Fwd: DailyPaywall.com is Back to Celebrate 15 yrs of Hacking for Socio-Critical Art - Paolo Cirio - Press Release
by Michel Bauwens 15 Jan '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Paolo Cirio <press.paolo.cirio(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Jan 15, 2016 at 11:08 PM Subject: DailyPaywall.com is Back to Celebrate 15 yrs of Hacking for Socio-Critical Art - Paolo Cirio - Press Release To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Press Release. 15th Jan. 2016, London - NYC. To celebrate 15 years of socio-critical Internet art practice, *Paolo Cirio* re-launches *DailyPaywall.com* <http://DailyPaywall.com> with over 60,000 articles from the *Financial Times*, the *Wall Street Journal* and the *Economist* available to all for free! Watch the introductory video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=GodT9TTFswU This conceptual artwork critiques today’s information economy by reconfiguring and embodying the dynamics of the conflict over the control of information’s ownership, labor and sharing. *DailyPaywall.com* <http://DailyPaywall.com> was online for a few days exactly a year ago until a legal threat from Pearson PLC took it down for copyright infringement. The major publishing firm mentioned the violation of five laws in its C&D letter: https://PaoloCirio.net/work/daily-paywall/DailyPaywall.com-PearsonPLC-vs-Ci… <https://paolocirio.net/work/daily-paywall/DailyPaywall.com-PearsonPLC-vs-Ci…> Meanwhile, Pearson sold the *Financial Times* and the *Economist* a few months after this letter. Now, *DailyPaywall.com* <http://DailyPaywall.com> is back on a safe new server, challenging unfair copyright laws once again by claiming fair use of over 60,000 news articles that should belong to the public. The pirated content from all 2014 won’t be indexed by search engines, yet, as in any public library, it’ll be available to students, researchers, journalists, cultural producers, and anyone who can’t afford the subscription fees imposed by those giant publishers, thereby overcoming economic and linguistic barriers to crucial information. *Daily Paywall* was created as a media performance scripted and staged to involve a wide audience into a commentary on today’s information and sharing economy. The paid-to-read model is a creative economic model that engages with alternatives of social systems that needs to be reimagined. At this time, the crowdfunding and payments system won’t be enabled due to a lack of resources that limits the restaging of the online performance. More on *Daily Paywall* media performance: https://PaoloCirio.net/work/daily-paywall <http://paolocirio.net/work/daily-paywall/> * In 15 years of activity in art activism and hacking, Paolo Cirio has always aimed to create meaningful art and address critical social issues. * It was 2001 when he started to edit a large web project against the wave of militarism of the so-called War on Terror, and launching anonymous DDOS attacks against NATO’s website. It signed the beginning of Paolo Cirio's international and independent activity of working with critical information surrounding international social issues and involving the public in creative forms of interventions toward social justice and a critique of information society. * 2015 has been a great year with over 25 exhibitions in 15 different countries at prestigious venues around the world, plus several lectures in conferences and art universities and three solo shows, at NOME gallery in Berlin, at Art Market Budapest and at Centre Culturel Bellegarde in Toulouse. https://PaoloCirio.net/bio/#exhibitions <https://paolocirio.net/bio/#exhibitions> * 2015 started with *Overexposed*, a project about the dissemination of unauthorized photos of high-ranking U.S. intelligence officials who advocated for mass-surveillance. The art intervention received wide press coverage with over 15 reviews on German national newspapers and beyond. The *Overexposed* series is currently shown in NYC at Pratt Manhattan Gallery and from Jan. 22nd at Art Fair London. https://PaoloCirio.net/work/hd-stencils/overexposed <https://paolocirio.net/work/hd-stencils/overexposed/> * 2015 just ended with a major show at the Museum Academy of Art of China in Hangzhou with a huge installation of *The Hacking Monopolism Trilogy* composed of the artworks of *Amazon Noir*, *Facebook to Facebook* and *Google Will Eat Itself*. In honor of these media performances and sophisticated hacks, China offered a great opportunity to discuss the complexities underpinning the concentration of economic and informational power by global Internet monopolies. https://PaoloCirio.net/work/hacking-monopolism-trilogy <https://paolocirio.net/work/hacking-monopolism-trilogy/> http://Face-To-Facebook.net - http://Amazon-Noir.net - http://GoogleWillEatItself.com * 2016 will be a great year, some new incendiary artworks are in the pipeline for launch and more ideas on art will be presented. For beginning 2016, some upcoming exhibitions are already worth to be reminded, Paolo Cirio’s work will be shown at Artium Museum, Basque MCoCA, Spain; International Kunstverein Luxembourg; Kunstverein Neuhausen, Stuttgart; Museum für Fotografie, Berlin; Centre de la Photographie, Geneva; La Gaîté Lyrique, Paris; Wave Pool Gallery, Cincinnati, U.S.; ICP Bowery, NYC, U.S. and many others. Many thanks to everyone for all the support throughout the years! Enjoy critical information and happy new year! RSA Fair Share report to come out tomorrow
by Michel Bauwens 13 Jan '16

13 Jan '16

The RSA primer on the sharing economy is being published tomorrow. There will be a read-only version on Medium and a download available on the RSA website. The report is essentially a primer on the business model of sharing economy platforms, understanding how the model enables a rise to power and what that means for us all in terms of either trying to manage or counter the influence of these platforms. In the report, the RSA offers: · A new concept of *‘shared value creation’*; · A new process by which we can understand the monopolistic elements of some platforms, which we refer to as *‘crowdsourcing monopoly power’* · An alternative approach to shaping the sharing economy through *‘shared regulation’* · An overview of *the trade-offs (opportunities and challenges) of the sharing economy from a range of perspectives*, presented as the starting point for shared regulation -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

S ocial and solidarity economy, the commons, pu blic action and livelihood” International C onference, Paris may 2016 Dear friends and members of ISA47, I am very glad to announce that ISA47 is a partner organizer of the conference * “Societies in transition. Social and solidarity economy, the commons, public action and livelihood” *that will take place in Paris in May and is co-organized by the CNAM-Paris, the EMES network, the Polanyi Institute. The topic is timely and important for social movement students. Social movements are more than protests. They prefigurate alternatives and create new worlds. All over the world, citizens and movements have built initiative for a social and ecological transition and a fairer world. Solidarity economy and the commons are key elements of many of these initiatives. In this perspective, ISA47 wants to foster dialogues between social movement studies and research on solidarity economy and the commons, as well as dialogues between researchers and actors. This conference is an exceptional opportunities to promote these confluences and dialogues. I thus hope that many of you will send an abstract ( ! before February 1st !) and attend this conference. A selection of short texts by leading participants will be published on our platform Open Movements during the conference. I am very grateful to Professor Jean-Louis Laville, who has set up this conference and whose brilliant work plea for more dialogue between solidarity economy and social movement studies as much as a call for another economy. Very interesting Roberto and indeed there was a confusion on your part The other debate you are referring to is how to avoid the exploitation of the commons by extractive market forces and how to avoid this capture, on which we have a dedicated section in our wiki, http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:P2P_Accounting and our proposals for copyfair licenses if you're not aware of them, I can send you extra material, and I have written an essay on 'from the communism of capital to capital for the commons' re your last questions, it is not at all clear to me how much of this net metering approach would be applicable to other fields (I have copied my colleagues to help think this through) Michel Two interesting directions are open and contributory value accounting practices On Tue, Jan 12, 2016 at 10:29 PM, Roberto Verzola <rverzola(a)gn.apc.org> wrote: > Thus one can think of this phenomenon now as > follows: those who have surplus are contributing to the common pool, > using wires which are also held in common; the those who are short of > electricity draw from this common pool but maybe in the future they > will have some surplus to give to the common pool too. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Open letter to the world’s governments: protect encryption!
by Michel Bauwens 12 Jan '16

12 Jan '16

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Tue, Jan 12, 2016 at 9:42 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Open letter to the world’s governments: protect encryption! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: SUVEILLANCE, INTERNET, ENCRYPTION, FRANCE, MANUEL VALLS, BERNARD CAZENEUVE La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/letter-world-governments-protect-encryption Open letter to the world’s governments: protect encryption! *** Paris, 4 January 2016 — La Quadrature du Net joins other organisations and individuals around the world by signing the open letter to governments in order to encourage them to promote encryption techniques for communications and IT systems. The original letter and its signatories can be found on the website "SecureTheInternet.org"[1]. *** We urge you to protect the security of your citizens, your economy, and your government by supporting the development and use of secure communications tools and technologies, rejecting policies that would prevent or undermine the use of strong encryption, and urging other leaders to do the same. Encryption tools, technologies, and services are essential to protect against harm and to shield our digital infrastructure and personal communications from unauthorized access. The ability to freely develop and use encryption provides the cornerstone for today’s global economy. Economic growth in the digital age is powered by the ability to trust and authenticate our interactions and communicate and conduct business securely, both within and across borders. Some of the most noted technologists and experts on encryption recently explained that laws or policies that undermine encryption would “force a Uturn from the best practices now being deployed to make the Internet more secure,” “would substantially increase system complexity” and raise associated costs, and “would create concentrated targets that could attract bad actors.” The absence of encryption facilitates easy access to sensitive personal data, including financial and identity information, by criminals and other malicious actors. Once obtained, sensitive data can be sold, publicly posted, or used to blackmail or embarrass an individual. Additionally, insufficiently encrypted devices or hardware are prime targets for criminals. The United Nations Special Rapporteur for freedom of expression has noted, “encryption and anonymity, and the security concepts behind them, provide the privacy and security necessary for the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression in the digital age.” As we move toward connecting the next billion users, restrictions on encryption in any country will likely have global impact. Encryption and other anonymizing tools and technologies enable lawyers, journalists, whistleblowers, and organizers to communicate freely across borders and to work to better their communities. It also assures users of the integrity of their data and authenticates individuals to companies, governments, and one another. We encourage you to support the safety and security of users by strengthening the integrity of communications and systems. All governments should reject laws, policies, or other mandates or practices, including secret agreements with companies, that limit access to or undermine encryption and other secure communications tools and technologies. Users should have the option to use – and companies the option to provide the strongest encryption available, including endtoend encryption, without fear that governments will compel access to the content, metadata, or encryption keys without due process and respect for human rights. Accordingly: * Governments should not ban or otherwise limit user access to encryption in any form or otherwise prohibit the implementation or use of encryption by grade or type; * Governments should not mandate the design or implementation of “backdoors” or vulnerabilities into tools, technologies, or services; * Governments should not require that tools, technologies, or services are designed or developed to allow for thirdparty access to unencrypted data or encryption keys; * Governments should not seek to weaken or undermine encryption standards or intentionally influence the establishment of encryption standards except to promote a higher level of information security. No government should mandate insecure encryption algorithms, standards, tools, or technologies; and * Governments should not, either by private or public agreement, compel or pressure an entity to engage in activity that is inconsistent with the above tenets. Strong encryption and the secure tools and systems that rely on it are critical to improving cybersecurity, fostering the digital economy, and protecting users. Our continued ability to leverage the internet for global growth and prosperity and as a tool for organizers and activists requires the ability and the right to communicate privately and securely through trustworthy networks. We look forward to working together toward a more secure future. * References * 1. https://securetheinternet.org/ ** About La Quadrature du Net ** La Quadrature du Net is an advocacy group that defends the rights and freedoms of citizens on the Internet.
