Vince Miller on his forthcoming book about presence, crisis and culture (CAMRI seminar 10/12)
by Christian Fuchs 03 Dec '14

The Crisis of Presence in Contemporary Culture Vince Miller (Univ of Kent) Wed, Dec 10 14:00 UNiv of Westminster Harrow Campus Room A7.01 http://www.westminster.ac.uk/camri/research-seminars/the-crisis-of-presence… Registration: e-mail to christian.fuchs(a)uti.at In this presentation, Vince Miller problematises the notion of presence within a contemporary culture in which social life is increasingly lived and experienced through networked digital communication technologies alongside the physical presence of co-present bodies. Using the work of Heidegger, Levinas, Bauman, Rotman (and others), he suggests that the increasing use of these technologies and our increasing presence in online environments challenges our tendencies to ground moral and ethical behaviours in face-to-face or materially co-present contexts. Instead, the mediated presences we can achieve amplify our cultural tendency to objectify the social world and weaken our sense of moral and ethical responsibility to others. Such a disjuncture manifests itself in a number of popular contemporary concerns over privacy, ‘anti-social’ behaviour, and the problems of free speech and inappropriate disclosure. Vince Miller will suggest that the solution of overcoming such problems lies not in increasing regulation, but in more scrutiny paid to the software architecture of social media as the medium by which humans are ‘made present’ online, as well as an expansion of the notion of being/presence to include virtual data/presences, so that these may gain ‘ethical weight’. Vincent Miller is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology and Cultural Studies at the University of Kent, where he has research interests in digital culture and urban sociology. He is author of ‘Understanding Digital Culture’ (Sage) and is currently writing ‘The Crisis of Presence in Contemporary Culture: Ethics, Privacy and Disclosure in Mediated Social Life’, also for Sage.

Fwd: [opennetcoalition] Net Neutrality: France Is Playing The Telcos' Game
by Michel Bauwens 03 Dec '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: La Quadrature du Net <contact(a)laquadrature.net> Date: Wed, Dec 3, 2014 at 5:33 PM Subject: [opennetcoalition] Net Neutrality: France Is Playing The Telcos' Game To: opennetcoalition(a)laquadrature.net Themes: NET NEUTRALITY, FRANCE, AXELLE LEMAIRE, COUNCIL OF THE EUROPEAN UNION La Quadrature du Net – For immediate release Permanent link: https://www.laquadrature.net/en/net-neutrality-france-is-playing-the-telcos… Net Neutrality: France Is Playing The Telcos' Game *** Paris, 3 December, 2014 – Seven months after the historic vote in the European Parliament on Net neutrality [1], the Council of the European Union could soon bury this fundamental principle. While its inclusion in French law could be debated in the coming months, it is high time for the government to put an end to is doublespeak and supports an uncompromising defense of Net Neutrality in front of its European partners. However, in Brussels, the French government seems in tune with the lobbying of big telecom operators. *** On November 27th, nearly seven months after their predecessors historic vote for a true protection of Net Neutrality, the new MEPs elected last adopted a resolution [2] reaffirming this position [3]. In the meantime, the Council of the European Union – which as a European co-legislator is now in charge of the legislative file – has postponed its decision on the matter for lack of substantive agreement between Member States. While the Italian Presidency of the Council seemed in favor [4] of Net Neutrality a few months ago, its recently discussed [5] proposition seeks to undo the protective definitions of Net Neutrality adopted by the Parliament. It removes the guarantees of effective enforcement of citizens' rights by allowing the prioritization of “specialized services”, thus conforming to the demands of telecom lobbies who would like to make deals with the big online services (such as Google or Netflix) and sell them prioritized access to European Internet users. Faced with divergent opinions in the Council, Member States have decided to delay any agreement on the text, giving reasons to fear the upcoming regulation might be dropped altogether and that they'll stick to the dangerous status quo. It is in this context that Axelle Lemaire, French minister for Digital Affairs, announced [6] that the so-called "Digital Bill", scheduled for the first quarter of 2015, would contain a section on Net Neutrality. The announcement came as a surprise since Net Neutrality seemed to have been discarded [7]. But the position defended by the French government during the vote in the European Parliament last April as well as the recent discussions in the European Council raises serious concerns. Furthermore, seeing the minister for Digital Affair starting to use rhetoric elements usually used by operators [8] also raises fears that this bill is primarily meant to protect the interests of operators rather than the rights of citizens. The French Council of State's [9] recent report on rights in the digital environment is an additional source of concern, as it backs the the unfounded claims by operators that real Net Neutrality protections would undermine investment in faster networks. “It is high time for the French government to clarify its position on Net Neutrality, both at the European and national level with the upcoming Digital Bill. Last spring's large citizen mobilization and the EU Parliament's historic vote in favor of true legal protections for the free Internet must be fully taken into account. As ministers in charge of the file, Axelle Lemaire and Emmanuel Macron (Minister of the Economy) must put an end to their doublespeak and fight back the harmful influence of dominant operators on telecom regulation to take a clear stand in favor of Net Neutrality,” said Felix Tréguer, founding member of La Quadrature du Net. * References * 1. https://www.laquadrature.net/fr/node/8077 2. http://www.europarl.europa.eu/sides/getDoc.do?pubRef=-//EP//TEXT+TA+P8-TA-2… 3. Fwd: How to be a rock - from Doors of Perception

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Doors of Perception <mailing(a)list.doorsofperception.com> Date: Sat, Nov 29, 2014 at 1:26 AM Subject: How to be a rock - from Doors of Perception To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com [image: logo] >From John Thackara CONTENTS - How to be a rock - Leathershed Lab at Unbox - Talks - Publications HOW TO BE A ROCK Last month I spent a day in a small town of 2,000 people in Perthshire, Scotland, with the following group of people: a blacksmith; a book maker; a soldier turned master mead maker; an artist whose work explores how we interact with the ecology of the earth; a student of the ecosystems to be found in dry stone walls; a curator of artist-led walks; a man who helps youth hostels reinvent themselves; a botanist who specialises in sphagnum moss; another artist who makes outfits that disguise you as a rock; a public arts funder; someone from a field studies centre where one can see the Clouded Drab (a rare moth); a fiddler who organises traditional music festivals; a nurse who leads healing walks; a designer of natural golf courses; a raspberry farmer; an outdoor education provider; the tutor at a forest school; a felter and knitter; a man who ”hated going to the potatoes”; a breeder if ill-disciplined Hebridean sheep; a man who studies lumps and bumps in the landscape; a digital arts producer; a bare foot walker; a designer of water cleaning systems; a book festival organiser; and a countryside steward. Our task was to imagine new ways for residents and visitors to connect with the ecological and cultural assets of The Cateran Trail. This 64 mile (103 km) circular track, in the heart of ‘Big Tree Country’ in central Scotland, has no real beginning or end. It takes its name from the feared cattle thieves who once raided these rich lands. The burial place of Guinevere, Queen of King Arthur, and a setting of stones thought to be a Viking burial site, are both in the vicinity; so too, once, was the richest abbey in Scotland. Among the ideas we came up with were encounters in which people learn: how to be still; to perform as a choir on the Trail, or how to grow speciality Scottish chillies. One group proposed a learning farm; another, an apprenticeship in how to build a dry-stone dyke. This workshop was a warm-up for Cateran’s Common Wealth, a two year programme of cultural and ecological activities - at the intersection of active learning, creative place-making, and sustainable tourism - that begins next year. Clare Cooper, its co-founder, explained the background: “Some things belong to all of us: the biosphere on which we all depend; our cultural heritage and history; our language; our skills in managing the land; our myths and our musical traditions. The Cateran Trail exemplifies this common wealth. By connecting the physical presence of the Trail with the ancient metaphorical power inherent in path walking, and path making, we will revalue this shared inheritance and find new ways to sustain it for future generations”. Common Culture, UK <http://commonculture.org.uk/> LEATHERSHED LAB AT UNBOX On Saturday 12 December, together with Mansi Gupta, I’m running a workshop at the UnBox Festival <http://unboxfestival.com/> in Delhi. We will develop the programme of a Lab, to be situated at the heart of India’s largest leather-producing region, that will develop products and services that combine clean forms of leather making with direct connections between between producers and customers. In preparation for UnBox, the leather ecosystem of Kanpur – its people, skills, and cultures – will be documented in a publication and short film. Fwd: [opennetcoalition] "Right To Be Forgotten": Privacy Watchdogs Turning Censors of the Net

The Right To Be Dereferenced puts in jeopardy freedom of expression and access to information. By entrusting search engines and administrative authorities with the responsibility to arbitrate between the right to privacy and freedom of speech, the Court's decision worsens the dangerous drift towards an extra-judiciary regulation of the Internet. Now, these guidelines sanctify this decline of the Rule of Law rather than inviting the legislator to clarify the law in order to strike an appropriate balance between privacy and freedom of expression. If nothing is done, the CNIL (French DPA) will condone the private censorship of the Internet, increasing the confusion of the roles created by the recent law on terrorism [2], which already gives it authority over the administrative blocking of websites.” said Philippe Aigrain, co-founder of La Quadrature du Net. Fwd: I'm still here
by Michel Bauwens 01 Dec '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: <douglas(a)rushkoff.com> Date: Mon, Dec 1, 2014 at 5:07 AM Subject: I'm still here To: rushkoff(a)simplelists.com Sorry for the radio silence. I’ve been extraordinarily busy trying to finish my book on digital economics while also starting up a new Masters in Media Studies at CUNY/Queens. It’s all quite rewarding stuff, but extremely time consuming. I’m triple-booked most of the time, and scrambling to keep up. The one good thing about this is that it’s kept me from wasting time on my devices. A few hours of email a day is all I have time for. The downside is that I haven’t been as available to those of you who have been asking for interviews or some words of wisdom on everything from Ebola and Isis to Ferguson. I will get back into the swing of things within a couple of months, promise. Still, I’m learning there’s something to be said for not having something to say. In immediate news: 1 - The new Masters program at Queens is open for business: http://queenscollege.media tells the basic story. In short, you are all welcome to apply to the program or to take any of my classes a la carte as a non-matriculated student. I put the blurb on what it is about, below. 2 - I have been doing a very limited number of speaking engagements while I work to finish the book. They’re always listed at http://rushkoff.com in the right-hand column. Except for a talk at Yale on the evening of January 12, I’m not coming out until February when I’ve turned in the manuscript. I did a couple of talks this Fall in Europe for small groups of billionaires, which was extremely informative. More on that in my book. Suffice to say, even the wealthy understand the current economic order is unsustainable. 3 - Very exciting stuff happening with my comics and novels getting optioned for film and TV. Once I’m done with my book I may even have time to help develop them. 4 - I have done a few local talks this season that have been recorded and posted, one at an anti-TechnoUtopianism conference that Jerry Manders convened at Cooper Union featuring Langdon Winner, Ralph Nader, me, and many others. Also, this keynote at Hope College's Critical Issues Symposium, entitled “Who is On Team Human? Programming the Future, with People in Mind.” Link to video is here: https://www.youtube.com/embed/gkwxseSc1Uk?modestbranding=1&rel=0&fs=1 5 - I am hoping to write a paper and deliver a talk about Loomio.org, the General-Assembly-style consensus-building platform that is helping groups like Podemos organize. That’d be at a conference called Circuits of Struggle run by the Union for Democratic Communications, in Canada in May. Could be a good time, and Astra Taylor will be doing the keynote. Anyway, back to work for me. Here’s the announcement about the new Media Studies opportunity. More soon, I promise. QUEENS COLLEGE: A NEW MASTERS IN MEDIA STUDIES Queens College, a mission-driven institution with a strong history of public service, has launched a new kind of graduate Media Studies program, uniquely positioned at the cross section of critical theory and social justice. We are a community of world-renowned scholars and practitioners working together to test our ideas, sharpen our critical faculties, develop our research, and engage more purposefully and effectively with the world around us. The Media Studies community at Queens College works under the assumption that media is no longer a particular vocation but the landscape in which our society is developing. Its impact and effects are far-reaching, yet little understood - especially by those creating the content and building the platforms on which we all depend. This program is meant to restore human agency and conscious intervention to the study and practice of media and media arts, with a particular focus on activism, environmentalism, the political economy, and social change. The Masters Program offers a continually evolving curriculum, directed by the lines of inquiry and developing practice of its ever-changing cadre of students. After receiving a grounding in media archaeology and research practice, students choose from a wide range of special topics from both within our program and the entire CUNY graduate system - all guided by our faculty and directed toward the student’s research or project goals. New courses and colloquia are developed to address emerging student interests. A unique weekly schedule of seminars associated with each media course gives students the opportunity to engage frequently about their own study areas and projects with their professors. The program culminates in a Masters Thesis, which may take the form of a paper or, more likely, a real-world project. We evaluate candidates to the program based on their experiences and intentions, and particularly welcome applications from activists, NGO workers, independent scholars, current media professionals and artists, political, legal, and economic analysts, or others looking for an intellectual environment in which to challenge conventional understanding of the media in order to engage with a range of vital issues—from the environment to income inequality to gender issues to the impact of commodity capitalism.
