Fwd: off the network -- my (open access) book from minnesota press
by Michel Bauwens 17 Jun '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Ulises Mejias <ulises.mejias(a)oswego.edu> Date: Sat, Jun 15, 2013 at 2:27 AM Subject: off the network -- my (open access) book from minnesota press To: Ulises Mejias <ulises.mejias(a)oswego.edu> Friends and colleagues, As more information about the NSA global surveillance program is coming out, I imagine I am not the only one who feels our worst suspicions have been confirmed. But despite the outrage, I imagine I am also not the only one who feels unable to stop voluntarily contributing to the invasion of my own privacy. This is one of the paradoxes I examine in my new book, *Off the Network: Disrupting the Digital World*<http://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/off-the-network>, which is finally available from the University of Minnesota Press. In it, I propose that digital networks increase opportunities for social and civic participation at the same time that they create certain kinds of inequalities, and I explore the question of how we would go about "unthinking" the network, and to what end. You can pick up a paper copy from your favorite bookseller. Thanks both to Minnesota Press and SUNY Oswego, *the book is also available in an open access format,* so you can read <http://offthenetwork.pressbooks.com/> or download <http://www.upress.umn.edu/book-division/books/off-the-network>the whole manuscript right now -- for free! You can share the news by using the link offthenetwork.info (which redirects you to the publisher's page). Or you can send people to my personal website: ulisesmejias.com. Thank you. /Ulises >From the back cover: "This is an extraordinary book. The 'paranodal' critique made in *Off the Network* demands that we look at the social spaces that lie between, and are ignored by, network nodes; at the material basis on top of which supposedly immaterial networks rest; and at the vertical structures of political economic power that control the apparent horizontality of networks. In doing so, Ulises Ali Mejias delivers a devastating intellectual slam against conventional thinking about the Internet from both the left and the right." -- Nick Dyer-Witheford, coauthor of *Games of Empire * "*Off the Network* shows us that centralization of online services is not accidental. Take a look behind the social media noise and read how algorithms condition us. Ulises All Mejias carves out a postaffirmative theory of networks. No more debates about whether you are a dog or not; identity is over. Power returns to the center of Internet debates. *Off the Network* disrupts the illusion of seamless participation--it sides with the resisters and rejecters and teaches us to unthink the network logic. Its message: don't take the network paradigm for granted." -- Geert Lovink, author of *Networks Without a Cause * *Off the Network* is a fresh and authoritative examination of how the hidden logic of the Internet, social media, and the digital network is changing users' understanding of the world--and why that should worry us. Ulises Ali Mejias also suggests how we might begin to rethink the logic of the network and question its ascendancy. He argues that the digital network, touted as consensual, inclusive, and pleasurable, is also monopolizing and threatening in its capacity to determine, commodify, and commercialize so many aspects of our lives. Mejias shows how the network broadens participation yet also exacerbates disparity --and how it excludes more of society than it includes. The result is an uncompromising, sophisticated, and accessible critique of the digital world that increasingly dominates our lives. -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: A Fix for a Major Catastrophe
by Michel Bauwens 17 Jun '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: John Robb (Resilient Communities) <admin(a)resilientcommunities.com> Date: Sun, Jun 16, 2013 at 1:33 AM Subject: A Fix for a Major Catastrophe To: michelsub2004(a)gmail.com Having problems viewing this email? View this post on our website<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/5811/489c0db804d67f69/2503298/…> . [image: printlogo-1329425488189.jpeg] Wildfire. 2 Dead. 473 Homes Destroyed. It didn't have to happen. By John Robb The most destructive fire in Colorado’s history is still burning. It has already killed *two people* and burned down more than 473 homes<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9906/5b22572cab3c508e/2503298/…>, mostly in the suburban town of Black Forest, Colorado. That’s a shame. This fire *should* be a national embarrassment. There’s absolutely no reason that this event should have been this bad, with two people dead and nearly 500 expensive homes burnt to the ground. This wasn’t a poor community. The homeowners and the community had the resources to prevent this without outside financial support. [image: Black Forest]<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9908/b5ad29523eaf93df/2503298/…> This is simply a disaster due an inability to think resiliently, at every level. - Pernicious government regulations that outlaw basic rainwater harvesting and promote unsafe home and landscape design. - Corporations that spend billions marketing dysfunctional, but profitable, homes that turn us into dependent victims. - Individual homeowners, who were unwilling to take responsibility to make their property resilient to disaster (and thereby threatening the lives and property of everyone else in the community). As bad as this is, *it gets worse*. *************************Advertisement************************* Absolutely everything you need to know to grow fresh, healthy and organic food. Without all the problems and takes only 8 hours of effort per year. This method repels pests and controls weeds. Start your garden anywhere in the world<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9910/e9bb2f781b550d95/2503298/…> ***************************************************************** Even the people that *did* take responsibility and *took* action didn’t do the right thing. They simply didn’t know how. Take Nigel Thompson for example. He and his family live in the Black Forest community. After last year’s massive fire, Nigel decided to take action to protect his home. To prepare, Nigel cut down 20 trees near his home to create a firebreak. He also spent a small fortune on a new roof of fire retardant tiles. Unfortunately, but not unexpectedly, this didn’t work. His home burned to the ground. A simple resilient approach to preventing this type of disaster starts with the effective management of water. Colorado gets more than enough rainwater, even now, to support the development of a vibrant, living forest environment. The problem is that*97% of the rain that falls onto the ground in Colorado evaporates before it makes it to a major waterway*. The opportunity to use it is simply wasted. That error can be corrected. Simple measures (for details, see my report on Water Abundance<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9912/364b9972e841eaa6/2503298/…>), at both the home and community level can turn homes and their associated landscapes into powerful allies in the fight against wildfires. For example, changes to home and neighborhood landscapes (from swales to hugelkultur<https://cs962.infusionsoft.com/app/linkClick/9914/0a8c1dd41d701acc/2503298/…>) as well as proper cover crops could easily be added at scales that would have created community wide conditions (higher humidity, lower temperatures, and green plants) that are much less likely to support the spread of a wildfire. Active rainwater harvesting from the rooftop, if it was allowed, would have enabled even more positive changes to the system. There’s lots more. Unfortunately, none of this happened, antiquated thinking prevailed, and disaster ensued. A complete misunderstanding from the Central Bank lead to unjustified charges for "forgery" against these pro-poor programmes' activists : they need help in raising funds for the fees of the judicial proceedings and bring back to life the programme, called Bangla-Pesa, in a poor slum community in Mombasa. Here in the Yi-Tan calls we've talked about municipal broadband service as a Commons, with Chris Mitchell<http://yi-tan.com/Promise_and_Barriers_of_Community_Broadband> . Let's dive deeper into Commons with Cardozo law professor Brett Frischmann<http://yi-tan.com/Brett_Frischmann>, who has parallel research interests<http://www.brettfrischmann.com/Commons_Research>in infrastructure Commons and knowledge Commons. His work ranges from telecommunications to medical research and the Internet. With Brett, let's discuss: - How can we best understand Commons? How has this changed over time? - Are Commons assets or liabilities? - How true is the "Tragedy of the Commons"? - What can we do to improve our ability to nurture Commons? (I've taken to capitalizing the Commons out of respect, and to call it out in prose.) As always, an IRC chat <http://yi-tan.com/IRC_chat> will be available during the call at #yitan. Fwd: Energy Alternatives -- new reports from The Corner House
by Michel Bauwens 13 Jun '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: The Corner House - new postings <notification-l(a)thecornerhouse.org.uk> Date: Thu, Jun 13, 2013 at 9:25 PM Subject: Energy Alternatives -- new reports from The Corner House To: notification-l(a)thecornerhouse.org.uk 'Energy Alternatives: Surveying the Territory'. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/energy-alternatives 'The Museum of Fetishes' http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/museum-fetishes The main conflict in energy policy today is not between 'business as usual' and 'The Alternative', but among the many different proposed alternatives themselves. The difficulty is not just that these alternatives are so diverse; the questions they address and the problems they aim to tackle are also different, as are the criteria for answering them, the vocabularies in which they are expressed, and the politics with which they are associated. Figuring out what the assumptions and audiences of the various energy alternatives are is half the work of assessing where a democratic and survivable energy future might lie. If the many divergent conversations about 'energy alternatives' taking place today around the world are to be brought together, analytically or politically, their points of difference and conflict as well as their possible areas of synergy must be recognized and mapped. To support uncritically any and all initiatives that describe themselves as 'energy alternatives' would be to invite chaos and unending conflict -- and would make a liveable energy future impossible. A new 96-page report, 'Energy Alternatives: Surveying the Territory', from The Corner House and its partners, attempts to move discussions forward not by simplifying the debate but by clarifying how complex it is. It sketches four crucial differences among leading types of energy alternative proposals and initiatives: --They are organized around different questions and audiences. --They rely on different conceptions of energy's historical and social entanglements. --They follow different political theories and processes. --They have different understandings of the relationship between the local and the global. The report explores each of these divides before outlining how -- under these conditions of radical, contradictory diversity -- civil society might best encourage the democratic dialogue and alliance-building that constitutes the most important aspect of effective action toward a survivable energy future. http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/energy-alternatives NOTE: A limited number of paper copies of this report are available. Please contact The Corner House for more information. <enquiries AT thecornerhouse.org.uk> 'The Museum of Fetishes' http://www.thecornerhouse.org.uk/resource/museum-fetishes Depictions of the alternative energy technologies of the future suggest salvation is at hand -- but most of the politics and material realities associated with them are invariably missing. This article accompanying the report attempts to bring them into the picture, so that essential discussions about energy alternatives and futures do not degenerate into an irrelevant show of magic tricks. We hope you find these new postings useful and interesting and welcome any feedback. The decision represents a victory for cancer patients, researchers and geneticists who claimed that a single company's patent raised costs, restricted research and sometimes forced women to have breasts or ovaries removed without sufficient facts or second opinions. But the court held out a lifeline to Myriad Genetics, the company with an exclusive patent on the isolated form of genes that can foretell an increased genetic risk of cancer. The justices said it can patent a type of DNA that goes beyond extracting the genes from the body. The complex scientific case was perhaps the most important on the high court's calendar other than its more celebrated cases involving same-sex marriage, voting rights and affirmative action. And unlike those cases, which are expected to divide the court sharply along ideological lines, the controversial concept of gene patenting gave all nine justices something to agree on. The decision was based on past patent cases before the high court in which the justices ruled that forces of nature, as opposed to products of invention, are not patent-eligible. Since 1984, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has granted more than 40,000 patents tied to genetic material. Armed with those patents, Myriad has tested more than 1 million women since the late 1990s for mutations that often lead to breast and ovarian cancer. Most women who want testing must pay its price — $3,340 for the breast cancer analysis and $700 for an additional test that picks up a genetic link in about 10% of women who test negative the first time. Myriad officials say about 95% of its patients receive insurance coverage, often without co-payments, so that most patients pay only about $100. Myriad and a broad array of industry trade groups argued that without patent protection, research and development would dry up. Doctors, geneticists, women's health groups and cancer patients contended that competition would lower prices, improve outcomes and lead to more discoveries. The two sides had battled to a draw in lower courts: A federal district court in New York sided with the patent's challengers, while a divided court of appeals that handles patent cases ruled for the company. During oral argument in April, the court was presented with opposite interpretations of Myriad's contribution to genetic research. Christopher Hansen, the lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union representing the patent's challengers, said Myriad had invented "nothing." Myriad's attorney, Gregory Castanias, said the company created "a new molecule that had never been known to the world." The justices generally agreed that Myriad deserved credit for its process of isolating the gene and its use – but not for the gene itself. "In isolation, it has no value," Justice Sonia Sotomayor said. "It's just nature sitting there." But the compromise that emerged Thursday was evident during that 65-minute debate. Several of the more conservative justices said a complete denial of patent rights could jeopardize investments by other biotechnology companies — and that could limit progress on a range of research, from agriculture to the environment. --- Just because i'm near the punchbowl doesn't mean I'm also drinking from it. ------------------------------------------- Archives: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/247/=now RSS Feed: https://www.listbox.com/member/archive/rss/247/6508916-345ab7e1 Modify Your Subscription: https://www.listbox.com/member/?member_id=6508916&id_secret=6508916-49e8c799 Unsubscribe Now: https://www.listbox.com/unsubscribe/?member_id=6508916&id_secret=6508916-13… Powered by Listbox: http://www.listbox.com -- Web: www.lifesized.net Phone:+31 (0)6 5244 6445 Twitter: @lifesized -- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

-- P2P Foundation: http://p2pfoundation.net - http://blog.p2pfoundation.net <http://lists.ourproject.org/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/p2p-foundation>Updates: http://twitter.com/mbauwens; http://www.facebook.com/mbauwens #82 on the (En)Rich list: http://enrichlist.org/the-complete-list/

Fwd: Supporting Developments in the Co-intelligence Work
by Michel Bauwens 12 Jun '13

12 Jun '13

---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Tom Atlee <cii(a)igc.org> Date: Thu, Jun 13, 2013 at 2:34 AM Subject: Supporting Developments in the Co-intelligence Work To: undisclosed list <cii(a)igc.org> http://www.tomatleeblog.com/?p=175326563 Dear friends, As we ask for your support for our ongoing work, we want to share a few thoughts on the nature of that work. We are coming to see co-intelligence as the capacity of life and all of us to consciously participate in dynamic, evolving wholeness - in ourselves, in our groups and communities, in the life of our world, and in the wondrous ongoing story of our universe. There is real joy in such participation. There is also abundance, peace, justice, and sustainability... and deep meaning and wisdom. The Co-intelligence Institute seeks to help co-intelligent participation become an indelible part of our cultures, our political and economic systems, and the ways we all think, feel, and live our lives. Today's crises make it increasingly hard to live in the old ways. We are rapidly learning we can't be oblivious participants, acting as if we are separate from each other and the world, treating life as if it is there just to torment or serve us. The newly obvious consequences of those behaviors and attitudes have inspired a global wave of evolutionary engagement - what Swami Beyondananda calls "the Great Upwising" - creating new and better ways to participate consciously and vibrantly in and with life, together. That global wave includes the Co-Intelligence Institute as a thinktank, networking center, curator and promoter of new ideas, approaches, and stories. Wherever we find true peace, justice, sustainability, spirit, and community, we find the marks of co-intelligence, to learn from and teach with. The first half of 2013 saw us engaged in some intense work, including these activities: * We produced three landmark essays on participatory power, participatory leadership, and participatory wisdom - as well as a new account of co-inteligence - all of them chapters for an upcoming book on participatory sustainability. * We joined with the Institute for the Future to test a new approach to co-designing more life-enhancing forms of governance http://reconcon.govfutures.org/. * We shared inquiries and discoveries with numerous innovators, colleagues, and classes - and with you - in blogs, emails, phone calls, and face to face conversations. * We were inspired to re-vision our own ways of engaging with the world, a process still underway. Among our expectations for the second half of 2013 are these: * We will be developing and sharing coherent visions of the rapidly emerging, extremely exciting bottom-up economy http://co-intelligence.org/Economics.html . * We plan to spread co-intelligence ideas through Wikipedia, Amazon, leading blogs, and possibly short videos. * We intend to begin development of broadly useful co-intelligence pattern cards inspired by the GroupWorks deck http://groupworksdeck.org (which we helped create). * We aim to promote innovative citizen-government initiatives we have undertaken in two communities. * We will promote new understanding of the special role of random selection and systems thinking to awaken a wiser, more potent voice of We the People. Participate with us in this exciting work. Send us your thoughts. Help sustain us. Your support goes a very long way. Coheartedly, Tom +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ TO SUPPORT THE CO-INTELLIGENCE INSTITUTE & TOM ATLEE'S WORK... Please send a tax deductible donation of any amount -- $10, $25, $50, $100, $500 or more -- to The Co-Intelligence Institute PO Box 493 Eugene, OR 97440 or use your Visa or MasterCard - or Paypal - to make an online donation at http://co-intelligence.org/donations.html or tell some friends you know about our work, and invite them to support it. NSA enclosures
by Tom Walker 11 Jun '13

11 Jun '13

I wonder if the collection and storage of metadata by the NSA wouldn't constitute enclosure of the commons on a monstrously monumental scale? -- Cheers, Tom Walker (Sandwichman)
