Richard Hall - Against Educational Technology in the Neoliberal University
by Christian Fuchs 17 Mar '15

17 Mar '15

Richard Hall - Against Educational Technology in the Neoliberal University CAMRI Seminar Wed, March 25, 14:00 Univ of Westminster Harrow Campus Room A7.01 Registration: email to christian.fuchs(a)uti.at http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/research-seminars/richard-hall-against-e… In the Grundrisse, Marx argued that the circulation of productive capital was “a process of transformation, a qualitative process of value”. As capitalists sought to overcome the barriers to this transformatory process, they worked to revolutionise both the means of production via organisational and technological change, and circulation time via transportation and communication changes. Reducing friction in the production and circulation of capital is critical to the extraction of surplus value, and Marx argued that in this transformation “Capital by its nature drives beyond every spatial barrier [and]… the annihilation of space by time - becomes an extraordinary necessity for it.” Higher education is increasingly a space which is being recalibrated so as to increase the mobility or fluidity of intellectual production and circulation. Thus, technology, technical services and techniques are deployed to collapse the interfaces between space and time, and to subsume academic labour inside processes for valorisation. However, this collapse also reveals the stresses and strains of antagonisms, as the friction of neoliberal higher education reform deforms existing cultures and histories. Through such a deformation, it also reminds us of alternative historical and material re-imaginings and alternatives like the Chilean CyberSyn project, the Ecuadorian National Plan for Good Living, the Hornsey Experiment, and so on. This presentation argues that inside the University, the deployment of technologies, technical services and techniques enables education and academic labour to be co-opted for value-production. As a result, academics and students are defined as entrepreneurial subjects with limited power-to produce a world beyond value. A question is the extent to which pedagogical and transitional alternatives might be described, and whether in the process it is possible to uncover ways in which education might be used for co-operation rather than competition, as a form of resistance. Richard Hall is Professor of Education and Technology at De Montfort University, Leicester, UK. At DMU he is Head of Enhancing Learning through Technology and leads the Centre for Pedagogic Research. Richard is a National Teaching Fellow and a co-operator at the Social Science Centre in Lincoln, UK. He writes about life in higher education at: http://richard-hall.org

Fwd: Control Freak Societies
by Michel Bauwens 14 Mar '15

14 Mar '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Bob Reuschlein <bobreuschlein(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Mar 14, 2015 at 8:57 PM Subject: Control Freak Societies To: Link to send to others by: https://bobreuschlein.wordpress.com/2015/03/14/control-freak-societies/ *Control Freak Societies* by Dr. Bob Reuschlein We see it everywhere. Everyone is trying to control everyone else. Especially here in the United States of America. Where does it come from? Just as achievement is the hallmark of fast growing societies, control is the hallmark of empire societies. Empire societies are relatively static, low growth societies, with many social problems. Control comes from the militarism of such a society. Control is the essence of the military culture, where following orders is the main thing you do. Too much individuality and you lose your place in the system. Followers are wanted, not people who might take your place if you give them a chance. As a friend of mine said about academics, improve things 2% and you are admired, improve things 3% or more and you are crazy. Know your place, know your rank, and don’t get too uppity. Judge people by who they are and where they are at, don’t listen to them if they are beneath your rank. Lots of people have risen to their level of incompetence according to the Peter principle and they are determined to lord it over you and abuse their authority. This has shown up in my personal experience living in a fast growing West Coast state for almost twenty years and returning to a slow growing Midwest state for over the last twenty years. Living on the West Coast I could walk into the offices of important people around the town of Eugene, Oregon and talk to them easily. Here in the Midwest I have trouble getting past the gatekeepers to reach the people I need to talk to. A friend from the same doctoral cohort is hard to get hold of, so I drop into his office and catch him moving around while the secretary in the background fumes. I see the community college president in a meeting and one of his aides suggests I talk to the provost. Then I try to do so, and I hit a brick wall. No wonder mayor Paul Soglin of Madison says we are the #9 city in snobbery. San Francisco, by the way, is #1 in snobbery. In Eugene, I just walked into the office of the school superintendent and talked to her one day, and just walked into the office of the vice president for research of the University of Oregon and talked to him another day. Here in Madison, people recommend I talk to certain people about presenting my work and I am treated rudely. At national and local conferences of various sorts I often present, and even when I just drop in at the last moment, I often steal the show from the sidelines. But you can see the resentment on certain faces, even though people are amazed in the restrooms or walking around after my presentations or questions. In Eugene they kept asking me back for TV interviews, in Madison, a radio control freak changed the nature of the program I was using to air my thoughts to once a month rather than once a week. They also limited questions on their call in shows to once a week just because a very knowledgeable friend of mine called in his excellent questions frequently. And this is supposed to be a community radio station. I saw the death of investigative journalism in the Reagan years in Eugene. I attended the local forums of labor, democrats, moderate republicans, and hard line republicans in the early eighties. One radio station regularly covered these forums in the early eighties but was not to be seen after a few years. I called in regularly on C-SPAN in the eighties. Wisconsin public radio took my calls for many years in the nineties, but now, since a Voice of America guy took over the broadcast, access is more narrowly limited. It is harder than ever to get the truth out in empire America as the decades go by. Even Jimmy Carter decries the death of real democracy in America. Just look at how open Al Jazeera America is compared to FOX, CNN, and even MSNBC. "Workshop on the Sharing Economy" ( Call for Papers - Utrecht University )
by Dante-Gabryell Monson 13 Mar '15

13 Mar '15

http://www.ecolise.eu/?p=577 *The Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development, Utrecht University, The Netherlands, has launched a call for papers for the first International Workshop on the Sharing Economy on 4-5 June 2015.* [image: utrecht] <http://www.ecolise.eu/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/utrecht.jpg> In a strict sense, the sharing economy can be defined as consumers granting each other (“peer-to-peer”) temporary access to their under-utilized physical assets, possibly for money. In a broader sense, the sharing economy also includes peer-to-peer services (Uber, Lending Club, Taskrabbit, Helpling), product-service systems (Zipcar, Philips lighting) and redistribution markets (eBay, freecycling groups on Facebook). Along with its rapid growth, however, the sharing economy has also come under fire. This criticism focuses in particular on unfair competition between platforms and regular companies, overrated environmental gains, the tendency towards monopoly and the erosion of workers’ rights. In sum, sharing practices yield promises and problems, which only recently have become subject of scientific research. This workshop aims to bring together researchers from all disciplines and regions to discuss scientific research on the sharing economy. *Send in your full paper or extended abstract to k.frenken(a)uu.nl <k.frenken(a)uu.nl> before March 15, 2015.* .................................................. http://www.uu.nl/en/events/first-international-workshop-on-the-sharing-econ… >From 4 June 2015 08:30 to 5 June 2015 17:30 First international workshop on the sharing economy The sharing economy is a fast-growing phenomenon. People increasingly share their home, car, clothing or tools on Internet platforms such as Airbnb, Relayrides, BlaBlaCar and Peerby. In a strict sense, the sharing economy can be defined as consumers granting each other (“peer-to-peer”) temporary access to their under-utilized physical assets, possibly for money. In a broader sense, the sharing economy also includes peer-to-peer services (Uber, Lending Club, Taskrabbit, Helpling), product-service systems (Zipcar, Philips lighting) and redistribution markets (eBay, freecycling groups on Facebook) (Botsman and Rogers 2010). Sharing practices are certainly not new, but the phenomenon is showing explosive growth concomitant with the advent of Internet platforms. For instance, Airbnb offers more than 1 million houses, Peerby has 100.000 members, and Uber is active in over 200 cities around the world. Sharing potentially has a lot to offer to society: it promotes the efficient utilization of physical assets, it reduces their environmental impact and facilitates new social contacts. Along with its rapid growth, however, the sharing economy has also come under fire. This criticism focuses in particular on unfair competition between platforms and regular companies, overrated environmental gains, the tendency towards monopoly and the erosion of workers’ rights (Schor 2014; The Economist 2015). In sum, sharing practices yield promises and problems, which only recently have become subject of scientific research. This workshop aims to bring together researchers from all disciplines and regions to discuss scientific research on the sharing economy. Among the questions are: - What theoretical perspectives (e.g., economics, sociology, geography, innovation studies) help to explain the nature and growth of the sharing economy? - What are the economic, social and environmental impacts of the sharing economy? - What are the business models in the sharing economy and why do some succeed and others do not? - What are the governance modes of platforms and why do some succeed and other do not? - How do sharing platforms disrupt existing industries? - How can peer-to-peer sharing in consumption be applied in a business-to-business context? - Why is sharing more popular in some industries and in some localities rather than in others? - What are the institutional responses across industries and across localities? - What are motivations and characteristics of sharing economy participants? - What do sharing practices mean for the new product design? - Is there a new role for consumers in the sharing economy? - What is the relationship between the sharing economy and sustainability transitions? - Are we observing fundamentally new ways of innovation in the sharing economy (open innovation, grassroots innovation, institutional entrepreneurship)? - Does the sharing economy prepare the way for new forms of capitalism? - How does sharing affect inequality in society? Deadline Send in your full paper or extended abstract (750-1000 words) to Koen Frenken <k.frenken(a)uu.nl> before March 15, 2015. You will be notified about acceptance before April 1st, 2015. Keynotes Juliet Schor (Boston College) and Susan Shaheen (UC Berkeley) Scientific Committee Koen Frenken (Utrecht University & Lund University), Juliet Schor (Boston College), Susan Shaheen (UC Berkeley), Bernhard Truffer (EAWAG & Utrecht University), Wouter Boon (Utrecht University) Local organizing Committee Koen Frenken (Utrecht University & Lund University), Wouter Boon, Toon Meelen, Peter Pelzer (all Utrecht University) Special issue We envisage the publish a selection of papers in a special issue. free ebook can be obtained through Elias Crim in cc, Michel ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Elias Crim, Solidarity Hall <elias.crim(a)solidarityhall.org> Date: Mon, Mar 9, 2015 at 8:39 AM Subject: final PDF of Radically Catholic--thank you for contributing! \ Dear friends: At last! We're attaching here a PDF of the final version of the new anthology, Radically Catholic in the Age of Francis. As you probably know, it's the first title from Solidarity Hall Publishing--and we're very pleased that you are a part of it. The ebook will shortly be available (probably for $1, since we'd like a wide circulation) on Amazon and (via CreateSpace) in a print-on-demand version, for those of us who still like real books. If you'd like to forward the PDF to friends or associates, please feel free--we're publishing it under a Creative Commons license and we're eager to give it as wide a circulation as possible. We'll also be sending the book around to reviewers near the end of this month, timed with the re-launch of the Solidarity Hall website and some expanded programming for Solidarity Hall itself. The latter will include more e-publishing: If any of you have publishing projects for which a Solidarity Hall Press imprint would seem a good fit, please let Daniel and me know. You'll be hearing about all these matters soon. In the meanwhile, many thanks again for your eloquence and--especially!--your patience.
