anything from them. At #PlatPol11, during Chris Chesher’s talk he presented a Robot waitress that was being marketed at a Korean trade show. It was noted that waitresses are minimum wage labourers, and therefore it was highly unlikely that such a product would be widely used, since it would be much more expensive to maintain a crew of Robot waitresses, then human ones. While the Technology industry may like to show off such novelties like robot pets and servants, Chris noted that the real money and development was in Military robots, designed to kill. Capitalism will not automate itself out of existence. It will not eliminate the workforce, and it will not even try. What it will do is create a deskilled workforce, ever more dependent on capital for the ability to produce, and create a divided workforce, that does not share a common proletarian consciousness, thus diffusing its class power. And, for when and where discontent does bubble up, it will automate the deadly force required to repress uprisings. The brutal Enforcement Droid is much more viable than the pleasant robot servant. A system that directs production towards the creation of exchange value has many motivations to create control, since capture of scarce resources is at the heart of the formation of exchange value, however, it has no motivation to create general abundance. Only a workers society, where people produced and shared as equals would be interested in achieving abundance, since more wealth and less work would be enjoyed by all. Capital doesn’t automate, it entangles. Its technological apparatus does not free labour, it encloses, envelopes human life and labour within it – invading, harassing and extracting. The tremendous wealth-producing power of technology can only truly reduce toil when the wage system is abolished, and when classes are eliminated. Only then could the inovation and determination of people be genuinely applied to using technology to reduce work and increase leisure, until then it is only a sci-fi mirage.

Re: [P2P-F] [NetworkedLabour] who is for and who is against basic income
by Michel Bauwens 12 Aug '16

hi Dmytri, obviously I use another logic my logic is some of the people who advance UBI have a neoliberal agenda (including the neoliberal left as suggested by TD) that doesn't prove that most of the UBI tradition and proponents have that agenda (that is in my view, certainly disproven) now of course I am very interested in a bibliography that proves that some of the neoliberals who support UBI are involved in a plot, and I hope you can provide it, it would be very interesting for us all but that would of course not prove your claim, your claim to be true would have to prove that other propositions for a UBI do not exist, and a knowledge of the future that the majority of proponents would loose out in any conflict this is also a prediction that you know in advance how the social struggle (or class struggle) would end, and in way that is discontinuous with the history of social advances in the past (where social advances where the result of long struggles, massive mobilizations, compromises, and the self-preservation logics of capital) I'm not arguing of course that these advances were unilateral victories, I am only arguing that they were not total victories and plots for capital you have a lot more to prove in that text, for example that a basic income is incompatible with a basic outcome ... I don't mind speculation at all, but when speculation is couched in the language of absolute certainty, then it requires a lot of proof .. as they say, extraordinary proof requires extraordinary evidence but I welcome very much the documentation on the neoliberal side of the debate, Michel On Wed, Aug 10, 2016 at 8:19 PM, Dmytri Kleiner <dk(a)trick.ca> wrote: > On , Michel Bauwens wrote: > >> the polls suggest that the idea that the UBI is a neoliberal plot is >> empirically false, >> >> at the most you could say that some of the proposals of UBI may come >> from neoliberal circles as well >> > > It is empirically certain that UBI is a neoliberal plot, we have the > documents to prove it. > > Please try to understand that the fact that other people also support UBI, > who are not part of this plot, is not proof against. > > Logic! you are claiming that UBI is a neoliberal plot, I am claiming that UBI has a long and varied history that includes neoliberal positions my claim can be proved simply by showing the diversity of UBI forces and propositions your claim can only be proven by ignoring the richness of UBI forces so this is very significant, since it undermines your claim so your claim is not proven, and in fact, can't be proven if you would abandon this extreme claim, which would require extraordinary evidence you don't have, then we could have a more mature decision of what positions and aspects of UBI are dangerous for emancipantory politics, but your extreme positioning derails such debate, here, you want to stop the debate altogether and eliminate evidence, it is fine for me, don't consider yourself personally address by any evidence contrary to your point of view, and all is fine as far as I'm concerned, Michel On Wed, Aug 10, 2016 at 10:11 PM, Dmytri Kleiner <dk(a)trick.ca> wrote: > > Please stop derailing the discussion with this ridiculous strawman. Fwd: [NetworkedLabour] New Politics Workshop Report
by Michel Bauwens 12 Aug '16

12 Aug '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Daniel Chavez <chavez(a)tni.org> Date: Fri, Aug 12, 2016 at 3:33 AM Subject: [NetworkedLabour] New Politics Workshop Report To: networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org Dear compañerxs, I thought some of you might be interested in this workshop report: www.tni.org/files/publication-downloads/new_politics_workshop_report-1.pdf On 13-14 February 2016, a group of researchers and activists from fifteen countries met in Amsterdam. The aim was to jointly draft the research agenda of the New Politics Project, an initiative promoted by the Transnational Institute (TNI) in partnership with several other organisations and individuals from around the world. The participants came from social movements, trade unions, political parties, universities, governments, public entities and research centres in Europe, the Americas, Africa and Asia. The New Politics Project has been conceived as a 'decentralised think tank' on counter-hegemonic politics and economics that will support the joint production of ideas to: (a) boost the development of desirable, viable and achievable alternatives aimed at transcending capitalism; (b) acknowledge the diversity of knowledge as a source of inspiration for the co-creation of alternatives; and (c) promote fruitful collaboration and exchanges among researchers and activists from different regions of the world. The participants came from all the 'ideological families' of the left. Several participants in this list were engaged in the previous phase of the New Politics Project (jointly coordinated by Hilary Wainwright and myself), or had some contact with us. At the Amsterdam workshop we addressed issues that have generated debates within this list, such as the state and the commons, the current meaning(s) of labour, the new forms of social and political activism, the experiences of the left in government, etc. The report offers highlights from the discussions and presentations and underlines key questions and issues to be addressed by the project’s research agenda. There will be a second report with a summary of the agreed workplan. Comments, criticisms and suggestions are welcome. Cheers, Daniel _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Project Syndicate, brings genuine social neo-liberals on one page, who are struggling against neo-conservative neo-liberal elite; over the grand-strategy to coop with China, fascism, and post-capitalism. In Skyfall, 2012 James Bond film, 007 was fighting this international global criminal conspiracy group called Syndicate. and this is Naomi Wolf's response to Bond movie, on be half of Project Syndicate: https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/james-bond-at-50-by-naomi-wolf… In relation to Daniel Chavez's critic of my and Dmytri's mechanic thinking: https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/building-a-progressive-interna… Orsan
