Fwd: Why Andrew Cuomo's Pollinator Task Force Won't Save New York's Bees

These problems of managed bees are probably connected to a general decline in pollinator species being experienced all over the globe. In the US the Federal Government has passed much of the responsibility for solutions to individual states. It has asked them to create their own "Pollinator Protection Plans". This buck-passing is not producing promising results however, as this example from New York state shows. The West needs to look further if it wants to understand how workers' self-organisation is developing in countries it too often ignores. Across the Global South, peasant communities are forced off the land to live and work in harsh and impoverished conditions. Inevitably, new methods of combating the spread of industrial capitalism are evolving in ambitious, militant and creative ways. Southern Insurgency will lead the way in examining these organisations in the contemporary era. Immanuel Ness looks at three key countries: China, India and South Africa. In each case he considers the broader historical forces at play – the effects of imperialism, the decline of the trade union movement, the class struggle and the effects of the growing reserve army of labour. For each case study, he narrows his focus to reveal the specifics of each grassroots insurgency: the militancy of the miners in South Africa, the new labour organisations in India and export promotion and the rise of worker insurgency in China. A result of intensive, dedicated first-hand research, at the heart of Southern Insurgency is a study of the nature of the new industrial proletariat in the Global South – a terrifying, precarious existence – but also one of experimentation, solidarity and struggle. ----------------- Praise for SOUTHERN INSURGENCY: 'The first book to theorise and examine the present and future shape of global class struggles. Analytically brilliant and empirically sound, it is a must-read for all who wish to grasp and understand the emerging working class in India, China, and South Africa. A superb portrait of the trajectory of the independent workers' struggle.' - Sushovan Dhar, New Trade Union Initiative, India. ----------------- Immanuel Ness is Professor of Political Science at City University of New York. He is author of Guest Workers and U.S. Corporate Despotism and Immigrants, Unions, and the New U.S. Labour Market and numerous other works. He is editor of the International Encyclopaedia of Revolution and Working USA: The Journal of Labour and Society. ----------------- UPCOMING EVENTS: Five Leaves Bookshop, Nottingham, 5th November, 7pm - ( http://on.fb.me/1NAve94) Ruskin College, Oxford, 6th November, 7pm Historical Materialism Conference, London , November 7th, 1.45pm – ( http://bit.ly/1ihorpB) The May Day Rooms, London, November 7th, 6pm - (http://bit.ly/1MTsLni) ----------------- READ THE BOOK ONLINE: (http://bit.ly/1LBPdmY) ----------------- Paperback | 9780745335995 | £16.99 / $28 / €22 Hardback | 9780745336008 | £60 / $100 / €75 Kindle | 9781783717101 | £16.99 / $28 EPUB | 9781783717095 | £16.99 / $28 PDF | 9781783717088 | £60 / $99 ----------------- Want an inspection copy for your course? The campaign is entirely depended on contributions from abroad since due to capital controls Greek citizens cannot use their credit cards to support it. Paradoxically paypal payments still work in Greece but still, capital controls have created a burden which make things very complicated for average people to contibute.
