---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Peter Hesseldahl <peter.hesseldahl(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jun 23, 2015 at 6:48 PM Subject: How businesses can adjust to the WE-economy - new report To: For the past year The WE-economy project has examined a set of important trends in technology and the economy, which are likely to significantly change the types of business models and the mindset that can make businesses thrive onwards. The conclusions from the WE-economy are now available as a report, which discusses the changes in background conditions, presents a number of case stories of companies that have changed their strategy – and finally offers a ”toolbox” of approaches and considerations for companies that wish to adjust to remain fit for the future. The report will be presented at a conference in Copenhagen tomorrow - and we’re very happy to send it to - attached. You can find much more information about the We-economy project at: www.we-economy.net … And should you have any questions or comments, you are welcome to contact us. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Kevin Flanagan <kev.flanagan(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Jun 9, 2015 at 2:40 AM Subject: [tapas] Join us for the P2P Summer School and explore the Art of Commoning To: CommonsDeutschland <Silke.Helfrich(a)gmx.de>, David Bollier < david(a)bollier.org>, tapas(a)lists.p2pfoundation.net Dear Friends, We are now making a big push to encourage folks to sign up by the end of June for our P2P Summer School. Any efforts you can make to help spread the word are greatly appreciated. Best Wishes Kevin The Art of Commoning *"What becomes possible when we harness our collective capacity in service of the commons?"* [image: commoning] *25 - 27 August 2015* | WeCreate <http://wecreate.ie/>, Cloughjordan Ecovillage, Tipperary, Ireland *Standard Fee*: €380*/ early bird by June 30th: €340 *Low Income Fee*: €340*/ early bird by June 30th: €310 * Depending on registrations there will be a limited amount of bursary options available. *Pay via Paypal* <http://cultivate.ie/community-resilience/1246-p2p-summer-school#Paypal> Contact Form <http://cultivate.ie/component/contact/contact/88888956-staff/3>. PDF Brochure <http://cultivate.ie/images/ArtOfCommoning.pdf> http://cultivate.ie/community-resilience/1246-p2p-summer-school <http://cultivate.ie/images/ArtOfCommoning.pdf> *Overview* Many roads lead to the commons: the collaborative economy, open culture, technology and knowledge sharing, shared meaning-making, protecting biodiversity, seed saving, our natural resources, and more. As “commoners” we practice engaging with others to create impact that lasts longer and is more sustainable than anything we can accomplish on our own. Together we maintain and govern the infrastructures that benefit the public as a whole and beyond. We invite you to join us in shared inquiry for a 3-day gathering in beautiful rural Ireland. *The core of our inquiry centres on the following questions:* • What becomes possible when we harness our collective capacity in service of the commons? • How can the commons, peer-to-peer and participatory approaches support the transition to a more sustainable way of life? • Can we create livelihoods through co-operatives that enrich and sustain the commons? • How can a commons-based collaborative economy strengthen the resilience of our communities? *What should you expect?* The Summer School will be grounded in the actual practice of collaboration and finding synergies. Some theoretical input, both on P2P and Art of Hosting, will also be offered - mostly in short modules. New developments in P2P will be shared by Michel Bauwens and Kevin Flanagan, Art of Hosting models and practices by Davie Philip and Ria Baeck. The overall aim is to balance and integrate concrete learning outcomes for all. Coming from P2P, explorations are likely to cover topics such as new forms of cooperative enterprise, P2P money, crowdfunding, open value accounting, P2P legal developments, etc. Coming from AoH, you will learn how to better design conversations that invite full participation and engagement. This event builds on the experience of the Art of Hosting event ( http://bollier.org/blog/art-commoning) held in autumn 2014 in Montréal and the Open Everything Collaborative Economy Convergence held in Ireland in September 2014. Who is this for? If you are a citizen, student, entrepreneur, cultural worker, adult educator, facilitator of change, coach or working with your local community and wanting to develop collaborative and participatory practices to empower social change and steward resources, then this Summer School is for you. No matter your level of experience, or area of interest and activity, you are sure to take home many new insights and practices for your own commons project whatever it is about! Not to mention new friends and transformative experiences. Extended 5-day If 3 days seem too short for such an adventure you are welcome to come a day early (Monday Aug. 24). The Ecovillage (see below), Ireland and all these inspiring participants offer much to discover and learn from. You can also stay a day longer (Friday Aug. 28). We know from experience that these gatherings start with connecting and bringing our questions to life while the gatherings afterward give space for further synergies to emerge and make for a smoother transition for your own next steps. Of course you can also enjoy some leisure time and explore the countryside! *Unique Setting for the Summer School* The summer school will be held in the new WeCreate Workspace in Cloughjordan Ecovillage, winner of Ireland's national Green Community award and also the UN backed International Award for Liveable Communities. In this setting, you will be able to see many commons initiatives and key sustainable community systems in working practice and hear the stories of people seeking to play their part in the transition to a low carbon society. Cloughjordan is a vibrant, rural village where progressive projects have been successfully integrated into a traditional local community. The Ecovillage offers a rich environment for learning about the mainstreaming of sustainability and progressing a commons approach. Of course the ecovillage also has its challenges, and contributing to its ever-developing life will provide another opportunity for learning unexpected things by doing. The blending of people with different skills and backgrounds, from within the peer-to-peer, commons and sustainability movements and the community of practitioners of the Art of Hosting offers unprecedented opportunities for learning and the emergence of novel synergies. Sharing our practices, knowledge and experiences within the setting of the emerging ecosystem of innovation that is the Cloughjordan Ecovillage will offer many great benefits for individuals, communities and beyond. Food and Accommodation Accommodation is available in Djangos Hostel <http://www.djangoshostel.com/> (+353 87 256 9348), locally in the Ecovillage. B&B options are also available, contact philippa@ cultivate.ie for a list. Lunch is included in the fee and dinner is available in a number of venues within walking distance of the venue. *Participation Fee* There are only 40 places available for this event and full participation in the 3 days is required. We know that participants for this gathering come from different economic backgrounds and we have different rates to reflect this diversity; also because we need to create a balance where those who can afford it pay the higher rates so that others with less financial possibilities can participate. There is an early bird rate for bookings made before June 30th and we need 15 participants to have registered and paid before this date to make this event work! If you wish to attend please register right away. *Organisers* This gathering is co-organised and co-created by the following groups who are deeply engaged in service to the commons: *The Peer-to-Peer Foundation (P2PF)* are a global network of activists and researchers dedicated to advocacy and research of peer to peer dynamics in society. The Peer to Peer Foundation explore P2P in its broadest sense. The Collaborative Economy, the Sharing Economy, Free Libre Open Source Software, Creative Commons, Open Design, Maker Spaces, Coworking, FabLabs, Crowdfunding, all represent the seeds of a new paradigm and a transformative vision for the future where participation, collaboration and cooperation are at the heart of our economy and society. The P2PF maintain a comprehensive directory of P2P projects and practices at http://p2pfoundation.net *Art of Hosting Conversations that Matter (AoH)* is an integral set of practices that elicits the collective wisdom and capacity of groups to self-organise in creative, constructive, humane ways. The ability to convene and connect people, locally and globally, empowers communities to self-organise around their interests, to share experiences and produce valuable knowledge resources and commons at scales previously only possible through hierarchical and capital-intensive, command-and-control economies. It is also a fast-growing, self-organised globe-spanning network that hosts conversations in all parts of society that lead to novel insights and wiser actions. http://www.artofhosting.org *Cultivate Living and Learning* is managed by the Sustainable Ireland Cooperative, which designs and facilitates learning journeys, hosts training in community resilience and offers courses in Permaculture and innovation. technology-science, universal labour, general intellect, class war, information (was: Internet Social Forum)

Quote below from 1999, N. Dyer-Witheford's Cyber-Marx (pp. 3-7), is more then worth to recall here: "Marx and Babbage To establish some of the issues and conflicts central to this study it may be useful for a moment to look back in the past, to the `actual' Babbage and Marx. In fact, the opposition between Babbage--capitalist-computer-savant--and Marx--insurrectionary revolutionary--which Gibson and Sterling propose is well founded in the historical archive. Although Babbage's pioneer attempts to develop machine intelligence collapsed, partly because of the limits of 19th century engineering, partly because of his managerial conflicts with the craft-workers crucial to the production of the "engines," his influence was far in excess of that normally associated with a failed inventor. As Simon Schaffer has recently shown, Babbage was an eminent member of a coterie of radical utilitarian thinkers, including such figures as the political economist Andrew Ure, the philosopher Jeremy Bentham and his brother Samuel, and industrialists such as Marc Brunel and Henry Maudsley, all dedicated to the scientific organisation of a nascent industrial capitalism.3 Indeed, Babbage himself wrote a book in this tradition of Ricardian political economy --- On The Economy of Machinery and Manufactures--which in its argument for the deskilling and fragmentation of labour is now recognised as anticipating Frederick Taylor's system of "scientific management."4 Babbage's search for mechanical means to automate labour--both manual and mental--were the logical extension of the desire to reduce and eventually eliminate from production a human factor whose presence could only appear to the new industrialists as a source of constant indiscipline, error and menace. And this in turn was only part of wider project of industrial planning which foresaw the society-wide mobilisation of theoretical knowledge in the service of manufacture, overseen by a "new class of managerial analysts," such as Babbage himself, who would become "the supreme legislators of social welfare" and be rewarded with "newfangled life peerages and political power."5 In such schemes, the mechanical maximisation of capitalist profit mercifully coincided with the highest theological aspirations, for Babbage believed that, "machine intelligence was all that was needed to understand and model the rule of God, whether based on the miraculous works of the Supreme Intelligence or on his promise of an afterlife."6 Marx, Babbage's contemporary, read his work. And what he found in its pages was not evidence of the ineluctable march of progress, or an approach to divine wisdom, but a strategy of class war. Writing in London, within living memory of the Luddite revolts that had seen hundreds hanged or transported and vast sections of England subject to martial law, Marx analysed the introduction of machinofacture as a means by which the bourgeoisie strove to subjugate a recalcitrant proletariat. He alludes to Babbage's writings in the great chapter of Capital --"Machinery and Large Scale Industry"--where he describes how the factory owners' relentless transfer of workers' skills into technological systems gives class conflict the form of a "struggle between worker and machine."7 He cites, as evidence of the political economist's technological strategy, the work of Babbage's colleague, Ure, who in the conclusion to his 1835 The Philosophy of Manufactures declared "when capital enlists science into her service, the refractory hand of labour will always be taught docility."8 "It would be possible" Marx observes, "to write a whole history of the inventions made since 1830 for the sole purpose of providing capital with weapons against working class revolt."9 Later, in a section of volume three of Capital entitled "Economy Through Inventions," Marx again footnotes Babbage. Commenting on capital's ever-increasing use of machines, he notes that "mechanical and chemical discoveries" are actually the result of a social co-operative process that he calls "universal labour": Universal labour is all scientific work, all discovery and invention. It is brought about partly by the co-operation of men now living, but partly also by building on earlier work.10 The fruits of this collective project are, Marx argues, generally appropriated by the "most worthless and wretched kind of money-capitalists."11 But the ultimate source of their profit is the "new developments of the universal labour of the human spirit and their social applications by combined labour."12 Marx had already discussed this tension between the social nature of technoscientific development and its private expropriation by capital--in the final pages of the notebooks for Capital, the Grundrisse. Here, he again makes passing reference to Babbage as, in some of the most volcanically brilliant of all Marx's writing, he foretells the future technological trajectory of capitalism.13 At a certain point, Marx predicts, capital's drive to dominate living labour through machinery will mean that "the creation of real wealth comes to depend less on labour time and on the amount of labour employed" than on "the general state of science and on the progress of technology."14 The key factor in production will become the social knowledge necessary for technoscientific innovation-- "general intellect."15 Marx points in particular to two technological systems whose full development will mark the era of "general intellect"--automatic machinery, which, he predicts, will all but eliminate workers from the factory floor, and the global networks of transport and consolidation binding together the world market. With these innovations, Marx says, capital will appear to attain an unassailable pinnacle of technoscientific power. However- -and this is the whole point of Marx's analysis--inside this bourgeois dream lie the seeds of a bourgeois nightmare. For by setting in motion the powers of scientific knowledge and social co-operation capital undermines the basis of its own rule. Automation, by massively reducing the need for labour, will subvert the wage relations--the basic institution of capitalist society. And the profoundly social qualities of the new technoscientific systems-- so dependent for their invention and operation on forms of collective, communicative, co- operation--will overflow the parameters of private property. The more technoscience is applied to production, the less sustainable will become the attachment of income to labour and the containment of creativity within the commodity form. In the era of general intellect "capital thus works towards its own dissolution as the form dominating production."16 Babbage and Marx were alike prophets of today's information society. But their prophecies are radically opposed--one promising the technoscientific consolidation of market relations, the other the dissolution of that rule. Both spoke, as befits nineteenth century men of science, in tones of confident certainty. After the catastrophes and surprises of the twentieth century, such teleological certainty should no longer be available to any one. Nevertheless, the predictions of both Babbage and Marx are alive and well today, present as vectors of struggle, antagonistic potentialities meeting in a collision that I term `the contest for general intellect.' But surely this must be a joke? Are not Marx and Marxism now so thoroughly discredited, so fatally consigned to the dustbin of a history which has itself been dispatched to postmodernist on-screen trash-cans, that any attempt to re-invoke their memory can only be an exercise in speculative dreaming or historical nostalgia? Since Marxism, assailed from all quarters, is generally deemed to have died the death of a thousand cuts it is important, at the very outset, to take difference with this prevailing view." I will also run some test-groups with them and really enquire around the language to be used. Short intro text proposed by Michel: The following are four short introductory videos that explain the basic ideas around peer to peer as a new system to create and distributed value, as proposed by the P2P Foundation. Part 1 focuses on peer to peer as a specific type of relationship, in which peers create commons Part 2 focuses on peer to peer 'politics' Part 3 focuses on the economics of peer to peer, i.e. commons-based peer production Part 4 presents key proposals to make peer production communities more autonomous, i.e. it presents open cooperativism and the idea of a copyfair license The videos were realized by Michel Bauwens, Irma Wilson, and xx, during a stay in Johannessburg, South Africa in June 2015."

These were very nice. Very well crystallizes the core concepts. I've passed these to the Reddit and Kurzweil futurism forums to see what sort of reaction they might stir up--though I suspect they may still be a bit beyond them. Abolition of the Wages System
by Tom Walker 18 Jun '15

18 Jun '15

Nine days from today, June 27, 2015 will be the 150th anniversary of Marx's call for abolition of the wages system. I have argued that managing collective labor power as a common pool resource, rather than selling it as an individually owned commodity is the key to abolition of the wages system. The anniversary of Marx's address to the Central Council of the International Workingmen's Association is a propitious occasion for talking about what it might mean to abolish the wages system and how such a formidable task might be accomplished. Let's talk about it. I will be posting at EconoSpeak on the topic in the days leading up to the June 27 anniversary. Cheers, Tom Walker (Sandwichman)

This panoramic work reveals the relentless force of material destruction and brutal violence concealed by the sleek surfaces of digital culture’ – Benjamin Noys, Professor of Critical Theory, University of Chichester and author of *Malign Velocities: Accelerationism and Capitalism* ----------------- Coltan mines in the Congo; electronics factories in China; devastated neighbourhoods in Detroit. *Cyber-Proletariat* shows us the dark-side of the information revolution; an unsparing analysis of class power and computerisation. Nick Dyer-Witheford reveals how technology facilitates growing polarisation between wealthy elites and precarious workers. He reveals the class domination behind everything from expanding online surveillance to intensifying robotisation. At the same time he looks at possibilities for information technology within radical movements; contemporary struggles are cast in the blue glow of the computer screen. *Cyber-Proletariat* brings heterodox Marxist analysis to bear on modern technological developments. The result will be indispensable to social theorists and hacktivists alike and essential reading for anyone who wants to understand how Silicon Valley shapes the way we live today. _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
