Thanks for your constructive questions and comments Denis, they are much appreciated, If there is any part of your activity that would benefit from a closer association with p2p-f 'brand', we would be happy that you'd do some of your projects in that context, which would give you the occasion to join Loomio and its process ... it would be great to have a p2p psychology or relationality or commons group for example, have you seen the integral post-metaphysical spiritual group on fb ? Fwd: ID3 Publishes New Book, "From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond"
by Michel Bauwens 23 Aug '14

23 Aug '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: ID3 <contact(a)idcubed.org> Date: Sat, Aug 23, 2014 at 3:30 AM Subject: ID3 Publishes New Book, "From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond" To: Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> *ID3 of Boston Releases New Book on Digital Identity, Trust and Data* *From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond:* *The Quest for Identity and Autonomy in a Digital Society* Anthology probes the rise of digital currencies, self-organized governance and secure online identity ID3 <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&…>, the Boston-based nonprofit affiliated with the M.I.T. Media Lab, is pleased to announce the release of a collection of fifteen essays that explores a new generation of digital technologies that are re-imagining the very foundations of identity, governance, trust and social organization. The fifteen essays of the book stake out the foundations of a new future – a future of open Web standards and data commons, a society of decentralized autonomous organizations, and a world of trustworthy digital currencies and self-organized and expressive communities like Burning Man. A recurrent theme in all of the essays is the huge, untapped potential for self-organized, distributed governance on open platforms. The book was edited by Dr. John H. Clippinger, cofounder and executive director of ID3, and David Bollier, an Editor at ID3 who is also an author, blogger and scholar who studies the commons. The book is published by ID3 in association with Off the Common Books, and is available in print and ebook formats from Amazon.com and Off the Common Books. Among the contributors to *From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond *are Alex “Sandy” Pentland of the M.I.T. Human Dynamics Laboratory; Dr. Clippinger; former FCC Chairman Reed E. Hundt; long-time IBM strategist Irving Wladawksy-Berger; Silicon Valley entrepreneur Peter Hirshberg; monetary system expert Bernard Lietaer; journalist and author Jonathan Ledgard; and H-Farm cofounder Maurizio Rossi. More information about *From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond *can be found at the ID3 website, at https://idcubed.org/bitcoin-burning-man-beyond. <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753…> The book is available in paperback, Kindle editions and free pdf download. Themes from the book were featured at a recent conference at the M.I.T. Media Lab co-hosted with ID3, "The Ecology of Digital Assets: Identity, Trust and Data," <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&…> on July 30 and 31, 2014. The book explores such cutting-edge concepts as evolvable digital contracts that could supplant conventional legal agreements; smartphone currencies that could help Africans meet their economic needs more effective; the growth of the commodity-backed Ven currency; and new types of “solar currencies” that borrow techniques from Bitcoin to enable more efficient, cost-effective solar generation and sharing by homeowners. A chapter on the 28-year history of Burning Man, the week-long encampment in the Nevada desert, traces the arc of experimentation and innovation in large communities devising new forms of self-governance. In addition to explorations of self-governance, *From Bitcoin to Burning Man and Beyond *introduces the path-breaking software platform that ID3 has developed called "Open Mustard Seed," or OMS. The just-released open source program enables the rise of new types of trusted, self-healing digital institutions on open networks, which in turn will make possible new sorts of privacy-friendly social ecosystems. "OMS is an integrated, open source package of programs that lets people collect and share personal information in secure, and transparent and accountable ways, enabling authentic, trusted social and economic relationships to flourish," said Dr. John H. Clippinger, executive director of ID3, an acronym for the Institute for Institutional Innovation and Data-Driven Design. "The software builds individual privacy, security and trusted exchange into the very design of the system. In effect, OMS represents a new authentication, privacy and sharing layer for the Internet," said Clippinger " -- a new way to share personal information selectively and securely, without access by unauthorized third parties." ID3 was cofounded by Dr. John H. Clippinger and M.I.T. Professor Alex “Sandy” Pentland in 2011 to research new software systems to protect personal information and develop Open Mustard Seed (OMS). In addition to directing ID3, Dr. John H. Clippinger is Research Scientist at the M.I.T. Media Lab’s Human Dynamics Group. He is a serial entrepreneur, technology innovator, and Co-Director of The Law Lab at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University, and is the author of *A Crowd of One: The Future of Individual Identity *(2007) and *The Biology of Business* (1998). Professor Pentland directs M.I.T.’s Human Dynamics Laboratory and the M.I.T. Media Lab Entrepreneurship Program, and co-leads the World Economic Forum Big Data and Personal Data Initiatives. His research group and entrepreneurship program have spun off more than thirty companies to date. In 2012 *Forbes* named Pentland one of the seven most powerful data scientists in the world. ### *For more information about the book, contact John Henry Clippinger at johnhenry /at/ idcubed.org <http://idcubed.org> (or 617-306-8239), or David Bollier at contact /at/ idcubed.org <http://idcubed.org>.* unsubscribe from this list <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage.com/unsubscribe?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&…> update subscription preferences <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage.com/profile?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&id=6…> <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&…> Share <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&…> <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753…> Tweet <http://idcubed.us6.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753…> <http://us6.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&id=cac…> Forward <http://us6.forward-to-friend.com/forward?u=a1a095d0301b6e82661864753&id=cac…> -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: ZCommunications <no-reply(a)zcomm.org> Date: Sat, Aug 23, 2014 at 6:26 PM Subject: ZNet Commentary: Medea Benjamin: Beware of Exploding Gifts from Uncle Sam To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Is this email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. Medea Benjamin: Beware of Exploding Gifts from Uncle SamZ Communications Daily Commentary In a brilliant August 17 segment <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> of *Last Week Tonight*, HBO host John Oliver ripped into small towns that have equipped their police with war-like military equipment. One town was Keene, New Hampshire, where their military-grade armored personnel truck was acquired to protect critical targets –– like the annual Pumpkin Festival. Another was Doraville, Georgia. Oliver showed a wild video clip from the Doraville Police Department’s website, with a Ninja-dressed SWAT team going for a joyride in a souped-up armored personnel carrier, all set to a heavy metal song called “Die MotherF***er Die.” In a visit to Doraville last week, I asked Officer Gene Callaway why his sleepy town of 8,000, which hasn’t had a murder since 2009, needed an armored personnel carrier (APC). “The vehicle provides Doraville with a scalable response and ensures the safety of police officers,” he answered. Scalable response? Safety of police officers? Doraville has never been a crime-ridden town. “We at Doraville are proud to be ranked 39th in safest cities in Georgia,” Callaway himself bragged. It seems the most useful task the APC performed was pulling 18-wheelers back onto the salted lanes of Route 285 during snowstorms. Oh, and let’s not forget that “the kids love playing on it” when it rolls up to the county fair, Callaway told me. Doraville’s armored vehicle is a gift from Uncle Sam, as part of the billions of dollars’ worth of military equipment now flowing from the federal government to state and local police departments. Not only is it an incredible waste of taxpayer money, but it gets people–including children–accustomed to seeing military vehicles on their streets. Worst of all, it is causing police to act like soldiers, especially since one of the stipulations of getting this equipment is that it must be used within one year of receipt <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> . The Doraville Police, embarrassed by the negative publicity from their video, took it down (they insist that the theme music was unauthorized). Now on their website you can see much more benevolent images, such as three smiling police officers, one dressed as Santa Claus, with two young girls who are the recipients of the “Santa Pop Program” that pairs police with “less-fortunate children.” But let’s face it. Military toys, constantly dangled before the police at law enforcement exhibits and fairs, are hard to resist. And with the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security giving out this stuff for free, why not get some hand-me-downs? Doraville and Keene are just two of thousands of cities and towns throughout the nation that have successfully applied for surplus equipment from a federal government agency. Your head will spin if you take a look at this map <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> the New York Times published on August 21. It lists the counties that have received military surplus and the supplies they’ve received. The acquisitions under the Department of Defense (DOD) program since its inception in 1991 are valued at $5.1 billion, with $449.3 million given out in fiscal year 2013 alone <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>. In just the past 5 years, as part of Section 1033 of the National Defense Authorization Act of 1997, the Pentagon has given away “tens of thousands of machine guns; nearly 200,000 ammunition magazines; thousands of pieces of camouflage and night-vision equipment; and hundreds of silencers, armored cars and aircraft” to counties in every state throughout the country. While attention is now focused on the DOD’s program, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has a program <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> that is three times the size. This year alone, DHS plans to give away $1.6 billion worth of military equipment for counterterrorism, border security and disaster preparedness. Thanks to DHS <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>, every squad car in Fargo, North Dakota, has assault rifles and kevlar helmets and 1,500 beat cops in Philadelphia are trained to use AR-15s. DHS is also giving out money for a few dozen police departments to experiment with drones. When the Federal Aviation Administration opens US airspace to drones in the coming years, civil liberty advocates fear that the nation’s 18,000 police departments will be lining up for DHS grants to get their latest toy–a toy that has the capacity to spy, stun, maim and kill. This is already starting. In May 2012, DHS <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> began distributing $4 million in experimental grants to help local law enforcement agencies buy their own small drones, opening a new market for politically connected drone makers as the wars overseas shrink. The sheriff’s department in Montgomery County, Texas received a $250,000 grant to buy a drone, which in April 2014 crashed <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> into Lake Conroe and was destroyed. In 2013, citizens of Seattle pressured police into returning two drones they had received from DHS grants for $82,000. The drones were then pawned <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> off on the LA Police Department, which is now facing a citizen backlash to get rid of them. In the past, Congress has done nothing to rollback the handouts. When Congressman Alan Grayson introduced legislation in June to limit funding to the 1033 program, it was quashed by an overwhelming vote of 355-62, including 35 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus who voted against it. House Democrats reportedly voted against Grayson’s legislation because it’s “hard to say ‘no’ <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> to your local police chief when they are explaining to you how this equipment could help and in what type of situation.” But the killing of Michael Brown and Ferguson’s subsequent conversion into a warzone is leading to a critical discussion on racism and police power in America, and also to a new awareness about how our police forces have become more and more like the military. United States Representative Hank Johnson (D-GA) has plans to try again in September, when Congress reconvenes. He is introducing a bill <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> that would ban police departments from receiving armored vehicles, armored drones, high caliber weapons, gun silencers, and stun grenades under the Defense Department’s 1033 Program. Given the roadblocks to get any bill passed in Congress, though, it’s critical to put pressure on state and local governments to opt out of receiving military equipment. CODEPINK has launched a campaign for people to pressure their local governments to pass resolutions <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…> pledging not to apply for nor accept military gear from the Defense Department or the Department of Homeland Security and to decommission supplies they already have. Our police departments should not become dumping grounds for weapons makers looking for new clients to replace sales for waning wars abroad. Nor should they be repressive agencies that treat the public, especially black men, like enemies. Nor should they be militarized to deal with real or imagined threats of terrorism. Counterterrorism is supposed to be under the purview of the Pentagon, FBI, CIA, NSA and more. There is simply no reason for police to be armed like the military. As the ACLU says in its excellent *report <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>* War Comes Home: The Excessive Militarization of American Policing, “Our neighborhoods are not warzones, and police officers should not be treating us like wartime enemies.” The police must be made to “protect and serve” our communities, not wage war on the people who live in them. *Medea Benjamin is the co-founder of the peace group **CODEPINK* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>* and the human rights group **Global Exchange* <http://send.zcomm.org/wf/click?upn=9PHos1J7-2FD2Lw6jereECeNLGs3ocss1O2kcgD4…>*. That was a great explanation of the issues we are dealing with Kevin, and also thanks to the other Kevin C. for the moral support. In our community mailing list, dedicated to the development of the p2p foundation and its communities of engaged supporters, we are discussing a shift from pure open access platforms, which have often a questionable quality of discourse, to a managed commons approach, i.e. the creation of new layers of discourse for people who are aligned with our goals of social transformation, and not only in discussing various issues. It will be based on web of trust and cooptation tecnniques for those who want to seriously discuss transformative tactics and strategy. I'm about to write a summary of the current three strategic goals I am proposing for our actions (and in which I am already engaged in as are some others) You'll here more about this soon, but as I'm also travelling monday morning for 3.5 months, my online time will be severely limited during that period, Michel -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

the inacceptability of a culture of permanent personal attacks
by Michel Bauwens 23 Aug '14

23 Aug '14

Need we say more, now I have been promoted to a fascist that kills people: as willi wrote: "But what Michel do, and some followers, is a very different thing. It is a fascistic action. "If you are not my friend, or the friend of my friend, then you are my enemy". Then i kill you (based on the action level). " Enough already, it is not acceptable to simply ignore this, this has no place in p2p culture, For the record, willi is not my enemy, but of resolving political differences through personal attacks, definitely is, Michel -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

P2P Foundation List Moderation Notice
by Kevin Flanagan 23 Aug '14

23 Aug '14

Dear Willi, I do not make decisions to unsubscribe people from the list unilaterally. Many people have complained both publicly and privately about your behaviour. Personal attacks are not acceptable. In the case of this mailing list. Where an individual is not willing to abide by the culture and norms of the list then s/he are welcome to unsubscribe and move on. I am offering you here a opportunity to resolve this conflict. Here are the terms. It's really quite simple. If in the next 24 hours from the time of this email you are willing to reconsider your behavior on this list, apologize for that behavior publicly on list and will refrain from further personal attacks in future. Then you are welcome to stay. If these terms are not acceptable then I offer you 24hrs from the time of this email to unsubscribe. If you have not unsubscribed in that time I will exercise my responsibilities as list moderator and will do it for you. Regards Kevin Flanagan P2P Foundation Mailing List Moderator

by Michel Bauwens 22 Aug '14

dear Quiliro, let me repeat that Willi is entirely welcome to bring those views to our community , and at the same time refrain from slanderous and defamatory statements, of course, Willi has valuable points of view, like every other human being, but he also has duties to the communities he wants to participate in, and one of those is basic respect for the intregrity of his comrades, it's totally okay to critique someone, and to point to facts of corruption and power abuse, what is not okay is to attack david bollier for being in the activist for personal gain, without bringing any reasoned argument or fact to the table, to say the Allianza Solidaria is corrupt without backup, or to say that I'm an austrian economist, CIA agent or now killing fascist, without any proof. I have no personal animosity against Willi, I am divided between sympathy, as he does this again and again in nearly all the forums he participates in, and the feeling that this is exactly what it is looking for. How else to interpret the statement against Bollier, it was crafted in my opinion to precisely ellicit this reaction. So there is an engineering of victimhood in this case which is quite systematic and therefore must be an important subjective and pleasing function. The P2P Foundation, and the commons / p2p movement generally needs to move from open access platforms where anything goes, and which self-destruct precisely because they accept those that want to destroy them in their midst, as happened with Indymedia and many other great platforms, who listened to the kind of absolute arguments you bring forward, or the managed commons that build community through integrity. It's also a question of scale and time, our time is not infinite, and people who live from negative attention take a lot of valuable time from communities; in a real f2f community of course you need to deal with this differently, but online, you have to give the people the freedom to do their thing elsewhere, and bid them goodbye, respectfully, remember the only thing necessary is to apologize for insults and slander, and indicate that you will change your behaviour, it is not complicated to be or stay in this forum; opinions are not at state; nothing forbids you to learn from willi in private conversations, as does anyone in this community, that is the right place to put time in the complicated communication strategy, and if you privately accept slander and defamation, again, that is your good right; so I wish you the best of luck with it, I have now to stop this dialogue, we both said our piece, Michel On Fri, Aug 22, 2014 at 8:21 PM, Quiliro Ordóñez Baca < quiliro(a)congresolibre.org> wrote: > > El 22/08/14 a las 01:04, Michel Bauwens escibió: > > this is not about opinions Quirilo, > > > > it's about a systematic policy of defamation and disinformation, > > > > in my case, I was accused of being an austrian economist, while i am > > in opposition to it, david is accused of doing his commons work for > > political gain, allianzia solidaria in quito, the best coop we've seen > > in 6 months of study, was accused etc .. etc ... it is the standard > > operating procedure of willi and it degrades the culture of discourse > > > > stick to arguments, don't use freedom of speech to systematically > > attack the personal integrity of your brothers and comrades, > > > > you are free to do this, but not here, > > > > refrain from personal attacks, and there is absolute no issue of > > staying on the list > > Thank you for your response Michel. Anderson and Father T.A. Finlay. They persuaded communities and farmers across the country that by pooling resources and creating strength in numbers they could both survive and thrive. Globally the co-operative movement has more than 1 billion members, employs more people than global corporations and provides services for 3 billion people every week. With the withdrawal of government from the funding of social services, and the rise of austerity policies that have attended the current economic crisis, there is an urgent need for new forms of social care. Over the last twenty years, so- cial and solidarity co-ops have emerged as a new form of care that not only provides care to citizens but also reforms the purpose and direction of social care itself. Pioneered in Italy, social co-ops are a new form of open co-opera- tivism in which multiple stakeholders work together to provide a wide range of social services not only to co-op members but to the community as a whole. Tipperary has a rich tradition of cooperative enterprise and in recent years this has taken off with the community tearoom in Loughmore, the cooperative energy projects in Templederry and Drumbane, as well as the many cooperative initiatives at the Cloughjordan Ecovillage. This event aims to inspire a cooperative approach to nurturing sustainable livelihoods and facilitating new enterprises in our communities. *SPEAKERS INCLUDE * *Peter Couchman *Chief Executive of the Plunkett Foundation who which supports predominantly rural communities to set up and run a range of co-operatives.* John Restakis* the former Executive Director of the BC Co-operative Association in Vancouver, has a professional background in community organising and co-op development and is the author of “Humanizing the Economy – Co-operatives in the Age of Capital’. *Angela Espinosa* a Colombian academic focused on issues of complexity management and self-organisation with applications in cooperative management. *Michel Bauwens* a Belgian Peer-to-Peer theorist and an active writer, researcher and speaker on the subject of technology, culture and business innovation.. *Jon Walker* a UK-based proponent of the Viable Systems Model, an organisation tool used by cooperatives and communities. *Mary Fogarty & Maeve O’Hair* the women who set up Loughmore Co-operative Shop and Tearooms. *And many other cooperative and community activists involved in community farming and energy projects, food distribution and processing and cooperative housing. * ------------------------------------------------ Davie Philip *Community Resilience Programme * *Cultivate Living & Learning* Cloughjordan Ecovillage, Cloughjordan, Co Tipperary.
