The paper focuses on neoliberalization as it is instantiated through audit and ranking systems designed to produce academia as a space of economic efficiency and intensifying competition. We suggest that powerful forms of competition and ranking of academic performance have been developed in Northern Europe. These systems are differentiated and differentiating, and they serve to both index and facilitate the neoliberalization of the academy. Moreover, these audit and ranking systems produce an ongoing sense of anxiety among academic workers. We argue that neoliberalism in the academy is part of a wider system of anxiety production arising as part of the so-called "soft governance" of everything, including life itself, in contemporary late liberalism.* -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: The World Post COP - System Reboot Not Plug-and-play
by Michel Bauwens 04 Jan '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jules Peck <jules.peck(a)jerichochambers.com> Date: Mon, Jan 4, 2016 at 1:50 PM Subject: The World Post COP - System Reboot Not Plug-and-play To: jules peck <jules(a)flourishingenterprise.org>, Jules Peck < jules.peck(a)jerichochambers.com> Happy new year all - I thought you might be interested in my new year thoughts on the 2016 landscape post COP21 and the SDG process. If you like the blogs please tweet and share at http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jules-peck/the-world-post-cop-system_b_882794… and http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jules-peck/the-world-post-cop-system_1_b_8836… *The World Post COP - System Reboot Not Plug-and-play* The* SDGs and COP21 raise more questions than they answer - 2016 will need to shift the debate to wider system change. This two-part blog explores these issues.* [image: Inline image 1] *The current policy landscape* *"Woo mercy, mercy me, mercy fatherAh things ain't what they used to be, no noOil wasted on the ocean and upon our seas* *Fish full of mercury*" I was struck by the poignancy of Marvin Gaye's 1971 poetry as I listened to broadway star and member of Hip Hop Hope for Divestment Antonique Smith singing <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BgJE0C-ilw> Mercy, mercy me at an event at COP21 ten days ago. The lyrics reminds us just how long it has taken us to wake up to the need for an end to the fossil-fool age and how, though 2015 was a good year in some ways, in others we have only just begun the real journey. 2015 saw at least three seismic shifts in the sustainable development world. For starters in September the Sustainable Development Goals <http://www.undp.org/content/undp/en/home/mdgoverview/post-2015-development-…> were adopted by governments, setting a new developmental pathway towards 2030. Next, by November over $3.4 trn of assets had committed to divest <http://divestinvest.org/> out of fossil-fuels and invest in a new economy, supported by a diversity of voices Sent from my iPad In principle COP21 has moved things on. At least the 'what' of the IPCC process, the shape of things to come, is now clearer. It rhetorically sets collective sights on 1.5 degrees, we can be sure that governments will be held to their INDCs by civil society, and $100bn of new money has in principle been committed to deliver on the agreement. But many questions remain on the 'how' to achieve this. The COP outcome is still voluntary <https://globalclimatejobs.wordpress.com/2015/11/09/world-pledges-to-increas…>, its not negotiated with wider society, the INDCs arguably currently could lock us into at least 3degrees, the agreement's mechanisms are weighted to 'market solutions' like trading rather than other solutions civil society favours and there is precious little clarity on where the $100bn will actually come from and in what form. Perhaps that's partly where the divestment movement comes in. As the divestment movement starts to shift its campaigning to focus on the 'invest' piece in 2016, it has already become clear even to the head of the coal industry lobby <http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/dec/15/coal-lobby-boss-says-ind…>, that the fossil-fool economy is dying and that perhaps the world's carbon traders are becoming the new slave traders. But despite $trillions committing to some form of divestment, the DivestInvest movement has a long way to go to plug the investment gap and to integrate a wider equity and justice frame to its work. The disjunction between the SDG narrative and Paris is stark, with COP21 failing to integrate key social issues into the text or sentiment of the talks despite these being central to the SDG vision. The framing of a Just Transition <http://www.resilience.org/stories/2015-10-30/just-transition-with-mateo-nub…> to a new economy was largely lost over the two weeks of haggling in Paris. Likewise fundamental pillars of sustainable development such as Climate Justice <http://newint.org/features/web-exclusive/2015/12/12/cop21-paris-deal-epi-fa…> and equity <http://www.skepticalscience.com/TRTTDEquity.html> were sidestepped as too uncomfortable. Issues like consumerism are also largely absent from the SDG and climate agreements and Paris saw no confrontation of prickly questions such as what Professor Kevin Anderson says <http://critical-angle.net/2015/12/11/the-road-to-two-degrees-part-two-are-t…> about the limits to economic growth relating to combating climate change. Ignoring the views of civil society in this way is a mistake. As Naomi Klein said in her COP21 rally speech <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fhYIA7E3JsY>, the true leaders of system change are in the streets not in the negotiating halls. These thorny issues won't go away. The Divestment movement has been emboldened to go further and become more radical post Paris. And, as can be seen from the Too weak, too late <http://oneworld.org/2015/12/12/too-weak-too-late-says-climate-justice-campa…>opinion compendium, the failures of COP to include justice issues hasstrengthened <http://www.theguardian.com/environment/true-north/2015/dec/15/claim-no-easy…> the resolve and momentum of the climate justice movement. *The current landscape -- shifting from 'what' to 'how' post SDGs* Clarity on where we go with the SDGs is also lacking. As SDG advisor Alex Evans says, now that the Open Working Group (OWG) on the post-2015 SDG agenda has reported, "minds are shifting to the 'how' as opposed to the 'what' -- and what a new Global Partnership on development might look like. There is a risk that the soaring ambition of the OWG's Goals will not be matched by adequate action on the delivery side." Many of the answers on how to solve the challenges we face now on climate and the SDGs will need to come from society at large, from social movements, communities and citizens. This calls for a p2p revolution, the end of top-down and the beginning of people-power. The institutions of today can, and indeed must be involved in this revolution. But power needs to disperse and so does the conversation. So delivering on the SDGs will require a host of tough issues to be resolved and delivered on including those same climate finance, loan and developing world support details so missing from Paris. Other key issues which need to be included in delivering on the SDGs include; strong action on tax avoidance and subsidies, stretching private sector ambition and support for SD, recognition of natural resources like land, water, and the atmosphere as a special category of property right, with dividends from their use accruing to society at large, a radical overhaul of the financial system, consideration of a universal basic income and some fundamental questioning of issues such as the growth paradigm, limits of decoupling and the need to shift from consumerism to a world of intrinsic values and wellbeing. This starting list of key SDG delivery issues represent radical changes to the status quo. *This changes everything -- why we need to think 'system reboot not plug and play'* As the post COP party hangovers start to wear off people are recognising the momentous, perhaps paradigm shifting <http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/dec/14/eu-says-15c-global-warmi…>, scale of the challenge facing us as we attempt to deliver on the highest ambitions from Paris. As Richard Heinberg has said <http://www.postcarbon.org/renewable-energy-after-cop21/> post COP, the required transition is "not plug and play, its civilisation reboot". And as Professor John Foran puts it <http://www.resilience.org/stories/2015-12-14/the-paris-agreement-paper-hero…>, "Despite their beautiful words, our leaders remained trapped in a broken system and a crashing worldview." Coming out of Paris IPCC scientist Professor Kevin Anderson has concluded that we have to make: "Fundamental changes to the political and economic framing of contemporary society...let Paris be the catalyst for a new paradigm." The social justice narrative of 'system change not climate change' has now gone mainstream with voices such as UNFCCC Chief Christiana Figueres now calling for 'a new system' at COP21. Delivering on these radical changes will require a sea-change in the process of change. Policy-wonkery and lobbying may play a role but above all what is needed is a new society-wide Big Conversation on paradigm shift and systems change. *The emerging new economy vision* Many of these issues are the staple diet of those involved in the wider 'new/next economy' world which is the focus of the Real Economy Lab <http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jules-peck/making-sense-of-the-new-e_b_721973…> I convene. This new economy space is a vibrant hot-bed of innovation. As Professors Gus Speth and Professor Gar Alperovitz of the Next System Project put it, "just below the surface of media attention literally thousands of grass roots institution changing, wealth-democratizing efforts have been quietly developing." Hundreds of movements, alliances and organizations around the world are experimenting with a new-economy - new ways of living, of making, of commerce and of ownership -- open-coops, social solidarity, Transition Towns, Commoning, Sharing, initiatives from groups like the Club of Rome, Nef's Great Transition, the Next System Project, the New Economy Coalition, Neon, the Just Transition movement of labour, Movement Generation and Edge Funders and many others. But between the current policy landscape and this vision of the future lies an unmapped territory on which we need to start to plot a roadmap to system change. *Where do we go from here?* Very different actors inhabit the worlds of the current policy landscape and this emerging vision of a new system. Some bridge both worlds -- but too few. What is needed is a common vision and narrative and an inclusive conversation we are all part of. I see this as a journey. For a journey to be worth taking you need a roadmap. Right now we have only the slimmest of clarity and agreement on even the shape of the landscape we need to cross let alone where we want to get to. Many of us are too busy looking at our feet, fearful of stumbling, few ever get even a glimpse of a possible horizon let alone the peaks we need to aim for. Those working in the foothills need to be helped to see a vision of where we need to head. Those with their heads poking through the fog need support to keep their feet in reality and real-politic. Above all what will be needed is to take everyone with us on this journey. What that will require a new form of conversation built on deliberative, participative dialogue, open-enquiry and inclusiveness and powered by digital democracy. This dialogue will need to bridge the here and now with a desirable and achievable future which is truly fair and sustainable for people and planet. Whats crucial is that the dialogue of the deaf between so many of us needs to end and we need to find a way to develop one big conversation about system change and transformation. Perhaps our attitude to this journey needs to take a hint from another of Marvin Gaye's songs What Going On. *Picket lines and picket signsDon't punish me with brutalityC'mon talk to meSo you can seeWhat's going on* *All the bestJules PeckFounding PartnerJericho Chambers* *Convenor of the Real Economy Lab www.realeconomylab.org <http://www.realeconomylab.org> * 12a Charterhouse Square London EC1M 6AX *M: 00447920844802 <00447920844802> W: www.jerichochambers.com/ <http://www.jerichochambers.com/> and www.julespeck.co.uk <http://www.julespeck.co.uk/> * T: @citizenjules '*Aspire not to have more but to be more*' Archbishop Oscar Romero Clerk to Jericho Chambers eve.harris(a)jerichochambers.com 00 44 7403 738 097 Jericho Chambers is the trading name of Jericho Chambers LLP, a limited liability partnership registered in England and Wales with partnership number OC385688 and whose registered office is at 35 Piccadilly, London, W1J 0LP -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Why We Consume: Neural Design and Sustainability (GTN Discussion)

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Great Transition Network <gtnetwork(a)greattransition.org> Date: Sat, Jan 2, 2016 at 11:06 PM Subject: Why We Consume: Neural Design and Sustainability (GTN Discussion) To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com >From Paul Raskin <praskin(a)tellus.org> ------------------------------------------------------- GTN Colleagues: The point of departure for our JANUARY DISCUSSION is the new GTI Viewpoint “Why We Consume: Neural Design and Sustainability” by Peter Sterling. Please find it and read it at www.greattransition.org/publication/why-we-consume. A recurrent theme of recent discussions has been the growth imperative of the capitalist system and ways to transcend it. But growth in output would have been a recipe for overproduction and stagnation (“realization crises”) had the demand side of the economic equation not expanded apace. Indeed, Keynes, Schumpeter, and Marx—for different reasons—all believed productivity increases would outpace demand growth, thereby subverting the long-term viability of capitalism. Keynes welcomed that destiny as an opportunity for fashioning a post-scarcity society, Schumpeter rued it as an inevitable segue to some kind of state socialism, and Marx saw deep structural crises as fuel for proletarian revolution. Of course, history has not been kind to these prognoses. Despite episodic stagnation crises, consumer demand kept ballooning, postponing the day of reckoning. What drives this seeming insatiability of wants beyond basic material needs? As a neuroscientist, Peter Sterling draws on contemporary research to diagnose the roots of consumerism in the way the brain works, and to limn lessons for the project of transcending it. Now, a number of you have been looking at the problem of consumerism—and prospects for “sustainable consumption”—through complementary windows of perception, stressing, inter alia, sociological pressures, psychological needs, cultural influences, and economic manipulations. What resonances or dissonances do you see between your own perspective and Sterling’s emphasis on neural design? IN PRAISE OF BREVITY: GTI exchanges benefit enormously from expansive comments, but concise, pointed comments or questions are equally appreciated! Please do not hesitate to weigh in. Comments are welcome through FEBRUARY 2. Friends, 2015 witnessed some hopeful developments for a GT, but also all too many reminders that “we have no time for the tranquilizing drug of gradualism” (Martin Luther King, Jr.). Perhaps our dialogue will ripple out further and faster in the coming year, and enrich the multifarious efforts of this remarkable assemblage. All of us here wish all of you a healthy and meaningful New Year. Looking forward, Paul Raskin GTI Director NOTE ON GTI’S PUBLICATION CYCLE: GTN discussions occur in ODD-NUMBERED months, and GTI publishes in EVEN-NUMBERED months. Each discussion takes up a new essay or viewpoint prior to its publication. After the discussion closes, GTI publishes and distributes the piece, along with comments drawn from the discussion and a response from the author. Fwd: " emotion as a resource akin to guns and money " in Post-Cold War Interventions and Conflicts

" ...* http://web.mit.edu/ssp/research/Civil%20War/Western_Intervention.html *" Within the array of post-Cold War interventions in violent ethnic conflicts, interveners attempt to structure a cooperative “game” among warring groups. At certain junctures, different actors use emotions to change the set of actors, reshape preferences, and alter the rules of this game. Actors have a range of actions available to trigger emotions, including: violence against persons, desecration of religious sites, destruction of property, inflammatory propaganda, and public demonstrations. This project treats emotion as a resource akin to guns and money. In order to explain a pattern of provocations under intervention, social scientists need to develop hypotheses that consider both structural resources and constraints and the distribution of emotions on which political entrepreneurs might play. If we can treat emotions as a resource, we may better understand the patterns, forms, and escalation of violence and thus why interventions often fail even despite a heavy foreign presence. Fwd: Food for a pauper's thought

Since that time, labor laws across the world have become much less union friendly, and unionizing new establishments has become harder. • The wage differentials between skilled and unskilled workers were reduced when unions were active. Not only does de-unionization affect wage inequality, but wage inequality also affects unionization. • Levels of economic inequality in many countries would be lower today if there was no discrimination. • Economic inequalities, especially when extreme, can also be closely linked to social unrest and conflict. • It is clear that the most impoverished suffer the most extreme effects of inequality for a variety of reasons. In part, this is because their influence and capacity to exercise their rights is diminished relatively, even if not absolutely, as others become wealthier and gain greater political and economic power. • Inequality undermines human dignity. Moreover, ultimately, extreme inequality is an assault on democracy. • The deeply expressed concerns about the consequences of inequality are not in fact bringing the sort of structural changes that would be required in the policies of government institutions. For the most part, the response seems to involve the tweaking of traditional policies rather than any change in the fundamental priorities underlying the work of official institutions. • Income distribution should become an economic, social and HR indicator used by international financial institutions and other international organizations. 2. I know this is a lot to digest, but the key truisms about poverty are indeed in this long list. 3. *The agenda Alston proposes is:* • Reject extreme inequality by formally and openly recognizing the fact that there are limits to the degrees of inequality. • Commit to reduce extreme inequality by states formally committing themselves to policies explicitly designed to reduce, if not eliminate, extreme inequality • Make economic, social and cultural rights central by states taking the concept of these rights seriously and giving them the needed prominence and priority equal to that of civil and political rights. • Ensure social protection floors by the State meeting its most basic obligations in relation to the economic, social and cultural rights of its citizens and of others. • Implement fiscal policies that reduce inequality by adopting and enforcing progressive taxation policies that are instrumental to achieving that aim. • Revitalize the equality norm by the right to equality being given greater prominence so that it is able to add substantively to the jurisprudence of international HR bodies in ways that it has thus far not. • Put the questions of resources and their redistribution back into the HR equation by public interest HR civil society organizations overcoming their deep reluctance to bring issues such as resources, national budgets and the need for redistributive policies into their actions and advocacy. 4. If you have followed these Readers for some time, you will know that the action agenda that these CSOs have been advancing are more radical and more bottom-centered than the ones suggested by Alston. Claudio Schuftan, Ho Chi Minh City cschuftan(a)phmovement.org *Postscript/Marginalia* -Some top down ideas must begin at the bottom; then rise like the sun. (J. Koenig) -Both justice and injustice share one thing: the need of authority and sometimes force to be applied. (Albino Gomez) The problem with this line of argument is that it presumes that we have to live with the consequences of tyranny; that there are no circumstances when we must do what is right, not as a strategy, but simply because it is ... right. (Y. Varoufakis) -The globalized economy has no other purpose than to serve the private interest of a very few. Greed that has so much been behind the world’s material, technical and scientific ‘progress’ is pushing us into a cloudy abyss, towards an era without history. It is thus a must to reach a planetary consensus on the needed solidarity towards the oppressed, to mobilize the big economies to create useful goods without frivolousness, goods that will uplift the poorest groups in the world. (President Mujica of Uruguay) -Given the above, optimism these days (in our convoluted world) can only be the result of a lack of information. (A. Fwd: Video : We become targets by exposing ourselves to a war that is not ours ( but that we started )

This expert ( Pierre Conesa ) suggests this is not a western war. He uses the absurd comparison of Arabs who would fight in Ireland to separate Protestants and Catholics. We are exposing ourselves by joining a war ( made up of 4 or more different conflict levels ) we do not understand ( personal comment : except for possibly the interests of western corporations in regards to oil ? And the interest of corporations and centralised power to step up control and military spending ? ) . He explains that even when stepped up, western air interventions are only a small fraction of what Arab Gulf States are investing in military destructive capacity in Yemen, and that these rich states have the resources to fight in Syria too if that would really be their intention. -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

It starts in 2001 when Jim O'Neill, at that time the chairman of the Assets Management division of Goldman Sachs, the giant investment house, wrote a widely-commented article about what we have come to call "emerging economies." O'Neill singled out four countries – Brazil, Russia, India, and China – all of whom were large enough in size and territory to have noticeable weight in the world market. He labeled them the BRICs. O'Neill argued that their assets were growing at such a pace that they were going to overtake collectively the asset values held by the G-7 countries, which had long been the list of the wealthiest countries in the world-system. O'Neill did not say exactly when this would occur – by 2050 at the latest. But he saw the rise of the BRICs as more or less inevitable. Given his position at Goldman Sachs, he was essentially telling the clients of Goldman Sachs to shift significant parts of their investments to these four countries while their assets were still selling cheaply. The argument caught on, including in the four countries themselves. The four BRICs decided to assume the name and create structures of annual meetings as of 2009 in order to transform their emerging economic strength into geopolitical strength. The tone of their successive collective statements was to assert the place of the South against that of the North, and especially that of the United States in the world-system. They talked of replacing the dollar as the reserve currency with a new South-based currency. They talked of creating a South-based development bank to assume many of the functions that were the purview of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. They talked of redirecting world trade flows, so as to enhance South-South exchanges. They talked of all these things, but somehow they never quite got around to implementing these proposals. Instead, they concentrated in the 2010's on enjoying the fruits of a high level of commodity prices, which allowed the governments of the four countries to augment significantly the income levels of their upper and middle strata, and even to increase some benefits to the lower strata. The times seemed good, and not only for the BRICs. In 2009, South Africa managed to convince the four BRICs to admit it as a fifth member of the group. The name was changed from BRICs to BRICS, the final capital S referring to South Africa. South Africa did not really meet the economic criteria O'Neill had specified, but in terms of geopolitics, it enabled the group to say it had an African member. Meanwhile, other countries began to show economic characteristics similar to those of the BRICS. Journalists began to speak of the MINT – Mexico, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Turkey. Although this group also included ‘emerging’ economies, they never became a formal structure. One other country was an obvious member – South Korea. However, South Korea had already been admitted to the club of the wealthy – the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) – and thus saw no need to enhance further its geopolitical status. Then all of a sudden, the economic strength of the BRICS took a turn for the worse in the 2010s. It isn't that the G-7 countries were growing faster again, but that the BRICS were showing lowered asset figures. The swift rise of the BRICS seemed to be vanishing. What had happened? A look at the world-economy of the first decade of the twenty-first century shows that the world economic boom was largely driven by China's no-holds-barred construction and industrialization drive. It had created an enormous demand for inputs of all sorts, which China got from the BRICS countries as well as elsewhere. China's boom had been built on some shaky and reckless loan policies of the large number of regional banks that had come into existence, aided and abetted by considerable corruption. When the Chinese government sought to repair the damage, its growth rate plummeted, although it still remained relatively high. In addition, China's attempt to assert her geopolitical power over its neighbors in east and southeast Asia has led to accumulated tensions. Said to be part of China's rivalry with the United States, both China and the United States have been careful not to let the rivalry go so far that it threatens the longer-run possibilities of a partnership. China's adjustments were immediately felt elsewhere, and especially in the other BRICS countries, which turned out to be economically shaky and therefore politically vulnerable. The dramatic fall of the world oil prices took their toll. One after the other, the BRICS found themselves in trouble, each in its own form. Brazil's economic policies had combined neoliberal macroeconomic policies with important transfers to the poorest third of the population – the so-called *Fome Cero* or Zero Hunger no longer worked. The fluid and ever-changing political alliances in the Brazilian legislature became a turbulent scene, threatening political stability. At the moment, the two main sides are trying to impeach each other's leaders. And the image of the person who had constructed Brazil's previously successful policies – Lula or former President Luis Inácio Cruz de Silva – is badly tarnished. Russia's policies of heavy investment in the military combined with state-aided economic redistribution were strongly threatened by the fall in gas and oil price. Its geopolitical assertiveness in Ukraine and the Middle East led to various kinds of boycotts that hurt its economic national income sharply. India's attempt to catch up, not only with the West but with China, resulted in massive ecological damage as well as the diminution of investments by its diaspora in North America and western Europe. The current government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is finding it very difficult to fulfill the promises that led to his landslide victory so recently. In South Africa, the overwhelming majority of the African National Congress (ANC) is finally receding, as an ever-larger proportion of the electorate is too young to remember the anti-apartheid struggle. Instead, politics have become increasingly based on ethnic politics. And the ANC is threatened by an anti-White upsurge among younger voters, so foreign to the ANC’s historic non-racial policies. In addition, South Africa's neighbors are increasingly uneasy with South Africa's strong hand in their internal politics. Oh, how the mighty have fallen! What remains of the geopolitical aspirations of the BRICS is anyone's guess. -- To view previous posts, create a Google account with your current email and log in using gmail to access the archives. https://accounts.google.com/newaccount?hl=en --- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups " debate-list(a)fahamu.org" group. Fwd: [NetworkedLabour] Aaron Schwarz and Wikileaks

Let's not forget him, ever. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: nettime's anonymous source <nettime(a)kein.org> Date: 2015-12-06 10:27 GMT+01:00 Subject: <nettime> Aaron Schwarz and Wikileaks To: nettime-l(a)mx.kein.org http://www.aaronswartzday.org/jacobappelbaum-2015/ Lisa: Ladies and Gentlemen, Jacob Appelbaum. Jacob: First of all, thank you so very much for having me tonight. It’s actually really difficult that I can’t be there in person, and I wish that I could be. And, when Lisa asked me to speak tonight, I actually didn’t feel that I had something to say until I sat down and wrote a text. So, I’m just going to read you a text, and as a result I’m going to cover my camera because there’s nothing worse than watching someone read. So, as you can see there, it’s just a bright white light, and now I’m going to read you this text, and I hope that you can still hear me. [Crowd chanting “We want Jake!”] Jacob: (Laughing) Lisa Rein: Jacob, come back on camera, please. Don’t do it, Jake. Jacob: I’m sorry. It has to be this way. That’s how it has to be, I’m sorry, but here we go. Lisa: It’s okay. No, no, no! Jacob: You can’t fucking be serious. [laughing] Terrible. Lisa: Jacob, please. Thank you. (Jesus Christ.) Jacob: Look, I want to see all of you, too, but we don’t get what we want so I’m going to read you this text now. The first time that I heard Aaron Swartz speak in person was at the Creative Commons release party in San Francisco. Lisa: Jacob, we’re going to turn it [the podium laptop] around. Jacob: I was working the door as a security guard, if you can believe that. I think it was in December of 2002. Meeting people in that seemingly weird world mutated life in a good way. Over the years, we crossed paths many times, be it discussions relating to CodeCon, to age limits, or free software, or the Creative Commons, or about crypto, or any other topic. Aaron was an insightful, hilarious, and awesome person. Aaron and I worked on a few different overlapping projects and I very much respected him. Some of the topics that came up were light, but some were very heavy and very serious. The topic of WikiLeaks was important to both of us. In November of 2009, long before I was public about my work with WikiLeaks, I introduced Aaron to someone at WikiLeaks who shall remain unnamed. If we had a secure and easy way to communicate, if some sort of communication system had existed that had reduced or eliminated metadata, I probably could’ve done so without a trace. But we didn’t. You’re not the first to know, the FBI and the NSA already know. Less than a year later, Aaron sent me an email that made it clear how he felt. That email in its entirety was straightforward and its lack of encryption was intentional. On July 10, 2010, he wrote, “Just FYI, let me know if there’s anything, ever, I can do to help WikiLeaks.” Did that email cast Aaron as an enemy of the state? Did Aaron worry? 2010 was an extremely rough year. The US government against everyone. The investigation of everyone associated with WikiLeaks stepped up. So many people in Boston were targeted that it was effectively impossible to find a lawyer without a conflict. Everyone was scared. A cold wave passed over everything, and it was followed by hardened hearts from many. In February of 2011, a few of us were at a party in Boston hosted by danah boyd. Aaron and I walked a third person home. A third person who still wishes to remain unknown. The sense of paranoia was overwhelming, but prudent. The overbearing feeling of coming oppression was crushing for all three of us. All of us said that our days were numbered in some sense. Grand juries, looming indictments, threats, political blacklisting. None of us felt free to speak to one another about anything. One of those people, as I said, still wishes to remain unnamed. We walked through the city without crossing certain areas, because Aaron was worried about being near the properties that MIT owned. When Aaron took his life, I remember being told by someone in San Francisco, and I didn’t understand. I literally did not understand who they meant or who it could be. It seemed impossible for me to connect the words that were coming out of their mouth with my memories. Shortly after Aaron was found, WikiLeaks disclosed three facts: - Aaron assisted WikiLeaks. - Aaron communicated with Julian and others during 2010 and 2011. - And Aaron may have even been a source. I do not believe that these issues are unrelated to Aaron’s persecution, and it is clear that the heavy-handed U.S. prosecution pushed Aaron to take his own life. How sad that he was abandoned by so many in his time of need. Is it really the case that there was no link? Is it really the case that the U.S. prosecutors went after Aaron so harshly because of a couple of Python scripts and some PDFs? No, clearly not. I wish that Aaron had lived, as we all do. This was the year that brought us the summer of Snowden, and yet it felt like ten years of grief in a single one. It was the last time I spent any time in the U.S., and even now it feels like a distant memory, mostly bad memories. Especially the memory of learning about Aaron. Only a few months later, in 2013, there was a New Year’s Eve toast with many of us who were being investigated, harassed, and targeted for our work, our associations with WikiLeaks, and for our political beliefs. It was me that stupidly, stupidly said, “We made it.” But I know it was Roger, and I remember it well, when he said, “Not all of us.” And he wasn’t speaking only about Aaron, but him too. And it was heartbreaking to remember, and it was telling of how to cope. How some try to forget, and we do forget, and that it is important to remember. Especially right then and especially right there. Just as it is here, and just as it is right now. When we learned more details about the U.S. prosecutors, we learned that they considered Aaron a dangerous radical for unspecified reasons. One of the primary reasons is probably the Guerilla Open Access Manifesto. This is a good document, and, as many others, I respect it and I admire it. The Guerilla Open Access Manifesto is not as radical as the U.S. prosecutors might consider it. But their fear is telling, so let us say it out loud: We should honor it and we should extend it. Let’s not only liberate the documents of the world, let us act in solidarity to liberate all of humanity. Let us create infrastructure that resists mass surveillance. Let us enable people to leak documents. And let us also work to infiltrate those organizations that betrayed us. There is a division of labor, and we all bring different skills to the table. Let us all use them in service of a better world, in service of justice. We must have total transparency about the investigation into Aaron. Why was the Department of Justice grinding their axe with Aaron? Was it really because of JSTOR and the past anger about PACER? That is absurd and unbelievable. It is disproportionate and it is unjust. One concrete thing that needs to happen is for the FOIA case to be properly resolved. We must find a way to speed up the processing about FOIAs regarding Aaron. Rather than hundreds of documents at a time, we should have all 85,000 at once, and not mediated by MIT, who is partially responsible for the outcome we have today. And we must not drop the pressure. If you are invited to MIT, I encourage you to decline and to explain that you do so because of MIT’s treatment of Aaron Swartz. But not just Aaron, but those like Star Simpson and Bunnie, who MIT would’ve left to be like Aaron, if the cards had played a little differently. Here are some things you can do to support the legacy and spirit of Aaron. We can support the development of some of Aaron’s projects like SecureDrop. Kevin, Garrett, Micah, and others are carrying that torch. We can work with them. They’re still with us today. You can come and work with many people at the Tor Project on Tor Browser and Tor Messenger, and other software to be of use to disseminate and to push out information, important information to people that might have otherwise not happened without that software. And you can come and help us make free software for freedom, just as Aaron did. And there are other projects that need assistance. OnionShare, Let’s Encrypt, GlobalLeaks, Pawn[?], Subgraph, Signal, the Transparency Toolkit, and many more. But it isn’t just software. There are so many things that can be done. You can write to prisoners of conscience of Aaron’s generation, of my generation, of your generation. Do Jeremy Hammond, Barret Brown, and Chelsea Manning have to die before we work to correct the injustices that they face daily? We can and we should free them. Here are some things to support each other during the hard times, those with us now and those sure to come in the future. We should support WikiLeaks, an organization under attack for publishing information in the public interest. We should support the EFF. They support people who are at the edge. We should support the ACLU. When others called Edward Snowden a traitor, the ACLU gave him legal support. We should support the Courage Foundation. They are the ones that helped Edward Snowden to seek and to receive asylum and do the same with others that are directly under threat today and those under threat tomorrow. And we should support the Library Freedom Project. They work to educate, to deploy, and to resist, by deploying alternatives in public spaces for everyone today. And together, we are already building, deploying, supporting, and using infrastructure which is not merely a matter of protest, but is an act of resistance in itself, by being a practical alternative. And there is a legal lesson that we actually must learn in a very hard way, as many communities have learned it already, and it is one where the lawyers in the audience who represent me are already cringing from what I’ve said, but they’ll cringe harder next. We must resist grand juries. We must not bow down. We must band together. And together we can refuse to be isolated. We must resist it every step of the way, never giving them anything, ever, at all, when they wish to persecute us for our political beliefs. And if you feel there is no other choice, drag it out and make it public. Consider that the core of Aaron’s legacy is not simply about information or about writing software. It is about justice, about fairness, through transparency, through accountability, through consideration. So then let us consider our empire and most of all we must consider our complicity. It is up to us to act and to change things, to fight for the user, but also to consider the world in which he lives. To think as technologists, but to think far beyond only the technology and into our common humanity. How is this lesson applied to gender and racial inequality? Aaron wasn’t a bigot; he was thoughtful. He was not a homophobic person; he was accepting. He wasn’t a racist; he was unprejudiced. Aaron was kind and compassionate. He fought for free speech. He worked and he supported your anonymity directly with actions, and he worked to free our culture’s knowledge. We must be forward-thinking, not just about winning one or two battles. Not just about one or two legal cases. Rather in a broader sense, towards a movement of movements. The Internet is a terrain of struggle and it will help shape all of the other terrains of struggles to come, and Aaron, Aaron helped to shape that terrain for us, so that we could shape it for others. Part of what Aaron carried was an understanding that it wasn’t just that something needed to be done. He carried with him the idea that very specific things needed to happen, and for very good reasons, to benefit all of those alive and all of those yet to live. He cared deeply about free software, and he cared deeply about the free culture movement. He worked to advance many other issues. Let us carry on that work, whatever the cost, wherever they may take us. Aaron was headstrong and hilarious. He was young. Today, he would’ve been 29. Use your time wisely. May you have more time than him, and may you use it as wisely as he did.
