Fwd: [NetworkedLabour] Birth of Thanaticism
by Michel Bauwens 20 Oct '15

20 Oct '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Örsan Şenalp <orsan1234(a)gmail.com> Date: Tue, Oct 20, 2015 at 12:47 PM Subject: [NetworkedLabour] Birth of Thanaticism To: "networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org" <networkedlabour(a)lists.contrast.org>, Discussion list about the WSF <worldsocialforum-discuss(a)openspaceforum.net> Below is a bohemian look at the empty part of the World, from the author of the Molecular Red. Unfortunately he fails to mention our role in all this. By our I meam those many of us willingly or unwillingly did follow the politics of intra-class warfare and serve one or other fraction of global ruling classes (for instance by subscribing merchantalist-keynesian green anti-carbon alternative globalization politics of Al Gore-Clinton-Soros sort). Although Wark masterfully delivers his rethoric of the darkness coming for us, instead of using his skills to build on hope what he serves by using 'antropocene' language mostly talked to anarco-slicon valley generation, and (still) postmodern individualist and market friendly anarcho-liberarian-avant garde artists and environmentalists. This momentum gaining vision however is a pushing harder on the other end, the war-lord capitalism, of neo-cons, as well as state classes of the Brics. So darkness and pessimism, what the author describes, might be the half part of the self, probably most of the people share. and here is a downloadable reader of the book: http://syntheticzero.net/2015/05/05/molecular-red-reader/ For a optimistic version I would suggest Paul Mason's latest book Postcapitalism, that was shared by Anna before. And a bourgiouse vision of hope, at least for his class, documentary verison of the Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GcL3a4WK6M In my opinion, war and natural destruction number one to avoid. Distributed and all encompassing capitalism is eally bad. Mason's project sounds better. But there is an open large scale forum like debate and collective building process is required. The real hope remaining is there am tended to believe: McKenzie Wark — April 3, 2014 I don’t know why we still call it capitalism. It seems to be some sort of failure or blockage of the poetic function of critical thought. Even its adherents have no problem calling it capitalism any more. Its critics seem to be reduced to adding modifiers to it: postfordist, neoliberal, or the rather charmingly optimistic ‘late’ capitalism. A bittersweet term, that one, as capitalism seems destined to outlive us all. I awoke from a dream with the notion that it might make more sense to call it thanatism, after Thanatos, son of Nyx (night) and Erebos(darkness), twin of Hypnos (sleep), as Homer and Hesiod seem more or less to agree. I tried thanatism out on twitter, where Jennifer Mills wrote: “yeah, I think we have something more enthusiastically suicidal. Thanaticism?” That seems like a handy word. Thanaticism: like a fanaticism, a gleeful, overly enthusiastic will to death. The slight echo of Thatcherism is useful also. Thanaticism: a social order which subordinates the production of use values to the production of exchange value, to the point that the production of exchange value threatens to extinguish the conditions of existence of use value. That might do as a first approximation. Bill McKibben has suggested that climate scientists should go on strike. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its 2013 report recently. It basically says what the last one said, with a bit more evidence, more detail, and worse projections. And still nothing much seems to be happening to stop Thanaticism. Why issue another report? It is not the science, it’s the political science that’s failed. Or maybe the political economy. In the same week, BP quietly signaled their intention to fully exploit the carbon deposits to which it owns the rights. A large part of the value of the company, after all, is the value of those rights. To not dig or suck or frack carbon out of the ground for fuel would be suicide for the company, and yet to turn it all into fuel and have that fuel burned, releasing the carbon into the air, puts the climate into a truly dangerous zone. But that can’t stand in the way of the production of exchange value. Exchange value has to unreel its own inner logic to the end: to mass extinction. The tail that is capital is wagging the dog that is earth. Perhaps its no accident that the privatization of space appears on the horizon as an investment opportunity at just this moment when earth is going to the dogs. The ruling class must know it is presiding over the depletion of the earth. So they are dreaming of space-hotels. They want to not be touched by this, but to still have excellent views. It makes perfect sense that in these times agencies like the NSA are basically spying on everybody. The ruling class must know that they are the enemies now of our entire species. They are traitors to our species being. So not surprisingly they are panicky and paranoid. They imagine we’re all out to get them. And so the state becomes an agent of generalized surveillance and armed force for the defense of property. The role of the state is no longer managing biopower. It cares less and less about the wellbeing of populations. Life is a threat to capital and has to be treated as such. The role of the state is not to manage biopower but to manage thanopower. From whom is the maintenance of life to be withdrawn first? Which populations should fester and die off? First, those of no use as labor or consumers, and who have ceased already to be physically and mentally fit for the armed forces. Much of these populations can no longer vote. They may shortly loose food stamps and other biopolitical support regimes. Only those willing and able to defend death to the death will have a right to live. And that’s just in the over-developed world. Hundreds of millions now live in danger of rising seas, desertification and other metabolic rifts. Everyone knows this: those populations are henceforth to be treated as expendable. Everybody knows things can’t go on as they are. Its obvious. Nobody likes to think about it too much. We all like our distractions. We’ll all take the click-bait. But really, everybody knows. There’s a good living to be made in the service of death, however. Any hint of an excuse for thanaticism as a way of life is heaped with Niagras of praise. We no longer have public intellectuals; we have public idiots. Anybody with a story or a ‘game-changing’ idea can have some screen time, so long as it either deflects attention from thanaticism, or better – justifies it. Even the best of this era’s public idiots come off like used car salesmen. It is not a great age for the rhetorical arts. It is clear that the university as we know it has to go. The sciences, social sciences and the humanities, each in their own ways, were dedicated to the struggle for knowledge. But it is hard to avoid the conclusion, no matter what one’s discipline, that the reigning order is a kind of thanatcisim. The best traditional knowledge disciplines can do is to focus in tightly on some small, subsidiary problem, to just avoid the big picture and look at some detail. That no longer suffices. Traditional forms of knowledge production, which focus on minor or subsidiary kinds of knowledge are still too dangerous. All of them start to discover the traces of thanaticism at work. So the university mast be destroyed. In its place, a celebration of all kinds of non-knowledge. Whole new disciplines are emerging, such as the inhumanities and the antisocial sciences. Their object is not the problem of the human or the social. Their object is thanaticism, its description and justification. We are to identify with, and celebrate, that which is inimical to life. Such an implausible and dysfunctional belief system can only succeed by abolishing its rivals. All of which could be depressing. But depression is a subsidiary aspect of thanaticism. You are supposed to be depressed, and you are supposed to think that’s your individual failing or problem. Your bright illusory fantasy-world is ripped away from you, and the thanatic reality is bared – you are supposed to think its your fault. You have failed to believe. See a shrink. Take some drugs. Do some retail therapy. Thanaticism also tries to incorporate those who doubt its rule with a make-over of their critique as new iterations of thatatic production. Buy a hybrid car! Do the recycling! No, do it properly! Separate that shit! Again, its reduced to personal virtue and responsibility. Its your fault that thanaticism wants to destroy the world. Its your fault as a consumer, and yet you have not choice but to consume. “We later civilizations… know too that we are mortal,” Valery said in 1919. At that moment, after the most vicious and useless war hitherto, such a thing could appear with some clarity. But we lost that clarity. And so: a modest proposal. Let’s at least name the thing after its primary attribute. This is the era of the rule of thanaticism: the mode of production of non-life. Wake me when its over. _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://commonstransition.org P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: The Uber Problem, Anne-Marie Slaughter's book
by Michel Bauwens 20 Oct '15

20 Oct '15

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <douglas(a)rushkoff.com> Date: Tue, Oct 20, 2015 at 7:41 PM Subject: The Uber Problem, Anne-Marie Slaughter's book To: rushkoff(a)simplelists.com I've responded to two brilliant women's pieces this week. Susan Crawford wrote about Uber on Medium - calling attention to the way it promotes certain private agendas but represses other more civic ones. After reading Tim O'Reilly's defense of Uber's impact, I thought I should explain how Uber's problems really result from what the company is "optimizing" for. Then, I happened to begin reading Anne-Marie Slaughter's new book "Unfinished Business" on men, women, careerism, and family - and it struck me both personally and as a real-world case study on the themes of Present Shock. So both of my responses are below. I really am hoping to write you a couple of times a week. There's a whole lot going on right now in the world and the media that deserves explanation and analysis; I just have to get myself into a new weekly rhythm between writing, speaking, teaching, and parenting. Still, like the title of my piece on Slaughter's book, there's something to be said for accepting that "You Can't Have it All." I'll in Chicago later this week keynoting the Vision Critical conference. Looks like a good gathering on big data, but - with a ticket price of a few hundred bucks - more for people with expense accounts than regular folks. I'm speaking at a free conference on Platform Cooperatives at the New School in NYC on November 13-14, closing out the event with a speech and discussion with one of my favorite humans ever, Astra Taylor. More soon, d -- UBER My problem with Uber all along has been that it’s optimized for a really specific utility, but at the expense of others. It’s a bit like online universities, which offer courses isolated from the fabric of education or a learning community. That’s the nature of any digital business: you get what you program for, but lose everything else — and sometimes it doesn’t come back. Remember what Clearchannel did to the FM dial? They bought it all up, and replaced local stations and deep music knowledge with long-distance, computer-generated play lists. It was all excused as free market capitalism; thanks to VC they had more money, so they were entitled to purchase the landscape. Eventually, the non-local Clearchannel FM stations proved they weren’t profitable enough to sustain the company’s valuation, so Clearchannel began selling them. But the institutional knowledge enjoyed by those original FM stations was gone. Uber may be of great utility in the limited frame of providing low-cost rides for people with iPhones. But it does not serve any of the other functions that a local taxi service does. Meanwhile, its programmed not just to provide rides, but to take out competition. It is a platform monopoly in the making. This is because it cannot support it’s multi-billion-dollar valuation by being a ride broker. Uber needs to create a platform monopoly so that it can leverage into other verticals, from logistics to self-driving cars. If anything, Uber’s drivers are the R&D for Uber’s driverless future. They are spending their labor and capital investments (cars) on their own future unemployment. And even that would be okay, if they were shareholders in Uber capable of participating in those future profits — but it’s not a worker-owned cooperative at all. As every economist since Adam Smith and before has known, the factors of production are land, labor, and capital — and sometimes entrepreneurial effort. But the current digital economy rewards only capital, and acts as if acknowledging the contributions of land and labor were a communist, regulatory plot. The people providing the labor and the communities providing the territory for Uber’s operations deserve an equal say in the way the company works, and revenues the company earns. ---- You Can't Have it All Douglas Rushkoff (CNN)Technology has always been about choice: Fire allowed us to choose to live in colder climates. Electric lighting offered us the choice to read at night. Drugs give us the freedom to choose stressful, self-destructive lifestyles. And digital technology gives us the ability to do more than one thing at the same time -- or at least it feels that way. In Anne-Marie Slaughter's provocatively commonsensical new book, "Unfinished Business: Women, Men, Work, Family," she's not concerned with the digital at all, but the problem she's pointing to is a form of its multitasking ethos writ large: the way women and men, but women in particular, must prioritize (that is, juggle) career and family. In stark opposition to the can-do feminism embraced by some of today's C-suite female superstars, Slaughter makes the simple but undeniably realistic case for lowering our expectations. The idea of parents perfectly balancing family duties so they can prioritize their careers equally just doesn't work in practice, says Slaughter. "The problem is that 'fifty-fifty' is just too pat. Life rarely works out that way. And it's much harder to be honest about what it really takes." As a result, we must abandon the notion that anyone -- man or woman -- can fully dedicate themselves to both family and career at the same time. "We often cannot control the fate of our career and family; insisting that we can obscures the deeper structures and forces that shape our lives and deflects attention from the larger changes that must be made." Sadly, perhaps, one parent will end up doing more parenting and miss out on career opportunities, while the other will miss out on some family joys, but end up higher on the corporate ladder. This is more the problem of competitive corporate culture than it is the failure of individuals to find balance or to work hard enough. But our technologies, and the culture they spawn, would beg to differ. They want us to believe we can do it all. Facebook executive Sheryl Sandburg became something of a pop business hero for advocating that women "lean in" and do whatever it takes to strive for leadership roles in the workplace -- even if it means hiring people to nanny, tutor, and coach one's kids. Outsource, borrow, push, and strive. It's a pedal-to-the-metal approach to life and work that really only makes sense if you're thinking of your family like a startup you can "flip" once you've finished building it by any means necessary. The inclination for multitasking engendered by our digital platforms and their advocates has created the false impression that we can actually do everything we want, all at once. We think we can answer email as well while driving a car as we can at our desks, send sensible tweets while watching a concert, or do homework well while conversing on Snapchat. Yet every study so far has shown us to be less effective when attempting to multitask. Even when our subjective impression is of having accomplished more in less time, in reality we get less done, we do it with less accuracy and depth, and we remember less about it later. Doing more at once robs all our activities of the attention they deserve -- and the experience we deserve. Slaughter daringly suggests we stop compensating for the unreasonable and dehumanizing demands of corporate culture by running our home lives as if they were the offshore manufacturing arms of a conglomerate. And that we stop blaming ourselves for not being able to measure up to these false ideals. As she says: "When law firms and corporations hemorrhage talented women who reject lockstep career paths and question promotion systems that elevate quantity of hours worked over the quality of the work itself, the problem is not with the women." ---- This is RushkoffList, a monthlyish update and advance look at work in progress. Crypto 2.0 and DAWCs: Dawn of Decentralized Autonomous Workers Councils. By Rob Myers. The Anarcho-Capitalist future utopia of post-Bitcoin Crypto 2.0 systems meet the historical organizational forms of Socialism. Rob Myers brings the trustless code of Decentralized Autonomous Organizations into contrast with the very human activity of Workers' Councils. “Many of both Bitcoin's most vocal proponents and detractors agree that the way the cryptocurrency operates technologically determines the form of the economy and therefore the society that uses it. That society would be anarcho-capitalist, lacking state institutions (anarcho-) but enforcing commodity property law (capitalist). If this is true then Bitcoin has the potential to achieve a far greater political effect than financial engineering efforts like the Euro or quantitative easing and with far fewer resources. Perhaps variations on this technology can create alternatives to Bitcoin that determine or at least afford different socioeconomic orders.” http://www.furtherfield.org/features/articles/crypto-20-and-dawcs

Does the blockchain lead to more transparency?
by furtherfield 19 Oct '15

Does the blockchain lead to more transparency? By Annette Doms “Copyright has been a relevant topic since the development of the printing press. It grants the author the exclusive right to reproduce, publish, and sell the content and form of intellectual property. The copy & paste mentality of the Internet user brought chaos to the system. Blockchain technology should now manage the author and marketing rights in a way that is more transparent, completely free of Bitcoin and monetary background. The idea had its origin in the art scene. The Internet is a space without horizons or frontiers. It has changed our environment and also, thereby, our sensory perception. In 'the real world' we are confronted everywhere by people gazing deeply into smartphones: on the street, on the subway, in airplanes, in queues and cafés. Interpersonal dialogue is increasingly being conducted in the virtual sphere. How does the art scene react to new technological developments in arts? I asked Alain Servais (collector), Wolf Lieser (gallerist) and Aram Bartholl (artist.)” http://bit.ly/1jwMMsX
