This new and different NETmundial Initiative has been organized by the partnership of the Brazilian Internet Steering Committee, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), and the World Economic Forum (WEF) [2]. This announcement has resulted in considerable discussion and concern amongst various stakeholders regarding the purpose, scope, and nature of the proposed activity or organization. The Internet Society Board discussed this proposed NETmundial Initiative in depth during its meeting November 15 – 16, 2014. As a result, the Internet Society Board first emphasizes that the main priority facing the Internet community right now is the IANA Functions’ Stewardship Transition and recommends that all organizations in the Internet community should be highly focused on effectuating a successful transition. The Internet Society remains fully committed to the September 2015 milestone set for completing a plan that will meet the criteria set by U.S. National Telecommunications & Information Administration (NTIA). With respect to the need for new groups, such as the NETmundial Initiative and its Coordination Council, the Internet Society Board reiterates that the Internet Society’s longstanding position is that there is no single, global platform that can serve to coordinate, organize or govern all the Internet issues that may arise. At its heart, the Internet is a decentralized, loosely coupled, distributed system that allows policies to be defined by those who require them for their operations and that ensures that issues can be resolved at a level closest to their origin. The ecosystem draws its strength from the involvement of a broad range of actors working through open, transparent, and collaborative processes to innovate and build the network of networks that is the cornerstone of the global economy.[3] Based on the information that we have to date, the Internet Society cannot agree to participate in or endorse the Coordination Council for the NETmundial Initiative. We are concerned that the way in which the NETmundial Initiative is being formed does not appear to be consistent with the Internet Society’s longstanding principles, including: - Bottom-up orientation - Decentralized - Open - Transparent - Accountable - Multi-stakeholder The Board has asked the Internet Society’s CEO, Kathryn Brown, to convene a dialogue within the Internet Society community. This includes Internet Society Chapters from around the world, Internet Society organization members, the IETF, the IAB, partners from the Internet technical community, and others. The dialogue should consider whether any new initiatives or groups are needed at the current time and, if so, to define the objectives for any such effort. In addition, Bob Hinden, Chairman of the Internet Society Board of Trustees has initiated a dialogue with the Chairman of the ICANN Board, given ICANN’s leading involvement in the NETmundial Initiative. The Internet Society remains committed to a vision of the Internet that is open, inclusive, decentralized and for the benefit of all people throughout the world. ------- [1] The I* Group encompasses the Internet Society, IETF, IAB, World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), Regional Internet Registries (RIRs), ICANN, and the regional Top Level Domain (TLD) organizations. [2] https://www.netmundial.org/press-release-1 [3] The Internet Society’s position from the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) of 2003 and 2005, is “Many issues cannot be solved by new, overarching structures at a global level but rather by building on today’s open, multi-stakeholder and cooperative processes.” And that the community should “…consider whether new structures will bring truly measurable, positive change to the functioning, stability, security and openness of the Internet.” (http://www.internetsociety.org/wsis) -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Interesting post: Distributed Identity
by Michel Bauwens 15 Nov '14

*Subject:* *[A VC] Feature Friday: Distributed Identity* *Reply-To:* "Fred Wilson" <Fred(a)usv.com> A VC <http://avc.blogs.com/a_vc/> Musings of a VC in NYC Here are the FeedBlitz <http://www.feedblitz.com/> blog updates for *gregbernarda(a)gmail.com <gregbernarda(a)gmail.com>* - Feature Friday: Distributed Identity <#149b0d1ad69c1641_0> - More Recent Articles <#149b0d1ad69c1641_304_recap> ------------------------------ Feature Friday: Distributed Identity <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/QKYsxOSfdBc/> <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/QKYsxOSfdBc/> Last year at LeWeb I talked about four areas that we are looking at closely to make investments in. One of them is identity. I said this at the very end of my talk: <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/QKYsxOSfdBc/> I predicted that there would emerge a “bitcoin like protocol” for identity. And we’ve been looking for that. One thing we realized along the way is that this could be built on top of bitcoin or another blockchain. And so earlier this year we made a seed investment in a startup called OneName <https://onename.io>that is building exactly that. On Wednesday of this week, OneName announced a bunch of things <http://blog.onename.io/decentralized-auth-identity-open-source/>, including our investment, and my partner Albert wrote about OneName at usv.com <https://usv.com/posts/onename>. Now many will say “well Facebook, Google, and Twitter handle that pretty well for me” and they would be right. But are you really comfortable with Facebook or Google operating the identity layer of the Internet? I am not. And I think over time less and less of us will be. But the answer isn’t another startup controlling the identity layer of the Internet either. The answer is a distributed ledger of identity that is open and not controlled by any entity. And that sounds like an application for a blockchain if there ever was one. I have cleared my identity on the blockchain and it is here <https://onename.io/fredwilson>. I have verified it on Twitter and Facebook and you can send me bitcoins through it. It’s not much today, but in some ways it is everything. Because everything can be built on this and our hope is it will. To date about 20,000 people have cleared their identity on the blockchain via OneName. My hope is that number will be in the millions within the next year. If you want do do that today, go here and get started <https://onename.io>. <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:QF3NFAd80Ic> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:iLyGD4w1c3U> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:qj6IDK7rITs> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:yIl2AUoC8zA> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:V_sGLiPBpWU> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:F7zBnMyn0Lo> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:KwTdNBX3Jqk> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:dnMXMwOfBR0> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:c2c20Nhstd0> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:m6Kt5AT5DWs> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:DLYy-l-dIDg> <http://feeds.feedburner.com/~ff/AVc?a=QKYsxOSfdBc:jsYxZidT23s:YwkR-u9nhCs> <http://p.feedblitz.com/f.share?_/28/http%3a%2f%2ffeedproxy.google.com%2f~r%…> <http://p.feedblitz.com/f.share?_/30/http%3a%2f%2ffeedproxy.google.com%2f~r%…> <http://p.feedblitz.com/f.share?_/16/http%3a%2f%2ffeedproxy.google.com%2f~r%…> <http://p.feedblitz.com/f.share?_/29/http%3a%2f%2ffeedproxy.google.com%2f~r%…> <http://p.feedblitz.com/f.share?_/24/http%3a%2f%2ffeedproxy.google.com%2f~r%…> • Email to a friend <http://www.feedblitz.com/f/f.fbz?Fwd2FriendEdit=304;391683;http://feedproxy…> • View comments <http://avc.com/2014/11/feature-friday-distributed-identity/#comments> • Track comments <http://www.feedblitz.com/f/f.fbz?Track=http%3a%2f%2favc.com%2f2014%2f11%2ff…> • More Recent Articles <http://www.feedblitz.com/f/f.fbz?goto=304> - The First Law Of Internet Physics <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/IBP-0ejbjYI/> - Book Recommendation: The People’s Platform <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/wx1Hob-Blds/> - Internet Freedom <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/QnqoDA9a4ZQ/> - Messing With A Competitor’s Fundraising <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/f9v0TkluKIE/> - All Or Nothing vs Keep What You Raise <http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/AVc/~3/HtSnFgDJDLk/> ------------------------------ *Click here to safely unsubscribe <http://www.feedblitz.com/f/f.fbz?EmailRemove=_18719069%7c304%7c6de338971d67…> from "AVC." Fwd: The elephant in the room
by Michel Bauwens 15 Nov '14

15 Nov '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Charlie Wood <350l(a)350.org> Date: Sat, Nov 15, 2014 at 2:03 PM Subject: The elephant in the room To: Bauwens Michel <michelsub2004(a)gmail.com> Dear friend, This week, just weeks after the largest climate mobilisation ever, the world's two biggest polluters -- the United States and China -- announced their most ambitious climate action yet. *That is not a coincidence: it's a sign that our pressure is working, and that we need to apply much more.* The emissions of China and the US have been used by governments around the world as an excuse to dodge their own responsibilities. But this new agreement leaves these governments with nowhere left to hide and opens the door for real progress from global governments.* Right now, world leaders are converging on Australia for the G20 leaders summit and we have momentum on our side.* But Tony Abbott, Australia’s conservative Prime Minister and host of the G20, is refusing to allow a meaningful discussion of climate change at the G20. Climate change is the elephant in the room and Tony Abbott is asking the G20 to ignore it. *Send a message to Tony Abbott and tell him that he needs to get out of the way of climate action at the G20 and put climate change back on the agenda. <http://act.350.org/go/6426?t=1&akid=5573.360134.6wiK4Y>* The world is ready to act. Most countries want to talk about climate change but Australia’s climate denying government is using their position as President to block discussion. We are not going to let one politician block discussion on climate change get off easy. Put the pressure on Tony Abbott to stop blocking discussion at the G20 and get out of the way of real climate action. <http://act.350.org/go/6426?t=2&akid=5573.360134.6wiK4Y> There is plenty that the G20 could talk about when it comes to climate action. G20 countries are wasting US $88 billion a year just to help fossil fuel companies find *new* fossil fuel reserves, despite numerous warnings from scientists that we need to leave the fossil fuels we already know about in the ground. With the new agreement between the US and China, now is the time for the G20 to commit to ending fossil fuel subsidies and taking steps towards real action on climate change. But unless Tony Abbott lets them talk about it, no commitments will be made. *Keep the pressure on Tony Abbott. Tell him to get out of the way of real progress. <http://act.350.org/go/6426?t=3&akid=5573.360134.6wiK4Y>* Regards, Charlie Wood for the whole 350.org team. ------------------------------ 350.org <http://350.org?akid=5573.360134.6wiK4Y> is building a global climate movement. Fwd: Next Week: Geneva Internet Platform
by Michel Bauwens 14 Nov '14

14 Nov '14

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Seth Johnson <seth.p.johnson(a)gmail.com> Date: Sat, Nov 15, 2014 at 4:39 AM Subject: Next Week: Geneva Internet Platform http://giplatform.org/gic The Geneva Internet Conference (GIC) will address critical issues, gaps, and future developments in Internet governance (IG) and digital politics. The conference will provide a neutral and inclusive space for debates as it paves the way to 2015, building on the main events and developments in 2014, including announcement of the transition of the IANA oversight of Internet functions, NETmundial and the Internet Governance Forum. Registrations to attend the conference in situ in Geneva are now closed. You may still participate online. Please check "Remote participation" tab for more info. Programme includes two "fathers of the Internet" -- Bob Kahn and Louis Pouzin: DAY ZERO – 17 November 2014 14.00 ‒ 17.00 Introduction to Internet governance (pre-conference workshop) - Auditorium Kreuzel 17.30 ‒ 19.30 Keynote address by Fadi Chehadé, President and Chief Executive Officer, ICANN (Auditorium de Mello) Inauguration of Geneva Digital Landscape IG 360° followed by a reception - WMO Attic DAY ONE – 18 November 2014 The Internet governance landscape 09.30 ‒ 10.00 Welcome and opening remarks (Salle Obasi) Amb. Jürg Lauber, Head of Division, UN and International Organisations Division, Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs Ruedi Noser, National Counselor, President of ICT Switzerland and the initiators of the Geneva Internet Platform 10.00 ‒ 11.00 FORUM: One Internet – many policy angles (Salle Obasi) Malcolm Johnson, Deputy Secretary-General elect & Director, Telecommunication Standardization Bureau, ITU Yi Xiaozhun, Deputy Director General, WTO Flavia Pansieri, Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, OHCHR Christian Wichard, Deputy Director-General, Global Issues Sector, WIPO Preserving one Internet involves different policy processes. More than 50% of global Internet policy is discussed and decided on in Geneva: telecom infrastructure, human rights, e-commerce, digital intellectual property are just a few of the areas. This high-level panel will discuss different policy angles, and ways in which cross-cutting Internet policy can be developed. High officials from the ITU, the WTO, and WIPO will discuss potential synergies among their activities of the relevance for the Internet. 11.30 ‒ 13.00 FORUM: Mapping the Internet governance landscape ‒ actors, processes, and issues (Salle Obasi) Moderator: Jovan Kurbalija, DiploFoundation and GIP Louis Pouzin, expert in computer communications (one of the fathers of the Internet) William J. Drake, International Fellow and Lecturer, University of Zurich & Chair, Noncommercial Users Constituency, ICANN Rinalia Abdul Rahim, Managing Director, Compass Rose Sdn Bhd & Member of the Board of Directors, ICANN Khaled Fattal, Group Chairman, Multilingual Internet Group, London Internet governance is a highly complex policy space with hundreds of actors addressing more than 50 IG issues through more than 1000 mechanisms (conventions, standards, events, experts groups, etc.). The more Internet impacts all spheres of our life, the more complex and broader Internet governance will become. Very few actors, if any, have a full grasp of the complexity of IG. The risk of incomprehensible IG could lead towards the marginalisation of some actors and, ultimately, a risk for legitimacy of Internet governance. In addition, good mapping of Internet governance will increase the efficiency of policy processes and reduce duplicate efforts in various forums. The session will discuss the challenge of mapping Internet governance and ways and means of making it more accessible to all concerned. The panellists will address the following issues: What does Internet governance include? What are the criteria for mapping Internet governance issues and their relevance? How can we create easier access to Internet governance? If a one-stop shop is a solution, what functions should it have and how should it be organised? 14.30 ‒ 16.00 Same issues, different perspectives: overcoming policy silos in privacy and data protection (Auditorium de Mello) Moderator: Vladimir Radunovic, DiploFoundation and GIP Brian Trammell, Communication Systems Group, ETH Zurich Nick Ashton-Hart, Executive Director, Internet &Digital Ecosystem Alliance (IDEA) Amb. Thomas Hajnoczi, Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations, Geneva Carly Nyst, Legal Director, Privacy International The omnipresence of the Internet in modern society makes most Internet policy issues transversal. For example, cybercrime cannot be addressed only as a security issue or e-commerce only as trade issue. Yet, a transversal approach is more an exception than a common practice in Internet governance. This session will discuss ways and means of introducing a transversal approach using the example of data protection and privacy, addressed from standardisation, human rights, diplomatic, security, and business perspectives. Legal framework, jurisdiction, and enforcement in Internet governance (Salle Obasi) Moderator: Jacques de Werra,Professor, Law School, University of Geneva Rolf Weber, Professor, University of Zurich Joe Cannataci, Professor, University of Groningen Mira Burri, Senior Research Fellow, World Trade Institute & Lecturer, University of Bern Konstantinos Komaitis, Policy Advisor, Internet Society Xianhong Hu, Program Specialist, Division for Freedom of Expression and Media Development, UNESCO The Internet does not function in a legal vacuum. Increasingly, it is perceived that what is (il)legal offline is (il)legal online. The UN Human Rights Council made this principle explicit: ‘The same rights that people have offline must also be protected online.’ Thus, most Internet issues are already regulated in the offline environment (e.g. jurisdiction, copyright, trademark, labour law). The main challenge is how to apply these rules to Internet transactions, particularly in view of transborder aspects and the speed of Internet activities. At the preparatory seminar for the Conference, the idea of legal innovation with wisdom was suggested. It means that there is a need for innovation for the Internet, which should not ignore the wisdom of the legal profession gathered over centuries in regulating conflicts and ensuring order in human society. The session will focus on the following questions: Is there any area where the ‘offline/online principle’ cannot be applied and there will be a need for new substantive rules for the Internet? What are the specific challenges for applying existing legal rules on the Internet? How do we innovate with wisdom? What are the possible innovations? Inclusion in digital policy: e-participation and capacity development (Auditorium Kreuzel) Moderator: Pete Cranston, co-director, Euforic Services, Oxford Chengetai Masango, Programme and Technology Manager, Secretariat of the Internet Governance Forum Ginger Paque, Director of IG Programmes, DiploFoundation Anders Norsker, Head of Information Services, ITU (tbc) Marília Maciel, Researcher and Coordinator, Center for Technology and Society, FGV Brazil Anne-Rachel Inné, Vice-President, Government Engagement, ICANN Inclusive digital policy depends on e-participation and capacity development. E-participation ensures participation of all those who cannot participate in situ. It is not surprising that e-participation in global governance is most advanced in the field of Internet governance. The session will discuss the four most relevant experiences in digital policy: the IGF, ICANN, the ITU, and NETmundial. The session will provide concrete input based on the following questions: What practical techniques are there for making e-participation more effective? How can we ensure proper synchronisation between two dynamics of the event: in situ (in the conference room) and remote (via e-participation)? How do we deal with different time-zones in e-participation? How do we ensure capacity development for e-participation? DAY TWO – 19 November 2014 The complexity of Internet governance: sustaining innovation while ensuring equality 09.00 ‒ 10.30 FORUM: How do actors cope with Internet governance complexity? (Salle Obasi) Robert E. Kahn, CEO and President, Corporation for National Research Initiatives (one of the fathers of the internet) Hon. Helena Dalli, Minister for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties, Malta Parminder Jeet Singh, Executive Director, IT for Change, India Marília Maciel, Center for Technology and Society, FGV Brazil Richard Samans, Managing Director and Member of the Managing Board, World Economic Forum With more than 50 Internet policy issues addressed in hundreds of various forums, many actors face difficulties in following Internet governance. Some governments, such as China, the USA, and Germany, have introduced cyber and Internet ambassadors as a way of covering foreign digital policy. Many countries started a national Internet Governance Forum in order to integrate the wider technical, academic, and business communities in Internet policies. For business and technical communities, following IG requires covering non-technical issues such as human rights (e.g. privacy). For civil society, in particular small organisations, covering the IG field is becoming very difficult. At the same time, due to the inter-connection of IG issues, many actors cannot afford not to use a comprehensive approach including technical, legal, and human rights aspects among others. Panellists will present different experiences in covering Internet governance and suggest some practical solutions. The session is planned to end with a list of concrete suggestions that should help various actors to deal with the complexity of IG. 11.00 ‒ 12.30 Aim for full transparency – accept exceptional translucency (Salle Obasi) Moderator: Pete Cranston, co-director, Euforic Services, Oxford Veronica Cretu, President, Open Government Institute (Moldova) Nigel Hickson, Vice-President, UN and IGO Engagement, ICANN Avri Doria, Principal Researcher, Technicalities Kari Tapiola, Special Adviser to the Director-General, ILO Transparency is essential for robust and effective Internet governance. It is particularly important in multistakeholder spaces that typically do not have procedural mechanisms to ensure procedural transparency and due process. While full transparency should be a default operational mode, in some cases a ‘translucent’ approach could be considered (e.g. limited public participation in deliberation with full publicity of results of deliberations). This session will aim to establish criteria for determining the level of transparency needed (e.g. full transparency with transcription, access to documents, etc.). It will rely on experiences from the Open Governance Partnership and ILO communities. Subsidiarity: how to make Internet governance decisions at the appropriate level, building on lessons learned from Switzerland (Auditorium Kreuzel) Moderator: Thomas Schneider, Deputy Head of International Relations Service, OFCOM Peter Gruetter, Chairman, Swiss Telecommunications Association Norbert Bollow, co-founder and co-convenor of the Just Net Coalition Michel Veuthey, Vice-president of the International Institute of Humanitarian Law, San Remo Hanane Boujemi, Manager, IG Programme, MENA Region, HIVOS While global solutions are preferable for global issues (e.g. IG, climate change), they are often difficult to achieve. After the failure of the Copenhagen summit (2009), the climate change community focused more on local, national, and regional initiatives. The same tendencies are noticeable in IG (most cybercrime conventions are regional, protests against IG policies are regional/national – SOPA, ACTA). IG issues should be addressed at the policy level which is closest to the cause of the issues (e.g. cybercrime) or the impact a specific policy may have (e.g. access, net neutrality). The main challenges will be to ensure that ‘policy elevators’ move both ways (up and down) among local, national, regional, and global levels. The session will also discuss the practice of ‘forum shopping’ (inserting policy initiatives on the most favourable policy level). Swiss academics and practitioners will present the country’s long experience in using subsidiarity principles. The panel will address the following specific questions: What issues could be addressed effectively at a lower level than a global one (e.g. regional and national levels)? How can we ensure synchronisation among different policy levels while avoiding the risk of ‘forum shopping’? Evidence in Internet governance: measurement and data-mining (Auditorium de Mello) Moderator: Vladimir Radunovic, DiploFoundation and GIP Aaron Boyd, Chief Strategy Officer, ABI Research Sacha Wunsch-Vincent, Editor of Global Innovation Index & Senior Economist, WIPO Eliot Lear, Principal Engineer, CISCO Systems Kavé Salamatian, Professor, University of Savoie, France Although the Internet is an engineering artifact, we do not have sufficient technical data of relevance for Internet governance. For example, one of the major problems in cybersecurity is the lack of data about threats and losses. Policy-makers and, increasingly a more engaged general public, are looking for data such as: the impact of digital innovation on economic growth; the quantity of digital assets and their distribution worldwide, etc. The session will focus on three main issues: Mapping of available data and measurement of relevance for IG Survey of data and measurement for specific issues. Techniques and approaches to improve evidence and measurement of relevance for IG. 14.00 ‒ 15.30 Lessons learned from other multistakeholder processes (Salle Obasi) Moderator: Anne-Marie Buzatu, Deputy Head of Operations IV, DCAF Andy Orsmond, Executive Director, International Code of Conduct Association Michel Quillé, Vice-President, International Forum on Technologies and Security Michele Woods, Director, Copyright Law Division, WIPO The different stakeholder communities remain divided over the legitimate carrying out and enforcement of decisions. Consequently, compliance remains a test case for IG processes. How can we ensure effective implementation and compliance of decisions, in particular those that require the participation of multiple actors with different views on legitimacy and accountability? Why did you see a need to adopt a multistakeholder approach? What challenges were you facing and how did the multistakeholder approach address them? What were the three main lessons learned and take-aways from the process, and what would you do differently? Drafting in policy processes: how can we best nurture the socialisation of policy texts in multistakeholder contexts? (Auditorium de Mello) Moderator: Jovan Kurbalija, DiploFoundation and GIP Richard Hill, President, Association for Proper Internet Governance Avri Doria, Principal Researcher, Technicalities Alex Sceberras Trigona, Special Envoy of the Prime Minister of Malta and former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malta One of the fathers of the Internet Jon Postel said ‘Group discussion is very valuable; group drafting is less productive.’ The more people involved, the greater the complexity of the process. The drafting process is not individual writing; it is highly social. Thus, ‘socialisation of the text’ is essential for successful negotiations. All involved should be aware of how the final draft was negotiated, what was included, and what was left out. Participants should know that their voices were heard, considered, and adopted… or not, accordingly. The panellists will address the following questions: How do we harvest and harness a wide range of inputs in the drafting process? What types of procedures are needed to ensure that the drafted text can have legitimate acceptance by most actors involved in the process? How do we deal with conflicting situations in the drafting process? Funding, accountability and trust in Internet governance (Auditorium Kreuzel) Moderator: Pete Cranston, co-director, Euforic Services, Oxford Markus Kummer, Member of the Board of Directors, ICANN Désirée Miloshevic, Senior Adviser of International Affairs and Public Policy, Afilias International Jean-Marie Chenou, Lecturer, University of Lausanne Funding, accountability, and trust are closely inter-related and are necessary for a legitimate governance system. Funding contributes to accountability, which in turn creates more trust in IG space. This session will address various approaches to fundraising in Internet governance. It will also discuss the question of accountability and trust. 16.00 ‒ 17.00 Closing session: wrap-up and concluding remarks (Salle Obasi) Philipp Metzger, Director-General, OFCOM -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

I don't see anything wrong with revisiting the arcology concept except that this seems like a return to the idea of the total design solution, leaving no space for the actual inhabitant to participate and no room for the free evolution cities need to avoid eventual dysfunction. This is very much a perpetuation of the professional architect's ideal of perfect and immortal design that is at odds with the reality of the modern urban habitat. So you might assemble some team of multidisciplinary professional experts to do development as a group, but it's still a hermetic process of master-planning that leaves the people who will live in this space out of the process and severely limits what they can and can't do in the future. The most important of the arcology concepts of Paulo Soleri was the one he himself so often ignored; the Linear City. The arcology vision of the future was one of miniaturizing the footprint of the built habitat to a kind of urban web, returning to nature the space we squandered on suburbs and the automobile, confining the human habitat to within a modest fixed distance from a select few transit routes, freely expanding upward and along their length but not outward. But the big monumental 'nodal' arcologies were not really intended to do that job. Indeed, they were never about population management as is so often attributed to them, functioning more as centers of culture than concentrations of population. Like other concepts of the Megastructure movement, they were intended to be a response to the Leisure Crisis once believed to be imminent with Total Automation. The primary arcology was the collective, web-like, Linear City that would eventually span the globe. In Soleri's vision, most of the population was supposed to live at a roughly outer-urban/suburban density in the Linear City that would incrementally subsume the few remaining high-volume transit corridors, internalizing them with the benefit of future electric powered transportation. Located at the crossroads of the Linear City's branches, the nodal arcology was to denote the geographical logistical and cultural 'points of interest' previously represented by old cities. He imagined the nodal arcologies as having limited lifespans because of their monumental nature and monolithic construction, being obsolesced, torn down, and replaced periodically, their populations and functions temporarily absorbed into the Linear City web which, unlike the nodal arco, would never become obsolete because it was perpetually adaptive. But as important as the Linear City was, it didn't appeal as much to Soleri's ego because it never needed the same gargantuan scale of structure, was more functionally generic in architecture rather than totally designed, more freely adaptive within its linear confines, and more under the control of its inhabitants. Later on in life Soleri did finally seem to clue-into the need to better promote the Linear City concept and more of his work began to emphasize this, but it was a bit too late. https://arcosanti.org/sites/default/files/images/LLC%20in%20Fall%207x14.jpg http://www.florence-expo.com/back/imgsup/id2789_img3_IMAG_2.jpg http://arcosanti.org/sites/default/files/images/photo110921d1.jpg http://www.ilgiornaledellarchitettura.com/immagini/IMG2012022216492725_900_… http://www.archinfo.it/glry/Paolo_Soleri_Sympa_gen_2011/27.jpg I often say that the future of the human habitat may be very much as Soleri envisioned, but without the giant arcologies because, in the digital era, they're redundant in the very context they were intended for. There will probably still be nodal centers of culture, but such scale of structure was never really needed and monumental structures work against the contemporary notion of a cultural cultivator. Culture wants a festival, not a museum or a cathedral. We still think about the city and the built habitat too much as a collection of buildings rather than a social landscape, a stigmergic living infrastructure, a 'backplane' formed by social and logistical attractors. So we tend to engage in over-design. It's like athletic shoes today. They're so over-engineered to an exact model of an idealized human foot that most of them never actually comfortably fit anyone's feet! We don't need urban bonsai. We need an urban permaculture. Of course the book looks like a propaganda pamphlet, but I think we should consider this trend seriously, and not dismiss it with easy jokes. We cannot dismiss these people simply by saying that they are paid by multinational real estate companies, or that they are lobotomized and/or evil. This is not the point. Of course "urban islands" (or "continents") in the wilderness sound to me like a nightmare - especially considering all we know about neuroergonomics, biophilia, nature-deficit disorder, etc. But possibly this is were the market is leading, helped by the rethoric of "green economy" (I guess that all the industry plants will be settled on Mars, right?). The authors of the book write down: "Our team is a group of architects, entrepreneurs and visionaries who believe that Vertical Cities are a potential solution to many of humanity's greatest problems. We meet regularly in Portland, Oregon. Our Mission is to create a healthy, harmonious, sustainable and dignified life for everyone through the emerging technologies of Vertical Cities." We should analyze again the urban future these people are preparing. Why they are doing it, their reasons, their scientific and technological ground, their urban and political ideology, and the reason why things like a "Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat" exists and is funded by somebody. They look like sharing the same old dream of LeCorbusier, just on a larger scale, where "les machines-à-habiter" become whole cities instead of buildings. Possibly, they reflected about the mistakes brought in by that model, and tried to solve it by transforming cities into (huge) buildings, and buildings into cities. The main reasons for a vertical growth seem the need for setting more building-free land, in order to preserve "nature" and food production and reduce human footprint. Thus the political praxis which should ideally be moored in a post-capitalist (hence post-state) vision of society, is seldom reached, and the movements are stuck in the morass of extremely limited actions informed by their purely normative and emotive thoughts about how the present society should function. The war-cry of justice is aired, millions take to the street demanding it, yet this ‘justice’ is rarely explained in terms of the real and the grounded. It is taken for granted that the state will be transformed from its overtly pro-capital avatar to a more radical one by this means or another because the movements want it to change: what is forgotten is that history has seen hundreds of experiments with such ‘changed’ states—each one of which failed in the long run, and led to a more coercive rule of capital. Also, today’s social movements are non-violent and democratic, which in reality means that they prefer working within the framework of parliamentary democracy, and where that is absent, fight for it. Once again, the history of the institution of parliamentary democracy is forgotten: willy-nilly, it’s ignored that historically—more so going by today’s neo-liberal situation—such democracy is intrinsically linked with capitalist production systems and the hegemony of capital in both our societies and polities. This belief in ‘democracy’ assumes a belief in the so-called democratic state—one guesses that this is largely due to the prevalence of welfare capitalism in the post 2nd world war era; it offered (to a greatly altered extent—still does in some parts of the world) mitigation of the more poignant excesses of capitalist profiteering in terms of glorifying and protecting labour, instead of brutally exploiting it, which in turn translated to increased wages for all, an all-encompassing social security net and so on. Though for the left, true democracy was only achieved when the state mutates to its socialist avatar, the institutional left operating within the democratic state systems started believing in it. In time, this naïve belief killed it—the trade union movements were the first victims. Capital mutated to the post-modern or the neo-liberal, the manufacturing sector was gradually dismantled and its centralized production processes disbursed all over the globe, and as to even the core rationale of capitalism’s being, its unbridled profiteering, it depended more on the little-understood and often obtuse hokey-pokey of speculations in the finance capital sector. Because capital mutated, the state mutated too, and the grand dream of a sustainable capitalism held perpetually in check perished—none but the government leaders and the international institutions comprising them remotely talk about it these days, and nobody believes in it any more, with the unfortunate exceptions of social movements. Among social movements, we do not include corporation-style NGOs which serve capital and help it in its corporate social responsibility tasks, or those which the state overtly and covertly floats or supports. By social movements here we mean only those movements and groups which critique the neo-liberal profiteering and the state’s mutated role as a crony supporting and facilitating that. _______________________________________________ NetworkedLabour mailing list NetworkedLabour(a)lists.contrast.org http://lists.contrast.org/mailman/listinfo/networkedlabour -- Check out the Commons Transition Plan here at: http://en.wiki.floksociety.org/w/Research_Plan P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Jussi Parikka <jussi.parikka1976(a)gmail.com> Date: Thu, Nov 13, 2014 at 7:52 PM Subject: The Anthrobscene To: Michel Bauwens <michel(a)p2pfoundation.net> Dear friends, here's the e-release of my little publication in the Forerunners-series: The Anthrobscene. It is a stand-alone essay as well as a preview single of the longer book, Geology of Media, out next year! best Jussi *The Anthrobscene, one of the first three works in the Forerunners: Ideas First series, now available * [image: The Anthrobscene] THE ANTHROBSCENE By Jussi Parikka University of Minnesota Press l 68 pages l November 2014 ISBN 978-1-4529-4400-5 | ebook | $4.95 ISBN 978-0-8166-9607-9 | paperback | $7.95 Forerunners: Ideas First Series Smartphones, laptops, tablets, and e-readers all at one time held the promise of a more environmentally healthy world not dependent on paper and deforestation. The result of our ubiquitous digital lives is, as we see in *The Anthrobscene*, actually quite the opposite: not ecological health but an environmental wasteland, where media never die. Jussi Parikka critiques corporate and human desires as a geophysical force, analyzing the material side of the earth as essential for the existence of media and introducing the notion of an alternative deep time in which media live on in the layer of toxic waste we will leave behind as our geological legacy. *The Anthrobscene* is one of the first three works released in the University of Minnesota Press's new Forerunners: Ideas First <http://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/series/forerunners-ideas-first> initiative, along with *Aesop's Anthropology*, by John Hartigan Jr., and *Mediators*, by Reinhold Martin. Forerunners is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital works. Written between fresh ideas and finished books, Forerunners draws on scholarly work initiated in notable blogs, social media, conference plenaries, journal articles, and the synergy of academic exchange. This is gray literature publishing: where intense thinking, change, and speculation take place in scholarship. *ABOUT THE AUTHOR:* *Jussi Parikka* is professor in technological culture and aesthetics at Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton.
