Gordon, you write <<I look at your blog everyday and i believe that it was not announced there. I did see it in a private note that you sent which which i thought also said it was cancelled due to the decision of the core group. I also recall that i have not seen any p2p blog posts in about 10 days.>> it was not announced on the blog, as that would defeat the purpose of not broadcasting but I did send you the same note privately, it appeared more discreetly on the wiki without any effort at spreading, just 'for the record' for those who want to know; we are still publishing 3 items per day on the blog, 7 days a week, 365 days a year <g> ; something might be wrong with your feed ? Kevin is in cc , and he may need technical details from you to check it <<but something that is not clear are you referring to the ecuadoran p2p team? or to key p2p people in europe? Or both?>> to the intl team of contributors to the p2p-f work, not to the ecuadorian researchers who are only more loosely associated with our network <<they don't seem to need to be fed>> apart from BG, who seems a loose cannon for them as well, they have made a conscious effort not to feed the controversy (though I do get pressuring private emails) Gordon, I am now also no longer responding to this controversy and the prods coming from you here, I think you know all you need to know; as I said, I regret to be the focus of your open letter, as the only person who actually challenged their practices publicly, rather than the focus on the do-ers of the deeds. Two quick reactions to Orsan and Gordon. First, thanks Orsan for acknowledging the importance of the multi-perspectival work we are doing. You mention the potential charge of 'reformism'. I do not consider my position 'reformist'. Revolutionaries were never against reforms and my ultimate goal is phase transition, i.e. overcoming infinite growth based capitalism, while at the same time being meliorist (as defined by William James). This means that, while the end goal is in mind, measures that advance the cause in any way, are seen as positive milestones. So I would call my position 'adaptive'. Revolution as classically conceived, as a violent overthrow of one system by another, I consider as organic events (even Lenin wrote one month before the russian revolution: "unfortunately, I will not witness the revolution in my lifetime) that are outside of anyone's control, (most of all the revolutionaries themselves) and mostly caused by the inability of the previous system to adapt. If you look at the 'bourgeois revolutions', you will see a wide variety of revolutionary subjects (the russian star who abolished serfdom, the junkers in prussia, with bismarck instituting the first welfare state measures, the english radical religious reformers, and so on ..) .. the classic one, the French Revolution, may have been the most violent and led to the restoration by Napoleon; regarding so-called workers' revolutions (they weren't), again, Russia led to Stalinism, probably the worst outcome ... My preference goes to the creation of maximally autonomous communities that engage in counter-economics, and produce social charters to reconstitute politics around p2p and the commons, as the athenians and free citizens of the middle ages did. The endgame is phase transition, but not waiting until it occurs, but instituting it through hyper-connected micro-scale initiatives .. scaling through scope, until we are a social force that can play at meso and macro-scale Regarding Gordon, to explain my position. There has been a collective decision by the core members of the p2p foundation, asking me to refrain from further negative reactions, and I will abide by it. However, our position is available on the wiki for those who search and ask, we are just not spreading it actively. My associates estimated that anyone who needs to know, is already aware of the logic of the flok mgt team. I regret that Gordon is focusing on me as a person in this whole affair Why an open letter to the person who challenged the abuse, and not to those that conducted the abuse. It seems to me Gordon is focusing on the wrong person(s). Dear Gordon, there has been no capitulation ; the decision is simply not to broadcast the conflict further at this stage ; the evaluation is and has been publicly available on the wiki for all who want to read it, via http://p2pfoundation.net/FLOK_Society_Project#Evaluation_by_Michel_Bauwens I will communicate you the names of the people in that meeting privately, as they have been subjected to a hate campaign (associated with attempts at bribery) themselves and now is not the time to have a red cloth in front of a bull .. They have not threatened me into silence but have rendered the work and life of many of our associates unnecessarily difficult and they all feel furthering the conflict is worth this derailment of their work ; I just respect that decision, that's all Have you ever thought that by giving so much negative energy to a small group you may in fact be feeding them ? They have been outed and the information is available in different sources for those who want it, There is much work to do, positive work, in which we are engaged in every day, conflicts are sometimes unavoidable but we have said our piece on it Michel <,Yes I know michel you have said that?. note the words negative?. positive reaction to the way you were treated are just fine you say there has been 'collective decision by the core members of the p2p foundation asking you to refrain OK who are they please? You will disclose surely > However, our position is available on the wiki for those who search and ask, we are just not spreading it actively. I am asking for it. It is generally regarded that something like this might well should be announced? if it was i did not see it al though I have a seen a draft of a assessment scheduled for publication on july 17 that never came out and another scheduled for the 19th that was withdrawn as a result of threats made against you. That i believe is the meeting you are referring to > My associates estimated that anyone who needs to know, is already aware of the logic of the flok mgt team. who needs to know?. well michel please who does need to know. Have the flokista spaNIARDS DIVIVided the p2p movement in two? Into those who need to know and those who don't. That is something you'd expect to hear from the pentagon not from p2p > > I regret that Gordon is focusing on me as a person in this whole affair no I am focusing on you as the leader and founder of p2p who has pledged to the community he founded that after taking ill considered actions and getting himself in one hell of a mess has now back downed > > Why an open letter to the person who challenged the abuse, and not to those that conducted the abuse. It seems to me Gordon is focusing on the wrong person(s). those who conducted the abuse have show they are not capable of rational trustworthy action. It is YOU michel who need to act with utmost integrity at this point and not let these "bolsheviks" threaten you into silence. You promised a detailed evaluation and the hyenas started to bray at your heels My complaint with you at this point is that you apparently won't defend yourself any further and you try to cloak your decision behind the shadow of a collective request of the "core p2p group" and sorry i don't know what such a group is. This collective request will likely turn out to be the most important action ever undertaken in the entire history of the organization that you have dedicated your life to building. Surely you will be more transparent about who the member are and the nature of the request?apparently it was thought knot capitulating would stand in the way of other more important p2p work. Hope that is not the first step down the slippery slope of the end justifying the means. You need to publish the evaluation because you announced it, as a matter of selfdefense, while under heavy attack, and claiming at the time that you would not be intimidated. Not only that, but after the mess, everybody is waiting for closure. If you don't provide close and you are not doing so then the rumor mills will be in full control. Not only of flok but also of your reputation. If you don't take that final step, the psychopaths will stand straight in their shoes and feel their power, and keep bullying everybody until someone else will confront them at some point in the future, take the heat, and eventually shut their big mouths, or capitulate as you area now very conveniently try to do - it was not my decision it was that of the core group enter another loop. Abandoning now will give them the impression that "they won". Abandoning your solemn word will also raise the question of whether people should trust you in the future. On the contrary, if you comply with your word, you will have closure for yourself, and for everybody else. Other people can then make their own minds about what happened, and you can safely disconnect from the conversation, as you will have said everything you needed to say. But for the opponents, things will become a tad harder to play with: they will be caught red-handed, with their own image and only their own reflection to fight against. At this point, they'd better just shut up and move on, for they stand on moving sands, and third parties will have the whole history to judge anything they would say. I am sick and tired of ecuador?. but I now have a portion of the history and i shall put it out in the open. let the florists come rabidly after me as you pointed out I am now getting to be an old man and i care about my own legacy than their threats. I stand on my record. You got into one god awful mess michel. Stand up in public and speak the truth. I am continuing to get new reports from ecuador. They aren't pretty and raise a lot of suspicions. Only you know exactly what Daniel promised you. bernardo may be threatening to destroy you if you don't shut up, but for gods sake please do not capitulate. Even if the truth is not pretty. Please tell it. What i am drafting is for YOU because i am working under the assumption that you can still be communicates with. Your Opponents have way over played their hand. We are hearing now that the presidents office didn't know about the folk project until the weekend before the summit. With 26 signature required to pay the bills that assumption seems rather absurd. There rate to many people with first hand knowledge to paste together something that safely buries this>> -- *Please note an intrusion wiped out my inbox on February 8; I have no record of previous communication, proposals, etc ..* P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

I replied in between lines: > > You mention the potential charge of 'reformism'. I do not consider my > position 'reformist'. Revolutionaries were never against reforms and my > ultimate goal is phase transition, i.e. overcoming infinite growth based > capitalism, while at the same time being meliorist (as defined by William > James). This means that, while the end goal is in mind, measures that > advance the cause in any way, are seen as positive milestones. So I would > call my position 'adaptive'. I understand the above and agree. In this sense I can admit being meliorist as well, yet my end goal can be different. With the reformist charge, I meant it can come by those preferring to use the old lexicon. From there your approach to partner state, and transformation of the state and transition to capitalism without indefinite growth engine [as Hilary Wainwright's 're-claiming the state' argument, or Tomasso's commonification of public services can be seen as 'radical democratic reformism']. I however liked to highlight that both theoretical, practical and techno-political advancements in the fields of p2p, commons,... etc. has given James' understanding of meliorism a new aspect. Today, you can in real time collaborate with agency that would in the past seemed opponent to you politically; like Phorudon and Marx (anarchism vs communism), Lasal and Spartakists as well as Lenin and Kautsky (Socialism vs. Social Democracy), as well as all the following generations of left and progressive fracitonalism. This made possible for capitalism to assert itself as an irreversible and immortal historical structure. > Revolution as classically conceived, as a violent overthrow of one system by > another, I consider as organic events (even Lenin wrote one month before the > russian revolution: "unfortunately, I will not witness the revolution in my > lifetime) that are outside of anyone's control, (most of all the > revolutionaries themselves) and mostly caused by the inability of the > previous system to adapt. If you look at the 'bourgeois revolutions', you > will see a wide variety of revolutionary subjects (the russian star who > abolished serfdom, the junkers in prussia, with Bismarck instituting the > first welfare state measures, the english radical religious reformers, and > so on ..) .. the classic one, the French Revolution, may have been the most > violent and led to the restoration by Napoleon; regarding so-called workers' > revolutions (they weren't), again, Russia led to Stalinism, probably the > worst outcome ... I see there are inevitable points of revolutionary confrontation both from above and from below, during the period like today; where crisis moments following molecular changes escalate as you describe, and there comes the point where conflicting class forces see no other way than violent engagement, thereafter winner takes it all and we jump to a new level of balance of forces (like quantitative changes come to a point of qualitative jump). What is the key in both times of revolution from above and revolution from below, both opens up portals for emancipatory intervention. In case there are visions and working communities on which figurative models can take clear ad broader form (like Occupy camps) so can be grasped and participated by larger segments of the society; so that further ideas, plans, programs and visions can be produced in a participatory and collaborative way [on how to deal with inevitable problems with holding and distributing social power, regulating social conflicts in egalitarian and just way etc.] emancipatory push would grow and it would inevitable trigger violence from rulers, unless it is unbearable clear that the mass is so big and decisive and they wouldn't stop. That is revolution to me, and inevitable. For instance during the Arab spring, Occupy, 15M, Gezi, Brazilian uprising, we felt deeply -not the absence of these practises and experience but- the absence of elaborated communicatable structures that can interlink existing local, national, global experiences, perspectives so on. FLOK's value in this sense, lies in the fact that it bears insights about a national level example which was worked about in relation to a state. > My preference goes to the creation of maximally autonomous communities that > engage in counter-economics, and produce social charters to reconstitute > politics around p2p and the commons, as the athenians and free citizens of > the middle ages did. The endgame is phase transition, but not waiting until > it occurs, but instituting it through hyper-connected micro-scale > initiatives .. scaling through scope, until we are a social force that can > play at meso and macro-scale about the above, that is really inspiring to see those communities like CIC, and CoopFunding and so important to support them in every way. so such communities, visions, experiments do not exist in the rural alone, as Holloway wrote there is a Zapatismo urbano growing, connect autonomies in the urban areas ans there is movement from urban to the rural.. In most of the cases, hacker class is approaching to workers and farmers. Like the Interference space will take place in amsterdam, sub-altern classes are gaining consciousness -some thing like 'we can hack the class-society'. As in case of Enric Duran, and CIC, guerlilla translation, telekommunisten, las indias, gunion .. we witness disobedient egalitarian ethical emancipatory innovations produced by rank and file class members. This is the workshop we are going to held in Interferance mid august: https://interference.io/wiki/doku.php?id=sessions:gnunion_global_networked_… so I like to stress again: as long as we are doing trans-level and multi-dimentional practice of community/network building and interlinking work (allowing empowerment of ourselves and all the nodes simultaneously), it does not matter that much what we have as personal visions, preferences, expectations, predictions, so on.. about the future and nature of transition. The previous organisational forms, like part, platform, block, front, did not allow such collaborative and egaliterian ethical alliances. Now it is more possible then before, not perfectly smooth of course. With the 'quantum-logic' I was reffering this new possibility. This is an outcome of the technological-communicational paradigm shift, and at the moment it works for the advantage of the ruled, yet it might not last long.

Transnational and P2P Commons Transitions
by Örsan Şenalp 27 Jul '14

27 Jul '14

The fact that following the EU elections the murdered civilians in critical conflicts like in Ukraine, Gazza, Syria, and Iraq rapidly increased, is alarming. These might be the last warnings for the approaching 'train accident', going to be caused by the elite in fight on the steering wheel. The models and systems of managing the status-Que does not work and as they are unable to deliver the new. The ruling classes leading entire world in to a catasptrohpe of yet another corrective war is inevitable. This situation is felt shared, yet not shout out. Yet it has re-flamed (again) the discussion and exchange of ideas and practises on the 'transition', with its revolutionary, reformist or synthetic (Refo-lution/REvolution) versions. To 'get it' this time is becoming more and more mortal in every second. So the question of solidarity, alliances, platforms, unity, front, blocks so on is back in almost every context without exception... It is not really clearly to some of us, where will fit the new and influential concepts like the Commons, FLOSS, P2P, collaborative, distributed networks, so on... I sincerely believe that the coincidentally overlap between the final summit of the very intriguing Free and Libre Knowledge (FLOK) Society research and policy-formation experiment in Ecuador, and the EU elections where some left wing parties did achieve relative success, yet not in comparison to the success of the radical right. This shows that currently ruling classes are losing ground. Yet does this also mean that the discourse' or 'transition' (backward) project of the right wing is more accessible and appealing to large portion of societies; then the Left currently offer in Europe? What have been learning from recent experiences, experiments, from bottom up, in the middle, from top down.... in terms of real emancipatory change, or change might help to make a real change... interventions and step forwards at all levels and from all directions, with the involvement by and engagement with actors that are potential 'peers', peer producers or collaborators, commoners of the 'commons transitions' as flos projects and processes? Are we able to vision and realise much brighter alternatives then the right-wing/conservative/fascist backward going > capitalist-revisionist > neo or post capitalist perspectives. After some re-reading and thinking through these lines, >Tribe>Community>Town>State>PartnerState>NonState>... I realised that P2P Foundation, although there are important issues to subject to criticism or discuss about, yet one need to acknowledge the immense contribution it made by collecting resources, supporting communities from variety of levels, and ideological political perspectives: Here are those, I think very remarkable examples of communities and experiences: 1 - CIC http://cooperativa.cat/en/ and the projects they are working on, especially this one:http://www.coopfunding.net/ 2 - Las Indias: http://english.lasindias.com/ 3 - Guerilla Translation!: guerrillatranslation.com ... and there are many more of course, not listed by P2P-F wiki, and I do fail to mention here. Yet good to see that all these work, above, collaborate with and supported by p2p-foundation. the below material collected here, is quite important, for the discussion on transitions and related questions like with or without state, in and out of the state, bottom up or top-down, before and after the state, with who and how, role of the market,... so on? : http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:P2P_Transition http://p2pfoundation.net/Category:P2P_State_Approaches since these provide variety of perspectives, and community experiences, from anarchists, to communists, libertarians, to radical democrats and new movements' perspectives... it is a flos resource.. open to use and contribute, modification. It is wort to engage in deep discussion, on these materials and information, without being harmful to each other, following hacker's ethic. As it was the case for the parts of the discussion sparked after the finalisation of the FLOK project in Ecuador. I suggested that this was a living reach experiment where we can learn a lot from. During the discussions at one point, critical questions turned back to Michel by those who are on the list, including myself, on the issues like 'the partner state idea', or about 'engaging with higher level politics and state' instead of focusing totally to grassroots empowerment and bottom up change. I looked into the 3 examples of communities given above, which are closely linked to P2P foundation, they support to and collaborate with each other, and realised that these are role, prefigurative models for Michel, and all three are visioning stateless and beyond capitalism situation being dominant and they are engaged in building it up right now in the urban environment, using floss tools and inventing all sorts of freely shared ideas, projects, practises cultures. On the other hand Michel himself openly express what he believes on Partner state, transition and alliances. What he writes and tells partly can be seen [in old political lexicon] as reformist. Yet he insist on both bottom up and state level change can be engaged at the same time. and P2P processes can play a key role in linking these to each other. These these are valuable for me to understand the role of advanced collaborative culture and tools in realising simultaneity and multi- levelness of political subjectivity, its logic, and its action. Those example communities are working in different languages, taking to broader communities, and are open to collaborations from variety of ideological or analytical perspectives on transition beyond-capitalism, and thinking-imagining stateless societies. ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Francis Heylighen <fheyligh(a)vub.ac.be> Date: Sat, Jul 26, 2014 at 12:28 PM Subject: My review paper on Stigmergy To: "Evolution, Complexity and Cognition group" <evolcomp(a)listserv.vub.ac.be>, Global Brain Discussion <gbrain(a)listserv.vub.ac.be> Here is the paper on stigmergy I just sent to the editor of a book for which it was invited. It is an update with some additional sections of an older working paper. It now provides a pretty clear and comprehensive review of the whole stigmergy concept and its implications. It should provide a standard reference on the topic, if anyone needs a good citation on stigmergy. It will just be a while more before we have the detailed publication data. That also means there will still be time to submit corrections, if need be: so, if anyone has any feedback, please let me know! Francis ------------------------------ Heylighen, F. (2015). Stigmergy as a Universal Coordination Mechanism: components, varieties and applications. To appear in T. Lewis & L. Marsh (Eds.),* Human Stigmergy: Theoretical Developments and New Applications*, Studies in Applied Philosophy, Epistemology and Rational Ethics. Springer. http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/papers/stigmergy-varieties.pdf *Abstract*: The concept of stigmergy has been used to analyze self-organizing activities in an ever-widening range of domains, from social insects via robotics and social media to human society. Yet, it is still poorly understood, and as such its full power remains underappreciated. The present paper clarifies the issue by defining stigmergy as a mechanism of indirect coordination in which the trace left by an action in a medium stimulates a subsequent action. It then analyses the fundamental components of the definition: action, agent, medium, trace and coordination. Stigmergy enables complex, coordinated activity without any need for planning, control, communication, simultaneous presence, or even mutual awareness. This makes the concept applicable to a very broad variety of cases, from chemical reactions to individual cognition and Internet-supported collaboration in Wikipedia. The paper classifies different varieties of stigmergy according to general aspects (number of agents, scope, persistence, sematectonic vs. marker-based, and quantitative vs. qualitative), while emphasizing the fundamental continuity between these cases. This continuity can be understood from a non-linear, self-organizing dynamic that lets more complex forms of coordination evolve out of simpler ones. The paper concludes with two specifically human applications in cognition and cooperation, suggesting that without stigmergy these phenomena may never have evolved. -- Francis Heylighen Evolution, Complexity and Cognition group Free University of Brussels http://pespmc1.vub.ac.be/HEYL.html
