Fwd: [Commons Transition] Feminist Socialism and the Commons

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Stacco Troncoso (Loomio) <notifications(a)loomio.org> Date: Fri, Jun 10, 2016 at 12:49 AM Subject: [Commons Transition] Feminist Socialism and the Commons To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Stacco Troncoso started a discussion in Commons Transition: *Feminist Socialism and the Commons <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/Ae9dfpwLOXmKD46DgJYEW2yftJG9YzR4/click…>* Article: *Feminist Socialism and the Commons <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/Ae9dfpwLOXmKD46DgJYEW2yftJG9YzR4/click…>* by Hilary Wainwright. >From the intro: Hilary Wainwright, of the Transnational Institute and co-editor of Red Pepper magazine, made a lasting impression on the Commons Transition/P2P Foundation team with her panel presentation at the recent Commons Collaborative Economies event in Barcelona. During her presentation, Wainwright shared her insights on the hidden commons of care. “Women have been creating a Commons for a long time: the domestic labor and economy is, de facto, an invisible economy”. She argues that to integrate feminism we need to overcome the gender-based division of labor in the domestic economy, and to make that Commons visible. “It’s a bit strange that the Commons and P2P movements are male dominated. I think it is because this gendered commons, the economy of domestic labor, is completely hidden in the Commons and P2P movements, as in society in general”. She offers that there’s something else to learn from the women’s movement; that the sharing of knowledge or information is not just the sharing of data. “It’s the sharing of understanding, of knowledge that’s embedded in emotion, or even gossip; all those things that are not treated as relevant to knowledge”. With this in mind, when we read following article, (originally published in Jacobin Magazine under the title “Why I Became a Feminist Socialist”), we were struck at how many of the observations and criticisms she derived from her experience during the late sixties — and beyond — are relevant to the P2P Commons movement. We consulted with Hilary Wainwright and have agreed on republishing the article here (albeit with a different title) to nourish this much-needed debate on the invisible economy, affective labor, and the Commons. — Reply to this email directly or view it on www.loomio.org <https://www.loomio.org/ahoy/messages/Ae9dfpwLOXmKD46DgJYEW2yftJG9YzR4/click…>. commoners reaction to EU 'sharing' regulations
by Michel Bauwens 08 Jun '16

via Mayo Fuster: Reactions to the European agenda on collaborative economy <http://ec.europa.eu/growth/single-market/strategy/collaborative-economy/ind…>: "From the corporate collaborative economy to platform cooperativism" - Debate on 9th June, 18:30h Barcelona & online. The European Commission presented on 2nd June the European agenda of collaborative economy <http://ec.europa.eu/growth/single-market/strategy/collaborative-economy/ind…>, which establishes guidelines for Member States on how they should regulate and what should be the collaborative economy policy. >From Procomuns.net - space for the promotion of commons collaborative economy - we would like to initiate a debate. Procomuns started as an event that brought together 400 people linked to experiences of collaborative economy in March 2016, in Barcelona, with the aim of defining public policies for commons collaborative economy. Unfortunately, the European agenda does not refer to the commons collaborative economy model. It mainly adopts the "unicorn" model as a reference of large corporations like Uber and Airbnb, without distinguishing models and without considering other kind like small businesses, free/libre technology and / or licenses that encourage open knowledge, like the digital commons model or platform cooperativism. They are different economic models for their formats and their impacts, and they require a different regulatory approach. Moreover, the agenda does not pay enough attention to the dilemmas and the needs for protecting citizens producers and workers. It is positive that the Commission emphasizes the qualities of collaborative economy on environmental impacts; but is not considering that, apart from the impact on the natural environment, the collaborative economy mainly takes place on the Internet, so it is important to also keep in mind the impact of different models on the internet sustainability as we know it today. Models based on open protocols, open data and open source are more beneficials to Internet preservation itself, and also through data availability, favor impact assessment and collaborative economy management by citizens and administrations. Finally, since important changes are taking place nowadays -especially in cities- but many effects of the collaborative economy are still unknown, we believe that the European Commission should aim at the role of governments to preserve the general interest, enhancing models that could better give answer to social challenges, and keep informed and consult citizens. In this context we would like to draw attention to the Procomuns Commons Declaration <http://procomuns.net/en/policy/> with public policy recommendations for administrations for a Commons-oriented collaborative economy, and we would like to invite you to the event that will take place on Thursday 9th June at 18: 30h in Barcelona (CCCB) and through streaming under the title “From the corporate sharing economy to platform cooperativism", with the participation of Trebor Scholz presenting and discussing his book on platform cooperativism and Mayo Fuster about collaborative economy public policies. the pope on youth unemployment
by Michel Bauwens 07 Jun '16

07 Jun '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Marie Venner <mvenner(a)vennerconsulting.com> Date: Wed, Jun 8, 2016 at 3:01 AM The Permanent Observer to the United Nations in Geneva, Mgr. Jurkovič, has revealed that too many young people remain jobless and things have still not picked up since the start of the economic crisis. A capacity for innovation is crucial if there is to be a transition from a speculative economy to a social economy that places the human person, their qualities and education at the centre. Technology should also be used to serve man, while working hours and salaries must respect criteria of equality and justice. Environmental disasters are also harming jobs [image: http://www.lastampa.it/rf/image_lowres/Pub/p4/2016/06/03/VaticanInsider/Fot…] The Vatican raises the alarm about the high rate of unemployment worldwide. [image: http://www.lastampa.it/modulo/gigya/img/facebook.png]*12* [image: http://www.lastampa.it/modulo/gigya/img/twitter.png] [image: http://www.lastampa.it/modulo/gigya/img/googleplus.png] [image: http://www.lastampa.it/modulo/gigya/img/linkedin.png]*0* 03/06/2016 *FRANCESCO PELOSO* VATICAN CITY “The information contained in the reports and analyses of this Organization regarding the inability to create a sufficient number of dignified and stable jobs is a cause of serious concern.” The international community must therefore do more to create new jobs and boost employment, especially among the young. The Permanent Observer to the United Nations in Geneva, Mgr. Ivan Jurkovič expressed this concern, addressing the 105th session of the International Labour Conference organised by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), which has been taking place over the past couple of days. The Holy See representative was particularly keen to raise “the pressing issue of youth unemployment. Despite a mild recovery in the 2012-2014 period, the youth unemployment rate remains well above its pre-crisis level. For millions of young people around the world finding a decent job is still a lengthy hard struggle. As Pope Francis reminds us, ‘we cannot resign ourselves to losing a whole generation of young people who don’t have the strong dignity of work’.” Mgr. Jurkovič was referring to a speech the Pope gave during his visit to the Italian dioceses of Campobasso and Isernia in July 2014, where he honed in on the issue of youth unemployment. On that occasion, the Pope stated amongst other things: “It is sad to find “neither-nor” young people. What does it mean, this “neither-nor”? They neither study because they cannot, they do not have the means, nor work. And this is the challenge that all of us in the community must defy. We must go forward to defy this challenge! We cannot resign ourselves to losing a whole generation of young people who do not have the powerful dignity of work! Work gives us dignity, and all of us need to do everything possible so as not to lose a generation of young people.” “A generation without work,” Francis added, “is a loss for their homeland and for future humanity. We must fight against this. And help one another to find a way of solution, of aid, of solidarity. Young people are courageous, I have said this, the young have hope and — third — the young have the capacity for solidarity. And this word solidarity is a word that the world today does not like to hear. Some people think that it is a bad word. No, it is not a bad word, it is a Christian word: go forward with your brother and sister to help them overcome problems. Courageous, with hope and with solidarity.” Taking Francis’ magisterium as the starting point, the Apostolic Nuncio to the United Nations in Geneva asked the international community to set itself the goal of creating a substantial number of jobs based on the principle of subsidiarity, ensuring a recovery “that allows each individual and each business to be the protagonist of the development of society as a whole”; this is a moral duty, Mgr. Jurkovič added. Naturally, in order to achieve goal like this, certain choices need to be made. Amongst these, the Holy See mentioned the development of economic models that are more inclusive and not aimed at serving the interests of a few but the ensuring the good of ordinary people and society as a whole. The idea is to move away from a speculative economy and towards a social economy that “invests in persons by creating jobs and providing training”. As such, alternative solutions that make it possible to link economic growth to wellbeing and employment need to be found. Technology itself needs to be placed “at the service of the common good” which “includes decent work for everyone”. This is why we urgently need to leave a purely consumerist mentality behind as human beings end up being “considered as consumer goods, which can be used and thrown away”. Work on the contrary needs to be decent, sustainable for workers, employers, governments, communities and the environment. Jurkovič also talked about globalisation of the economy which led to the spread of supranational production and distribution systems which, however, risk harming salaries and working hours – creating an imbalance in the employer-employee relationship – just for the sake of beating competition. In such a system, working hours and salaries become the two variables producers use as leverage to stay in the market. This often means lower salaries and longer working hours. Hence, salaries must not be “left solely to the whim of the market, but must be influenced by justice and equity”. Finally, the Holy See representative touched on the issue of climate change and “the negative impacts on economic and social development in general and on enterprises and workers” as many businesses and workplaces are left devastated by natural disasters, with a consequent reduction in the possibility of having an income. A request by Fabio Balli: *Do you know an academic course on Open Collaboration / Open Standards ?* As part of my Individualized PhD program (www.fabioballi.net/en/phd) I am looking for an advanced course on Open Collaboration / Commons. This has to be a credited university course but it could take place in any country, be on- or offline and in English, French, German, Italian or Spanish. Goal is for me to get a deeper understanding of Open Collaboration / Commons / Crowdsourcing literature and practices, and nurture the creation of an open standard for health games (www.breathinggames.net/en) Thanks for your support. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

European Commission in panic over new Brexit poll.
by Michel Bauwens 06 Jun '16

06 Jun '16

via christopher quigley In 17 days time, on the 23rd. of June, Britain goes to the polls to decide whether to stay in the European Union or not. Should Great Britain opt to leave it will send financial and political shock waves around the world. Many believe a win for the leave faction would put Europe’s stressed banking system under such pressure that a “Lehman Brothers type event” could occur, the main candidate being Deutsche Bank with its 75 trillion derivative exposure. Thus June 2016 could turn out to be one of the most volatile trading months in financial history. Last week the Guardian Newspaper in London reported that for the first time the leave campaign had moved into the lead in a “poll of polls”. This news sent the European Commission into a blind panic and a secret meeting was called at the highest level to set in place plans to deal with England’s potential exit. Up until now the Commission refused to admit it had any such strategy in place, as they believed such a “statement” would add credibility to the leave camp. This is what Daniel Boffey of the Observer had to say this Sunday: Opinium survey suggests remain camp has lost four points in two weeks, as Boris Johnson (Mayor of London) prepares to campaign on immigration and security. The leave campaign has picked up momentum and taken a three-point lead over remain in the latest Observer/Opinium poll on the EU referendum. The Brexiters now stand on 43%, while 40% say they support the campaign to keep the UK in the union. The potential in the leave campaign’s strategy is reflected in responses suggesting that two in five voters (41%) cite immigration as one of their two most important issues when deciding how to vote. Just over a third (35%) cite Britain’s ability to make its own laws without EU interference and 29% cite the impact of leaving on the UK economy. Half of the 2,007 people surveyed said they believed immigration would be under better control if the UK did leave the EU. Twelve percent felt the UK would have more control if the country retained its EU membership, and 24% said there would be little difference. Johnson is expected to launch a campaign to highlight the security dangers of EU membership, including the possibility of Turkey’s accession to the EU, this weekend. However, the leave campaign also believes that, if it can keep the headline polls close, a relatively poor turnout among Labour voters who support remain could deliver it victory. The findings came as Johnson, who has been posing increasingly as a prime minister in waiting, told the Observer that he believed no genuine “liberal internationalist” could support the EU. The former mayor of London joined forces with Gove, the justice secretary, to suggest that a vote for Brexit could deliver improved social justice. He added: “The impact of EU-enforced uncontrolled immigration to the UK – made worse by the euro crisis – has been to depress the wages of the low-paid, while fat cat FTSE-100 chiefs have seen their pay packets soar to 150 times the average pay of their workforce. It is time that liberals everywhere saw the EU for what it is: essentially a stitch-up between the very biggest corporations, their lobbyists and the commission to frame regulation in such a way as to keep out the competition, especially … from start-ups and innovators.” The poll by Opinium also issued a different set of figures using an alternative methodology to try to reflect the fact that online samples are sometimes seen to over-represent socially conservative respondents, who may be more likely to favour Brexit. With the adjustments to the make-up of the sample surveyed, remain keeps its lead. Opinium found that 43% of UK adults said they would vote to remain in the EU in a referendum, while 41% would vote to leave the EU and 14% don’t know how they would vote. Generally the polls show an electorate split by social class, region and party political affiliation. The more affluent favour staying in the EU, while older people are typically more likely to back Brexit. London is a stronghold of the remain camp, while the East Midlands tends toward leaving. Areas such as north-west England are more evenly poised. Nearly half (48%) say Cameron should resign if Brexit occurs, 32% that he should not.
