Joint Statement by De Nieuwe Universiteit, Humanities Rally and ReThink UvA, 11/3/2015
by Örsan Şenalp 11 Mar '15

English translation: Joint Statement by De Nieuwe Universiteit, Humanities Rally and ReThink UvA Yesterday, the CvB published a list of ten points addressing the stewardship and institutional culture of the university. After persistent denial, the CvB has finally made a rhetorical U-turn, a direct consequence of our protest and efforts. We welcome this development, but efforts are needed to progress beyond changes in tone. The proposals of the CvB are vague and they do not resolve the crisis of trust. Our demands for a financial investigation and our call for a moratorium on restructuring remain unaddressed. We reiterate these demands. It remains up to us, students and staff of the university, to ensure concrete change: democratization and decentralization. We will continue to work to establish a genuine academic environment – one that strives for actual participation and inclusion beyond the existing consultative bodies. Our aim is to ensure that governance and accountability go hand in hand in a collegial environment. In order to maintain the space we have created for this, we will continue our protest. We invite all staff and students to participate in the development of truly democratic governance structures at the department, faculty, and university level. To ensure the coordination of a university-wide agenda, we will establish a representative body of students and staff in order to achieve sustainable change.

Fwd: Sacred Water of Life

[image: Kosmos Journal Newsletter] <http://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c1…> MARCH 10TH, 2015 Sacred Water of Life *‘Water gives life to the world and does not strive.’ – Lao Tsu* Dear Readers, It is the source of all Life, yet in most ‘developed’ places we take it for granted. Still, few could go even a single day without it. So, consider that 1 in 9 people worldwide do not have access to safe and clean water. What would you do if you could not provide a drink of water to your child? The United Nations estimates that Sub-Saharan Africa alone uses 40 billion hours per year collecting water; the same as an entire year’s labor in all of France. It’s usually fetched by women and girls. March 22nd is World Water Day. We have compiled some basic resources to help imagine the kind of future we want as fresh water becomes increasingly scarce. How will we manage this precious resource fairly so the needs of all Life can be met? How can we use water as a means to build cooperation and trust, instead of another excuse for conflict? We hope you use this time to remember Water, enjoy its beauty and think to conserve it however you can; maybe take part in efforts to protect and maintain your local watershed, or contribute in even deeper ways. According to the World Health Organization, for every $1 invested in water and sanitation, there is an economic return of between $3 and $34. Please share these articles. On Twitter, you can use #WorldWaterDay and #WaterIs to share messages about Water and Sustainability @UN-Water. And visit http://www.unwater.org/worldwaterday <http://kosmosjournal.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a2e6f01f29f00e615c14…> to learn more. Water is a beautiful metaphor for the mind. We speak of being ‘in the flow’, our feelings as calm or troubled, our emotions ‘stirred’. Perhaps it’s because we ourselves are mostly composed of water, and we recall our primordial source, the pull of the sea. Ours is a state of interbeing with all the waters of the earth…yesterday’s wandering cloud is surely the tea in our cup today. The changing season reminds us of water’s remarkable ability to transform and to carve a new course when needed. May we be like that. To be conversant about water and issues around its uses, here are some fascinating facts and statistics compiled by UN Water. 97.5% of all water on Earth is salt water, leaving only 2.5% as fresh water. Of this nearly 70% is frozen in the icecaps of Antarctica and Greenland; most of the remainder is present as soil moisture, or lies in deep underground aquifers as groundwater not accessible to human use. Only 1% of the world’s fresh water is accessible for direct human uses – all uses – including drinking, bathing, agriculture and manufacturing. Almost every government in the world bases all their policies on the growth imperative. Unlimited growth, more stuff, more trade, less regulation, more power to the corporations. It’s no coincidence that it’s good for certain wealthy groups that can buy their way out of this crisis. This system is destroying water. We do not have the right kind of thinking in most capitals… If they talk about water it’s as a result of climate change, but it’s not a result of climate change, the abuse of water and the displacement of water from where it should be, is one of the causes of climate change. And we absolutely need a separate process. Mobilizing political will and commitment to address water issues worldwide is critical now, and new ways are needed to approach local, regional and international cooperation, including strong citizen participation in decision-making. The people who rely on waterways for survival and livelihood should be the first ones consulted on its fair use at the local, bioregional and international levels. And all decisions have to be made in a way that respects the biophysical limits of the earth. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Örsan Şenalp <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> Date: 8 March 2015 at 21:21 Subject: New WG is formed: Reporting back from the first meeting of the Peer Producing FLOS and Commons University WG To: Nieuwe Universiteit <nieuwuni(a)gmail.com>, "rethink-uva(a)list.uva.nl" <rethink-uva(a)list.uva.nl> Contact person: Orsan Senalp (networg.nl) Email: networg(a)networg.nl Objective: To design and implement ‘the new university’ in a way it is grounded and working at the #Maagdenuis and p2p networked to outside world, now. It’s form, content / curriculum, and governance will be peer produced, as in some of the free/libre and open source projects, where people can produce, shared, and disseminate knowledge as a commons, by each participants. What we have in mind is to construct an working ‘emancipatory’ model, where students and academic workers, of UvA and in general, empowers each other and delivers emancipatory knowledge for the use of broader society. Such model needs to be thought in binary opposition to the current ‘disciplinary’ model that is designed to maintain the status-quo that favours the rich, powerful, greedy, a-social, destructive, and boring ruling classes. Therefore one criteria for the new networked university we have, is the emancipatory empowerment of all the participating nodes. Report from the first meeting: * We initially decided to hold 3 regular meetings per week (every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), at the same time (14:00) and same place (@Cafeteria / in case it is too noisy @Cinema in the Room 223), to work further on and put the ideas in practise. * Some of us will be attending in the earliest GA to report back updates -either on the same evening or the next day. In any case will send reports and updates to the email(lists) * Before Wednesday 11 March, we will prepare and secure online and physical space and infrastructure to communicate the program as we build it (including the course flow, initiator's contact info, location, time so on), and to deliver the classes. The infrastructure will be composed of an online pad (titanpad), physical large board, somewhere visible at the maagdenhuis (fixed location), in the physical class we will have a projector, computer, sound system, papers and pens, etc. online attending to the class will be possible. * Who ever like to initiate or take place in the classes would send email to the WG, add info in the board or pad, or join in the WG meetings to make a proposal. Classes and the program will be noticed at the GA as updates. Initiators are obliged to meet the criteria by letting us know how and why their course / class / skill share..etc. initiative is emancipatory. * We would seek to work closely with media, program and networking groups of the DNU and Re-Think UvA. * Another initial idea is to think further on the idea of embedding such knowledge liberation practise into a broader cooperative and solidarity economy frame-network * Next meeting: 9 Monday, 14:00, @Cafeteria, #Maagdenhuis, Spui 21, Amsterdam WG online spaces: WG-Central Pad: https://titanpad.com/PeerProducingFLOSandCommonsUniversityWG Program/Board: … in progress Minutes / Decisions: … in progress Loomio Group: https://www.loomio.org/g/R3eZtGlm/p2p-flos-commons-university-wg-dnu-re-thi… E-list: … in progress

Fwd: Violence Prevention Conference

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Joám Evans Pim <jevans(a)nonkilling.org> Date: Sun, Mar 8, 2015 at 4:25 PM Subject: Violence Prevention Conference To: *Call for Proposals – Meeting to bring together academics and implementers* The Center for Global Nonkilling is happy to announce that this year, the World Health Organization Violence Prevention Alliance ( http://www.who.int/violenceprevention) will be holding its first Annual Academic Meeting alongside the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention 7th Milestones Meeting in Geneva. The side event will be held on the day before the two-day Meeting, on Monday, September 21, 2015, 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Participants will also be able to register to attend the Milestones Meeting after the event. The theme – “Merging Evidence and Implementation” – invites proposals from academics, practitioners, and policymakers alike, in the spirit of the VPA and the Milestones Meeting, bringing together different sectors invested in violence prevention. The academic framework will allow for these different sectors to come into conversation, in a series of roundtables and townhall meetings. We hope that the unique setting will allow for fruitful exchange: implementers can hear about research in plain language, and academics can find ways to better meet the needs of practice. Eventually, the goal of this event is to establish a dialogue among academics, implementers, researchers, and practitioners, in order to encourage more collaborative projects, such as partnerships to help disseminate knowledge or to document work in the field. Submission deadline – a 200- to 300-word proposal is requested by Wednesday, April 15, 2015, and should be submitted via email: bandy.lee(a)yale.edu. The format is either: (a) roundtables, with a selection of 3-4 presenters to speak for 10 minutes, after which a general discussion will ensue; or (b) poster presentations. Themes of the roundtables will be determined by the accepted proposals, although all topics related to violence prevention are welcome (e.g., description of a problem or intervention, areas of research, recent policy initiatives, etc.). Notification – All presenters will be notified via email of their proposal status by Friday, May 15, 2015. Registration and Membership – You do not have to be a Violence Prevention Alliance member to submit a proposal or to attend as a delegate. Non-academics and scholars/practitioners from the Global South are especially welcome and will be given priority. Registration is free, but spaces are limited, and all attendees are asked to register via email: bandy.lee(a)yale.edu. Article Writing Workshop – This will be held at the end of the day, at 6 - 9 p.m., after the conference and in the same venue. It is open to all, but especially to low- and middle-income country scholars who are looking to publish their work. This event requires a separate registration, by email: bandy.lee(a)yale.edu. Please note that there will be a preparatory assignment. Milestones Meeting – Participants who are also interested in attending the Global Campaign for Violence Prevention Milestones Meeting on September 22-23, 2015, are invited to register at: http://www.who.int/violence_injury_prevention/violence/7th_milestones_meeti… Scholarships – While we are still waiting on some funding sources, scholarships are unfortunately not likely to be available in time for this year. If you have your own potential funding sources, however, we would gladly write letters of acceptance or of support that would help you to procure the funds. If you would like to make a donation, please contact us. Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to seeing you in Geneva! Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Trade Secrets: We Must Act To Protect Whistleblowers!

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Wed, Mar 4, 2015 at 9:21 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Trade Secrets: We Must Act To Protect Whistleblowers! To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: FREE SPEECH, TRADE SECRETS, SURVEILLANCE, JULIAN ASSANGE, CHELSEA MANNING, EDWARD SNOWDEN La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/trade-secrets-we-must-act-to-protect-whistl… Trade Secrets: We Must Act To Protect Whistleblowers! *** Paris, 3 March 2015 — In late April 2015, the “trade secrets” directive will be discussed in the European Parliament. Having already given in to the pressure of journalists to remove the article on trade secrets in the French Macron Bill, La Quadrature du Net, Pila and a number of other organisations now call on president François Hollande and European representatives to defend whistleblowers, to define and protect their status and to ensure the necessary means are provided for judiciary follow-up on the crimes and offences that are revealed. The situation of whistleblowers, such as Edward Snowden or Chelsea Manning, is often dramatic and they must be protected and their safety guaranteed in order to safeguard fundamental freedoms. *** On 30 January, following the uproar of French journalists, French President François Holland demanded [1] the article on trade secrets be removed from the Macron Bill. Despite this victory for the freedom to inform and denounce the illicit activities of private corporations, whistleblowers remain threatened. Indeed, the current draft [2] of a European directive to be debated at the end of April in the European Parliament criminalises the violation of trade secrets in Europe, without an effective protection of whistleblowers. In order to raise awareness on the dangers weighing on the freedom to inform, La Quadrature du Net along with other organisations has penned an op-ed in yesterday's Libération (fr) [3] and a open letter letter to the French President. In May 2008 and February 2011, Wikileaks leaked to the press the draft versions of ACTA, a multi-lateral agreement which was denounced by La Quadrature du Net until its striking demise [4] before the European Parliament in July 2012. In July 2013, Edward Snowden, then working for the NSA, left the USA to take refuge in Hong-Kong and entrust journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras with thousands of documents proving mass spying of communications, including those of its own citizens, by the USA and its allies. Even though their contribution to the democratic debate have been crucial and the scandals they revealed huge, Julian Assange, Chelsea Manning, Edward Snowden and many other whistleblowers have been and continue to be persecuted for their actions. The directive [5] intended to be discussed in late April in the European Parliament could dramatically worsen the risks weighing on the citizens who make the publication of these crucial documents possible. It contains heavy sanctions against any person infringing on trade secrets, all without precisely defining a particular status for whistleblowers which would not only protect but also support them. “Thanks to Edward Snowden's revelations on the mass surveillance of communications, to those of Swissleaks on how banking confidentiality is abused or those of Luxleaks on how large corporations find arrangements with taxes in Europe, the EU is discovering the importance of whistleblowers and the possibility to denounce crimes, offences and the lack of moral limits in private corporations and public structures. It is unacceptable that these same whistleblowers be threatened with sanctions by the Members of the European Parliament in the name of protecting private interests! On the contrary, it is urgent to help protect them and finally create proper procedures for investigating the crimes and offenses that they reveal to the public eye.” declared Benjamin Sonntag, co-founder of La Quadrature du Net. fyi about the enspiral governance model ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Dante-Gabryell Monson <dante.monson(a)gmail.com> Date: Fri, Mar 6, 2015 at 8:53 AM Subject: Becoming an Enspiral Venture To: "econowmix(a)googlegroups.com" <econowmix(a)googlegroups.com>, " op-n-m(a)googlegroups.com" <op-n-m(a)googlegroups.com> https://github.com/enspiral/agreements/blob/master/agreements/ventures.md#b… ( or pdf : http://static1.squarespace.com/static/5169f4a1e4b0fdc6c23ef665/t/535e0ecfe4… ) http://www.shareable.net/blog/enspiral-changing-the-way-social-entrepreneur… also see this post on Loomio about Reciprocity Licenses <https://www.loomio.org/d/sKCNdenw/p2p-economics-and-commons-based-reciproci…> : Simon : *" Scoop (a news organisation in NZ) has become an enspiral venture and apparently uses something like a CBRL <http://www.scoop.co.nz/stories/HL1502/S00156/universities-and-scoopconzs-in…> for use of its content* " Bob asking to Simon : how did Scoop become an enspiral venture? (That’s interesting in itself, as an example of software ecosystem evolution.) Simon's reply : They went through the process described at https://github.com/enspiral/agreements/blob/master/agreements/ventures.md#b… /// Becoming an Enspiral Venture Process: 1. New company writes a company introduction based on the existing template <https://drive.google.com/a/enspiral.com/folderview?id=0Bxr3iqrIRxyQakpRN2Zy…> 2. Their introduction is posted in the members Loomio, to let members know about them and provide a space for discussion, questions, comments, etc (no proposal yet). 3. A one month “getting to know” you phase starts, which goes both ways of them getting to know us and us getting to know them. New company people come on G+ and Loomio, members make an effort to talk to them, meet for coffee, etc, and they ask any questions and clarify the value proposition and values fit on both sides. 4. We ask the company if they definitely want to join, and if so, a proposal is started in the above Loomio discussion for members to officially approve or not. 5. If approved (by consensus - with 75% member engagement), the company and the Foundation officially determine the contribution relationship (revenue share, etc). 6. We have a welcome celebration! Being an Enspiral Venture Give 1. Revenue share - choose % and $ cap and rate 2. Engagement with the Network - Transparency, we share data and internal information with each other. - Reporting, we take the time to summarise our activities and update the Network. - Communications, reps from each company are active with core comms, including Loomio, responding to requests from News, and Google+ - Ventures also offer the network other in kind contributions as they wish. Receive - Benefits described above - Profile on enspiral.com website - Represent as an official enspiral company - Full use of enspiral.com backend - Company Box access Special Types of Ventures There are three additional types of Enspiral Ventures which have slightly different relationships with the network. Enspiral Services Teams Enspiral Services Limited houses multiple teams who share a common legal structure to increase collaboration and reduce overheads. Some of those teams may apply to be full ventures in their own right. The ones that do act as individual ventures in every other way and the fact they part of Enspiral Services is more of a legal footnote than a substantive difference. Enspiral Branded Ventures An Enspiral Branded Venture behaves like a regular venture except it carries the Enspiral name in its title and uses the Enspiral logo as part of its core identity. The shared branding has additional benefits and risks to the network so they have a few more criteria - All staff (directors and employees - excluding external contractors) must be Enspiral Contributors - If the venture ever leaves the network they must remove any Enspiral branding from their name or logo Enspiral Owned Companies An Enspiral owned company (eg Enspiral Spaces) is wholly owned by the Enspiral Foundation and are assets that are collectively held by the network. - Status <https://status.github.com/> - API <https://developer.github.com> - Training <http://training.github.com> - Shop <http://shop.github.com> - Blog <https://github.com/blog> - About <https://github.com/about> <https://github.com> <https://github.com> -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fairshare Model Karl Sjogren <https://www.linkedin.com/profile/view?id=405822&authType=name&authToken=lrG…> November 25, 2014 11:17 PM You replied to this message: I’m writing a book on a performance-based capital structure for companies that seek to raise venture capital via a public offering. I call it the Fairshare Model because it balances and aligns the interests of investors and employees. It has implications for how to attract funding to companies that have poor access to equity funding but who have the ability to attract an affinity group of public investors. More significantly, it has potential to help companies attract and manage human capital. I’ve posted a few draft chapters from my book-in-progress here http://fairsharemodel.com/?page_id=102 Also there is a slide deck I presented recently. A version of the deck optimized for mobile devices is here http://www.slideshare.net/kmsjogren/sjogren-nabe-presentation-101414 -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/
